This is the third and final message on Women In Church, the fourth and final message on Men And Women In Church (2:8-15) and the sixth and final message on chapter 2, which is the first section of the main part of this letter devoted to how to conduct ourselves as the Church of the living God:1 Timothy 3:14-15: I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you before long; 15 but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth. As I've emphasized the last two sermons, this is not a stand-alone message, in that it is inextricably connected to the entire chapter. Let's sneak up on our verse for today.1 - Command: A Woman Must Learn (11)2 - Prohibition: A Woman Is Not Allowed (12)3 - Because Of The Order Of Creation (13)4 - Because Of The Order Of The Fall (14)5 - Because Of The Design Of God (15)
We're following a rigorously specific outline for this passage in order to make sure we don't skip anything, and we see every detail of it.1 - Command: A Woman Must Learn (11, Review)2 - Prohibition: A Woman Is Not Allowed (12)3 - Because Of The Order Of Creation (13)4 - Because Of The Order Of The Fall (14)
For this passage we will use the Legacy Standard Bible, and as we work through I'll show you where and why I prefer that translation for this passage.1 Timothy 2:11-15 (LSB): A woman must learn in quietness, in all submission. 12 But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. 13 For it was Adam who was first formed, and then Eve. 14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into trespass. 15 But she will be saved through the bearing of children, if they continue in faith and love and sanctification with self-restraint.0 - Introduction: Why This Is Important1 - Command: A Woman Must Learn (11, Today)2 - Prohibition: A Woman Is Not Allowed (12)3 - Because Of The Order Of Creation (13)4 - Because Of The Order Of The Fall (14)5 - Because Of The Design Of God (15)
The second half of 1 Timothy 2 is a passage that is, in our time, considered controversial. Some unbelievers mock it, and believe it exposes the Bible as irrelevant and archaic. Worse yet, some professing believers twist its meaning, and will tell you that it doesn't mean what it says, or that it means the opposite of what it says. Before we dive in, I ask you to come to this passage in the same manner you should come to every passage of the Bible. Pay careful attention to the most important things.+ Who wrote this?+ Who was it written to?+ What is the context within this book?+ What do the words say?+ How would the author have understood it?+ How would the original readers have understood it?I chose to outline this passage rigorously according to its grammatical structure. In light of aberrant teachings Timothy was facing in Ephesus, the Apostle Paul reiterated God's will for the roles of men and women in the spiritual life of His people.1 - Therefore I Want Men . . . (8)2 - Likewise I Want Women . . . (9-10)

Thirty years ago, in both Evangelium Vitae and his Letter to Women, John Paul II issued a clear call for the genius of women to be “more fully expressed in the life of society as a whole, as well as in the life of the Church” (Letter to Women10). Throughout his papacy, in fact, JPII emphasized women's “prophetic character,” calling on them to be “witnesses” and “sentinels” — guardians of the sacred gift of life and the order of love (Mulieris Dignitatem 29; Homily at Lourdes2004).This vision for women, clarified and proclaimed in the late twentieth century especially, has yet to be fully realized. Catholics in contemporary America face distorted narratives about women from both poles of our divided culture. By revisiting and extending John Paul II's thought we come upon the opportunity to offer a positive countervision to, on the one hand, the growing anti-feminism in some Catholic circles and, on the other hand, the widely-held perception that the Church is anti-woman.The McGrath Institute for Church Life is hosting a conference that aims to help develop that positive countervision.“True Genius: The Mission of Women in Church and Culture” will take place March 26 to March 28, 2025, on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. It boasts a stellar roster of speakers, including Helen Alvare, Sr. Ann Astell, Erika Bachiochi, Angela Franks, Sarah Denny Lorio, Sr. Theresa Alethia Noble, Leah Libresco Sargeant, and my guest today, Abigail Favale. Abigail and I are colleagues in the McGrath Institute, and she is the conference convener and orgranizer.Registration for the “True Genius” conference is now open, and we have links to more conference information and registration available in our show notes. When Christians come together congregationally to worship, what are we to do? How are we to act? To answer that question, all we need do is look at the two groups of people that show up congregationally as the church: men and women. God has a specific design for each, and as long as we […]
Women In The Word 1 Timothy 2 is that chapter in the Bible where Paul says "...do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man...", which has caused many a church split and more recently the excommunication of Saddleback Church from the Southern Baptists. But what does the inspired Word of God say before that, after that (what is the context), and what is the historical context? Pastor Sean did his homework, and brings both barrels to the podcast. Agree? Disagree? Bottomline when it comes to the Word..."humility and grace." Also Airs Sun 7/16/23Support the show: https://reallife.org/give/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
When the Southern Baptist Convention met this week, a number of issues were on the docket. None, however, received the same notoriety as the decision to officially sever ties with Saddleback Church over their choice to name women as pastors. But while that final verdict has received most of the attention, the reasoning behind it points to a crucial lesson for applying God's word to our culture today. When the CRCNA permitted classes to seat women in ecclesiastical office it permitted churches to note their protest on their credentials. These have been read in a variety of classes and at Synod since them. They tend to be an irritation to some. There was an overture that wanted to have it stop but the Synodical advisory had another idea which went through surprisingly smoothly. Christian women are vitally important to God and the church. However, they are not always made to feel that way, sometimes through bigotry or misuse of the scripture. Evangelist Jonathan Edwards looks to the Bible to demonstrate the role of women in the Lord's church. Jonathan Edwards – Biblical Roles of Women in Church Life […]

Join host Lori Adams-Brown on A World of Difference as she sits down with Dr. Lynn Cohick, a New Testament professor and author of "A Second Edition Dictionary of Paul in His Letters." Brown discusses Cohick's journey as a professor, her love for scriptures, and her contribution to including more women's voices in the conversation around Paul and Paul's letters. Cohick shares her project of creating a visual museum online for free access showcasing ancient artwork and sculptures that represent what women were doing in the ancient church. They also discuss how women played a large role in the formation of Christian theology and liturgy. The discussion moves to the challenges women face in male-dominated industries such as biblical studies, theology, and academia and how they have to work twice as hard as men to be perceived at the same level. Cohick encourages women to take risks and not be afraid to fail. They then discuss the importance of acknowledging gender stereotypes and biases and the need to break free from them. The podcast ends with a sneak peek of a Patreon-exclusive interview where Cohick shares about her experience in times of suffering.
