Christian Parent, Crazy World

When we think of heroes, we might picture warriors or kings—but what about mothers? This episode dives into the lives of two extraordinary women who forever changed the course of Israel’s history: Deborah, a national leader, and Jael, a stay-at-home mom. Both women stepped boldly into their God-given roles and proved that no position is too small or too great for God to use. In this inspiring finale to our series on women in Scripture, Catherine is joined by Dr. Sandra Richter, renowned Bible scholar and creator of the video series The Epic of Eden: Deborah, Unlikely Heroes in the Book of Judges. Together, they shed light on the lives of these women and the profound lessons they offer for today’s believers. What You’ll Discover in This Episode: Deborah: A Mother in IsraelDiscover how Deborah shattered societal norms to lead her nation as a judge, prophet, and military strategist—all while embracing her identity as a "mother in Israel." Jael: The Unexpected HeroLearn how Jael, armed with nothing but household tools, courageously defeated Sisera, proving that faith and bravery can transform even the simplest actions into acts of divine deliverance. God’s Calling Transcends CultureExplore the patriarchal backdrop of ancient Israel and how God’s plans for Deborah and Jael defied the expectations of their time. A Message for TodayWhether leading in the public sphere or influencing from the heart of the home, Deborah and Jael show us that God uses mothers to accomplish His purposes. Their stories challenge and encourage us to step boldly into the roles God has called us to. Setting the Record StraightGain fresh insights into Barak’s character and how his partnership with Deborah highlights the value of faith-filled collaboration. Why This Matters:Deborah and Jael’s stories remind us that God doesn’t measure significance by status or title. From the highest leader in the land to a mother in her tent, God equips and calls women to vital roles in His Kingdom. Modern Application:Parents, take heart! These narratives inspire us to lead with courage in our homes and communities, trusting that God can use our actions—big or small—for His redemptive work. About the guest: Dr. Sandra Richter holds a PhD in Old Testament Studies from Harvard University and Master of Arts in Theology from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Have you ever wrestled with that nagging voice that whispers, “You’re not enough”? Maybe it tells you you’re not smart enough, pretty enough, or even spiritual enough. Or perhaps it sneaks into specific areas of your life—your relationships, your work, or even your faith—and leaves you feeling unworthy. In this episode of What’s God Got to Do With It?, we’re tackling the lies of unworthiness head-on and replacing them with the truth of God’s Word. Leanne explores what the Bible says about your worth, why it’s rooted in grace (not performance), and how to stop striving for approval and start resting in the freedom that comes from knowing who you are in Christ. We’ll dive into powerful scriptures like Ephesians 2:8-9, Psalm 139:14, and Romans 8:38-39, unpacking how they speak directly to our struggles with self-worth. You’ll hear personal stories from Leanne's own journey, along with insights from women she's walked alongside who’ve faced the same lies. If you’ve ever felt like you’re hustling for worthiness or doubting your value, this episode is for you. Is the Bible's View of Women Outdated or Revolutionary? (w/ Dr. Sandra Richter) - Ep. 133

Christian Parent, Crazy World

Are the Bible’s perspectives on women outdated and misogynistic, or are they, in fact, revolutionary? In this eye-opening episode, Catherine sits down with Dr. Sandra Richter, a renowned biblical scholar from Westmont College. With decades of research and a passion for making scripture accessible to all, Dr. Richter unpacks the ways the Bible challenges cultural norms and uplifts the status of women from its very first pages. Together, Catherine and Dr. Richter explore: Radical Equality in Genesis 1: How the creation narrative establishes men and women as equally created in the image of God, setting a profound precedent for dignity and value. Cultural Critique in Genesis 2: What does it mean for a man to leave his family and cleave to his wife? Dr. Richter reveals how this challenges patriarchal norms of ancient cultures. Normative Texts vs. Situational Ethics: Understanding the difference between universal spiritual principles and context-specific instructions is key to navigating scripture’s teachings on women. Women as Prophets: From Miriam in the Old Testament to Anna in the New Testament, women played vital and often underappreciated prophetic roles in biblical history. Addressing Cultural Context:The conversation also highlights the impact of Hellenistic and Jewish traditions on attitudes toward women in New Testament times: Rabbi Eliezer’s shocking statement: “If any man gives his daughter a knowledge of the Law, it is as though he taught her lechery.” The Jerusalem Talmud’s severe stance: “Let the words of Torah be burned up, but let them not be delivered to women.” Josephus’s commentary: Jewish law regarded women as “inferior to their husbands in all things.” The Berakhot’s daily prayer: Jewish men would thank God for not being born a gentile, a woman, or a slave—language reflective of broader Greek cultural influences. Dr. Richter provides essential historical and theological insights, helping us see how the Bible subverts cultural norms and offers a radical perspective on women’s worth and roles. Why This Matters for Parents:In a world where gender roles and equality are hotly debated, understanding the Bible’s revolutionary view of women can profoundly shape how we teach and guide our children. This episode equips parents with a scriptural foundation to affirm the dignity, value, and purpose of every family member—mothers, daughters, sons, and fathers alike. Don’t miss next week’s continuation with Dr. Richter, where we’ll explore the biblical celebration of motherhood and women’s contributions to faith and family. Compared to Who?

Today Heather digs into the topic of gluttony. So many of us have been taught in the church that gluttony equals overeating. We've felt shame, guilt, and stress as we've tried to not be "gluttonous" in the way we've related to food. And, in that desire and pursuit of not committing this sin, we've been co-opted by the myths and rules of diet culture. We've learned that going back for seconds or enjoying Thanksgiving dinner is gluttony. But, does the Bible really connect gluttony to food and our enjoyment of it? Does the Bible really say that gluttony is eating more calories than we need? Does God really watch every bite we eat waiting for us to cross the line into gluttony when we eat? You'll be surprised by all the helpful, Biblical truth in this episode as we dig in to what the Bible really says about gluttony. Main Takeaways from this Episode: The enemy has held us in guilt and shame and condemnation around Gluttony according to a standard that is not the Bible standard at all. If you're trying to do intuitive eating and it feels uncomfortable because your body keeps telling you you're hungry and you're eating more than you used to eat, that is not gluttony. Gluttony is about your heart, not about what's on your plate. Helpful resources: But What About Gluttony by Kevin DeYoung Philippians 3:17-19 Proverbs 23 Today's episode is sponsored by Classical Conversations. But whether you understand the book as a literal description of what will soon come to pass, interpret it as a metaphorical expression of hope for those suffering now, or only recognize its highlights from pop culture, what you think Revelation reveals…is almost certainly wrong. In Armageddon, acclaimed New Testament authority Bart D. Ehrman delves into the most misunderstood — and possibly the most dangerous — book of the Bible, exploring the horrifying social and political consequences of expecting an imminent apocalypse. Shermer and Ehrman discuss: Ehrman's religious journey • Who wrote the Bible and why? • how to read the Bible and the book of Revelation • Who wrote Revelation and why? • why Jesus spoke in parables • why worry about climate change if the world is going to end soon? • David Koresh and Waco • Reagan and end times politics • how Jesus became a capitalist and militarist • faith healers, televangelists, and other Christian con artists • Christian ethics and what Jesus really said about the poor and needy. Bart D. Ehrman is a leading authority on the New Testament and the history of early Christianity and a Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The author of six New York Times bestsellers, he has written or edited more than thirty books, including Misquoting Jesus, How Jesus Became God, The Triumph of Christianity, Did Jesus Exist?, God's Problem, The Lost Gospel of Judas Iscariot, and Heaven and Hell. Awareness of & Standing Against  “the schemes of the devil”2 Corinthians 2:11 - 11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.Ephesians 6:10-12 - 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.1 Corinthians 12:10 – “to another the ability to distinguish between spirits”“He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit.”“…the ability to tell the difference between gifts that come from the Spirit and those that do not”A Vision for FreedomLuke 6:17-18  - 17 When Jesus had come down from the hill with the apostles, he stood on a level place with a large number of his disciples. A large crowd of people was there from all over Judea and from Jerusalem and from the coastal cities of Tyre and Sidon; 18 they had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those who were troubled by evil spirits also came and were healed. ROCK OC = A PLACE FOR ALL TYPES OF HEALING!!Origin of Demonic Realm - SatanSatan's Fall – Who? When? What?Ezekiel 28:13-15 – 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God… 14 You were an anointed guardian cherub. I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God.  15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you. Isaiah 14:12-14 - “How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star/shining one/O Lucifer, son of Dawn!“...When he saw man made in the image of God, he [Satan] broke forth into jealous and malevolent envy. ...How great an evil it was, beloved brethren, that caused an angel to fall!” Cyprian (AD250)The devil was one of those angels who are placed over the spirit of the air. ...However, becoming envious of man, he was rendered an apostate from the divine law. Irenaeus (AD180)Origin of Demonic Realm - Fallen Angels & Demons•Fallen Angelic Beings – “Sons of God”/ “Watchers” / “elohim” - embodied•Nephilim - LXX –γίγαντες (gigantes) = Demons (disembodied spirits)Genesis 6:1-4 - When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. 3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” 4 The nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.Psalm 82:1, 6-7 – 1 God [elohim] has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods [elohim] He holds judgment…6 I said, “You are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you; 7 nevertheless, like men you shall die, and fall like any prince.”Origin and Schemes of the Demonic RealmThe angels transgressed this appointment and were captivated by love of women. And they begat children [the nephilim], who are those who are called demons.  Justin Martyr (AD 160)These angels, then, who have fallen from heaven, and haunt the air and the earth, and are no longer able to rise to heavenly things, and the souls of the giants [nephilim], who are the demons who wander about the world, perform similar actions.  Athenagoras (AD 175)Furthermore, we are instructed by our sacred books how from certain angels, who fell of their own free will, there sprang a more wicked demon brood, condemned of God along with the authors of their race. ...Their great business is the ruin of mankind. So, from the start, spiritual wickedness sought our destruction. Accordingly, they inflict upon our bodies diseases and other grievous calamities. And by violent assaults, they hurry the soul into sudden and extraordinary excesses. ...By an influence equally obscure, demons and angels breathe into the soul, and rouse up its corruptions with furious passions and vile excesses.  Tertullian (AD 197)“…the demons…No doubt, they are very kind, too, in regard to the healing of diseases! For, first of all, they make you ill. Then, to get a miracle out of it,...they withdraw their hurtful influence. Supposedly, then, they have wrought a cure!”  Tertullian (AD197)The angels transgressed this appointment and were captivated by love of women. And they begat…certain wicked demons (so to speak, of the race of Titans or giants [nephilim]) who have been guilty of impiety towards the true God and towards the angels in heaven. They have fallen from it, and they haunt the denser parts of bodies. They also frequent unclean places on the earth. Since they are without bodies of earthly material, they possess some power of foretelling future events. So, they engage in works of this kind, desiring to lead the human race away from the true God. They also secretly enter the bodies of the more predatory, savage, and wicked of animals and stir them up to do whatever they choose, whenever they choose. They can turn the fancies of these animals to make flights and movements of various kinds, in order to entrap men by such power of divination.  Origen (AD 248)Among angels, some are angels of God, and others are angels of the devil. But among demons, there is no such distinction. For they are all said to be wicked.  Origen (AD 248)From the seed [of the fallen angels and women], giants [nephilim] are said to have been born. By them, arts were made known in the earth. They taught the dyeing of wool and everything that is done. When they died, men erected images to them. Yet, because they were of an evil seed, the Almighty did not approve of their being brought back from death when they had died. For that reason, they wander and they now subvert many bodies. And it is these whom you [pagans] presently worship and pray to as gods.  Commodianus (AD 240)However, those who were born from [the relations of angels with women]—because they were neither angels nor men, but had a mixed nature—were not admitted into Hades [when they died]. Similarly, their fathers had not been admitted into heaven, either. Thus, there came to be two kinds of demons: one of heaven, the other of the earth. The latter are the wicked spirits, who are the authors of all the evils that are done. This same devil is their prince. ...However, grammarians say that the reason they are called demons...is because they are skilled and acquainted with matters. For the grammarians think they are gods. In truth, the demons are acquainted with some future events, but not with all. For He has not permitted them to know entirely the counsel of God. ...As I was saying, these contaminated and abandoned spirits wander over the whole earth. They console their own ruin by destroying others. Therefore, they fill every place with snares, deceits, frauds, and errors. For they cling to individuals and even occupy whole houses, from door to door. ...And since spirits are without physical substance and cannot be held, they slink into the bodies of men. Secretly working in their inward parts, they corrupt the health of these persons, bring on diseases, terrify their souls with dreams, and harass their minds with frenzies. They do this so that by these evils, they may cause men to come to them for aid.  Lactantius (AD 304-313)Summary of the Schemes of the Demonic RealmSeduction & secret knowledge (fallen angels)Haunt the air and the earth (both)Business = ruin of humanity (demons)Inflict bodily disease (demons) – ‘calamities'?Soul into sudden & extraordinary excesses (demons)Rouse corruptions, passions, vile excesses (both)Illness & then demonic healing (demons)Haunt denser parts of human bodies (demons)Hang around “unclean places” (demons)Disembodied (demons)“Some power” of foretelling future (demons)Lead humanity away from God/deception (demons)Possess animals, affect behavior to entrap us (demons)All wicked (demons)Arts revealed (demons? fallen angels)Source of idolatry & false religions (demons)Wander & subvert bodies (demons)Worshipped as false gods (demons)Authors of ALL evils (demons)Devil = their prince (both)Sow snares, deceits, frauds, and errors (demons)Nightmares (demons)Work secretly in our inward parts (demons)Harrass minds (demons)MODERN APPLICATIONSMental Health issues – anxiety, paranoiaAddictionsSexual perversions, abominationsChanneling – Sex Magick, spirit guidesReincarnationYoga (false religious ideas/practices)Fortune TellingNew Age ideasHoroscope (Astrology)SUMMARY OF DEMONIC SCHEMES - "THE WATCHERS"“…the same angels who rushed from heaven on the daughters of men. ... they laid bare the operations of metallurgy, divulged the natural properties of herbs, promulgated the powers of enchantments, and traced out every curiosity, even to the interpretation of the stars. The familiar mantra, “The Bible says it, I believe it, and that settles it”… should likely be rephrased to say: “The Bible says it, I'm confused by it, perhaps I'm missing something, and maybe the ANE cultural context can give us insights into the problem.” That's a little harder to remember, but I believe it's closer to the truth of the situation. My Top 5 Favorite Episodes of the Naked Bible Podcast#5 - Episode 434 - The Epistle of Jude Part 3 - 1 hour 3 min - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-naked-bible-podcast/id961385822?i=1000570230358#4 - Episode 103 - Moses and the Bronze Serpent - 1 hour 13 min - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-naked-bible-podcast/id961385822?i=1000430050351#3 - Episode 138 - What Day was Jesus Born? - 1 hour 40 min - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-naked-bible-podcast/id961385822?i=1000430050019This corresponds to Reversing Hermon - Chapter 4Blog: https://drmsh.com/september-11-happy-birthday-to-jesus/#2 - Episode 159 - Noah's Nakedness, The Sin of Ham, and the Curse of Canaan - 48 minutes - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-naked-bible-podcast/id961385822?i=1000430050248John Sietze Bergsma, H., Scott Walker. How Do We Help Our Kids to Understand Biblical Sexuality? - Episode 45

Your kids cannot go into a public restroom these days, turn on the television, go to school, or play high school or collegiate sports without being confronted with the question of sexuality. Who defines it? Our politicians, our celebrities, our educators, our feelings… or God? This is the most relevant cultural issue of our day. The question of sexuality goes to the very core of who we are as human beings. Are we made in our own image according to our own feelings, or are we made in God's image according to His design? In this first episode of a four-part series on sexuality, Catherine digs into what God has to say about our sexuality. We need to be having discussions with our kids about this topic because the world is. Our voice needs to be a trusted source of truth for our kids to navigate the dangerous secular landmine of their sexual identity. Joining Catherine for this vitally important discussion is Erin Barry, an author, speaker, counselor, and educational consultant. Erin has an M.A. in counseling and works professionally as both a counselor and consultant, and she is working on her doctorate in counseling where she is specializing in the field of sexuality. Erin and her husband Brett have founded the “The Home Educated Mind,” a Christ-centered community dedicated to providing materials and support for Christian parents. Hank Hanegraaff, president of the Christian Research Institute and host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, responds to a recent tweet and video by Benny Hinn. According to Hinn, the Lord spoke to him, saying he needs to talk to his audience about the great catching up. And that his teaching about the rapture is timely because this event is nearly upon us. Popularized by John Nelson Darby in the nineteenth century, the pre-tribulational rapture theory contends that God has two distinct people and two distinct plans for their two distinct destinies. The church will be raptured seven years prior to the second coming of Christ, and Jews will suffer tribulation. Beginning with Darby, rapture theorists held that, due to the murder of Messiah, Jews were in for a time of unprecedented suffering referred to as the “Great Tribulation.” Multiplied millions today hold firmly to this belief. But is it biblical? Holy Tradition, including Scripture, knows nothing of a rapture independent of the bodily appearing of Christ. **This is audio extracted from my YouTube video from September of 2021 converted here in podcast land for your listening pleasure.*I'm going to give you some core differences between the type of love we see expressed in society, the culture, and the world compared to the love that is taught in the Bible… and yes, there's a big difference. When I was in the New Age, I had a complete distortion of what I understood ‘love' to be, but at the time, I truly perceived ‘love' to be a deeper spiritual law. It was emotional, but it was more than that. I thought of it as a universal power, used to wield peace and harmony sheerly based on the power of my thoughts and feelings and how I treated others. In my mind, it was through the power of ‘love' that we'd bring a sort of awakening through humanity. So when I started learning about what the Bible *actually* taught about love as defined by God, it took a very long time of intentional study to ‘unlearn' what I was taught. Website:  https://www.melissadougherty.co/

Hank Unplugged: Essential Christian Conversations

Hank Hanegraaff, president of the Christian Research Institute and Host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, comments on Benny Hinn's misuse of Scripture in “7 Reasons for the Rapture.”[ https://www.bennyhinn.org/podcast/7-reasons-for-the-rapture/] Hinn cites Christ's words in John 14:3 as teaching a secret pretribulational rapture: “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also” (KJV). In Hinn's paradigm, the church is raptured into a safe place and then all hell breaks loose on earth—two-thirds of all Jewish people on earth die in an unfathomably brutal tribulation. Hinn also cites Paul's great and glorious passage on resurrection in 1 Thessalonians 4 as teaching a secret pretribulational rapture. In reality, these passages do not imply, let alone clearly teach, a pretribulational rapture. There just is no biblical basis for the notion that Jesus is coming secretly to rapture the church seven years prior to His second appearing. In fact, our Lord's own words negate the very notion: “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned” (John 5:28–29 NIV). This event does not happen at the time of an imagined secret rapture but at the time of Christ's second appearing. Some people are not raptured at one time and others at another time. No, all of humanity will rise in resurrection simultaneously. We ought not to be inventing theology in the 21st century (or 19th century when this whole notion originated)—reading our own odd predilections into the text. Rather, we ought to draw out of the biblical text only that which is in the text. We ought to interpret the Bible in the sense in which it was intended by the original authors (who wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit) and understood throughout church history. We ought not to innovate—we ought to perpetuate.
