Access Nourishment started as a school project and quickly evolved into a calling that could be something more. Dr. Shelby Gonser and Louise Shines connected on the project and while they both took slightly different angles to the impact nutrition can have, both of them benefit ATs and the patients they care for. In this episode, we hear the story of how Access Nourishment got started. Shelby and Louise share each of their passions around nutrition and how eating “healthy” as an AT isn't always easy and being able to provide good nutritional information to patients can be challenging. In the discussion they discuss what they have found so far and what resources they are hoping to put together to grow Access Nourishment to the benefit of everyone. Emerging settings in athletic training continue to evolve and in some cases they have ‘emerged' (listen to the episode). Cody Tesch is on the front end of one of those settings, fire services. Cody is one of a handful of full-time athletic trainers that are dedicated to the service and care of a city's fire fighter services and the steps Cody has made and where things are going are set to make an impact. In this episode we talk about what exactly Cody's role in this type of setting is. We get very deep into how it has taken some effort for Cody to establish himself as a resource for this group and had to fight some long-held beliefs. Cody has had to work to gain the trust of the fire fighters and show them that he is there to help, not hold them out. We also discuss how Cody is advocating for the profession to demonstrate the skills necessary to workman's compensation cases and beyond. On this episode, we interview Dan Fronczak, founder of Healthy Roster. Dan isn't an athletic trainer and his route to creating an electronic medical record system focused on athletic trainers is far from a traditional story. Dan shares his history and how he ultimately came to the idea of Healthy Roster and what building that foundation looked like. Dan highlights that from the beginning they worked with athletic trainers to make sure that the features they were looking to add and implement made sense for those in the profession and that has been a constant along the way. Dan goes further into what makes Healthy Roster unique. He discusses how everything they focus on now, and into the future, is tailored to making the athletic trainers' life as easy as possible when it comes to patient care. Dan also hints at a new announcement that if you follow them you know was the official launch of their CEU platform within Healthy Roster on 10/31/2024. It was great to hear from Dan and how he is impacting the profession while keeping the needs of ATs at the heart of it. Di'kademe/: a division or contrast between two things that are or are represented as being opposed or entirely different. Moving to one extreme or the other can be hard to balance, especially if you try and make two seemingly opposing views/perspectives try and mix together and champion both of them. This is where dichotomy comes from and the concept that you have to find balance. There are times to be aggressive but you have to be able to double back with caution because you can't run yourself in only one direction and then immediately make a switch. Recognizing and embracing the dichotomy of ideas is important to all professions but can have some serious implications in athletic training. It is important to recognize the wide range of differing ideas but also be able to balance those in order to be maximally effective. Jen Xu is a minimalist shoe enthusiast in addition to everything else she has going on. Jen is currently a PhD student at the University of Virginia, doing stand up comedy, taking care of a new puppy and writing on Medium. This discussion came up when Jen posted about the importance of the details and nuance that come with moving into minimalist shoes. This idea grew into the conversation we had about the importance of nuance in everything athletic training. In this episode we talk about many different aspects of athletic training and how nuance plays a role. We discuss because of how vast the profession is and how many different things can be effective but when it comes to making a huge difference it is in the nuance of care that is essential. We cover a lot of ground and of course, we talk about minimalist shoes and how Jen, the enthusiast she is, has seen how much nuance is important in getting people interested in the potential transition. A lot to take away from this conversation, enjoy. Karen Fennell is the outgoing NATA COPA chair and as much as we tried to schedule this episode before then, schedules didn't line up. In this episode, Karen dives deep into what COPA is and their charge as a committee. She discusses the inner workings of COPA and how the committee is set up. It was interesting to hear how surprisingly large the committee is. Karen also discusses how the committee has evolved over time and adapted to the changes in the athletic training profession. Karen also makes a great point on the importance of the wording around “emerging” and “non-foundational” settings and why she chooses to use “non-foundational”. I learned a ton in this episode and have a better understanding of COPA and the NATA. Check it out. Dr. Breitbach has done a lot in his career and worked in many different settings prior to moving into academics. From there he has been a program director and now works as a vice dean and professor and his research focuses on interprofessional education and collaborative practice. Dr. Breitbach has been deeply involved with this area of research and education through the courses he teaches at Saint Louis University. In this episode we discuss what interprofessional education and collaborative practice are and how they can be applied to athletic training and building a healthcare team. As we have seen in my instances, a team is what can make a difference and help provide the highest level of care to the patients they serve. Dr. Breitbach provides an abundance of insight into these topics and a lot of takeaways about the importance of them and how to implement them in your daily practice. Please enjoy.
