In this rib-tickling episode of Join the Docs, Professor Jonathan Sackier and Doctor Nigel Guest take listeners on a wild ride through the zany world of sports mishaps, where the unexpected meets the utterly ridiculous. As always, their sharp wit and infectious banter set the tone, making even the most jaw-dropping, or finger-ripping  injuries feel like punchlines in an elaborate comedy routine. How can athletes go from hero to zero in seconds? The show kicks off with a lineup of pre-game blunders and over-the-top celebrations that went hilariously wrong, proving that even the most serious athletes aren't immune to the occasional silly accident. From tripping over shoelaces during a grand entrance to attempting a victory dance that ends with a tumble, this episode is a reminder that in sports, things can go from perfect to perfectly disastrous in the blink of an eye.How does one mistake an iron for a phone? One of the standout tales in this episode involves a baseball player who somehow managed to do just that. Yes, you heard that right—a moment of distraction turned into a face-burning catastrophe that would go down in sports history as one of the most bizarre injuries imaginable. As painful as this, and others sound, it is baffling how people do such things t,  you'll find it hard not to laugh out loud!.How far is too far when celebrating? There's the unforgettable story of a soccer player who, in the heat of celebrating a goal, lost more than just his composure—he lost a finger! It's a tale so ridiculous, you'd think it was fiction, but the beauty of this episode is that all these mishaps are gloriously true. Sackier and Guest are baffled by the circumstances and you will be too.Why do these stories matter? As the episode progresses, The Docs take a step back from the silliness to reflect on the importance of safety in sports. While the stories may seem light-hearted, these mishaps serve as a reminder that sports, while thrilling, can also be fraught with unexpected dangers. From minor injuries to more serious accidents, the hosts highlight the need for precautions—albeit with a comedic twist. They point out that athletes, in their quest for glory, can sometimes overlook basic safety measures, leading to moments that are more farcical than triumphant. What's the lesson here? This episode reminds us that no matter how skilled or experienced you are, sports will always have the potential for unpredictable mishaps. And sometimes, those mishaps are exactly what we need to keep things in perspective.Whether you're an athlete with your own catalogue of embarrassing injuries, or simply someone who enjoys a good laugh at the expense of others (in the nicest possible way, of course), this episode is one you won't want to miss. Sackier and Guest bring their A-game, delivering both hilarity and insights in equal measure. So, tune in for a whirlwind of absurdity, and remember: always play it safe, or you might just end up as the next punchline.—--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show. Youth Sports Safety is Jim Mackies passion project. With over 50 years working as an AT, he can sit back and turn the profession over to the younger crowd, but instead, he continues to give time and effort to help improve healthcare for all athletes Mr. Mackie have you ever had to perform CPR? Had a coach drop dead on the goal line after a game. As I am headed that way I see the firetruck pulling out, and this was before we AEDs readily available. Jim, What is happening in Youth Sports Safety? Florida is # 1 in sport safety but much to be done. Laws re Concussion, CWI, AED, EAP, etc. but much education and compliance are needed.  There are a lot of causes or task forces, why did you choose Youth Sports Safety? Obviously, there was a big void legislatively & in the knowledge base. Allows me to put many years of experience back into the community to advocate and educate. Where is it headed? Progress is being made but we have to see more implementation of best practices done consistently.  With many schools without an AT there requires more district education, especially in our rural communities. What roadblocks are we seeing? Resistance and slow to change the culture, especially in youth leagues. Many are volunteer-driven and they rely on what their personal experience was and not best practices as well as the effort it takes to implement. We have discussed social media a lot recently, what role does it play in Youth Sports Safety? Podcasts can help to educate and influence the public. They see a lot of situations that happen and yet are dismissed or diminished in a 24-hour news cycle. Youth Sports Safety Podcast - tell me about that. Started in 2021 We have been opportunistic and gotten some really high-profile doctors and Athletic Trainers. Call to action: Take the time to educate kids, parents, and coaches on the best practices.  Raise the expectations of those you entrust your child to at their sports venue. Take the steps to create a venue-specific EAP, learn CPR, have AEDs accessible everywhere, and connect with an AT. Jim Mackie - jdmackie@comcast.net JAXSMP.com ATSJAX.com

Rob has four active, athletic girls. Four years ago his two youngest daughters wanted to join lacrosse. When Rob watched their first clinic, he was amazed that the girls were not wearing helmets in a sport played with a stick and a rock hard ball flying around. He looked at an adjacent field and saw a group of boys playing with helmets, shoulder pads, protective gloves, etc. He was angry. Again, girls were not being looked after in the same way. He decided to go home and buy his girls helmets but quickly found that there were no suitable alternatives. Instead of being frustrated with the situation, he set out on a mission to make the first ever ASTM approved girls lacrosse headgear and that's exactly what he did! Throughout his newly released book, "It’s A No- Brainer: An Entrepreneur’s Battle to Reduce Concussions in Girls’ Lacrosse", you will hear stories from girls who have suffered life-changing head injuries while playing lacrosse, most often from a single ball or stick to their unprotected heads. Rob also shares the science behind why all girls who play lacrosse need to be wearing head protection today!  Websites and Handles:www.robstolker.comwww.hummingbirdsports.comwww.brainsafetyalliance.comBook: It's a No-Brainer: An Entrepreneur's Battle to Reduce Concussions in Girls' LacrosseCORPORATE SPONSOR:efile4Biz makes it easy to file and deliver 1099 and W-2 forms online. About The National Center for Sports Safety (NCSS) Mission: The National Center for Sports Safety (NCSS) was founded to promote the importance of injury prevention and safety on all levels of the youth sports community through education and research. NCSS focuses on decreasing the number and/or severity of injuries through developing and teaching sports safety courses and collecting, analyzing and researching injury data. History: In 2001, the National Center for Sports Safety (NCSS), a nonprofit, was founded by renowned orthopedic surgeon Lawrence J. Lemak, M.D. NCSS was created to promote the importance of injury prevention and safety on all levels of youth sports through education and research. To raise national safety standards and discuss the growing concerns of youth sports, NCSS held a “Setting the Standard” Summit in Birmingham, Alabama (2002). The purpose was to “Raise the Standard” in youth sports through sports safety awareness. The summit was a success with more than 30 delegates from across the country coming together to collaborate their expertise to develop content for a sports safety course. Two years later, after intensive research and content development, NCSS launched a sports safety course called PREPARE. PREPARE educates coaches, volunteers, parents and anyone who is responsible for an athlete vital skills that could help save a child’s life on the playing field or court. The PREPARE course gives the sports community the confidence and knowledge to prevent and respond to injuries and emergency situations until a qualified medical professional arrives. PREPARE is also available as an online course. In 2007, NCSS achieved 501(c) (3) status after satisfying state and federal requirements. NCSS continues to partner with many national governing bodies, youth leagues and state high school athletic associations to educate coaches on the importance of sports safety. In 2010, NCSS produced a parent and athlete video to educate parents and athletes on preventative measures and ways to be proactive in youth sports safety. The 16-minute video covers five essential topics that parents and athletes need to be familiar with in the event of an emergency on the field or court. The video includes information regarding concussions, pre-participation physicals, cardiac and genetic disorders, heat illnesses and staph (Staphylococcus aureus)/ MRSA infections. The parent and athlete video has been reviewed and approved by the AHSAA medical advisory committee and can be viewed here. This same year, NCSS began focusing on event fundraisers to help build further support for NCSS so that additional tools and resources for coaches, parents and athletes could be built and provided to continue “Raising the Standard” in youth sports safety. Furthermore, NCSS continues to expand by educating coaches, parents and volunteers in basic safety techniques and emergency responses to ensure the playing fields and courts are safe for youth athletes across the nation. In June of 2016, NCSS was selected as a finalist for the Birmingham Business Journal Nonprofit Awards. NCSS was nominated in the $500k-$999k category alongside the following nonprofits: Magic Moments, Triumph Services, and the Birmingham Education Foundation
