In Episode #74, I have a discussion with recurring guest Dr. Julie Stamm, PhD. She is an expert in repetitive head impacts and the author of The Brain on Youth Sports: The science, The myths and The Future. Dr. Stamm begins with explaining what a  concussion is and how it occurs. She goes on to explain what a Guardian Cap is and how it's suppose to protect athletes. We discuss the possible change in terminology surrounding concussions and head impacts, and what that may mean moving forward. Dr. Stamm offers her opinion on the mandate and what that means for athletes in the future. She also offers her opinion on the efficacy of the Guardian Cap and if the mandate is just for "optics." Finally, Dr. Stamm offers her advice to parents and coaches when it comes to relying on the Guardian Cap for safety and preventing concussions. In the end, I offer my 'Three Takeaways.' As usual, Dr. Stamm is informative and insightful. If you have or coach an athlete, I suggest you listen to this and the previous episodes that Dr. Stamm was a guest on. As always, thanks for listening. Take Care.Support the Show.

From the NFL to youth soccer, sports teams have been forced to reckon with decades of research showing the risks of repeated blows to the head through contact sports. At the same time, participation in organized team sports has been found to be extremely beneficial for the developing brain. So how should parents square those facts and find a safe middle ground for their kids? In this episode, Sanjay speaks to Julie Stamm, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Kinesiology and author of the book “The Brain on Youth Sports.” She explains why even those who don't play sports should be aware of the risks and shares tips on how we all can keep our heads protected. To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy

Sexual dysfunction is any problem that prevents a person or couple from experiencing satisfaction from sexual activity. Some 43% of women and 31% of men report some degree of sexual dysfunction, according to the Cleveland Clinic. And if you add in an autoimmune condition like Multiple Sclerosis, that number can go as high as 69%.So to talk frankly about this important issue, particularly from the viewpoint of married women, I drafted in three of my favorite MSers - Roxanne Engstrom, Julie Stamm, and Amanda Thompson.  In the final part of this discussion, we cover talking with your partner about toys and lubrication, as well as dealing with incontinence. Dr. Stamm and I discussed this topic two years ago (Episode #19 dated 7/20/21). In this episode, we discussed the most recent science and information surrounding concussions. Dr. Stamm shared information on the most recent findings when it comes to CTE and what the NFL and other professional sports leagues are doing to curtail the incidents of concussions. Dr. Stamm also discussed the eventual use of A.I. in the field of diagnosing and possible treatment of concussions. We covered the efficacy, or lack thereof, of the widely used Guardian Caps and whether they are help or more harmful to athletes.  Finally, Dr. Stamm offers her advice to parents, coaches and athletes when it comes to dealing with concussions.https://www.amazon.com/Brain-Youth-Sports-Science-Future/dp/1538143194Thanks for listening. The science surrounding repeated head impacts in sports can be confusing and is often misinterpreted. The headlines don't tell the whole story, and more information is often needed to understand what the science really means. It can be challenging for the parent to make sense of all the conflicting information out there and make the best decision for their child. It can be equally as challenging for health care providers to know how to answer the question these parents have. Dr. Julie Stamm came on the podcast to share her research which she included in her book, The Brain on Youth Sports, the science, the myths and the future.

Julie Stamm is a faculty member in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her book, The Brain on Youth Sports: The Science, the Myths, and the Future, makes a major contribution to the broader field of concussion research. Dr. Stamm continues to conduct cutting-edge research and will make a major positive impact on the field with her scholarship and multi-dimensional perspective. In this SGG episode, we discussed: 1. Growing up a 3-sport athlete in Mosinee, Wisconsin. 2. The role and impact of sports in Mosinee. 3. Playing against Candace Parker at a Chicago basketball camp. 4. Her pathway to becoming a researcher and scientist…including being impacted by one young athlete's concussion. 5. How being an athlete shapes her approach to research. 6. Understanding what concussions are. 7. Peaks and plateaus in brain development intersecting with sports experiences: “There's a lot going on in that 8-12 (year old) range…And that's also a time when lots of kids are getting started in sports.” 8. The multiple forms of “repetitive impact.” 9. The implications of repetitive impacts…even those that don't result in concussion symptoms: “These hits aren't without consequence even though we don't see it right away.” 10. Myth: contact sports impacts aren't as bad in youth sports. The “bobblehead effect” and the number of impacts. 11. Hits per event are similar in youth and high school football. 12. Why she wrote the book. And why she wrote it in an accessible fashion. 13. Bad argument: Contact sports are safe enough. “Is safer than ever safe enough?” 14. The limits of helmets. “No helmet will prevent concussions.” 15. Myth: You have to hit/play the way the pros do in order to make it to college and/or the pros. (not true!) 16. “At the younger ages we should promote having fun in sports.” 17. Flaws in common “toughness arguments.” 18. How we can best communicate about and implement important research on concussion in youth sports. 19. The role of coaches in changing culture around safer contact sports. 20. Her ongoing research projects.

Anyone who knows me - or has listened to this podcast! - will know the importance I place on the mind-body connection. And I think that dance is a perfect way to develop this while also expressing yourself. But sadly many people with disabilities don't see dance as something for them. On today's podcast I'm talking to Sofia Blasco, co-founder and Executive Director of The Dancer Movement. This grassroots organization is dedicated to re-imagining the experience of dance for people with disabilities. The Dancer Movement utilizes the craft of dance to re-imagine the definitions of movement for every person. I'm also joined by my regular guest Julie Stamm, who is actually one of the reasons that this organization exists! We discuss why Sofia started The Dancer Movement just as COVID hit, how the classes have worked over Zoom, why the whole point of dance as an expression means that not everyone has to look the same, plans for the future, and the health and well-being benefits of dance.Links and resources:Visit The Dancer MovementConnect with The Dance Movement on Instagram and FacebookFollow Julie Stamm on InstagramYou can find Kathy Chester atdisruptfitnessgym@gmail.com moveitorloseit109@gmail.com Instagram - @msmoveitorloseit @disruptfitnessgymHere are some additional products that help Kathy deal with beating the Heat and Migraines.  Take advantage of the coupon code.Koldtec - Cool Head WrapKOLD10To save $10 off every item in store.2 items = $20 savings3 items = $30 savingshttps://www.koldtec.com/ Cold bean bag Releafpack. 15% discount use code Disrupt15https://www.releafpack.com

Like many parents, I find it so important for our children to have daily opportunities for physical activity. I am a lover of sports and recognize that there are so many benefits to exposing our children to sports at a young age. With that said, I can't ignore the damaging effects that some sports have on the developing brain. There has been a lot of information in the news about the impact of tackling in football on the brain, which is why I have brought Dr. Julie Stamm on the podcast to interview her about what her research has concluded. It is not my intention to create fear, but rather provide education in order for you to make informed decisions when it comes to your family. Dr. Julie Stamm is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She brings a unique perspective on the issue of repetitive brain trauma in youth sports as a scientist in the field, an anatomist with knowledge of childhood development, and an athletic trainer who has provided medical care for athletes.
