Author and journalist Michael Doyle's new book, Nightmare in the Pacific: The World War II Saga of Artie Shaw and His Navy Band (Univ. of North Texas Press, 2025) is an adventurous tale and a must read. Shaw, a leading big band leader into the early 1940s, joined the Navy a few months after Pearl Harbor. He formed a Navy big band of accomplished and to varying degrees roguish musicians and led them across the Pacific during the war, entertaining troops, finding trouble and dealing with grueling hardships. Michael W. Doyle's book Cold Peace: Avoiding the New Cold War (Liveright, 2023) offers an urgent examination of the world barreling toward a new Cold War. By 1990, the first Cold War was ending. The Berlin Wall had fallen and the Warsaw Pact was crumbling; following Russia's lead, cries for democracy were being embraced by a young Chinese populace. The post–Cold War years were a time of immense hope and possibility. They heralded an opportunity for creative cooperation among nations, an end to ideological strife, perhaps even the beginning of a stable international order of liberal peace. But the days of optimism are over. As renowned international relations expert Michael Doyle makes hauntingly clear, we now face the devastating specter of a new Cold War, this time orbiting the trilateral axes of Russia, the United States, and China, and exacerbated by new weapons of cyber warfare and more insidious forms of propaganda. Such a conflict at this phase in our global history would have catastrophic repercussions, Doyle argues, stymieing global collaboration efforts that are key to reversing climate change, preventing the next pandemic, and securing nuclear nonproliferation. The recent, devastating invasion of Ukraine is both an example and an augur of the costs that lay in wait. However, there is hope. Putin is not Stalin, Xi is not Mao, and no autocrat is a modern Hitler. There is also an unprecedented level of shared global interest in prosperity and protecting the planet from environmental disaster. While it is unlikely that the United States, Russia, and China will ever establish a “warm peace,” there are significant, reasonable compromises between nations that can lead to a détente. While the future remains very much in doubt, the elegant set of accords and non-subversion pacts Doyle proposes in this book may very well save the world. Andrew O. Pace is a historian of moral dilemmas of US foreign relations and an adjunct professor of history at Salt Lake Community College. He is a co-host of the Diplomatic History Channel on the New Books Network and is currently working on a book about the reversal in US foreign policy from victory at all costs in World War II to peace at any price in the Vietnam War. As business owners, we're often told that if we want to drive revenue, we need to develop a brand. But the reality is that we're not always making the kind of revenue that allows us the luxury to develop our brand - let alone have the time and ability to think big-picture-long-term-goals when we're trying to balance the daily obligations of entrepreneurship. It's a catch-22. That's why we were excited to sit down with today's guest. Michael Doyle is the CEO of Brand Iron, a results-oriented branding and marketing agency that focuses on the latest marketing technology. Using a unique combination of traditional branding and marketing (the “fluffy stuff”) with hard-cutting facts and results, Michael and his team have developed 500+ brands and raised over $5B in capital. Michael shares that creating a brand is more than just a cool logo or flashy website. It's the ability to identify and differentiate yourself and your company from everyone else. What are your goals and objectives? What is your end outcome? How do you define your value points? From that, you use it to create your marketing brand process and your social media or sales strategies, all while having the technology in place to track and analyze the effectiveness of all these different things to evaluate your ROI. It sounds like a lot, right? No wonder so many of us stick our heads in the sand. But this is where Michael and his Brand Iron team shine. With “BrandStorm” sessions, they help you create an action plan, define your messaging, and develop a marketing strategy so you can focus on both big-picture goals AND short-term goals for long-term growth. So whether you want to raise capital, develop your brand, launch a new product, or drive revenue, tune in to learn how Brand Iron can help you achieve your desired outcomes. Episode Highlights: What makes a brand memorable Why you should have a pitch deck - and what kind How to create a story that passes the bullshit detector His #1 piece of advice if you're just starting out How Brand Iron can help drive revenue Favorite Quote: The most successful entrepreneurs can do two things: They can take a look at the bigger picture goals and objectives and can balance that with short-term goals and objectives. You've got to be able to do both. On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Michael Doyle, a brand and capital raise Guru who founded Brand Iron 20 years ago. Michael combines his branding and market making experience with his investment reporting analyst strengths to shape a company dedicated to creating congruent brands supported by strong financial and investment stories. With this approach Michael helped companies he supported over the years raise over $5 billion of capital. KEY TAKEAWAYS Most people think of branding as how they present themselves and their company. I take branding beyond simply the message into something that produces tangible results. By integrating branding into all areas of business – Sales, Marketing, Operations, Finance… you can create a dynamic value proposition that comes alive, gets leads, and generates revenue. We work with companies to identify what's unique about their brand, how we successfully package and communicate that, and how we put together and take them to market to drive real results and help them achieve their outcomes, whether that's driving revenue, driving growth, expansion of a new product of service into the marketplace, or expanding into new geographies. The formula to raising $5 billion is really understanding your niche, how and why you're better, and how to package that into a really clear and concise message. That's the brand story. What most companies really have a difficult time with is telling a really sound financial story. When I start out with most companies they give me financials and spreadsheets, my job is to extract that information. The other side is communicating, highlighting and showcasing the team and their experience to effectively execute this plan and make investors feel comfortable that they know what they're doing and confident that they'll deliver and make this a reality. In order to make ‘x' revenue we have to get so many people to make buying decisions. To make those buying decisions we have to drive so much traffic and convert them from interested into buyers by clicking on an ad, a blog or a video. It's a mathematical formula. We need to understand what it's going to take, what our message needs to be, what are the most effective mediums, what's the timing? All these ingredients have to come together to deliver the results we want to deliver. BEST MOMENTS ‘You need to understand what your ‘holistic brand' is. It's not just logos and websites – which are important – you've got to have a good culture and have the team that's going to deliver, communicate, and convey the claims on your website and brand materials.''We don't want our companies to be vapourware. We want them to be real and do what it says they will do. By doing this, you can produce some great results.''Whether you're a startup, SMB, or a large enterprise, you should always start with the end in mind. What are the end goals you want to achieve?'‘Nothing ever works perfectly. The key is starting with assumptions and then adjusting and optimizing and fine-tuning it to where it's producing your desired outcome and results you're trying to achieve.'
