When former inmate Daniel Vansetten heard about the idea of a national newspaper, produced for prisoners and by prisoners, he jumped at the opportunity to be involved. National Indigenous Peoples Day is coming up on June 21, and it will be Jenny Brake's first NIPD as leader of the Qalipu Nation. She was named the first female chief this past December, and recently sat down with the CBC's Amanda Gear to talk about this year's celebrations as well as her first six months as chief.

It will be the first National Indigenous Peoples Day for Jenny Brake as leader of Qalipu First Nation. She was chosen as chief this past December, and is the band's first female chief. Drew won the 2023 HOKA Foot Locker National Meet in dominate fashion, winning by over six seconds in a time of 15:06.90. This comes after placing 8th at the meet the year prior. Drew has also had an incredible season winning his first XC State Title in the great state of Pennsylvania. He also ran 14:21 on the grass making him the 11th fastest ever at the distance. Drew currently holds PRs of 4:07 in the Mile, 8:48 in the 2-Mile, and is committed to run for The University of Notre Dame next year.  In today's episode, Drew goes through his National Championship performance, his season as a whole, the performance of his future Notre Dame Teammates, what this race does for the expectations for the rest of his career, where the trophy is going, and so much more! GM Melik Khachiyan is a top player and former chess Olympian. He is also a trainer who has taught many future GMs and has coached the US Women's national team for many years. Despite his many successes, Melik had never won a US Championship of his own…until this year. In 2023, Melik beat out many higher-rated U.S. legends to comfortably win the U.S. Senior Championship! In our conversation, Melik takes us behind the scenes of the games and opening preparation, and his training regimen during the weeks leading up to the tournament. Melik thinks that he was propelled to victory by a couple of decisions in particular: 1) a focus on physical fitness and 2) his staying active in competitive chess. Melik always has lots of chess knowledge to impart, but his recent successes highlight the importance of perseverance, both at and away from the board. And of course, as GM Levon Aronian's childhood coach, and a former student of World Champion Tigran Petrosian, Melik always has a few stories to share.
