The Sunday we'll dig deep into a famous Bible verse about God being the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and end, the one who was, and is, and is to come. As we do so, we'll wrestle with: (a) what it means to say that God exists outside of time, and (b) what it means to say that Jesus is the God of my past, the God of my present, and the God of my future. All this may sound theoretical, but it actually has profound real-life application.

Dr. Tracey Shors is a Distinguished Professor in Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience in the Department of Psychology and the Center for Collaborative Neuroscience at Rutgers University. She has ~150 scientific publications and has recently written a popular book Everyday Trauma. Her research program studies how our brains ruminate on trauma-related memories and how this process can interfere with our everyday lives, while making still more memories. Dr. Shors is also focused on identifying effective tools for reducing repetitive thoughts that reinforce our everyday traumas. Her brain fitness program, known as MAP Train My Brain combines “mental and physical” training with silent meditation and aerobic exercise to decrease trauma-related and repetitive thoughts, as well as symptoms of depression and anxiety.By understanding how and why our brain tends to ruminate, while training them with new mental and physical skills, we are better equipped to leave our pasts behind and live in a brighter future. In This EpisodeTracy's websiteMAP Train My BrainEveryday Trauma: Remapping the Brain's Response to Stress, Anxiety, and Painful Memories for a Better Life---What's new with The Trauma Therapist Project! The Trauma 5: gold nuggets from my 700+ interviewsThe Trauma Therapist Newsletter: a monthly resource of information and inspiration dedicated to trauma therapists. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5739761/advertisement

Who has hurt you most in life? And how is that affecting you? In your life right now, who do you struggle to forgive? Forgiveness sounds good, but is hard to do – really hard. This week we'll study a parable where Jesus shares insights that can help us get a lot better at forgiving others and liberating ourselves from the burden of bitterness.
This week's shooting in Nashville sparked painful memories for a Riverside County couple, we hear about how they've turned their pain into action. In other news, the U.S. Navy is struggling to provide child care to its sailors and their families. Plus, San Diego State University has founded a center for research into artificial intelligence.
A Prayer About Apology: When It's Hard To Say I Am Sorry. The art of a heartfelt apology. If you've been stuck mostly at home with one or more family members over the past year, chances are you've gotten on one another's nerves occasionally. When you're under a lot of stress, it's not uncommon say something unkind, or even to lash out in anger to someone you care about. And we all make thoughtless mistakes from time to time, like forgetting a promise or breaking something. Not sure if you should apologize?Even if you don't think what you said or did was so bad, or believe that the other person is actually in the wrong, it's still important to apologize when you've hurt or angered someone. “To preserve or re-establish connections with other people, you have to let go of concerns about right and wrong and try instead to understand the other person's experience,” says Dr. Ronald Siegel, assistant professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School. That ability is one of the cornerstones of emotional intelligence, which underlies healthy, productive relationships of all types. How to apologize genuinelyFor an apology to be effective, it has to be genuine. A successful apology validates that the other person felt offended, and acknowledges responsibility (you accept that your actions caused the other person pain). You want to convey that you truly feel sorry and care about the person who was hurt, and promise to make amends, including by taking steps to avoid similar mishaps going forward as in the examples below.According to the late psychiatrist Dr. Aaron Lazare, an apology expert and former chancellor and dean of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, a good apology has four elements:Acknowledge the offense. Take responsibility for the offense, whether it was a physical or psychological harm, and confirm that your behavior was not acceptable. Avoid using vague or evasive language, or wording an apology in a way that minimizes the offense or questions whether the victim was really hurt.Explain what happened. The challenge here is to explain how the offense occurred without excusing it. In fact, sometimes the best strategy is to say there is no excuse.Express remorse. If you regret the error or feel ashamed or humiliated, say so: this is all part of expressing sincere remorse.Offer to make amends. For example, if you have damaged someone's property, have it repaired or replace it. When the offense has hurt someone's feelings, acknowledge the pain and promise to try to be more sensitive in the future.Making a heartfelt apologyThe words you choose for your apology count. Here are some examples of good and bad apologies.EFFECTIVE WORDING“I'm sorry I lost my temper last night. I've been under a lot of pressure at work, but that's no excuse for my behavior. I love you and will try harder not to take my frustrations out on you.WHY IT WORKS:”Takes responsibility, explains but does not excuse why the mistake happened, expresses remorse and caring, and promises reparation.EFFECTIVE WORDING“I forgot. I apologize for this mistake. It shouldn't have happened. What can I do to avoid this problem in the future?WHY IT WORKS”Takes responsibility, describes the mistake, makes the person feel cared for, and begins a conversation about how to remedy the error.INEFFECTIVE WORDING“I apologize for whatever happened.WHY IT WONT WORK”Language is vague; offense isn't specified.INEFFECTIVE WORDING“Mistakes were made.WHY IT WONT WORK”Use of passive voice avoids taking responsibility.INEFFECTIVE WORDING“Okay, I apologize. I didn't know this was such a sensitive issue for you.WHY IT WONT WORK”Sounds grudging, thrusts the blame back on to the offended person (for “sensitivity”).(SOURCE: HARVARD UNIVERSITY)Please support the channel by purchasing the recommended readings below:HOW TO APOLOGIZE: Saying sorry is a powerful gesture, but it only works if you do it the right way. | This book teaches us the power of apologizing and how to make proper apology. Why Won't You Apologize?: Healing Big Betrayals and Everyday HurtsForgiving What You Can't Forget: Discover How to Move On, Make Peace with Painful Memories, and Create a Life That's Beautiful AgainAmazon Affiliate links Listed above receive Commissions.

In episode 61, I'm going to describe the personality traits that predispose to chronic illness. These include being a people-pleaser, caretaker, over-achiever, conflict-avoider, perfectionist, overly responsible, and other self-sacrificing and emotionally-repressive tendencies. I will talk about my own understanding of habitual emotional, mental and behavioral responses, which is essentially what personality traits are, as well as the work of others who have published on this topic, including Dr. Gabor Maté, Lydia Temoshok, PhD, Lawrence LeShan, Dr. John Sarno, and Garry Flint, PhD. In this episode I'll discuss: - The connections between early life trauma, the formation of the personality, and the impact on lifetime risk of chronic illness. - The characteristics of the Type C personality and how it predisposes to chronic illness, including cancer, autoimmune diseases and ALS. - How personality traits are formed, and the relationship between memory structures and habitual emotional coping styles. - Why people learn to be compulsively self-sacrificing. - The two primary human needs. - The stress response (fight/flight/freeze) and how repressive emotional styles degrade our health by promoting the sympathetic dominant state. - How emotional repression makes us more vulnerable to chronic infections, injuries and emotional stressors. - How MAP can be helpful in changing patterns of emotional, mental and behavioral responses. If you enjoyed this episode, don't miss episode 52: MAP for Painful Memories which explains how resolving trauma memories lays the foundation for healing. Does your spouse know your most painful memories?
Many of us are plagued with a memory of something we did in the past which we can't seem to get out of our minds. Even though we may have confessed it to the Lord and are confident He has forgiven us, the memory of that event still lingers and every so often rushes back into our thoughts to torment us. For some reason we have not been able to free ourselves from it. It still influences our thinking, our decision-making, or the way we view ourselves. If we've let others know that we are struggling in this way it's likely that we have received a lot of conflicting advice. And there is always someone who means well, who tells us to simply leave that event in the past and move on. He or she urges us to stop fixating on negative things and be happy, and that advice may have worked for them, but for those of us who have so betrayed our own standards that we can't forgive ourselves, even if we know that God does, that memory doesn't disappear no matter how hard we try to focus on the future and move on. Jesus' purpose in asking Peter these three questions, as they walked along the beach at the Sea of Galilee, was not to shame him for his failure. He wasn't bringing up his past to punish him. He was releasing him from the grip of a painful memory. Yet to heal Peter properly Jesus had to reopen that wound. Peter had done the very thing he had sworn he would never do, and it had broken something inside him. He wasn't the same man anymore, and couldn't move on in his calling until that was healed. By that time, he had already had a private meeting with Jesus and surely knew that he was forgiven, but the painful memory of those denials was going to continue to torment him until it was properly addressed. It would leave him vulnerable to the devil's accusations. When the time came for him to step out in ministry doubts would arise. Did he really love Jesus? Would his courage collapse again the next time he was confronted with danger? So, Jesus took Peter aside and walked down the beach with him, and one by one connected the memory of those three denials with a new memory of confessing his love for Jesus and hearing Jesus call him again into His service. Thankfully, John walked behind the two of them (v20), heard what was said, and realized the importance of what he heard. That he refused to close his gospel until he had reported this conversation indicates how significant John felt that conversation was. I'm sure he understood that many of us, like Peter, would need more than forgiveness if we were going to be free from our past and move forward in our calling. He knew we would need what Peter needed: a new memory and a fresh call.

Since the news hit most of us on Sunday morning, we've been thinking about the mass shooting in Colorado Springs. A gunman opened fire in an LGBTQ nightclub, killing at least 5 people and wounding several others, just 6 years after another shooting in another LGBTQ club in Orlando, Florida. These incidents have hit the queer community hard as many, especially Black and Brown LGBTQ folks, still struggle to find their place, even in liberal places like L.A. As we reflect on this moment, we bring back a portion of a conversation we had with sociology professor Anthony Ocampo, author of the book Brown and Gay in LA, and talk to Tre'vell Anderson, host of the podcast FANTI.

Can you remember what you had for lunch last Monday. I have absolutely no clue. Can you remember one of your early childhood friends doing something that hurt you? Perhaps my comparison is lopsided. The importance of our lunch is truly insignificant compared to the wounding of our heart. But the point I want to make is our memories of the past can still linger years and decades later. How much importance do we place on those memories? Have we learned to forgive? Have we learned to live beyond any pain? Memories can be wonderful and they can be painful. In today's episode I want to explore how to deal with painful memories. Give a listen.
This summer, just weeks after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the story of a 10-year-old girl in Ohio became a flashpoint in the national abortion debate. The girl had become pregnant as a result of rape and had to travel across state lines to Indiana to get an abortion. For one rape survivor, the case reminded her of what she lived through long ago, before Roe was the law the of the land. She spoke with NPR's Sarah McCammon about her experience. In participating regions, you'll also hear a local news segment to help you make sense of what's going on in your community.Email us at considerthis@npr.org.
Ian Irving hosts The Athletic's podcast dedicated to Manchester United with regular contributor Andy Mitten and club correspondent Laurie Whitwell. Any optimism from pre-season was dashed by defeat to Brighton, the visitors bringing back traumatic memories of recent years with their first ever win at Old Trafford. The Frenkie de Jong deadlock shows no sign of breaking and, as The Athletic's David Ornstein broke news of potential moves for Adrien Rabiot and Marko Arnautovic, it's fair to say anxious fans aren't reassured by either prospect. Again and again the Bible tells us to forgive. We tend to think forgiving is for the benefit of the offending person and find ourselves thinking, “Why should I let them off the hook? They're not even sorry.” Actually, forgiving is not about the offender. It's about our own quality of life and our impact on the world. This week we'll conclude our Life of Jacob sermon series by exploring an amazing story that illustrates the dramatic benefits of forgiving others.

Join me for episode 52 where I will talk about using the MAP Method of advanced neural retraining to resolve painful emotional memories. We'll hear about Nathan who was teased and humiliated for years at school, Patricia who was threatened at gunpoint, Ava who had experienced verbal and emotional abuse through childhood, and Mindy who felt rejected by her father and step-father. In this episode we discuss: - How unprocessed trauma is a significant, but unrecognized, source of stress. - How painful memories, especially from childhood, shape the personality. - How acute and ongoing traumas can be neutralized and greatly improve our ability to cope with a difficult situation. - How emotional abuse in childhood can create negative self-talk patterns. - How clearing painful memories around rejection can alleviate social anxiety. - Why unresolved trauma memories continue to affect us subconsciously and impact our ability to heal. - How treating intense emotional memories reduces the stress load, changes our response to stress and resolves the state of sympathetic dominance to accelerate healing. Don't miss episode 41 where my client Aaron describes his experiences around clearing painful emotional memories. We also break out our tinfoil hats and talk about a few conspiracies we can see happening if this technology is used for the wrong reasons.
