Welcome to the Identity Theft Resource Center's (ITRC's) Weekly Breach Breakdown for March 21, 2025. I'm Alex Achten, Senior Director of Communications & Media Relations of the ITRC. Thanks to Sentilink for supporting the ITRC and this podcast. Each week, we look at the most recent events and trends related to data security and privacy. Do we have any Taylor Swift fans that listen to the podcast? I am sure we do. If so, some of you probably attended the highly successful Eras Tour, jamming out to songs like “Miss Americana & The Heartbreak,” “Lover,” “Fearless,” and “Love Story.” You weren't the only one taking in the tunes. Apparently, so were the bad actors due to a well-executed Taylor Swift ticket scam. Follow on LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/idtheftcenter/ Follow on Twitter: twitter.com/IDTheftCenter

Over two thirds (70%) of Canadians experienced a cyber security incident in 2022. The strategies used by bad actors are getting more and more complex. Many of us are inundated with what feels like never-ending phishing emails, scam text messages and fraudulent phone calls. It's rare to talk to someone who hasn't experienced some form of a cyber attack. The situation is no different for Canadian businesses. Identity theft, scams, fraud, and ransomware are only some of the ways cyber attackers are targeting businesses today. One cyber security breach can cost a business thousands of dollars and valuable time resources to neutralize. We wanted to know: Is cyber crime on the rise in Canada? What is the relatively new phenomenon of cyber risk insurance? And in what way are consumers affected when a business experiences a security breach? The Canadian Survey of Cyber Security and Cyber Crime has published new data and, in this episode, we sat down with Howard Bilodeau, an economist at Statistics Canada to answer our questions about how cyber security is changing for businesses and what it means for the rest of us.

I can't think of a better topic for our 100th episode of Set For Sentencing – the topic that is so near and dear to my heart – MITIGATION FILMMAKING! Mitigation films are arguably the most powerful and persuasive weapon in our advocacy arsenal.  They offer an unparalleled way to humanize a client and show the truth of their journey, rather than simply telling it.  However, there's currently a significant gap in learning and leadership within the world of mitigation filmmaking. With no established standards and a lack of a supportive community, many well-intentioned individuals—whether new to the legal field or even the supervising lawyers—often lack the comprehensive skill set needed to produce these films effectively. This gap can be detrimental to both the client and the broader cause.  That's why a group of dedicated, highly experienced professionals is coming together to form REEL DEFENSE: A MITIGATION FILM COLLECTIVE! This non-profit entity is committed to educating, building community, and producing these essential films for those who might not have the resources to do so themselves.   Visit www.reeldefense.org and consider making a tax-deductible donation to support this worthy endeavor!   IN THIS EPISODE:   What is a mitigation film and why is it such a powerful persuasive tool of advocacy? Announcing a new, non-profit endeavor – the mitigation film collective! Examples of great results gained through use of video advocacy Why your judges will love these (even the ones that say they hate ‘em); Why the claim that these are just for “rich people” is a false narrative; How you can support the newly formed, non-profit mitigation film collective! Mitigation movies and the Simpsons!? Bad Actors in the Mitigation film arena Upcoming training opportunities with the collective   LINKS: To make a tax-deductible donation or learn more about the Collective, please visit:  www.reeldefense.org Sample sentencing videos:  If you've never seen one, here is a sample.  This was done for the first defendant to plead guilty and be sentenced in the plot to kidnap the Gov. of Michigan.  He received, by far,  the most favorable sentence of any of the individuals charged, and the video played a big part in that:  https://youtu.be/AOhOY3uuvRQ?si=7UO2LO1EPzDDF8SW New Book on Holistic Defense:  Early in the episode, I told you about Katie Carter's new book, Holistic Defense: a Practice.  It's a must read for anyone doing criminal defense work.  You can buy it here:  https://www.carterinvestigations.com/shop/product/   EXTRA:  The Saga of Lance Oppenheim:   One reason for the colletive is to guard against “bad actors” who either enter the space without the proper perspective to do the work, or who simply seek to exploit the medium for their own gain.  We talked specifically, in this context, about a filmmaker named Lance Oppenheim.  While we spared the audience much of the gory details, suffice it to say, Lance manipulated his way into the defense community and behaved badly in order to further his own ambition.  And, while we're here to uplift and inspire, sometimes people just need a reality check.  Back around 2014, Lance was a Harvard undergrad with big ambition.  He took advantage of legal professionals (myself included) that thought they were helping him with a school project, and then preyed on our vulnerable clients by using portions of their mitigation films without permission.   He neglected to mention that the little supposed “student film” he was making was actually going to be submitted to the New York Times for the world to see.  The story of Lance and his careless attitude about what we do and who we do it for, is a cautionary tale of why only those who are trustworthy and hold the mission of providing quality, holistic, representation sacred can be allowed into the inner circle of mitigation filmmakers.

Welcome to episode 2 of our special series of conversations between Z3 founder and podcast host Rabbi Amitai Fraiman and Palestinian writer and peace activist, Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib. In this episode, Ahmed reflects on his recent trip to Washington, DC, where he met with hostage families and U.S. officials and he shares the impact of those interactions on his vision for peace. He and Amitai discuss the internal politics of Gaza as Ahmed questions misleading polling data that suggests widespread support for Hamas in Gaza and highlights the cognitive dissonance caused by years of isolation and propaganda. Despite the violence, Ahmed emphasizes moments of humanity and kindness he has witnessed between Palestinians and Israelis, even in Gaza, which give him hope for the future. He shares his mission to be a unique bridge builder between the pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian communities, moderating difficult but valuable dialogues online. The episode also touches on the broader geopolitical implications of the conflict, particularly the role of Iran and regional power struggles, highlighting the importance of resolving the conflict for lasting peace in the Middle East. He writes extensively on Gaza's political and humanitarian affairs and has been an outspoken critic of Hamas and a promoter of coexistence and peace as the only path forward between Palestinians and Israelis. Alkhatib is a resident senior fellow with the Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative at the Atlantic Council's Middle East Programs. He has a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's in intelligence and national security studies. His writing has been published in US, and Israeli outlets and his opinions and comments have been featured in the international press.

We have quite a bit of follow-up today. Scott from Australia shared how self-service checkouts now display scam warnings when purchasing gift cards to prevent fraud. Jim highlighted a vulnerability in YubiKey encryption libraries that allows key cloning with an oscilloscope, while a former US Marshal reminded us that Zelle is marketed specifically for transfers between friends and family. Joe's story is on Loria Stern, a small bakery owner who fell victim to a counterfeit check scam after receiving a $7,500 payment for a large cupcake order that was later halved, resulting in her bank withdrawing the funds. Dave's story follows the scams targeting grieving individuals on Facebook, where cybercriminals use fake funeral live stream links or donation requests to steal money and credit card details. Our catch of the day comes from listener Anne, who shares a phishing email sent to a friend. The email emphasized the importance of thorough testing in the software development lifecycle and came with a suspicious PDF attachment, likely containing a malicious link. Anne hopes the campaign has zero success.
