Articles/news stories https://www.forbes.com/sites/tracybrower/2020/09/13/everyday-kindness-how-small-acts-have-big-impact/?sh=4fd88a045761 Kindness may seem like it's a lofty or achievable goal, especially in these post-pandemic times, but it's really an easily accessible state of being. Through small actions; Tuning in to self and those around you Practicing empathy Focus on small/seemingly mundane actions because those are truly the ones that make people's day and have incredible impact Practicing humility Embracing the good around you Leading others with kindness Create conditions for kindness, where you can; school, work, etc. This article is a small review of a recent study published in Psychological Bulletin that found that kindness positively contributes to all kinds of wellbeing. Instead of focusing on grand, sweeping gestures of kindness, the article calls out the small and seemingly mundane ways that we can embrace and cultivate kindness throughout our daily life. Focus on the everyday ways you can embrace kindness and share it with others. Don't overlook the “easy” ways to spread kindness either, sometimes those are the most meaningful. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/everyday-resilience/202303/the-remarkable-power-of-kindness-and-why-it-matters A simple review of three different psychological studies; discussing what kindness is, examples of what it can look like, benefits of kindness, and examples of ways to practice kindness. Being kind to yourself, first and foremost so you can show up for others kindly as well. Practice the “kindergarten basics”; manners, turn-taking, including others, comforting others Showing gratitude Listen to understand, not respond or problem-solve This is another Psychology Today post that offers a macro perspective of three published psychological studies Kindness isn't just beneficial for others, but it's beneficial for self as well Quotes “Kindness isn't rocket science—it's pretty straightforward. It can be hard to find though, when things seem so bad. It can also be hard to offer when we're under our own mountain of stress. But be reassured it's out there. Stay attuned to need and be empathetic, knowing small things can matter a lot. Be humble and embrace the good around you.” - Tracy Brower, PhD “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.” - Caroline Flack, UK TV personality, this was her final quote on social media before she took her own life “The biggest takeaway for me is, you have no idea what people are going through, so many people walk by you and they're just thinking of things or going through things, that if you look at them, they're smiling, or you won't even think twice because you're already thinking about yourself. So being kind and, like, the smallest gestures to strangers can really make or break someone's day or week or even life” - Zachery Dereniowski, Tiktok star and creator of the @mdmotivator page. Statistics https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00224545.2018.1469461 People who performed kindness activities for seven days experienced greater happiness. This was true regardless of social tie, it could be a friend, family member, stranger, or themselves.   https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022103117303451?via%3Dihub  Performing acts of kindness and helping others improves the happiness of the helper. Laura Whitmore is a broadcaster and writer. Born in Bray in Ireland, she started out in live TV after winning an MTV competition in 2008 and moved to London in her early 20s where she remembers being suddenly sent to LA to interview Coldplay. She told me how she thrives on being flung into the deep end and loves multitasking, which comes in handy when you are presenting live TV. In 2022 she appeared on the West End stage in 2:22 A Ghost Story. Her most recent TV project is a documentary series for ITVX called Laura Whitemore Investigates, in which she looks at subjects of rough sex, women haters and cyber stalking. As she said, she doesn't like to be typecast.Laura is married to comedian Iain Stirling and they have a little girl who was born in 2021. Laura's mum and Iain were instrumental in her being able to go back to work during covid while her baby was still little. Laura is particularly private about her family life which she suspects is influenced by the treatment of her friend Caroline Flack, who she witnessed being so open with the press. Laura told me it will take her years to process taking over presenting Love Island from Caroline following her death.I felt very honoured to be asked into Laura's home to sit and drink tea, and to meet Mick the dog, who you may hear snuffling around now and again during our chat.Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones Hosted on Acast. Dawn O'Porter is the writer and broadcaster with the sharp bob, vintage clothes and brilliantly witty turn of phrase. We've met lots of times over the years and she's always the best company. She's married to comedian Chris O' Dowd who she met in LA, fifteen years ago. Since then they've shuttled between America and the UK, bringing up their two boys Art and Valentine. She told me how having babies has made her more productive - getting more writing done and having more ideas. And so it seems... Dawn has multiple projects underway: her new book Cat Lady has just been published; she has a new clothes collection out with @joanieclothing, and when we spoke, she'd recently helped put on Flackstock festival in memory of her great friend Caroline Flack who took her own life in 2020. Because her sons were so little at the time that Caroline died, just before the pandemic, Dawn explained she cried in cupboards for months so they wouldn't see her upset. She also talked about losing her mum, aged seven, and how that hit her recently when her own little boy turned seven.Dawn and I had a brilliant conversation where we moaned about some stuff, laughed about others and both concluded it's good to acknowledge all the good things in life.. and it's good to wear fabulous secondhand clothes no matter what you're up to - even if it's just the school run. This episode came about it in that wonderful world of the women's network, where a previous guest very kindly connected me to the lovely, gorgeous and grounded celebrity hairstylist Lou Teasdale. Lou's episode I have to say was one of my favourites to record. It was quite a different setup to what I normally do - I was conscious of her time, so usually where I'd try and have a quick call just to get to know my guest before recording, I took a risk and went straight into a full on interview, and wow she really didn't disappoint. Lou's epic career as a celebrity hairstylist, notably for One Direction, created some interesting reactions - my inbox flooding with @harrystylesfuturewife and @forharryonly accounts the minute I announced Lou as a guest really showed me the power of celebrity - but Lou unpicks and reveals what it's like to live in that world brilliantly. We cover her fascinating birth story and journey back to work - albeit three weeks after having her baby girl, and the identity crises she observes in her friends who've taken longer chunks of time off and the effects on their mental health and personal lives. She was very open and direct about the need to work for our mental health as mums and we explore this in more detail. Lou is hugely successful - the country is not short of hairstylists yet she has 4.2 million followers and growing - yet one of her comments really stuck out to me when I asked her about what success meant to her - which is “well, does anyone every really feel like they've completed the game?”. Lou clearly has more up her sleeve. We also discuss the complexities of co-parenting, the challenge of how and when to let your kids grow up, the simplicity of raising a baby on a tourbus, and very briefly at the end, as Lou was great friends with Caroline Flack, the very much loved British tv host, we discuss the importance of selflessness and compassion when it comes to supporting those around you suffering from depression. I really, really enjoyed this conversation and slightly fell in love with Lou. I hope you do too, and as always, enjoy the episode.

Today's topic is a big one for us. It's one we've wanted to do since we started the podcast but one we have been nervous about doing as well. Suicide is one of those topics that's really hard to talk about for a lot of people. Yet we are seeing it more and more.  Over the last few years we've been hit with a wave of suicides from celebrities. People such as Robin Williams in 2014, Chester Bennington from Linkin Park in 2017, Anthony Bordain in 2018 and most recently, TV presenter Caroline Flack from the UK in February this year. Each one has taken us by surprise, each one with new lessons and new calls to talk openly about our emotions in order to prevent suicide.  So what do you need to know? What can we do if we're feeling this way, or if we know someone else who might be feeling this way? That's what we're talking about today.
