South Africa cheered on the Alexforbes Angel Wings crew ever since they set sail in the gruelling Cape2Rio Yacht Race… and now skipper Sibusiso “Sibu” Sizatu is sharing the incredible story behind the historic victory on this week's “Good Things with Brent Lindeque”. The team captured hearts across the country after overcoming a major setback in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, when their boom snapped during the crossing. Instead of giving up, the young South African crew adapted, stayed calm and continued racing thousands of kilometres without one of the yacht's most important parts. And somehow… they still won the Cape2Rio on handicap. The crew, made up of young sailors from communities including Masiphumelele, Khayelitsha, Grassy Park and Athlone, has become a symbol of courage, teamwork and what's possible when talent meets opportunity. Speaking on the podcast, Sibu shares what really happened out there on the ocean, the pressure of leading the race, and why this victory means so much more than sailing. You can catch the full conversation now on “Good Things with Brent Lindeque”.

AI Diagnostics, a Cape Town-based med-tech company that has built an AI-powered stethoscope designed to detect tuberculosis, recently raised R85-million in a pre-series-A funding round. In this episode of the TechCentral Show (TCS), Nkosinathi Ndlovu speaks to the company's CEO, Braden van Breda, about the funding round and its mission to transform TB screening across Africa and Asia. The round, led by the Steele Foundation for Hope, will fund the deployment of the Ostium – an AI-powered digital stethoscope that works in tandem with the company's proprietary AI.TB model. The device is designed to detect signals associated with tuberculosis in lung sounds in real time, putting point-of-care diagnostic capabilities into the hands of the nurses, pharmacists and community health workers who often serve as the first contact in resource-constrained health systems. In a wide-ranging conversation, Van Breda explains why AI Diagnostics chose to tackle one of the world's most underfunded diseases, and how an AI model can pick up TB signals that escape even trained clinicians. He also unpacks the painstaking work of building a TB-positive lung-sound dataset from scratch. Van Breda also delves into: • What the Ostium compares to a traditional stethoscope; • How the company handles real-world recording conditions, from noisy clinics to paediatric patients and HIV co-infection; • How AI Diagnostics stops the model from silently degrading as the device moves from a Khayelitsha clinic to rural Zambia or Vietnam; • The company's goal of securing World Health Organisation certification and the path towards that; • How the Ostium is positioned against – or alongside – AI-assisted chest X-ray tools such as CAD4TB and Qure.ai's qXR; and • What it would realistically take to put an Ostium in every primary healthcare clinic on the continent by 2030. Don't miss the discussion! TechCentral

In this episode, Tristan and Rashid take us to Khayelitsha, one of South Africa's largest townships, about 20 miles southeast of central Cape Town. Built during apartheid-era forced removals, Khayelitsha continues to bear the scars of spatial inequality. But in the heart of its informal settlements, two young founders, Bongeka and Aphiwe (Qhama), have created something remarkable: Thembisa Ratanga, a community space they describe as “a safe space in a not-so-safe place.”Through a clip from the original Liminal Space episode, we hear Bongeka and Aphiwe reflect on the deep connection between nature, spirituality, and the body. Yoga poses that imitate trees and birds. Sunsets you don't plan but can't avoid. The quiet gift of a wetland on the edge of a township. Tristan and Rashid then unpack what it means to “just be” in a world that demands we constantly produce or consume, and ask whether rest itself might be a revolutionary act.THEMESComing home to our bodies. Being vs doing. Nature as teacher. Rest as resistance. Spatial apartheid and its legacy. Yoga in the township. What happens when imagination meets reality? In this pilot episode, we kick off a special miniseries in collaboration with The Liminal Space Podcast, bringing voices from Cape Town, South Africa to the Common Good conversation. Hosts Tristan Pringle and Rashid Adams introduce themselves, share what drew them to the idea of liminality, and explore the stories that ground them right now, from earth as a shared garden to the liberating power of intuition. The episode closes with a collectively written poem on imagination, storytelling, and the search for glimpses of a better world.ABOUT THE SERIESOver seven episodes, this miniseries brings a Global South perspective to the Common Good Podcast's core themes: the significance of place, eliminating economic isolation, and the structure of belonging. Now in her third career, Doni Belau founded the women-only tour company called Girls' Guide to the World in 2009. What started off as a love for France and showing others how magical it was led into providing what is now a very curated, intentional world-wide travel experience for solo women to experience the world together in small groups. There is a huge range of options that includes sixty tours in 40 countries where the focus is anything but just checking off the top 10 tourist places. It ranges from seeing how life is for women in other countries, to attending women's sporting events, to going on safari in a lesser-known region of Africa. Doni has more than 15 years of experience in the travel industry. Before that, she had a long career in television production, stayed at home when her kids were young, and then worked in the not-for-profit arena and politics. (She started a not-for-profit in South Africa helping kids with HIV in the Cape Town township of Khayelitsha. Wow!)When not leading trips, she divides her time between France, New Orleans, and a sailboat named Relish – a testament to her adventurous spirit. Laboring Under Pressure Episode 4: Obstetric Emergency in South Africa with Dr. Meghan Hurley Contributors: Meghan Hurley MD, Travis Barlock MD, Jeffrey Olson MS3 Show Pearls Map of South Africa Referenced South Africa Geography Lesson There is a big disparity between Cape Town and its neighbor Khayelitsha. Cape Town is the legislative capital and economic hub of South Africa, known for its infrastructure, tourist attractions, and developed urban areas. Khayelitsha Township is a large informal settlement on the outskirts of Cape Town, with limited infrastructure and services compared to the city center. Many residents live in informal housing. This disparity is the lasting effect of how land was divided up and populations were moved around during Apartheid. Apartheid was a policy of segregation that lasted from 1948 to 1994. How does medical education work in South Africa? Medical education in South Africa typically follows a 6-year undergraduate program directly after high school Registrars our the equivalent of Resident in America. They are graduated doctors who work in hospitals under the supervision of senior doctors as they progress toward becoming specialists. Pearls from the case and the discussion afterward Whole blood from a draw can be used instead of urine on a POC pregnancy test. Wait a little bit longer before making a determination because blood is more viscous. Although the casettes are not approved for whole blood several studies have shown this to be efficacious. Free fluid in the abdomen and a pregnancy of unknown location is a rupture ectopic until proven otherwise. Appendicitis can present on the left side. Most commonly from an extra appendix, but can also result from situs inversus or mid-gut malrotation. This presentation can also be the result of an atypically large appendix. Fever is common in appendicitis (~40%) and becomes less common with older patients. Don't be falsely reassured by a normal hemoglobin in acute bleeding because patients bleed whole blood and the hemoglobin concentration is not affected. These patients should be resuscitated with whole blood. Give rhesus factor negative blood to female patients of childbearing age to prevent them from developing antibodies to the rhesus factor which can lead to Rh disease in future pregnancies. Rhogam can be given in cases of ruptured ectopic pregnancies to lower the risk of alloimmunization. Blood transfusions carry the risk of lung and heart injury from the extra volume. The treatment for this condition is to diurese the patient. Other topics discussed include the complications of working in a South African township hospital at night, the epidemiology of burns, and the importance of global health.
