Breakfast het in gesprek met Newzroom Afrika die ANC gekritiseer omdat hy staatmaak op geskiedkundige gebeure om sy invloed te behou. The ANC must either renew itself or face the risk of perishing. These are the words of ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa who delivered the party's January 8 Statement at the Nelson Mandela Park in Khayelitsha in Cape Town on Saturday (11 January). The ANC's annual January 8 Statement comes at a time where the party has lost its electoral majority for the first time in thirty years. However, Ramaphosa believes that the ANC can claw its way back through renewal and unity. SABC reporter Sibahle Motha has more details and for a critical look at the ANC's January 8th statement Elvis Preslin spoke to Angelo Fick, Research Director at Auwal Socio-Economic Research Institute and Prof. Bheki Mngomezulu, Director of the Centre for the Advancement of Non-Racialism and Democracy at Nelson Mandela University

With the African National Congress (ANC) turning 113 today, United Independent Movement (UIM) President Neil De Beer - who spent 34 years in the party - takes BizNews readers through the fall of the oldest liberation movement in the world: He says Vice President Paul Mashatile being chased out of house in Khayelitsha this week is symbolic of how “broken” the party is. De Beer lists the times major cracks appeared in the party: from the incarceration of two ANC stalwarts, United Democratic Movement (UDM) leader Alan Boesak and MK Commander Tony Yengeni, for fraud; the contestation of the leadership of former president Thabo Mbeki; the Zuma cabal's “slaughter” of the ANC's principles; the collapse of the Youth League following the departure of Julius Malema; the “fiscal abuse” brought about by the formation of factions; and the party's failure to transition form a liberation movement into a successful government. The ANC of today, says De Beer, “is ripped apart, it's destroyed, it's sunk, it has rust, it has enemies, it is internally and externally being slaughtered piece by piece. And that's where we are with this carcass. What they're to celebrate..., God only knows.” Sign up for your early morning brew of the BizNews Insider to keep you up to speed with the content that matters. Laboring Under Pressure Episode 4: Obstetric Emergency in South Africa with Dr. Meghan Hurley Contributors: Meghan Hurley MD, Travis Barlock MD, Jeffrey Olson MS3 Show Pearls Map of South Africa Referenced South Africa Geography Lesson There is a big disparity between Cape Town and its neighbor Khayelitsha. Cape Town is the legislative capital and economic hub of South Africa, known for its infrastructure, tourist attractions, and developed urban areas. Khayelitsha Township is a large informal settlement on the outskirts of Cape Town, with limited infrastructure and services compared to the city center. Many residents live in informal housing. This disparity is the lasting effect of how land was divided up and populations were moved around during Apartheid. Apartheid was a policy of segregation that lasted from 1948 to 1994. How does medical education work in South Africa? Medical education in South Africa typically follows a 6-year undergraduate program directly after high school Registrars our the equivalent of Resident in America. They are graduated doctors who work in hospitals under the supervision of senior doctors as they progress toward becoming specialists. Pearls from the case and the discussion afterward Whole blood from a draw can be used instead of urine on a POC pregnancy test. Wait a little bit longer before making a determination because blood is more viscous. Although the casettes are not approved for whole blood several studies have shown this to be efficacious. Free fluid in the abdomen and a pregnancy of unknown location is a rupture ectopic until proven otherwise. Appendicitis can present on the left side. Most commonly from an extra appendix, but can also result from situs inversus or mid-gut malrotation. This presentation can also be the result of an atypically large appendix. Fever is common in appendicitis (~40%) and becomes less common with older patients. Don't be falsely reassured by a normal hemoglobin in acute bleeding because patients bleed whole blood and the hemoglobin concentration is not affected. These patients should be resuscitated with whole blood. Give rhesus factor negative blood to female patients of childbearing age to prevent them from developing antibodies to the rhesus factor which can lead to Rh disease in future pregnancies. Rhogam can be given in cases of ruptured ectopic pregnancies to lower the risk of alloimmunization. Blood transfusions carry the risk of lung and heart injury from the extra volume. The treatment for this condition is to diurese the patient. Other topics discussed include the complications of working in a South African township hospital at night, the epidemiology of burns, and the importance of global health. Lindile Ndzaba is a young man I admire tremendously. He has built a wine brand with nothing but an idea and his drive to do something extraordinary in his community. Khayelitsha's Finest Wines started as a project to bring decent wine to his neighbours 'elokshini', in the sprawling township of Khayelitsha outside Cape Town. Working in the city, exposed to fine wines in his role as a front-of-house staff member, he was frustrated by the shoddy wines on offer in the taverns and eateries around his home. Working in his spare time he learned about wine and started seeking out unique and interesting wines he could bottle under the KFW label. It's been a long and hard journey, juggling his dream with a full time hospitality position in Cape Town, but it really took off when he was able to resign and focus full time on KFW in 2021. He's just returned from a trip to the USA where he was promoting KFW and I managed to sit him down for a chat about the road he's walked.Khayelitsha's Finest WinesThumbnail portrait by Brandon de Kock On Instagram @a_table_inthecorner Cover image sketched by Courtney Cara Lawson All profile portraits by Russel Wasserfall unless otherwise credited

Three decades after the momentous transition from Apartheid to a democratic South Africa, Fergal Keane returns to see what happened to the hopes and promises of a better nation. In a famous speech thirty years ago, as he collected the Nobel Peace Prize, Nelson Mandela spoke of a “common humanity” in which all South Africans would live “like the children of paradise.” In this final episode, in which Fergal Keane and Milton Nkosi re-visit some of the places and people they encountered 30 years ago, they are in the Western Cape, around Cape Town. They visit a school in the sprawling Khayelitsha township, and the university in Stellenbosch, once the centre of white and Afrikaner intellectual thought. With the country's high crime rates, lack of jobs, violence and intense corruption, is all lost or can South Africans still hold onto hope?

After living in Istanbul for more than four years, Orla Guerin considers the roots of his success and what the future holds for Turkey. South Africa's electricity supply crisis has made 'load shedding' a term many people now dread - as it can mean power cuts of 8 to 10 hours a day. Stephen Sackur saw the effects on life in the township of Khayelitsha in Cape Town, and asked whether the problem's now fuelling demands for political change. After China's authorities failed to see the funny side of a joke about a military catchphrase, live performance is a riskier business these days in Beijing. Stephen McDonell is a regular at the city's sometimes raucous music venues, and detects a slight muting of the atmosphere, as Party officials' scrutiny of their paperwork - and the musicians' permits - sharpens.
