The issues of white privilege and helping people to understand the difference between "black lives matter" and "all lives matter" have taken prominence in our national dialogue. This week, we've changed the format of Dad Chat, moving away from random articles, and attempting to focus on a single topic that is of importance to our dad community. This is why we invited Alex Minor, LinkedIn video expert, a former musical collaborator of Greg's (a.k.a. "G-ro"), video editor and DP, father, to talk with us about what it means to be black in America, and ways we can speak to our kids about race. This was an eye-opening conversation for both of us because it showcased to us that rather than just make assumptions on the best way to talk about race and privilege in America, the best bet is to actually engage in a dialogue. In this critical conversation, we talk about the importance of empathy, of acknowledging differences in the experiences we have, the need for white people to call out those who are intolerant, and take umbrage at our calls for equality. "It doesn't matter if I say. It does matter what YOU say." -Alex Minor. It's week 4, or 5, or 43 of our quarantine and to help keep our sanity we've brought in fellow dad, author, entrepreneur and awesome human being Ryan Berman, father to Herman Berman (dog), aged 10, Micah (human boy), aged 7, and Mackenzie (human girl), aged 4. He is the founder of Courageous, a creative change consultancy that has worked with some of the world's largest brands and focuses on helping them become more courageous. His best-selling book 'Return on Courage: a playbook for courageous change' addresses this head-on. Berman also has his own "Courage Brand" called Sock Problems: an altruistic sock company that socks different problems in the world. In case you don't read to the end, a few things we wanted to share:* Ryan was generous enough to share his Personal Values Assessment which you can access here: https://corporaterenegade.d.pr/MRZ849* You can learn more about Ryan's company by visiting https://www.couragebrands.com/What are we discussing? * Being courageous as dads during a scary time. Ryan shared his philosophy on courage and defined it as taking action on your dreams. Living a courageous life allows us to have more space and time to be present with our kids. * Attention + Belief = Dad. Ryan's formula about how to carve out meaningful time for our children…giving them our attention and having belief in our kids, all while figuring out what our own values truly are. * Some Good News. We spend some time talking about episode 2 of Some Good News, as brought to you by Jim Halbert, aka Jon Krasinski. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOe_y6KKvS3PdIfb9q9pGug* Did Quibi launch at the worst possible time? We discuss the new streaming service and why adding more choice may mean fewer eyeballs watching the new platform. https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2020/04/quibi-app-downloads-day-one* Where the #DadSquads at? Moms are famous for their groups of fellow moms. Dads are often left by the wayside. We discuss why dads need friends now more than ever. https://www.parents.com/parenting/dads/as-dads-we-need-parent-friends-just-as-much-as-moms/* Finally, we discuss an article from Ryan, where he shares why we need creativity now more than ever. https://blog.leadercast.com/blog/creativity-in-a-time-we-need-it-mostSome final thoughts that came up during this episode: How do you turn this time into something that is proactive? How do you handle the moral fatigue we are all facing? What do you do when you can't control 85% of your life right now? What do you do with the 15% you can control? Find something worth fighting for. This is the great reset of our lives. Do the thing you want to do. On this special episode of Dad Chat, we’ve got 4 dads representing 9 kids across 3 states. We’re excited to introduce you to Darren McCarthy (father of 2), and Brian Powers (father of 3), self-proclaimed “Rogue Educators” from Sound Foundations for Parenting. Their company helps to create amazing resources for parents to help us maintain our sanity while raising the little ones who control our lives. And sanity is definitely needed during this age of the Coronavirus. Among the many projects they are working on is a joint project with us Dad Chat Folks that we’re excited to call “Big Rocks, Little Kids — A 30-Day Calendar, Planner & Resources To Help You And Your Kids Succeed At Home, which you can download for free by visiting bigrockslittlekids.com right now. What are Big Rocks? They are the big foundational items that every parent needs to focus on every day in order for their kids to thrive. Some “Big Rocks” include Sleep, Exercise, and Nutrition. When you ensure that you focus on the big rocks every day, you can then start to move onto the little rocks as well. We cover a lot in this episode (there’s 4 of us so we’ve got a lot to say), but listed below are some choice quotes presented in no particular order: - “We need to over communicate.” - “We don’t know what we don’t know.” - “Your emotional state will have an impact on how your kids get through this.”- “But if we get through this whole thing and our kids are able to get through a pandemic in one piece. It’s a success.”You can learn more about Darren and Brian’s company by visiting: http://www.soundfoundationsforparenting.net/As always, please send your thoughts, love and hate mail, and articles you want to be discussed on the next episode of Dad Chat by sending an email to greg@ambitious.com or sending a text to 321.351.3363Don't forget to subscribe, and please screenshot this episode and share it on social media. Who the hell are these guys and why should you listen to them? In this special shorter episode of Dad Chat, we’ll get to know Matt Goldfarb — single dad, entrepreneur, writer, and master of a few too many pop culture references. Matt talks candidly about the life of a single dad, the evolution of his parenting and his relationship with his ex (believe it or not they are actually great friends), how he spends his time when he’s in dad mode vs. bachelor mode — working, dating, maintaining sanity…plus a mini impromptu manifesto on what Dad Chat is truly all about. It’s a short one but chock full of good stuff. Who the hell are these guys and why should you listen to them? In this special 15-minute episode of Dad Chat, we’ll get to know Greg Rollett — father, husband, entrepreneur and apparently, former hip-hop rapper and musician. Learn how “G-RO” (yes, that was his stage name), went from touring musician, to serial entrepreneur, to father of three, all while growing his businesses and still making sure never to miss his kid’s baseball games (which he coaches). It’s 15-minutes of raw nuggets, unfiltered and vulnerable. Welcome to Episode 1 of Dad Chat, the show that helps today’s ambitious dad to get the news and insights (along with color commentary) to help them take over the world and still get home in time for dinner. Today’s Greg and Matt breakdown:- The new Apple iPhone 11 launch and why dads can barely take pictures let alone figure out which of the million lenses to choose when trying to capture that perfect shot of their kid backflipping off the roof. - The inspiring story of the kid who’s college t-shirt design got him ridiculed in the lunchroom, but ultimately made him the coolest kid at school after his story went viral. https://www-m.cnn.com/2019/09/07/us/bullied-student-university-of-tennessee-shirt-trnd/index.html- And…they give their 2-cents about work-life balance coming on the heels of a story about a hard-working dad who received the heart-breaking news that one of his twin sons had passed away WHILE he was on a conference call telling the attendees that he hadn’t taken a vacation in more than 6 years (Their advice? Don’t be that dad).https://metro.co.uk/2019/09/07/emotional-message-workaholic-dad-found-son-8-died-conference-call-10701380/These stories and more in this first episode of Dad Chat.
