Add in unhinged pranks, a pocket bullet gone wrong, and a front yard incident that'll have you questioning everything… yeah, it gets feral. They close it out with nostalgic, cringe-worthy throwbacks—childhood trauma, middle school madness, and the kind of stories you won't believe actually happened. This week on Mark and Pete, we take a hard look at a British political landscape that feels increasingly unstable, unserious, and oddly theatrical. The episode opens with the defection of Robert Jenrick from the Conservatives to Reform UK, using the moment as a springboard to assess the wider collapse of trust, loyalty, and coherence in UK politics. We explore what this says about principle versus ambition, and why voters are left feeling like spectators at a knife-fight conducted behind closed doors. We then turn to one of the most controversial proposals currently causing uproar in Westminster and beyond: Labour's support for a vast new Chinese embassy in London, positioned alarmingly close to sensitive data infrastructure and security services. We unpack the public backlash, the national security concerns, and the broader question of whether Britain has lost its instinct for strategic caution in an increasingly hostile global environment. Finally, we step away from geopolitics and return to something unexpectedly grounding. Winnie-the-Pooh turns 100, and celebrations at the Hundred Acre Wood prompt a reflection on tradition, cultural memory, and why a fictional bear created a century ago still resonates more deeply than much of modern public life. In a week defined by political manoeuvring and institutional fragility, Pooh offers a quiet reminder of friendship, loyalty, and simple wisdom. As ever, the episode blends current affairs, cultural commentary, poetry, and Scripture, offering a thoughtful Christian perspective on power, prudence, and what endures when everything else seems to be wobbling.

Backstabbing, faux-sincerity, clawing one's way to the top, class division, those at the top thumbing their noses at those further down the ladder....all political concepts, right? Actually, all of this is in reference to the 1975 Robert Altman film “Nashville” about the country music scene....which in itself serves as a political allegory. Welcome to episode 132 of See Hear. In the early seventies, Robert Altman was becoming known as a director of ensemble pieces without the usual approach to narrative. He could be seen as being part of the New Hollywood that emerged in the late 60s, but truth is, he was a film maker unto himself....as different from everything else that was going on as other directors that emerged in this period were to what came before. He already had some hugely important films like M*A*S*H and The Long Goodbye, but to many, Nashville is considered his masterpiece. It featured multiple storylines surrounding musicians, hangers on, lovers, and political strategists. The film takes place over 5 days leading up to a concert supporting a presidential candidate. In between, we musical performances that reflect the political era – some in bars, some in the Grand Ol' Opry, some in hotel rooms. The film shows many of these people in a poor light – some are greedy, some are deluded, all are desperate. Many of the songs in this film were composed by the actors, leaving the Nashville music fraternity annoyed that they weren't consulted, and that these pesky Northerner actors thought they could understand what country music was about. Altman must have been forgiven as his final film many years later was A Prairie Home Companion (a very early See Hear podcast focus). Tim is taking a few shows off, so wasn't available, but Kerry and I were thrilled to be joined by co-host of the Stinking Pause Podcast (and occasionally Reel Britannia) Charlie Mahoney. He's a confessed Altman fan and brought some wonderful conversation and insight. We look forward to welcoming him back to future shows. Jennifer Selby Long has spent three decades coaching tech leaders through the messiest corners of organizational change. In this episode, she tackles everything from leadership blind spots to stakeholder tug-of-wars and shares why handling office politics doesn't have to feel like an episode of Survivor. Whether you're managing a team or just trying to stay afloat during corporate upheaval, Jennifer's strategies will help you keep your cool and make an impact.Key Highlights of Our Interview:Aligning Change with Personal Motivations“People don't move mountains for stock prices or cost savings. They do it when the change connects to their personal ‘why'—what matters most to them as individuals.”Recognize the Root of Politics“Politics can stem from unhealthy leadership, but more often, they arise from competing needs and varied skill levels among stakeholders. Identifying the source is key to navigating them.”Empathy as a Superpower“The path through political challenges begins with empathy. Understand the needs of those with power—even if you think they don't deserve it—and align your strategy with their goals.”Avoid Playing Psychologist“Trying to diagnose your boss's issues only disempowers you. Focus on what you can control instead of guessing why your boss behaves the way they do.”Assess the Real Problem“Ask yourself: Is the boss genuinely ineffective, or am I resisting the changes they're implementing? Recognizing your own resistance can help you approach the situation constructively.”_________________________Connect with us:Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Jennifer Selby Long______________________--**Chief Change Officer**--Change Ambitiously.
