I'm going to be a voice for these childrenChris Page, the BBC's Ireland correspondent speaks to the Irish historian Catherine Corless, who has changed history in her own country.When she began to research a long-closed mother and baby home near where she lived, she encountered local resistance. But her dogged investigation led to the discovery that hundreds of babies and young children were buried in mass, unmarked graves inside a disused sewage tank at the site in Tuam, Ireland.Her work led to the discovery of the scandal of Ireland's historical mother and baby institutions, which housed unmarried mothers and their babies at a time when they were ostracized by Irish society and often their families too. An inquiry launched by the Irish government into the network of homes concluded about nine thousand children died in the eighteen homes investigated.The revelation led to apologies from the Catholic Church in Ireland, the Irish Government, the council which owned the home in Tuam and the religious order which ran the home. Police Death By Their Own Hand: A Father's Story and Crusade. The tragedy of losing a child is one no parent should ever endure. But for Brian Sizemore, that pain is now a daily reality, and a lifelong mission. His son, Lucas Henry Sizemore, was just 24 years old when he died by suicide. A newly sworn Atlanta City Police Officer, Lucas had recently graduated from the police academy and was serving proudly in Zone 4 Evening Watch. His passing sent shockwaves through the department, his community, and especially his grieving family. A Father's Crusade Determined that their son's death not be in vain, Brian and Marie launched LUCAS, an acronym for Law Enforcement's United Crusade Against Suicide. The foundation's goal is to raise awareness about suicide among police officers and push for stronger mental health resources within departments across the country. I cannot escape growing old. I am of the nature to have ill health. I cannot escape having ill health. I am of the nature to die. I cannot escape death. All that is dear to me, and everyone I love, are of the nature to change. There is no way to escape being separated from them… Looking deeply at each remembrance and breathing in and out with our awareness of each one, we engage our fear in an empowered way… Most of us don't want to acknowledge it, so we live more or less in denial. Yet down deep in the recesses of our minds, we know it's true. When we suppress our fearful thoughts, they continue to fester there in the dark. We are driven to consume in an attempt to forget and keep those thoughts from surfacing in our conscious mind. Running away from our fear ultimately makes us suffer and makes others suffer, and our fear only grows stronger… Invite your fear into consciousness, and smile through it; every time you smile through your fear, it will lose some of its strength. If you try to run away from your pain, there is no way out... We must invite these things up into our mind consciousness every day and tell them, “My dear, I'm not afraid of you. I'm not afraid of my fear. It is my nature to grow old; I cannot escape old age.” When fear manifests, we want to have the seed of mindfulness also manifest to embrace it. So we have two energies present—the first is the energy of fear, and the second is the energy of mindfulness. The fear receives a bath of mindfulness and becomes a little bit weaker before it drops back down to the depths of our consciousness in the form of a seed.
