On this episode of the Breakthrough Builders Podcast, Jesse is joined by the writer Daniel H. Pink. Dan and Jesse have a far-reaching conversation that touches upon:The formative role of reading in Dan's childhood, and the importance and randomness of having access to great libraries as a son of the State of Ohio (4:33)How Dan becomes so enthralled with a subject that he chooses to write a book on it (which he's now done 7 times!) (6:35)The high regard in which Dan holds the structure of a book, and the high bar he sets for himself in continually revising his initial structural hypotheses as he writes (8:53)How Dan developed a writing style that's intellectually coherent and wonderfully accessible (11:01)The importance of cross-disciplinary thinking in today's world (14:08)How Dan asks the right questions in his research to obtain valuable and insightful responses (15:50)The importance of constantly pushing to get feedback from people who have “taste and judgment” – and who will also be radically candid with their feedback (18:06)The “wide diet” of reading that Dan recommends if one is interested in growing and improving as a writer (20:07)Reflections on the applicability of the theses of three of his books – A Whole New Mind (2005), Drive (2009), and The Power of Regret (2022) – to our world today (21:28)The distinction and relationship between “Big P” and “Little P” Purpose in our lives, and how Dan sees “Thinking as a form of Doing and Doing as a form of Thinking” (25:34)Regret as a specific case of the more general case of the need to embrace paradox in our lives (27:59)Dan and Jesse also discuss Dan's favorite Ohio sports memory, the authors he admires most, what he sees as his biggest professional breakthrough (hint: it's not what you think), and his view on who really won the Toledo War. Guest BioDaniel H. Pink is the author of five New York Times bestsellers, including his latest, The Power of Regret: How Looking Backward Moves Us Forward. His other books include the New York Times bestsellers When and A Whole New Mind — as well as the #1 New York Times bestsellers Drive and To Sell is Human. Dan's books have won multiple awards, have been translated into 42 languages, and have sold millions of copies around the world. He lives in Washington, DC, with his family. When one of my coaches bought a second Audi, I had a ton of judgement. I was like does she not care about the environment? She's so wasteful with her money. But then after some reflection I realized that Dax Sheppard, who's podcast I love and listen to often, has about 15 vehicles. And I've never once judged him. If women have money, I'm very judgemental of what they do with it. But with men, not so much. And this is fucking with my sacred goal of building my business, helping more people and building more wealth. October 12th, 2021 will be an amazing day in human history. It's two days away from my birthday. It's the 43rd anniversary of Sid Vicious being arrested for murder. And it's the return of Bring In The Backups to a podcast app near you. No longer must you workout to the sound of Dax Sheppard or Jason Bateman talking about difficult directors they've worked with. Gone are the days of listening to Joe Rogan for your COVID health advice. Now you can tune into me prattle on about how Akili Smith got screwed and flirt with my wife, and unlike Sid Vicious, I won't murder her. It's been too long for the clipboard army. Season 2 burst out the gates on TUESDAY, OCTOBER 12TH with new guests, classic bits, and some shit you will probably like, I think, if you're already reading this. Also, are my fans ok being called the clipboard army? Let's see if it catches on. Short one today, josh talks about hand maids tail, we find out what Fred durst Dylan is and we decide if Dax Sheppard is hot or not.
Spotify charges ahead Spotify continues to dominate over all other podcasting platforms, announcing they have 165 million paid subscribers (compared to Apple's estimated 55 million) and that their ad revenue was up 627% in Q2. Impressive. This comes on the heels of Spotify continuing to invest heavily in both content and technology: the recent acquisitions of podcast juggernauts, Call Her Daddy (hosted by Alex Cooper) and Armchair Expert (hosted by Dax Sheppard), and a software company called Podz, which allows for automated clips to be pulled from episodes. The podcast wars are heating up, folks. And we promise to keep you informed. We ❤️ Simone. A lot. Perhaps the most famous athlete at this summer's Olympic Games, Simone Biles, shockingly withdrew from competing in the women's gymnastics team event on Tuesday, citing concerns over her mental health. Gone are the days athletes had to push through the pain, risking serious injury, and mental health repercussions. These athletes are advocating for themselves and putting their own wellbeing first. We saw this with Naomi Osaka at the French Open. And now Simone is saying her mental health is more important than an Olympic medal. We applaud you Simone. You really are a true role model. ...And then Michael Andrew is a whole other story (FYI - we don't ❤️ him) One of the top US male swimmers, Michael Andrew, announced prior to the Games that he was not vaccinated and had no plans to get vaccinated. His rationale? He didn't want to risk any effect the vaccine might have on his body and performance. Talk about the utmost display of selfishness and disrespect this decision has towards his teammates (if anyone tests positive they're done at the games), not to mention towards the people of Japan (who are experiencing record level of Covid cases). One former Olympic US gold medal swimmer called him out in her now viral twitter rant, while others have defended his right to do what he wants. This led us to thinking when brands chose to sponsor a big name athlete, you really need to consider things beyond just their athletic prowess. Their social media activity. Their social activism and the causes they support. And are they an anti-vaxxer?!? Is aligning with someone as great a swimmer as Andrew, knowing his stance on vaccines, worth it? And the gold medal goes to...Tik Tok! With athletes having to isolate, and broadcasters not having the same access to them as they did during past games, Tik Tok has become the great connector at this year's Olympic Games. (Is it any surpirse that a bunch of locked up Gen Z'ers of coure turned to Tik Tok?) Athletes have been using the platform to share 'behind the scenes' moments, such as testing out the cardboard ‘no sex' beds, their pre-competition preparation rituals, and even the food they're eating the cafetarias. Seriously, if you haven't looked up the hashtag #olympictiktok, do it! It's just as, if not more, entertaining than the events themselves! Sorry NBC, but Tik Tok is our unofficial Olympic broadcaster now. The revenge of the unitard It seems that some female athletes are sick and tired of being told what to wear when they compete. Especially when what they're supposed to wear is skimpy, barely-there clothing. We saw this last week when the Norweigan women's beach handball team opted to wear biker shorts instead of the mandated bikini bottoms, and then received a fine for not complying. (Shout out to rockstar Pink for offering to pay their fines) And this week, the German women's gymnastics team chose to wear a unitard instead of the high cut, swim-suit style outfit you normally see at competition, as a statement against the oversexualization of women in their sport. And while we're on the subject of more inclusive athletic apparel for women, Adidas launched a Burkini line of swimwear in the middle east. And to kick-off the new line, and in a true grandiose Dubai way, they made a billboard that's a real pool with Burkini-clad swimmers enjoying the water.

Phil, Jake and Beth are joined by writer, model and friend Eirinie Carson to rank the TV sitcom Frasier, the British Royal Family, and fast fashion on the List of Every Damn Thing.Follow Eirinie on Instagram (@eirinieeee) and Twitter (@Eirineee). In Apple & Onion, Richard Ayoade plays Onion. He and his best friend Apple live in an apartment and deal with various problems. Everyone they know is food. It's strange because their friend Falafel has ground onions inside of him and they never mention it. It's like Pixar's Cars where it's best not to think about it too much. Here's some examples of the rules of anthropomorphic food on the show. Sitcoms discussed in this episode include Cheers, 30 Rock, Seinfeld, The IT Crowd and Peepshow. Phil also brings up That Mitchell & Webb Look, which isn't sit but is com. We were right in assuming Kelsey Grammer hung out with Robin Williams. It turns out they were roommates at Julliard. It's possible they may have used cocaine together. Here's the article Beth mentions about Grammer's problematic politics putting the Frasier reboot at risk. When Jake says the character of Daphne Moon reminds him of Cathy, this is what he's talking about. There's some talk of how Julia-Louis Dreyfus / Elaine changed throughout the course of Seinfeld. It's possible when Phil said this what really was happening was that he himself was growing into manhood and began to look at JLD differently. Here's some fish-throwing at Pike Place Market. Our Black Frasier discussion includes the one on 30 Rock as well as Phoebe Robinson podcast. Eirinie doesn't think Choppin' Broccoli is funny but Jake still does. Here's Monica Bellucci in a latex dress from The Matrix movies. She wears more than one so here's a video of all Monica Bellucci content from those films, compiled by someone operating with one hand. Most of Jake & Beth's research on the royal family was done by watching The Crown on Netflix. Jake also listened to the Prince Harry interview on Dax Sheppard's podcast. Fast fashion retailers discussed include H&M, UNIQLO, Target and Old Navy. They're all doing okay so we didn't provide links. Lizzo is defending herself after receiving a bunch of backlash after promoting a juice cleanse she went on. She posted videos to her TikTok and Instagram showing the progress photos of her 10 day cleanse and explained that after messing up her body by not eating properly. The comments quickly filled with people saying that she is promoting diet culture and unhealthy practices. Others say they were surprised at the fact that she would promote limited eating to people when she is all about preaching body positivity. Lizzo responded by posting a video explaining that she didn't do the cleanse in order to lose weight but to fix her stomach after eating lots of spicy food and drinking a lot in November. She talked about the benefits like sleep, inner peace, mental stability, her skin and more. She also made a post on her instagram saying, “To the people who look to me, please do not starve yourselves. I did not starve myself. I fed myself greens and water and fruit and protein and sunlight. You don't have to do that to be beautiful or healthy. That was my way. You can do life your way. Remember, despite anything anyone says or does ✨DO WHAT YOU WANT WITH YOUR BODY” Shawn Mendes opened up about people assuming and guessing his sexuality when he was on the podcast Armchair Expert with Dax Sheppard. He talked about having to respond to the speculation and said “It was so frustrating for me because there were some people in my life that I was very, very close to who were gay and in the closet, and I felt like this real anger for those people. I don't know, it's such a tricky thing. You want to say, ‘I'm not gay but it'd be fine if I was gay, but also there's nothing wrong with being gay but I'm not.' You don't really know how to respond to the situation.” He said that people have been calling him gay since he was 15 because of his feminine characteristics but when on to say that men shouldn't feel shamed for being vulnerable and holding in emotions. It is nice that this is the message that he and people like Harry Styles are pushing because it's totally true - we don't need these “manly men” - we just need people who are comfortable in their skin. After three years we are finally on our way to getting new music from Lorde. She went on a big trip to Antarctica last year that she says has been a huge influence on the album she is working on now. Taylor Swift cleared up the rumours that she has a third secret album on the way. A lot of fans thought we could expect another one since they found the word “woodvale” in white font found on a photo she posted. Taylor was on Jimmy Kimmel and explained that leaving that word there was actually an accident. She explained that she was keeping the album title “folklore” such a secret when creating the album and album art that she would use the word “woodvale” as a place holder. She said they were playing around with how the album title would look but then she ultimately decided to go without any text but forgot to remove the word. She said there is no album coming. I think the title of this episode sort of says it all.. Do you ever feel like a fraud? And I'm pretty sure I know the answer. For almost everyone that answer is going to be yes. Because there has been a time at some point in our lives where we felt like a fraud. An imposter. Total fake. Maybe it was at work. Maybe it was hanging out with the cool kids. Maybe it was at a school meeting or giving advice to a friend. That sense of doubt has a tendency to sneak in on all of us at some point or another, even if we are super successful or seem to have it all together. This morning I got up, completely drained and completely exhausted from being up with the kids a million times through the night and because the cat decided that 4am was a great time to attack my feet. Michael was gone for work already so I got up at the last possible second and got the kids out the door to school, before coming home and climbing back in bed for a quick nap that turned into a nap with an extra hour and change of hitting the snooze button cause I just didn't want to get up. In those moments of trying to convince myself to get out of bed and get started on the day, I felt like a fraud and a failure, which is ridiculous because there is zero reason I shouldn't have gone back to bed to refresh and have a better jump on the day, but it is SO easy to feel like we need to be perfect. To criticize ourselves or beat ourselves up for every little thing. I could look at the morning and think “geez, I give out parenting advice on the regular and here I am on a school morning asking my 8 year old to get the 5 year old cereal and help her get dressed and make sure his brothers are up too because I want to hit snooze one more time” Which honestly, if it were every day wouldn't be ideal, but truthfully, because its NOT every day, he probably felt really proud that he could help Mom out and contribute in such a big way. It probably gave him a sense of significance and just isn't that big of a deal. Its THAT easy for it to start though. It can be the littlest action or thought that leads people to question everything, and for some it can be paralyzing. They don't move, they don't change anything because they feel like people will find them out. Obviously the simplest answer is just to be completely authentic, and not present any kind of façade or front, show people just as many of your imperfections as what you would want them to see and accept your entire self, for who you really are… but what about when you doubt even the things you are really and truly good at? Last summer I had a client show up for a maternity session, and she brought her bestie along to the appointment. As soon as they walked in the door I felt like I knew the friend. Maybe not in real life, more like she reminded me of someone, or looked and sounded just like a celebrity. Of course since I pay very little attention to the celebrity world and am pretty terrible with names and faces, I couldn't peg exactly who it was, but I figured it would probably come to me in the middle of the night, at which point I would email my client and prove just how much they looked alike. We joked that she must have a celebrity doppleganger, and that we should take a picture of her and run it through a similar image search on google to see who came up, and then moved on to creating the maternity portraits for my stunning client. I feel like its important to note that this client was just gorgeous. She knew her angles, her body was incredible and she made my job of creating stunning portraits super easy – this will be relevant later in the story. About half way through the session is dawned on me who this girl looked like, but of course, being terrible with pop culture I still couldn't remember the name of the actress, the show (actually I remembered it as a movie) or even the name of the character she played, but I described the show and my client was pretty quick to pick up on which one I was talking about. Oh! That's Life Unexpected. Yes. That's it! I had watched the entire thing on Netflix, and had a total girl crush on the main character, so I go on to confirm, that yes that's the one and then poorly describe the other characters. Yes, with the Dad, I think he was played by Dax Sheppard (totally not, Dax Sheppard, I seriously suck with this part – if you ever have me over for a trivia night make sure I'm on the other team) They quickly corrected me, with the name of the real character and at this point I am just super impressed with THEIR knowledge and thinking that if I were to play trivia on THEIR team I might actually win for the first time in my life. But yes, this is definitely the show and so I look back to my client to confirm, does she not look EXACTLY like the girl from the movie? Like its really and truly uncanny how much these two look and sound a like. My client laughs and says “totally, that's totally her”. Me, still not getting it, says “right?! Its crazy, they are twins” and then she laughs again and says, no no, it IS her, she's the actress from that show. Her name is Britany Robertson and not only was she in that show, but she's been in tons of other things, including a Dog's Purpose which I had literally watched 3 days before. At that point we all had a pretty good laugh and I jokingly told them off for leaving me hanging and not telling me when I first said she looked like a celebrity and got on the with the shoot. The point of this story though, is what happened immediately AFTER making this realization. I went from thinking “This is a blast, these two are so awesome, confident and fun, I wish I could be friends with them so we could hang out like this all the time.” To realizing that this celebrity has probably been photographed in the most glamorous studios, but the most talented photographers in North America for magazine covers and promotional pieces for her movies and then completely and totally second guessing my skills as a photographer. What kind of garbage is that?! I have been in this industry for over 10 years and have spent thousands and thousands of hours perfecting my craft. I literally have THOUSANDS of happy customers to back up that I do, in fact know what I'm doing and I'm great at it, but this one little realization and comparison suddenly had me feeling like a complete and total imposter in my own studio. Let me be clear. This was ALL me. They did nothing, said nothing. There was no judgement from anywhere except my own brain. Nothing actually happened or changed, except my own thought pattern, and thankfully at this point in my life I was able to quickly recognize exactly what was happening and stamp out the negativity really quickly. My client loved her images. Of course she did, she was incredibly beautiful and I am professional whose job is to make people like ever MORE beautiful. But it is that easy for us to suddenly feel like a fraud, and if we aren't aware we can quickly spiral into believing it and acting accordingly. This is SO dangerous to our lives and businesses. You start second guessing and suddenly boundaries disappear, compromises are made, discounts are given and it is all because of your own thoughts and feelings, not because of reality of anyone else's perceptions. Or even worse, other people's perceptions end up being shaped by your lack of confidence. Think you are a bad parent and feel super unsure of your decisions? Well, kids have the best BS meters I've ever seen and if you don't believe yourself when you tell them to do something there is a good chance they aren't going to do it. Lacking total confidence in your job? No one is going to put their faith in you. I remember starting out as a baby photographer and my clients would walk all over me. They would try to change the way the baby was posed, move the lights, tell me we needed to go to a different spot, ignore my requests to not try to get the baby's attention, and so many other things that completely messed up the session. It drove me nuts, because when super passive people came in and just sat quietly on the sidelines I could get great images, but as soon as parents with bigger personalities came in and started taking over it went downhill fast and I was never happy with the images. This wasn't their fault though. It was mine. MY lack of confidence in what I was doing made them view me as an amateur and second guess my abilities, so they would try to help me – even though they had even less clue about what they were doing and couldn't see the vision like I could. My lack of confidence meant we both lost out. As I gained confidence in my skills and developed a really good system of running my sessions I found I ran into less and less pushy parents, and more and more people trusted me to do my things and create their images while they relaxed and enjoyed the magic. I wish that I had realized this sooner though, that even though I was nervous I needed to show up confident in my skills and talents and take the lead. It would have led to a lot less stress for everyone involved. – So if you are just starting out please keep this in mind and learn from my mistake! Now obviously we have to have some self awareness. Don't claim to be an expert if you don't know anything about the topic, or just started your journey this morning – we need to be as open to consuming information and content as we are to producing and sharing it - but also recognize that in your own field you probably have a lot of experience and knowledge that seems like no big deal to you, but is actually completely ground breaking for someone else. My sister illustrated this beautifully for me this morning. I do not consider myself to be an Instagram expert by any means. As much as I want to love it I just don't find myself spending a ton of time of the app, and consistently fail to be consistent when it comes to sharing stories and posting. I have however done a ton of research because I knew it was something that would help my business, I hoped that I would learn to love it (who knows, maybe someday I will) and I knew that my listeners and other photographers in the industry needed help with it. So, tons of research done so that I could produce episodes to help myself and others be more effective with the platform. I used my own tips for a while to make sure that it worked and the research was accurate, but then fell off the bandwagon. Sometimes I look at my numbers and feel like a fraud for releasing those episodes on Instagram. Why am I pretending to have knowledge on this when I have such a small following? But then my sister texted me this morning, with a screen shot of her Instagram profile and the comment “Your Instagram tips really worked!” She had gained over 2000 followers since putting my tips into practice, and is seeing a dramatic climb. A great reminder that while sometimes we feel like the things we are doing aren't having an impact – they are. Its easy enough to wake up feeling like we don't know much or don't have anything to offer the world, to guide and contribute to the lives of others – not only in business, but life in general – and this is such a horrible thought, because contribution is so huge to our happiness. We need to give in order to feel fulfilled. We need to understand that we are not only participating in the world, but contributing to its success as well. So while it may be easy to fall into this trap, if you look at your experiences, education and accomplishments you can probably really quickly list a ton of ways that you can help others. Maybe you had to go dairy free and can share all of the amazing recipes you have learned and substitutes you have found. Maybe you have raised a child with ADHD and can support other parents who are just starting their journey. Maybe you have a killer weight loss or strength program that you tailored to yourself after having a baby. Maybe you have spent time learning the ins and outs of marketing on social media or know how to make a fool proof budget. You don't need to have a masters or PHD in any of these topics to be able to help someone else, you just need to look down the ladder to see who is a few rungs behind you, who hasn't had the experience or opportunity to learn the things that you have and then share that with them. There are so many things that we each learn in life based on our own experiences and it means that each and every one of us has SOMETHING to offer and those things are valuable – both as a contribution to society and in many cases, monetarily. Don't doubt your worth. Don't doubt that you are worth charging for your skills and talents in your business, or that you are a valuable contributor to our society, because ironically that doubt actually takes away from your value. So next time you feel like a fake or a fraud, just remind yourself that no one knows everything, everyone is learning as they go and you have so much to offer this world. Allowing yourself to get swallowed up by feelings of inadequacy is only going to deprive the rest of us from sharing in your gifts or benefiting in your knowledge. Get out there and spread around your knowledge, your talents, build your business and trust that as you improve your life, you will also be helping others and improving their lives as well. Episode 18: What’s In The NameI’m extremely guilty of trying to come up with catchy names or titles for my podcasts and episodes. Unplugged and Totally Uncut, The Choice, View from the Writing Instrument and Pod-crashing to name a few. Weird way out there labels but nothing as cool as Marc Maron’s WTF, Discraceland, The Joe Rogan Experience or Crime Junkie. While thumbing through iHeart Radio’s podcast directory I had an extremely difficult time locating Ellen DeGeneres’ On The Go. I wasn’t aware of the title. It wasn’t as easy as Elvis Duran On Demand or the Ben Shapiro Show. When I danced for the first time seven years ago with podcasting my DJ radio ego wanted to be cool like 48 Hours, Good Morning America and The Late Show. I wanted something that could be branded by me and not a major Broadcast Corporation. Podcasting was like taking my first baby step. No more scooching across the floor. I was up and ready to run. That’s when I realized babies don’t learn how to walk they learn how to fall. Podcasting’s the same. Everybody has the freedom to write, produce, act out and say whatever they want. What happens if the name of the show or episodes become that collection of letters people aren’t typing into search engines? No matter how many times you social network the presentation the image doesn’t come to mind when new and old listeners need something pretty awesome to stuff into their ears. I chose Unplugged and Totally Uncut because in the opening scenes of the digital race I thought I’d be original and let listeners in on the entire process of the interview. From the comedians walking into the studio and never knowing the show started before they arrived to leaving in my vocal mess ups cuz I want to be just as human as those who’ve chosen to take a shot and listen. More importantly I was the production director of six radio stations and editing was too time consuming so I had to come up with a name that basically said this is why it isn’t perfect. Unplugged and Totally Uncut. 7 years later, as a personality I’m still unplugged. I’ve always been on the strange side. I’m ok with a head dented in by the school of hard knocks. The totally uncut part has change tremendously. I’m an editing whore. It took me the longest time to learn how to edit for podcasting versus editing for a terrestrial radio show. Podcast listeners accept mess ups and but make them sound natural without having to edit the show to absolutely no mistakes. During those days my numbers were horrid. I remember a listener writing to me, “I love your effort but if I wanted to hear a show I’d turn on the radio. I’m more into conversations.” View from the Writing Instrument is the writer in me being awkwardly overbearingly too determined to never say, “I talk with published authors.” I wanted a podcast that was all about who what where why and when is your next book due? I live the life of writers because in all things I do it all starts with letters, sentences and paragraphs. My biggest battle wasn’t getting the authors but rather who and what is a writer? What about songwriting? What about script writers? Those that put together recipe books? It truly opened the door for me to broaden my niche. I also have a podcast called The Lyrics From Billy’s Forest. I don’t want to call this a dork moment because the story behind the name runs extremely deep into the soul of why broadcasting is the addiction. What do you think happens on The Lyrics From Billy’s Forest? A farm boy country songwriter gone big city? Nope. Mark Twain inspired tree hugging poetry? Nah. I spent two years writing in the forest that surrounds the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, NC. I started doing it the day my father passed away. I wrote things down no other place on the planet shot through my thinking system. I’d always tell myself “These aren’t my words. These are the lyrics from Billy’s forest.” A podcast I totally get into is NBC’s Songland podcast. The name says it all. But only if you’ve seen the weekly music show on television. The Best Of Steve Harvey is a great name. It tells thumbing around podcast listeners exactly what it is. The Best Of. Not to be confused with The Steve Harvey Show podcast. Armchair Expert from Dax Sheppard totally rocks my listening world. If my wife wouldn’t of told me about it the name Armchair Expert would’ve convinced me that it’s a sports show. Right? I’ve had a conversation with the creator of the LORE podcast. The Dude’s totally focused and turns word play into a candy store. Chelsea Handler’s Life Will Be The Death Of Me sounds like a totally awesome comedian driven laugh your ass off funny show. But it’s not. She’s incredibly brave to push mental illness forward and deals with it by taking the subject to multiple stages and through many different levels. When you listen to the podcast you’ll instantly get the name but without an explanation it kinda sat there for a while. I didn’t grow up listening to albums and cd’s that featured comedians. I’m that guy that’s an out of control visual. Stuff You Missed In History Class is a brilliant title. Food 360 with Marc Murphy puts being an all-out fan of food on the most important part of the day list. Purple Panties though kinda scares me. What if while listening my wife looks over my shoulder at the smart phone and sees only Purple Panties. That’s why I can’t figure out why E.D. commercials put so much focus on men having more sex. Guys are shouting “Hell yes!” Women on the other hand are thinking, “He’s gonna screw around on me.” Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend makes me laugh without listening. I wish he would’ve gotten into radio decades before podcasting. The Last Podcast On The Left makes me wonder about what’s across the hall on the right. What do you think this podcast is about? Judge the show by its title! The Last Podcast On the Left. It covers all the horrors our world has to offer but imagined and real. Demons and slashers to cults and serial killers. So what’s the moral of the story? There are millions of podcasts currently playing, many of which bare unique names that don’t always come up while using the search engine. I totally grasp the energy put into being original and how fun it can be to stick our way of thinking way out there globally. Thinking like a listener I’m reminded of my talk with program director of a Charlotte station in 1985. He wanted me to drop the name Arroe Collins. Listeners would write on the Arbitron Earl, Harrold, Errol and believe it or not Aerosmith. I disagreed and did everything I could to protect the name. 35 years in the same market and I still bump into people that greet me with, “Hey Arlo.” As in Guthrie. As big corporate business radio gets its arms wrapped around podcasting will those being hired need to create content need to shape up their names? The way I moved around the oddness of my titles was to put Arroe Collins on it first then the addition of the other title. A smarter me would of spelled my name A R R O W totally taking out the letter E.
Episode 17: TMIThis is gonna sound so 1990’s but in a way with so much change we can kinda still get away with it. How ya diggin the internet and all things connected? In so many ways it’s still making life easier while turning a lot of worlds upside down. Like the way we love, trust, shop and plan for an extremely unpredictable future with AI’s on the horizon. Speaking from the heart, the digital information age has had a hell of a good time pulling in volumes of information on all of us. Who, what, where, why and how we are and will become. The Russian’s and Chinese aren’t stealing our background and lifestyle. Aimlessly we’re giving it away on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Podcasting. In her book The Artist Way Julia Cameron clearly lays out the path that so many walk on. One of our cheap hidden away joys in life is standing in line at the grocery story comparing our experiences with those featured on magazine covers. Your day felt like crap while it was happening but it’s nowhere as bad as Brad Pitt and countless others in Hollywood. Don’t look now but I’m getting a vibe as to why the popularity of podcast listening is on a swing upward. It’s due to our need to compare stories. Interestingly enough there’s a lot of us tossing our lives out there in ways that haven’t been truly tapped into until now. With texting, emailing and blogging you truly couldn’t grasp the inflection and energy in our voice unless you were featured in a Vlog. Video Blogging. With podcasting the storytelling is wide open and wow there are some well-respected hosts and guests putting their private parts online so others can relate with or laugh about it. Howard Stern continues to set the pace when it comes to digging up hardcore nearly next to porn stories. His guests to this day find no reason to hold back. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to being a huge fan due to how low he can go. But but but… You have to fork out the bucks to get him on Sirus XM. Because of podcasting Stern’s no longer the only one going there. Dax Sheppard, Conan O’Brien, Chelsea Lately and hordes of others are deeply blessed with settling into a brilliant conversation then slowly opening the heart of the guest and then let them confess.I laugh like a child when I hear Mila Kunis drop a sailor sized F bomb while talking about what it’s like to be a mom. Comedian Nicole Byer discussing the placement and meaning of every tattoo on her body. Alec Baldwin unveiling why politics is extremely taboo with his brother to faking an Italian accent at dinner physically changes the flavor of your spaghetti. Because I listen so intently to podcasts the best part of the story is no longer in the tabloids. But how much information is too much? I host a show called The Choice. Its wide open on what it’s like to be creative and having to live with a world that fails to get what you’re going through. I have to be extremely honest in my episodes! Creativity and the act of allowing yourself to be a peace filled artist is hardcore and I’ve got the razor blade cuts on my arms to prove it. And I’m not alone. I’ve been a daily writer for twenty five years. When blogging was hot and moving forward I took the handwritten chicken scratch and set it free. Putting on the digital platform where you can physically hear my emotions wasn’t an easy journey. The early episodes from 2015 sound like I filled in a bunch of blank boxes. It took a few years to stop being a radio disc jockey doing a podcast to finally being real about having to deal with and come face to face with being creative. I don’t cuss but I do throw myself under the bus. Being truthful about the mental conditions a creative person deals with daily helps me with my other podcasts where I’m blessed to talk with the famous. I love listening to their stories unfold and with it a nugget of gold that didn’t make it to the grocery store checkout line. But are we sharing too much information. As a martial artist we were endlessly scolded if the Master found our notes in someone else’s hands. Too much information becomes another person’s weapon against you. What you pour into your extremely public podcast can be heard by potential employers. How you present your political or religious views are ways for outsiders to get inside. Podcasting presents one golden opportunity of strength. The power of one on one. I’m not seeing groups of people listening to the same podcast in the same room. I do though hear from a lot of single listeners taking in each and every word one at a time. I’m honestly shocked that Twitter lover President Donald Trump hasn’t gotten into podcasting. Not weekly addresses but podcasting like he Tweets. The man loves to use his voice on the smart phone app but hasn’t graduated to the podcast where we can hear every musical note used to make his point. This is another one of those situations of how much information is too much? Could he keep it together without loosely tossing out a few things that should’ve remains private? So what’s the moral of the story? There’s a lot of talking going on. A ton of subjects and confessions that leave the mind body and soul dangling on a string. As host and or producer of the podcast you’ve always got the power to cut up the conversation or simply let your guest know where you shouldn’t grow. I’ve had people tell me things about their television show that couldn’t hit the air. The event taking place was still a month out. That’s why I’m a true believer in recording everything then editing. I was with Phil Collen of Def Leppard yesterday discussing the bands events but the embargo to place it on the digital stage won’t be lifted until the end of the month. How much is too much information might actually reach a point where each podcast has to come with a permission to broadcast contract. The guest must lay down their signature as a way of giving clearance to the host and producer to post the conversation. Remember one valuable rule about podcasting. Just because you take down an episode doesn’t mean it’s gone from the world. Listeners have downloaded hundreds of thousands of my episodes. I don’t have Disney pockets to erase what once existed. Always keep your head on straight and play the game knowing it can always come back and bite you very very hard.

Want to leave your kids? (We won't judge). It can be hard, especially when it's your first time. Depending on the age, traveling without your kids can be difficult on both you and your children. Eric and Rachel talk about their very different experiences and how they coped (or helped their kids cope). As usual, they wander off to other topics. There's an exploration of Doctor Who, and Eric reveals once again how he remembers a thing, but not the details. He also makes up a podcast called Exploding Armchair, which we can only guess is a mashup of Exploding Unicorn from James Breakwell and Armchair Expert with Dax Sheppard.
