Elissa Strauss always knew she wanted to be a mother, but she also knew she didn't want motherhood to take over her personality. After all, she had spent years as a blogger making fun of anyone who took motherhood too seriously. She bemoaned the natural birth movement and people who made “mom friends.” Then Elissa had a son, and her view of caretaking started to shift. “I had put so much energy into figuring out how not to lose myself to caregiving,” Elissa writes in her new book, “that I completely ignored the possibility that I might, in fact, find some of myself there.” In this episode, Anna and Elissa talk about why it feels uncool to talk about liking motherhood, the ways caretaking can take from us, but also how it can fill us up and engender “moral transformation.” Plus, the economics of care, and what really valuing care in society would look like. Elissa's book is called When You Care: the Unexpected Magic of Caring for Others. She also wrote a piece last month in Slate called “It's Weird Times to Be a Happy Mother.” Are you a paid caregiver? We want to hear from you for a future listener episode. Doctors and scientists have been studying how our diet affects our health since the 18th century. But despite technological advancements and varying hypotheses over the years, there's a chance that the wisdom of the 1700s might be more accurate than more recent beliefs on how food contributes to our overall health. Gary Taubes is an investigative health science journalist and the author of books like Rethinking Diabetes: What Science Reveals About Diet, Insulin, and Successful Treatments and Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It. For decades, he's studied the history of diabetes and obesity research and found instance after instance of faulty science that's led to some of the most widely accepted beliefs about metabolic health.Gary and Greg deep dive into the centuries-long history of diabetes and obesity research, including some of the major moments and breakthroughs like the discovery of insulin. They also discuss what makes some science bad science, modern misconceptions about obesity and its causes, and the surprising impact WWII had on obesity research. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:What is an allegiance bias?38:59: It's the first hypothesis that tends to have such an advantage over all those that follow. That the others have to then try and replace that, and then more and more people buy into that first hypothesis and believe it, and they base their treatments on it, and they write papers and textbooks about it. They've become more and more biased. I was just speaking to a nutritionist 80-year-old tremendous nutritionist the other day who used the phrase allegiance bias. So you develop an allegiance to what you believe, to the technologies you're using, to the therapies you're giving, and to what your colleagues believe. And all of these reasons are why scientists are supposed to express hypotheses with such humility. You get an idea of what's working and what's not, and you voice it with incredible humility because the worst thing that can happen is that it be wrong and be embraced. And it's the easiest thing to have.Rethinking conventional wisdom in health01:09:16: The internet took away the gatekeepers. So for anyone who's suffering from obesity or diabetes, if the conventional wisdom works for you, then you're fine, right? You eat a little less, you exercise, and you don't live with obesity anymore—end of story. You don't need blood sugar medications, but if you've tried the conventional wisdom, as I think most people do, and it fails, then you start looking for alternatives. What makes a good scientist?24:34: When you do an experiment, you learn how you screwed up if you're a good scientist because, by definition, you're always doing something no one's ever done before because it's boring to do stuff that people have done before. So you're always doing something new. You're always working at the limits of what your apparatus or your observational equipment can do. And 99 times out of 100, you're going to screw up that first time out, and then you're going to learn how you screw up and you're going to fix it. And you iterate your way toward what you hope is truth.Show Links:Recommended Resources:CERNBradford Hill criteriaJohn RolloElliott P. National Weather Service La Crosse meteorologist Todd Shea in the studio discussing the ever-more common weird weather, a first-ever February tornado, no snow and how the job has changed. Shea has been doing weather in La Crosse since 1995 but he's been in the business since 1988. Part of what we talked about is the job itself, are there more or less people interested in the profession and how the profession has changed, even just in his time as a meteorologist. We also talked the first-ever February tornado to happen in Wisconsin — there were two a few days ago — and if these weird weather phenomenon are becoming more common. Lastly we got into a discussion about weather versus climate and whose responsibility is it to look into each of those things.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, we were fresh out of hydrogen so we need to watch Chain Reaction (1996) to learn how to make some more. How does this Cold Fusion adjacent movie draw on nuclear themes for its plot? Does the subplot about our heroes being framed as spies for China stealing national secrets have parallels to real life events? Did Evel Kinevil ever jump his stunt bike over a mushroom cloud? Tim Westmyer (@NuclearPodcast) and returning special guest Kevin answer these questions and more. Before we powered the city of Chicago with our Nalgene bottle, we recommend: -The Fugitive (1993 movie) -The Saint (1997 movie) -Gary Taubes, Bad Science: The Short Life and Weird Times of Cold Fusion, 1993 -Eduro Life Media, “Impossible Climb Andler 2019 – Dirt Bike Graveyard – Hill Climb,” YouTube -David Grann, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, 2017 We also recommend checking out: • Josh Friedman, “I'm Your Friend, Eddie,” I Find Your Lack of Faith Disturbing (Blog), August 24, 2005 • Free Energy Suppression Conspiracy Theory, Wikipedia • Beth Laski, “Reeves, Davis Ring Up ‘Dead' Cash,” Variety, January 8, 1995 • Tim Prokop, “Causing a Chain Reaction,” Movie (Aus), January/February 1997 • William J. In this episode, Mary and Erin discuss the ways that we re-set our attitude in the long weird times we're in. Hear some tips for instant forgiveness and the attitude re-set that a masterful person can practice. Enjoy this revisit episode fall of 2021.
The pandemic is waning… rising…changing? How do we walk through this scary life classroom with the grace of a master? Here's a show we did in the fall of 2021 that is still 100% relevant. Join Erin and Mary as companions as they support each other to be masterful with the aid of having good patterns in a day, and focusing more on our "being" as well as our "doing."

Strange times for Britain. And for William Pitt the Younger. While at the beginning of his time as Prime Minister, he'd had to contend with being in a parliamentary minority, losing votes right and left, he'd enjoyed extraordinary economic success. Now, though, with a powerful majority, he faced economic hardship and the unrest to which it led. Partly that was due to bad harvests as well as the impact of war. The turbulence was met with repression. Nowhere was that worse that in Ireland, where Britain put it down ferociously, though without addressing the fundamental problems, which would only lie in wait to preoccupy Pitt again later. As for the war, Britain, with its allies dropping out one after the other, was doing badly on land. But it was doing superbly at sea, as each of its three main rivals, France, Spain and Holland went down to spectacular defeat. And yet it was in the Royal Navy itself, that he came closest to facing his own defeat, as it too was caught up in the unrest sweeping the country. Welcome back to The Fallen Fruit! Alas, we are not all together in the tree house today (social distancing, obvi), but thankfully we have Zoom to bring us together on the Libra Full Moon. This episode was recorded on 4/7/2020 as the Moon arrived in her fullness. In this episode, Catherine dishes the big picture astrology in the times of CoVid. What do the planets have to say about this unprecedented global quarantine? When does it end? Catherine gives us the cosmological deets, Stephanie shuffles the divine wisdom of the tarot, and Lynette leads us on a meditation at the end! We know, the sound quality isn't what you're used to, but hopefully we will be back in the tree house soon!
