    Adam J. Milam, MD, PhD is a Senior Associate Consultant in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Mayo Clinic Arizona. Prior to starting this position, he completed his cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship at Cleveland Clinic and residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He graduated from Wayne State University School of Medicine. Prior to medical school, he attended Johns Hopkins University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Health. He also holds a Master of Health Science as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health from the Department of Mental Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.Dr. Milam has been actively involved in several national and state societies including the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, the National Medical Association, and the California Society of Anesthesiologists; he serves on committees for each of these organizations. He also is actively engaged in research; Dr. Milam's research is rooted in practices, policies, and interventions to address health disparities and health inequities. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed publications and has more than 75 national, international, and invited presentations. His research has been featured and disseminated in leading public health and medical journals as well as Men's Health, Rolling Stone, and US News & World Report. His work has been used to guide local and state legislation that promote health equity. Dr. Milam's research also explores barriers to and possible strategies to improve diversity in the medical workforce. He has received multiple national awards including the Herbert W. Nickens Scholarship from the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Excellence in Public Health Award from the U.S. Public Health Service Physician Professional Advisory Committee; Dr. Milam is also a member of the Delta Omega Public Health Honor Society.     Terri Babineau, MD, FAAFP, MSt, is an associate professor of family medicine at UVA. Her clinical interests are in underserved populations. She helps others manage burnout and stress through her role as volunteer CMO for SafeHaven. She is interested in all aspects of teaching with residents and medical students as she feels this sharpens her thinking skills and broadens her knowledge base. Dr. Babineau is a lifelong Virginian who attended the University of Virginia as an undergraduate and Eastern Virginia Medical School for medical school and her family medicine residency, where she served as chief resident. She is the founder of a number of free clinics and has developed ongoing clinics in Honduras and Haiti. Dr. Babineau completed a master's degree (MSt) from the University of Oxford in England in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, studying the science and theory of mindfulness and meditation practices. WHO recommends Malaria Vaccine - initially started as pilot program, reached 800K kids in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi - now recommends for widespread use, 4 doses starting at 5 months - not shown to impact any other vaccines kids get at that age 2. Covid Drug (good video and summary) - Merck released interim clinical trial data for monupiravir which showed 50% decrease in mortality in covid patients - waiting on FDA approval, first oral antiviral - countries purchased USA, Singapore, Australia -775 patients in Merck's study looked at hospitalizations or deaths among people at risk for severe disease. It found that 7.3% of those given molnupiravir twice a day for five days were hospitalized and none had died by 29 days after treatment. That compared with a hospitalization rate of 14.1% for placebo patients.     As you'll hear, Dr. Rebecca Scharf has always been fascinated by public health and caring for others. During a pediatric residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, she pursued her interests in caring for children with disabilities around the world as global health resident. Dr. Scharf later came to UVA in 2011 to care for children with developmental concerns and to work in the Center for Global Health. She is currently an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology. Here in the UVA Children's Hospital, she sees patients in four clinics: 1) Myelomeningocele/Spina Bifida, 2) Neuromuscular/Muscular Dystrophy/Spinal Muscular Atrophy, 3) International Child Development/Refugee, and 4) Neurodevelopmental Outcomes of Congenital Cardiac Disease. Rebecca Scharf enjoys teaching medical students about childhood disability and global health. Her research focuses on improving child development and nutrition in locations around the world, including Tanzania, Zambia, South Africa, and Brazil.
