What happens when we step outside the boundaries of the physical world?Psychiatrist Bernard Beitman and neuroscientist Marina Weiler dive deep into the mysteries of out-of-body experiences (OBEs), near-death experiences (NDEs), astral encounters, and the possibility of life beyond the body.Pre-order Dr. Beitman's newest book "Life-Changing Synchronicities: A Doctor's Coincidences and Serendipities" at Simon & Schuster, Barnes and Noble, Inner Traditions, Amazon, Books-a-Million, Bookshop.org (May 2025).Marina shares her personal brushes with the paranormal—including poltergeist-like events and vivid dreams of the departed—even though she has never had an OBE herself. Bernard recounts his own surreal journey to the "coincidence control office" during an out-of-body episode. Together, they explore how these extraordinary events can transform our perspectives, reduce fear of death, and inspire profound life changes. Can we meet others—or even non-human entities—while traveling the astral plane? Is consciousness truly separate from the brain? Join this fascinating conversation as science and the mystical collide, and discover how synchronicity, intention, and expanded awareness can reshape our understanding of reality.Marina Weiler is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS), University of Virginia. A trained neuroscientist with expertise in neuroimaging, brain stimulation, and consciousness studies, she investigates experiences that transcend traditional physical explanation. Her research has earned recognition from CAPES (Brazil), the Brazilian Academy of Neurology, the NIH, the Templeton World Charity Foundation, and the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Research.

Current mainstream science and philosophy portray mind, personality, and consciousness as nothing more than byproducts of brain activity. We speak with Dr. Kim Penberthy today who joined us from the University of Virginia. Kim wears many hats. She is a professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She is also a board certified clinical psychologist and conducts research, teaches, and provides clinical care at UVA in psychiatry and the cancer center. She also studies and researches after death communication. She lived on a farm in a house that witnessed Civil War strife, with her mother a nurse and her father a would-be farmer surgeon. Exposed to life and death on a farm, she began at an early age asking herself and her parents metaphysical questions – long before she became a clinician and research scientist. We hear about her life changing story at the beach and fascinating surgical table stories heard from her aging father. We learn about her pursuit in researching after death communications from those who lose loved ones and how this research may help develop more wholistic therapeutic approaches to grieving. A psychiatrist studied 1,000 near-death experiences. Here's what he discovered. Up Next ► Is there life after death? • Is there life after death? | Sam Harr... Near-death experiences are not a new phenomenon. They have occurred for millennia across the world. Studies of these experiences have revealed consistent patterns, namely a sense of overwhelming peace and well-being. While there is still controversy in regard to the cause of near-death experiences, they are now known to be fairly common. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Dr. Bruce Greyson: Dr. Bruce Greyson is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the UVA School of Medicine. Near death experiences change people's lives - and not always for the better. Most near-death experiencers say that they have trouble speaking about the experience because there just aren't words to describe it. It's like trying to draw an odor with a crayon. Experiencers describe a sense of connectedness to other people, to nature, to the Universe, and to the divine. For them, this changes everything. For instance, it makes them much less interested in power and fame. Experiencers almost always say, "This is the most important thing that's ever happened to me, and nothing else in my life compares to it." The most common change is that they are no longer afraid of death. --------------------------------------------- About Dr. Bruce Greyson: Dr. Bruce Greyson is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the UVA School of Medicine. Are dreams, hallucinations, and near death experiences all connected? Up Next ► Is there an afterlife? Here's what he saw while he was 'dead' • Is there an afterlife? Here's what he... Near-death experiences are profound events that often radically change the lives of those who have them. Features of near-death experiences include a sense of leaving the physical body, a life review, and encounters with a divine being or deceased loved ones. While some dismiss near-death experiences as dreams or the hallucinations of a dying brain, people generally do not have the same kinds of hallucinations. In contrast, the descriptions of near-death experiences are remarkably consistent across culture and time. ---------------------------------------------------- About Dr. Bruce Greyson: Dr. Bruce Greyson is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the UVA School of Medicine. Happy summer! Fr. Nathan is taking a few weeks off from recording The Joyful Friar Podcast. During this time, we will be replaying the most-watched episodes!Enjoy this encore episode where Fr. Nathan discusses Dr. Bruce Greyson's research on near-death experiences.Dr. Bruce Greyson is the Chester Carlson Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. He was previously on the medical faculty at the University of Michigan and the University of Connecticut, where he was Clinical Chief of Psychiatry. Dr. Greyson has consulted with the National Institutes of Health and addressed symposia on consciousness at the United Nations and at the Dalai Lama's compound in Dharamsala, India. He has earned awards for his medical research and was elected a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, the highest honor bestowed by that organization.Dr. Greyson's interest in near-death experiences began just a few months after graduating from medical school, when he treated an unconscious patient in the emergency room who stunned him the next morning with an account of leaving her body. That event challenged his beliefs about the mind and the brain, and ultimately led him on a journey to study near-death experiences scientifically, leading to more than a hundred publications in medical journals. He co-founded the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS), an organization to support and promote research into these experiences, and for 27 years edited the Journal of Near-Death Studies, the only scholarly journal dedicated to near-death research. Through his research, he has discovered common and universal themes in near-death experiences that go beyond neurophysiological or cultural interpretations, as well as patterns of consistent aftereffects on individuals' attitudes, beliefs, values, and personalities.Dr. Greyson is the author of "After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond." The book challenges our everyday ideas about our minds and our brains and offers key insights on how we can begin to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life.https://www.brucegreyson.comClick this link and let us know what you love about The Joyful Friar Podcast! We are thrilled to have Dr. Shushan with us again this year. His body of work in the field of near-death studies is unrivaled on near-death experience is unrivaled. He is a historian of religions, an award-winning author, and the leading authority on near-death experiences and the afterlife across cultures and throughout history. His books include The Next World: Extraordinary Experiences of the Afterlife, Near-Death Experiences in Indigenous Religions, and Near-Death Experience in Ancient Civilizations (coming soon from Inner Traditions). His forthcoming titles include The Historical Anthology of Near-Death Experiences, and Mind Dust and White Crows: The Psychical Research of William James (both as editor). Dr. Shushan is a Visiting Research Fellow at University of Winchester's Centre for Death, Religion and Culture; Adjunct Professor of Thantaology at Marian University; and Research Fellow of the Parapsychology Foundation. He was formerly Perrott-Warrick Researcher at University of Oxford's Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion; Scholar-in Residence at the Centro Incontri Umani (The Cross Cultural Centre), Ascona, Switzerland; and Honorary Research Fellow at the Religious Experience Research Centre, University of Wales Trinity Saint David. He has lectured at universities in the UK, Ireland, and Switzerland and has given numerous talks on his research in nine countries, and has appeared on the History Channel. Here's what leading scholars are saying about his work: “Gregory Shushan has produced the most important scholarly work on near-death experiences in the last thirty years. He describes the process by which, despite regular attempts to marginalize its power, the NDE has been perhaps the most important shaper of religious creativity in human history. This is a journey and an argument as fascinating and as engrossing as the social history of mankind itself.” -- Allan Kellehear, Clinical Professor, University of Vermont.“Near-Death Experience in Indigenous Religions is a tour de force. By comparing recorded cases from North America, Africa, and Oceania, Shushan presents a compelling argument for the centrality of near-death experiences to the development of religious ideas across time and culture. Any future discussions of NDEs and the origins of religion will need to take Shushan's major contribution into account.” -- Fiona Bowie, Research Affiliate, School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography, Oxford University; and founder of Afterlife Research Center “Gregory Shushan's new book provides a uniquely insightful and provocative analysis of near-death experiences that documents their formative influence on worldwide beliefs about an afterlife. His ethnological perspective results in a more comprehensive understanding of NDEs than a purely biological or psychological model can provide, and suggests that afterlife beliefs are rooted not in culture but in the universal human experience of NDEs. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand NDEs and their role in society.” -- Bruce Greyson, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia.READ MORE: https://www.gregoryshushan.com/Dr. Shushan will be presenting at our 2024 Conference on Death, Grief and Belief, online Saturday August 24, 2024. What if death isn't the end? NDEs may complicate what science teaches us about death and consciousness. Up Next ► Are near-death experiences real? Here's what science has to say • Are near-death experiences real? Here... Thousands of people across the world and throughout the centuries have reported near-death experiences (NDEs). Most NDEs share one common trait: an overwhelming sense of spirituality and connection with the Divine. NDEs strongly hint at the existence of an afterlife, but not everyone agrees. Have you ever wondered if near-death experiences are real? Many near-death experiencers verify that claim. They say that only until we leave our body are we capable of experiencing the entire spectrum of reality. They say once they left their physical body, their senses expanded exponentially. Dr. Bruce Greyson has studied over 1,000 cases of near-death experiences. He found consistent similarities in #NDEs that many of us have read about - the white light, incredible peace and love that is omnipresent in that realm, and the existence of a life review. This has led me to three questions:1. If my conscience is going to live on after I leave this body, should i live my life differently? 2. If I knew the place that I was going to was so beautiful, how would that affect my view of my own passing?3. What if I had a life review? Everything I ever did was going to flash before my eyes and I was going to feel the same pain or joy that I had inflicted on others, how would I treat people differently? In the next episodes of #HaveYouEverWondered? Researchers at the University of Virginia have investigated children's reports of memories of previous lives for nearly sixty years, studying more than 2,500 cases from around the world. In many cases, a deceased individual has been identified whose life matches the details given by the child. Common features in the cases include a child talking about a past life at a very early age, behaviors that appear connected to that life such as phobias related to the mode of death, and sometimes even birthmarks or birth defects that correspond to wounds the previous person suffered. Our conversation will highlight Dr. Tucker's research over the past 20 years, including details of some of his most interesting cases. His work provides persuasive evidence that some children do, in fact, possess memories of previous lives and we will look at how this phenomenon changes our understanding of consciousness and what it means to be human. Dr. Jim Tucker is a child psychiatrist at the University of Virginia, where he is the Bonner-Lowry Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences. He is the Director of UVA's Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS), and he is continuing the work of Ian Stevenson with children who report memories of previous lives
Near-Death Experiences: The BEST EVIDENCE Of Life After Death | Dr. Bruce Greyson Watch this interview at- https://youtu.be/NsbiB-Ipc3E?si=EXij3g2kdlIOea8A Dhru Purohit 441K subscribers 982,759 views Mar 4, 2021 We often think the mind is a creation of the brain, or that the mind and the brain are one and the same. But when the brain is offline for a number of reasons, like illness or injury, the mind can sometimes still be very active. Today on The Broken Brain Podcast, Dhru talks to Dr. Bruce Greyson about this phenomenon in the context of near-death experiences or NDEs. We have to remember that even just 20 years ago new scientific ideas were emerging that people thought were crazy. People are always skeptical of things they haven't been taught. Now, the study of near-death experiences is pushing the boundaries of modern research. Dr. Greyson is a Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the UVA School of Medicine. His award-winning research led him to become a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and to be invited by the Dalai Lama to participate in a dialogue between Western scientists and Buddhist monks in India. Dr. In this episode, Dr. Greyson shares some of the most dramatic first-person accounts of near-death experiences from his book After. Dhru and Dr. Greyson discuss how NDEs reveal a lot about dying and what might come after, but they also reveal just as much about life and living, about the value of compassion and our interconnectedness with one another, and about what makes a life meaningful and fulfilling. They also talk about how NDEs can help to transform the fear of dying that pervades our culture—into a healthy view of it as one more milestone in the course of our lives. In this episode, we dive into: - Dr. Greyson's first experience with a patient who had a near-death experience (4:32) - A near-death experience story from Dr. Greyson's book (15:51) - What near-death experiences tell us about the mind-body connection (19:37) - The parallels between psychedelic experiences and near-death experiences (29:06) - The misconceptions around near-death experiences (34:58) - How near-death experiences reduce the fear of death (39:08) - How to get the benefits of a near-death experience without actually having one (41:54) - The history of near-death experiences (46:51) - Reincarnation beliefs among near-death experiencers (49:22) - How near-death experiences change people's lives (1:01:45) For more on Dr. Greyson you can follow him on Instagram @BruceGreysonMD, on Facebook @BruceGreysonMD, on Twitter @BruceGreyson, and through his website https://www.brucegreyson.com. Fr. Nathan discusses Dr. Bruce Greyson's research work on near-death experiences. Dr. Greyson is the author of After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond. The book challenges our everyday ideas about our minds and our brains and offers key insights on how we can begin to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life.https://www.brucegreyson.comConnect with Father Nathan Castle, O.P.

Dr. Bruce Greyson is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia and author of several books on near-death experiences (NDEs).In this podcast, we look into themes commonly present during NDEs, such as: faster and clearer thinking a diminished sense of time overwhelming feelings of peace, wellbeing and joy awareness of cosmic unity new sounds & colors, and visions of the future that often come to pass. These phenomena lead to a deconstruction of the concept that the brain and mind are inexplicably linked. An NDE slows the brain, while the mind processes clearer than ever. If the brain can stop but the mind keeps going, what does this indicate about the nature of consciousness?
☀️ Kim Penberthy is a Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia Division of Perceptual Studies. This week's show is with Dr. Bruce Greyson. Dr. Bruce Greyson is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He was a co-founder and President of the International Association for Near-Death Studies, and Editor of the Journal of Near-Death Studies. Dr. Greyson has published more than a hundred scholarly articles about near-death experiences in peer-reviewed medical journals and three academic books. He has addressed more than a hundred national and international professional conferences. His research for the past four decades has focused on near-death experiences and particularly their after-effects and implications. His book, After: A Doctor Explores What Near- Death Experiences Reveal about Life and Beyond, is his first trade book bringing his scientific research to a popular audience. In this conversation, Dr. Greyson and I explored what NDEs teach us about life. We talked about experiences people have, the research that shows what might be creating these experiences, and what happens to people afterwards. We explore why understanding NDE could benefit us all. I'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below. What you'll learn from this episode: The evidence on NDE shows that what takes place can't solely be explained by a shutting down of the brain - as Bruce said, it's really a combination of that and something else that shows that consciousness isn't created in the brain Bruce said that the thing he hears over and over from people who have had NDE is that they say they now understand why there's The Golden Rule in all religions: "Do unto others and you would have done unto you", it's because whatever we do to others, we do to ourselves because we're ultimately all one We don't have to have a NDE personally in order to benefit from them, simply learning about NDE and what they suggest about our universe, can in itself bring a deeper sense of peace and security Resources and stuff that we spoke about Dr. Bruce Greyson Official Website Dr. Bruce Greyson Book: After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond Links to published resources: Dr. Greyson's published articles on NDEs The Handbook of Near-Death Experiences: Thirty Years of Investigation The Journal of Near-Death Studies Thank you for listening! Today we welcome Dr. Jim Tucker who is a child psychiatrist and the Bonner-Lowry Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. He is Director of the UVA Division of Perceptual Studies, where he is continuing the work of Dr. Ian Stevenson on reincarnation. He has been invited to speak about his research on Good Morning America, Larry King Live, and CBS Sunday Morning. He recently published BEFORE: Children's Memories of Previous Lives, a 2-in-1 edition of his previous books. In this episode, I talk to Dr. Jim Tucker about the science of reincarnation. We delve into his research findings and methodology on children who claim to remember their previous lives. Dr. Tucker notes that these children don't just recall biographical details of their past, but they also retain feelings and emotions. His findings have important implications for how we understand consciousness. We also touch on the topics of mortality, trauma, quantum physics, and panpsychism. About the Book- Life After Life: The Bestselling Original Investigation That Revealed "Near-Death Experiences" by Raymond Moody The groundbreaking, bestselling classic, now available in a special fortieth-anniversary edition that includes a new Foreword from Eben Alexander, M.D., author of Proof of Heaven, and a new Afterword by the author. Raymond Moody is the “father” of the modern NDE (Near Death Experience) movement, and his pioneering work Life After Life transformed the world, revolutionizing the way we think about death and what lies beyond. Originally published in 1975, it is the groundbreaking study of one hundred people who experienced “clinical death” and were revived, and who tell, in their own words, what lies beyond death. A smash bestseller that has sold more than thirteen million copies around the globe, Life After Life introduced us to concepts—including the bright light, the tunnel, the presence of loved ones waiting on the other side—that have become cultural memes today, and paved the way for modern bestsellers by Eben Alexander, Todd Burpo, Mary Neal, and Betty Eadie that have shaped countless readers notions about the end life and the meaning of death.

Listen to Dr. Bruce Greyson, one of the world's leading medical experts of NDEs and Professor Emeritus Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia, in conversation with Prof. Hitendra Wadhwa, exclusively on Intersections. His research over nearly half a century has reported remarkable consistencies across NDE accounts and accuracy of events that unfolded while these individuals were unconscious, leading to the publication of his latest book, After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond.
Is it possible for our consciousness to survive physical death? On this episode, I speak with Dr. Jim Tucker, MD, who is a Psychiatrist and a Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia, and is the director of the UVA Division of Perceptual Studies, as he discusses his work with children who report memories of previous lives. He is the author of Life before LIfe, and NY Times Bestseller, Return to Life. And as we discuss his work evaluating the evidence, we can't help but also wonder- What happens after death? Could there be the survival of the soul after death? Join us in this fascinating conversation, as we discuss reincarnation. You can find Dr. Tucker at jimbtucker.com.
Hey everybody... it's Pete. I have a distant aunt who used to tell me of all the times she almost died. A sample: she was once bit by a black widow spider. The spider was indeed black but examining it on the heel of her shoe there was no way to determine if it had been married. She swore it nearly did her in. Nearly attacked by a bear while camping. Though the bear was never actually seen, there was some evidence that her cooler had been pilfered. Almost fell into an icy river while rafting and could have drowned, she'd tell us. I think there was an asteroid in the mix at one point. She called these her near-death experiences, and given the frequency of them over her life you'd think some element of the cosmos might have been trying to collect a debt. But no, in fact she passed peacefully in her sleep, surviving the onslaught of perils through which she lived. In fact, none of these were near-death experiences, no matter how close she might have come to dying. I know this now because our guest today is one of the world's leading experts on the science and significance of the Near-Death Experience. Bruce Greyson, M.D., is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia and joins us to share his work studying these things and the people who have experienced them over nearly five decades. What sets Dr. Greyson's work apart from the rigorous empirical research of my long lost aunt is that his subjects actually died. In some way, shape, or form, they stopped functioning physiologically, had an experience, and came back later. The stories you'll hear in today's show serve as a tour through the incredible similarities in those experiences and the work of Dr. Greyson and his team to understand them. If you'd like to learn more, we encourage you to pick up his book, After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond. Bruce Greyson is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He was the immediate successor to the Carlsson Chair after the legendary Ian Stevenson, who founded the Department of Perceptual Studies in the University of Virginia in 1967. Ian is famous for his meticulous studies of children who remember previous lives but he also researched near-death experiences in India. Bruce was a co-founder and President of the International Association for Near-Death Studies and Editor of the Journal of Near-Death Studies for many years and author of The Handbook of Near-Death Studies.Bruce's research for the past four decades has focused on near-death experiences and particularly their after-effects and implications. He established the standard and widely used Greyson Scale on NDEs. His academic work has been translated into twenty languages and used in hundreds of studies worldwide. He has published more than a hundred scholarly articles about near-death experiences and gives regular addresses at international conferences on the matter. After is Bruce's first book to bring his ground-breaking research to general readers and has been widely reviewed. He will be a keynote speaker at the 2021 Beyond the Brain conference in November and is speaking on his book at a meeting on Friday April 23rd 2021.
