I share with you my recent experience of having Covid and the mindbody medicine informed methods I used to help me decrease fear and recover without lingering symptoms. I share other recovery stories and first person information about people who have recovered from lingering symptoms colloquially known as "long covid". I hope that my process is helpful for you. If you would like to chat with me - here's a link to book a free Curiosity Call - https://calendly.com/paincoachdeb RESOURCES What different people across the mindbody medicine field are discovering are the similarities between Covid symptoms and other long term chronic pain/illness symptoms and how the pain-fear-pain cycle plays into the perpetuation of symptoms after the body has recovered. So using this same approach they're seeing good responses. Here's some resources that I've both listened to or read directly or have been told about through my colleagues.https://www.positivelycovid.org/https://www.longcovidcured.com/ - this has some great recovery stories - including Paul Garner, infectious disease Dr. https://www.longcovidcured.com/about - this is a lovely list of various resources. In this episode I share how my clients' evocative metaphor work included imagery around floating and water which led me to remember the work of Dr. Claire Weekes and her book, Hope and Help for Your Nerves Hardcover – January 1, 1969.When we are using a mindbody approach to healing it can feel kind of exhausting to remember and use all these tools, and especially if we are in a panic to not feel uncomfortable stuff. So learning to surrender, to float, is a very powerful message to our nervous system that there is no THREAT. It's not the same kind of dorsal freeze of a small animal pretending to be dead, no, it's the conscious releasing of tension using visualization and self trust which evokes the felt sense of safety, of OKness. Here's some links to articles about her approach to anxiety - https://www.anxietycoach.com/claire-weekes.html https://www.tmswiki.org/ppd/Overcome_Anxiety_with_Dr._Claire_Weekes As you listen, remember it's not about knowing this stuff intellectually but being willing to play and practice these experiences in your body. Just like reading about weight lifting isn't the same as visualizing yourself lifting or actual weight lifting. Today's podcast I'm reflecting on conversations I've had with clients and myself about noticing shame and finding our way to the other side. I'm calling this a practice of Catch + Release Shame. Learning how to lean into what we usually avoid is the beginning of changing everything. When I asked my client for permission to share some of our conversation on the podcast, this was her response: "Specifically, if you'd like more client perspective when you share: "your client" found that there was hidden shame, like in the "little" things they would not have guessed would have shame around them. This is because they consider themselves very open and shame-free when it comes to the things that society is so often shaming people for (gender, body size/hair, kinks, etc.) so they assumed there was no shame. Nope. They were blind to the little shames and grateful you pointed them out so they could explore the why's and work to release them, thus allowing enjoyment to fill that space, instead. I hope our "discoveries" help others

This week I share with you two experiences of mine around a stress response called a Dorsal Freeze. It's been my belief and experience that when we understand our nervous system and the relationship to our physiology, healing can occur. We have one mind, one body and one nervous system -- we are one being that moves through the world - assessing sensory experiences for our own survival. When we take the path towards embodied understanding our whole body responds and we can create the lives we want to live (even while there's systems in the world we want to change). Episode 37 of Move With Deb, the Podcast is all about my inadvertent discovery of my own cognitive-somatic neuro-rewiring. Or as I sometimes lovingly think about it as training my dog of a mindbody. Or even simpler, I am untriggering myself. Language can be so imprecise in these moments and can be our greatest ally and tool. I hope you enjoy this episode and try applying some of the skills in your own life. Ok y'all. I know you love to listen to me talk about my mindbody practice but like I could just be doing it and keeping it to myself. This podcast is for you to begin to make connections and learn to practice and apply these skills in your life. So I created a short snack sized skills podcast version of the Somatic Smile activity for you to take with you and practice. I'm going to get into this in next week's podcast but hey be willing to fail or not be good at this. Failing creates focus which primes us for learning. :)

Welcome to Episode 35. I wanted to continue the conversation I started last week about Fear language in Trauma healing. But also what if there is danger? What if the systems we need to engage in for our lives to be operating with ease are rife with racism, sexism, fat phobia, trans phobia and so on? How can we use these tools and other ones in a skillful way for our highest benefit? This episode has a funny blooper in it. Can you find it? Besides that, I want you to know that I believe your pain is real. And just because we are discovering new ways to reprocess your pain, it doesn't mean it's your fault for having it in the first place. Your body does what it does. Pain is a part of our protection system. I go through how the brain learns how to evaluate a sensory experience and I've got 3 interesting links to share. And then I go on a little impassioned plea inspired by a conversation with a friend. Hello to my lovely super somaticizers of stress. I love you. I am you. So this episode I talk about my getting a rule out for throat cancer, because I've been dealing with this annoying, scary neck pain for over a year. It comes and goes. It's definitely linked to stress. And there was always a fear in the back of my mind that it was something more. Because I had gotten rid of all my other mindbody pain through these techniques but this one has hung around. So I talk about the importance of a "rule out". And also I share an article about the power of perception - https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/eight_reasons_to_distrust_your_own_perceptions Please feel free to reach out to me via instagram @movewithdeb or book a curiosity call at https://calendly.com/paincoachdeb My website is www.debmalkin.com

Dr. Sarno taught that unprocessed emotions, particularly anger and rage were responsible for chronic pain, back pain. Now with Trauma informed care and Polyvagal Theory the conversation has shifted to safety and fear. Underlying it all is this concept of Emotional Awareness. And more important (in my opinion) creating safety with Emotional Experiencing. There's research that shows, the more granular one is in being able to describe their emotions, the better sense of well-being one has. In this episode I discuss the reasons why we want to do this practice and the simple skill of the cognitive-somatic tool I call "I Notice." This podcast is very very late, because my perfectionist brain hijacked my body. The best news was although it was still happening, I knew WHAT was happening and so I had no feear. It was an invitation, as always, to feel. I invite you to slow down. To start to make room for the subconscious thoughts running roughshod in your mindbody. When we don't make space for feeling, we need the system to protect us and it does just that, by using it's only tools, sensations, physiological experiences. As the saying goes, you got to feel it to heal it. (wish I had actually said that on the podcast). I'm back at the gym lifting weights and discussing how talking to our brains are like or unlike the Star Trek spaceship viewscreens. I discuss Frequency illusion, also known as the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon, which is a cognitive bias in which, after noticing something for the first time, there is a tendency to notice it more often, leading someone to believe that it has a high frequency (a form of selection bias). This is why it's really helpful to learn how to talk to your brain and fill up your viewscreen.

This week's episode I explore the sensations in my body when I feel the perfectionist urge arise. I'm getting really good at decoding my body talk. I used to think I needed to do everything perfectly. I was raised by a perfectionist, who not so fun for me really did excel at so many things. Me, much less so. But I absorbed so many of those messages. My all or nothing brain is slowly and deliberately rebuilding my faith, love and compassion for my completely perfectly imperfect self and finding lots of healing along the way.
