How do you develop such expertise that you are able to perform at so high level under so many obstacles and pressures as Sebastian Vettel did in the 2012 Brazil GP? Sebastian was leading the championship 13 points ahead of Alonso before the race. In the first lap, Sebastian collided with Bruno Senna and spun, whilst Alonso made his way up in the pack, looking like the title favourite then at the wet conditions. Sebastian seemed to do all the right things after the disastrous start. How is this possible? How is one able to "do the right thing" in chaotic and complex situations? Why deliberate experience is better for developing expertise than deliberate practice? In this episode I got the chance to talk with a long-standing colleague, great coach and academic, Dr. Neil Buchanan. We discussed most of the time about expertise - what it is and how to develop it, and brought about some practical examples from the corporate and sport world - including Sebastians´ race in 2012. We swim through our thoughts like a fish swims through water. We don't even notice that the way we think colors our view of the world. Or sometimes we do notice thoughts that we don't like, and then we don't know what to do with them. You're going to learn how to look at your thoughts instead of through them. This is called Cognitive Defusion.

This month on TITW, Molly teaches Liza and our listeners concepts from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), another "third wave" cognitive behavioral treatment that both overlaps with and differs from DBT. Molly has been practicing ACT at her therapy practice, and Liza... needs to brush up on her skills! First, Molly walks us through the six core processes of ACT, including "Cognitive Defusion," which is the process of watching thoughts come and go rather than getting caught up or buying into them. In some ways, this episode is a deep dive on the "Mindfulness of Current Thoughts" skill from the DBT Distress Tolerance module. We discuss how most humans experience unwanted automatic thoughts, and how we those of us with "stickier" brains can benefit from relating differently to such thoughts. In this episode, we're going to do something different. Instead of me interviewing someone, I'm going to share a simple yet powerful technique that will help you whether you're someone living with pain or a practitioner who treats people. This exercise is called Dropping an Anchor. It's typically one of the very first techniques that I teach patients who suffer from pain or pain catastrophizing, having problems with difficult emotions, emotion dysregulation, anxiety or any challenge that's coming up in the therapy room. Before we begin, we probably should revisit the term pain catastrophizing and review and identify what that means. Pain catastrophizing is the tendency to magnify the threat value of pain, feel helpless in a context of pain or the inability to inhibit pain-related thoughts in anticipation of a painful encounter. The last part, the inability to inhibit pain-related thoughts in anticipation of a painful encounter, is what I would like you to think about as we go into this episode. Think about someone who has chronic pain. Each time they come into your clinic, each time they come into the therapy room with you, they are in some way in anticipation that there may be some pain during that session. We're going to talk about pain. I may be moving or moving your arm. You may be experiencing pain. It's a lot of pain-related thoughts that are happening in anticipation of a treatment session. That's why we're going to go through this Dropping an Anchor exercise. If you've taken my ACT for Chronic Pain Course or my Mindfulness-Based Pain Relief Certification, you'll be able to identify that this type of exercise fits squarely in the psychological process of contacting the present moment. You'll also be able to identify some degree of cognitive defusion. Cognitive defusion is the idea of distancing or separating from thoughts. You'll definitely see aspects of both of those during this exercise. There are lots of different ways you can drop an anchor. You can drop an anchor by focusing on your breath, by stretching, focusing on the rise and fall of the diaphragm, looking around the room and fixating on a point or listening to sounds in the room. You're going to hear all of those flavors now because I'm going to share a session that I had with a client that I worked with virtually. This whole encounter here that I'm going to share with you with my client, Barbara, I have her permission to share this. At the end of that exercise, I gave Barbara a while to debrief so we can talk through what she noticed and experienced during the activity. Probably the most common mistake I see both therapists, as well as patients, make with this type of exercise is they attempt to use it as a control or a distraction technique. Control and distraction techniques are very opposite of what happens in mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches to pain. Mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches involve helping you turn toward what's in the present moment with an openness and a curiosity and not necessarily to distract, eliminate, control or avoid what's present. I invite you to participate and play patient. If you're at home, find a comfortable chair to sit in. Any chair will do. You can do this as an eyes-open or eyes-closed exercise. It doesn't matter. I personally enjoy eyes-closed exercises like most people do with regard to cognitive and mindfulness exercises like this. If you're seated, all you have to do is place your palms down on your lap, relax your arms at your sides and gently begin to close your eyes. Let's get ready. I invite you to drop an anchor with us. Ooooommmm... Det med meditation kan godt lyde meget fjernt og langhåret. Men det er det faktisk ikke. Du har måske endda prøvet at være i en form for meditativ tilstand uden at vide det. I dagens afsnit kommer jeg, Cleoh Søndergaard, ind på meditation, defusion, mindfulness og grounding. Du får viden om forskellene på disse begreber og får øvelser og en guidet meditation til at øve din nærværs-praksis derhjemme. Øvelser: - Biografen - Fisken Guidet meditation: Øvelse i at observere sindet og at acceptere og give slip på tanker. Meditationen er en drømmerejse og er meget brugbar, hvis du er ny i at meditere, da der er meget visualisering. Husk: Hav tillid til at det, du vil opleve kommer til dig. Prøv ikke at hænge for meget i detaljer, om du ser det 'godt nok', men vær i stedet med det, der er. Rigtig god fornøjelse! Som noget nyt opfordrer vi til at du som lytter skriver ind. Welcome to the sixth episode in our series on Psychological Flexibility in the workplace. In this episode, Richard and Pilar discuss the various ways we can experience psychological discomfort (boredom, frustration or uncertainty, for example), how it can distract us and grab our attention and what we can do instead.  We discuss the role of Acceptance - the acceptance of discomfort while we take helpful action, rather than a passive acceptance of the status quo.  Reflecting on our episode on Defusion and the nature of our thoughts, Pilar had this to say: "The important thing is not to get stuck in them. Not to let them play in our minds so often that we lose touch with who we are now, with who lives in the present. Let the thoughts emerge, but then let them fly away. Notice they are there, and say goodbye to them if they’re not helping, but welcome them if they are trying to tell you how you can confront a challenge in a different way today. Embrace them if they show you a recurring pattern that you want to break. Listen to them if they are telling you something now you didn’t know before."
