There's so much for you here to experience, to be, to do, and to have. The reason we don't is because of what we're thinking. And those thoughts we're thinking, keeping us playing so so small, are what we refer to as “limiting beliefs.” A few examples of limiting beliefs: “I'm too old.” “I'm too young.” “I'm not educated enough.” “I'm not pretty enough.” “I'm not smart enough.” “I can't because ________________.” “I'm wrong.” “The economy's too bad for me to be successful.” “No one hears me.” (and so many more) Our thoughts create our feelings. Our feelings create our actions. And our actions create our life. Therefore, it only stands to reason that our thoughts create our life. The problem is that 95% of our thoughts (including our limiting beliefs) live in the unconscious mind. That means they're running the show and we don't even know they're there. It's time to bring those suckers out into the light and boot their a** to the curb. Bagwork™ baby!! In this Crushing Doubt interview, Adriana Bucci joins me to discuss her growing expertise as a life coach, helping her clients get free from toxic relationships, with a particular focus on narcissism. She and I cover a lot of ground, noting the similarities between the gaslighting and confusion that narcissists render in a very similar manner to which doubt works in symptoms. We talked about the importance of absolute certainty that is needed to stay clear on what is happening, not fall prey to fear, and be able to keep the right boundaries for yourself to not be harmed by such people (or by doubt!). We talked about the importance of absolute certainty that is needed to stay clear on what is happening, not fall prey to fear, and be able to keep the right boundaries for yourself to not be harmed by such people (or by doubt!). This interview can help you to recognize the signs of a narcissist and it is important to note that they do not usually start off toxic, but, on the contrary, quite charming and beginning a cycle that leaves their victims confused and afraid so that they can keep getting narcissistic supplies from you in your suffering. She outlines the cycle of love bomb, devalue, discard, and repeat that leads to people falling into these cycles with them and we both note the tremendous suffering that comes from such abusive behavior. One other important fact to note is our conviction that you must see that they know exactly what they are doing when they perpetrate these abuses, so that you don't feel guilty about getting them out of your life.
In this testimonial, Marc R. shares how he was able to get better from his latest mind body suffering using the Crushing Doubt Podcast, alone. Marc has recognized his mind body experience many times over and is even a veteran of Sarno reading and book cures, which makes it all the more honor that he sees the added value in my system. As he discusses here, what he can often find missing in the rest of the mind body literature is an organized way to understand what is happening. Perhaps it isn't a surprise that a long time veteran of the Air Force — with the military's penchant for precision and organization — took so well to my system. But Marc also showcases many of those great qualities that can also lead us into some difficult places. His goodist tendencies, his empathy, his intelligence, and more had left him with too much information and not enough information, as I often say. Marc also makes the crucial point that he did not get my system right away. He had to work it through, keep asking questions, and give himself time. But I am extremely gratified to see that he was able to use it to conquer his latest symptom which had taken hold with a stronger level of doubt than previous ones. I am grateful to him for sharing his success story so generously highlighting my work in such a positive light. If you aren't making the breakthrough the way Marc did, fear not! There are many ways to get the system to click. Just keep asking your questions and get them answered to your full satisfaction.

Today's interview features Dr. Liz Croton, a general practitioner in the United Kingdom, who has caught on to mind body treatment and incorporated it in her work. Liz has practiced as a GP for fifteen years, but it is only in the last 6 years that she has folded mind body experience into her work, after learning about it with our Crushing Doubt friend, Georgie Oldfield. Given the short amount of time any GP has with their patients — Liz notes that she usually only gets ten minutes with each — it becomes all the more imperative that doctors understand how to assess what is going on for people from an emotional angle, particularly if we are going to stand a chance at getting people diagnosed correctly and set on a course for the right treatment. Dr. Croton is a fine example of what can happen in our society when a good practitioner continues to think scientifically and logically and even change their whole practice if required to do good work. She notes that it often felt scary to make such changes because it ran counter to so many of her colleagues, but she expresses being glad she did it and optimistic that it is helping those with whom she works.

In this Crushing Doubt interview, I got to sit down with Dr. Mark Lumley, the chief research partner in Dr. Howard Schubiner's research on pain and the various practices to use to retrain the brain to get rid of it. Mark and I talk about how important it is to the scientific and logical endeavors of chronic pain and other mind body suffering that we can show just what is going on and what it actually means for treatment. Mark and I also discuss the importance of disclosure for patients, both in their ability to entrust us with what is going on for them emotionally, but with respect to their ability to trust the genuineness of the treatment provider. I express appreciation for the research happening out there, as I note that not everyone is as drawn to this area of the work, despite how important it is. In fact, as we explored what got Mark into the mind body field, he shares a story of the first time he came to be aware of his own mind body process and how far it went. I marvel with him about the scientific mind he had even back at nine years old and how he continues to apply these skills in ways that benefit the entire mind body community and the sufferers who so badly need our help.

In this interview, we hear the fascinating story of a mind body recovery related to the circulatory system, as Irralee was able to use Wim Hof's cold water immersion techniques and breathing exercises to stop a decades long experience of cold hands and other symptoms associated with the condition. The fact that she was able to change her thinking about the cold in such a way that changed her physiology is another strong piece of evidence for mind body experience and the incredible power of changing our mindsets. Irralee's story is all the more compelling because of how much she hated the cold and how miserable it always made her. She took her personal experience changing her symptoms and found her way to SIRPA training with Crushing Doubt friend, Georgie Oldfield, in England and now helps others recover from their mind body symptoms. As we continue to gather personal and professional stories of recovery — especially from such a wide variety of symptoms — the evidence becomes stronger and stronger, which should help our community have less and less doubt.

Today begins the first of my four session consultation series with Diane, who is already known in our Crushing Doubt community for her kind words and wisdom, as she responds to comments and encourages others in their healing, as well as sharing about her own. Diane has suffered from migraines, sciatica, and numerous other symptoms, on top of having had to deal with an autoimmune issue that led to a liver transplant — all for helping a sick fellow passenger on a plane. This four session consultation shows how each person can fill out their individual columns on their mind body map so that they can understand the role of emotions, doubt, and power in their chronic pain or symptoms, as well some specific action steps the sufferer can take to create their own program to get better, using my overarching system. I was so appreciative that Diane showed the bravery and openness to engage in the actual process with me so that we can bring to all of you a direct view of how the work goes and what it looks like. In this first session, I orient her to the mind body map work and we began to develop her emotional themes, so that she can recognize the broad, high stakes, but specific experiences and feelings that can lead to the onset and uptick in symptoms. Among the themes we hit upon were the toxicity of one of her family members, feeling dismissed and under appreciated in her family, and feeling unworthy and not measuring up. We talked about how she will feel so much better and with significantly more hope once she understands the mind body experience and how it works inside and out. This is the first of four meetings with Diane, which will allow you to see the full mind body mapping process, how it works, and why. She and I will continue to get her emotional themes articulated, polished, and honed, until she is able to understand each symptom onset or uptick through this lens, giving her the tools to disable the mind body pain process from these acute moments of suffering. I look forward to carrying this process forward with her and hope it is of value to you all to see how the process works!

I'm thrilled to be joined on Crushing Doubt with Dr. Drew Pinsky, the famed doctor and addictions specialist known for his shows, Loveline, Celebrity Rehab, and the Adam and Dr. Drew Show. But there is so much more people don't know about him that makes him stand out. He is an author, a deeply empathic person, and an exceptional critical thinker. Dr. Drew and I explore our understanding of some of the key problems of the day — from chronic pain to addictions to the homelessness situation in America — and I have rarely found someone with whom I have such a similar take. I even found a co-hater of Descartes and post modernism — two philosophical lines that have led to profound misunderstandings and a denigration of truth and objective reality. I also got to hear about his new book with his daughter, Paulina, working to challenge the notion that talking about sex has to be awkward. Along these lines, he and I agree that we have many assumptions to challenge to bring real change to o ur country and the world and we both will keep working to shine a light on the real causes and solutions we face, including my realm of chronic pain and symptoms relief. All is of his ventures and links to his efforts can be found on drdrew.com

In my second interview with Dr. Arlene Feinblatt, I focused on learning about the collaborative relationship between Dr. Sarno and her. It was a pleasure to get to hear directly from someone who knew Dr. Sarno so well about his attributes and how his personality contributed to the success of this duo. Arlene acknowledges how she and Sarno had to band together to keep getting through the criticisms lobbed their way as they tried to make progress. We talked about the importance of a particular characteristic in the beloved doctor with which all at Crushing Doubt should be able to identify: certainty. On top of that, Arlene notes that being able to accept anger and rage as an emotion is key to recovery, especially if we can focus on deciding what to do with it, rather than getting stuck on judging it. I noted with Arlene one of the key variables she brought to the table in helping people as well in the form of her curiosity and capacity to keep asking questions. Overall, we talked about the baseline idea of getting the patient to think emotionally, which then builds on itself. The information begins to do the work all by itself and we talk about why a short term therapy that is more active really helps in this process.
In this testimonial of healing, I got to sit down with Kimba, who completed my last seminar and got significant relief and reason for tremendous hope for ongoing gains. She came to me with agonizing stiffness and pain in her back, glutes, and legs and having done a good amount of mind body work previously. As she highlights, she was able to get a sense of relief from the endless search for more information and to gain confidence in an approach that made full sense to her and laid out an ongoing process in which she could thrive. On top of it all, Kimba got direct proof of getting better during the seminar meetings, as her back locked up when she stood up during day seven and we connected it to the fear she had of the seminar ending and worrying that she would not get all better from it. What she found, through the confidence of this experience and the information in the seminars is that she felt, in her words, 80% better when we finished. She was 50% better this day we talked because, as we predicted doubt is trying to fight it's way back in. But Kimba is onto it and I am grateful to her for sharing the gains she has made this far. The work continues, but this is a helpful indication that the right information, organized in the right system really does get people better!

Pat is a chronic pain sufferer who discovered the Crushing Doubt channel and my system over the last year. She had been struggling with sciatica and fibromyalgia, among other symptoms. After searching through many mind body programs and ways of thinking about things, she gravitated towards my work, as she put it, because it was logical, organized, and finally made sense of what she was seeing and experiencing in her own body. Over the last two weeks, she took my eight session seminar and says now that she has taken another several leaps forward, including a sense of real emotional peace. This is the work that we do in this community — you don't only get the chronic symptoms to abate, but you learn about what makes you who your are, and about how to get peace with yourself that hadn't previously been possible. Pat shares many aspects of her experience in this interview, which even I found to be inspiring. It's very exciting to see such progress in a short amount of time, particularly when we can have confidence it will now last, because we understand how the symptoms have been behaving and why. Understanding it all is the key and my system can help put to rest the constant sifting through too much and too little information all at the same time. Take it from Pat!

Barb and I met for the final session of four consultation meetings, this time focusing on action steps within the emotions, doubt, and power columns. One of the main advantages of three column work is how much more specifically it identifies what is going on for each person and how their symptoms profile. Barb and I recognized that a big part of what can now help her to feel better is to use power to crush doubt. By recognizing when she is out of power — with herself, her symptom, or others — she can now challenge some ways in which she can make more powerful choices and align with her true self. As always, I am so impressed by, and grateful to, the people who share their stories on Crushing Doubt and with our community. I know we all wish Barb well in her recovery and I am pleased to see it heading in the right direction so well.

Dan is joined by four time NBA Champion John Salley to discuss his take on health and wellness. John is a vegan activist and he and Dan connected on the idea that we are very influenced by what we feed ourselves — the actual food, in John's case, and the ideas we have about ourself and the world in Dan's case. John shares how he got his viewpoints, including a look at his NBA days, learning from Adrian Dantley, whom he called ‘the teacher' — a name I paired by Dantley showing John everything he needed to know about how to take care of his body and mind in the NBA. We also talked about his being an observer and this leading to his being able to make an impact on people through his understanding. Dan and John also bond over people with emotional struggles gravitating towards them both, as they understand that a different way of thinking isn't necessarily a bad thing. We discuss how following your dreams leads to some of the biggest breakthroughs as well. John's successes in life come from his many gifts — including his empathy and comedic instincts — an it was a pleasure to have him on Crushing Doubt to talk about mental health and what we need to do to better address it.
Dr Dan Ratner is a Pain Psychologist based in Cleveland, Ohio. Along with one-to-one clients he also feels passionate about expanding the research/ awareness about the Mind-body approach to chronic pain and has his own podcast called “Crushing Doubt”. Having had his own debilitating back pain for years, he is very knowledgeable on this subject both personally and professionally! In this episode Dan talks to me about his approach to chronic pain which includes looking at the themes of Emotions; Doubt and Power . These themes which represent his column approach evolved from constantly asking questions and seeking answers for his patients. It was a brilliant conversation with lots of nuggets for all!

On my latest Crushing Doubt interview, I had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with Fran Sommer Anderson, one of Dr. Sarno and Arlene Feinblatt's early trainees in treating mind body issues. Fran shares much in common with so many of the mind body practitioners out there — warm, unassuming, modest, kind, and a goodist through and through. But, as is always the case in these interviews, I got to experience some aspects of the particular person that surprised (in a good way!) and enlightened me. We cover Fran's own struggle with chronic headaches and I was surprised to find that, despite having gotten much better overall, she still had them fairly intensely at various points throughout a lot of her work helping other people with these issues. We discussed her discovery of somatic experiencing — a therapeutic intervention that helps people locate and process feelings through their bodily experience — and how this has informed and changed her practice. Fran and I didn't get as much time as I would have liked on her and Eric Sherman's book, Pathway to Pain Relief, but it is a must read for any practitioners out there who want to work with mind body issues. I very much hope to have Fran on again and I can see why so many have gotten such relief from working with her, given her calm, knowledgeable, and skillful way of being present with people and helping them discover their truths.

Today, on Crushing Doubt, I have the pleasure of sitting down with actor Real Andrews, one of the stars of General Hospital, to discuss his passionate support of mental health awareness and open discussion of the issues we all face. Real shares his harrowing story of not being aware of so much of his emotional pain, leading him to engage in all sorts of efforts to make himself feel better that only led to more pain and suffering for him. Real and I also discussed his hip pain and considered how he might think of it from a mind body perspective. He describes how he used drinking to avoid his feelings and pain and notes how his recent years of sobriety have brought him to significant clarity on how he was living his life, whether he really liked who he was, and so much more. We also discuss suicidal ideation and just how many lives could be saved if people could talk about this more openly, be there for each other, and understand what a normal part of life this can be for so many. Real brings his authentic self to the whole interview, including his sadness over the loss of an actor friend three years ago and his wish to have been able to know his pain and stop it. We share a passion for the importance of every life and I know how pain can cripple and ruin lives, which is why I want to spread the word on how, when we have the right information, we can stop pain from taking over and ruining lives. In fact, we decided to have him on for a four session consultation to see how I can be of help and will have that out to you soon.
On this episode of Crushing Doubt, I sat down to interview UK psychotherapist, Carole Randell, another mind body clinician who discovered a way to defeat her chronic fatigue syndrome through the work of Dr. Sarno. As with so many of these interviews of my colleagues in the field, this discussion allowed me to keep learning how other mind body practitioners work, but also to continue to build a closer community of peers to compare ideas and, as a result, help pain sufferers everywhere. Carole talked about how she worked to adjust every aspect of her life to change old, unhappy patterns, and one of the most important aspects of the work about which we agreed — in spades! — was just how much people can change in a moment to moment way, whether we are speaking of mind body issues or even the setup of our mental health and our relationship with ourselves. We discussed the importance of the sufferer coming to feel that their bodies are communicating with them and noted together how people who are recovered from their pain come to feel that the message they received was more important than any other in their lives (much as it is hard to appreciate in the moment). Carole's focus, in the work that she does, also finds an echo in mine, in that she covers a brand spectrum of issues when thinking through what is going on for each person with whom she works. It was a pleasure to connect with her and get to highlight more aspects of the mind body work we are, thankfully, all coming to see grow in its influence in the world.

MD Dr. David Schechter and psychologist Dr. Justin Barker join Dr. Dan Ratner on Crushing Doubt to discuss their collaboration in mind body work, including their weekly groups helping people understand the role their minds play on their physiological experience. We talk about how crucial it is to have the fields of medicine and psychology in cooperation with each other in the effort to help as many sufferers out there as possible with these symptoms that bridge the gap between the two. We find commonalities in how these three work with people, particularly around the emphasis they put on the individual minds with which they are working and how we have to adapt to them. Other topics include the growing awareness of the importance of doubt in this work, the camaraderie of sufferers in groups and how this can be a healing factor, and working through the overwhelming amount of information on mind body issues that can feel confusing or contradictory to so many. David and Justin are doing great work in the field of mind body experience and finding Dan's framework a useful addition in understanding and Crushing Doubt as a resource for their patients. More collaborations are in order, as these two illustrate so well!

On this edition of Crushing Doubt's interview series, I got to sit down with Kent Bassett and Marion Cunningham, the directors and producers of the mind body film This Might Hurt, which features Dr. Howard Schubiner in his work with a particular group of pain sufferers. Kent and Marion put so much hard work and financial investment into this wonderful film, and I celebrated what an achievement this was and how many lives it can alter for the better. This Might Hurt was inspired by Kent's own mind body experience, in which he developed arm pain that crippled him to the point of having to drop out of Swarthmore College. It took a year before someone mentioned Dr. John Sarno's books to him and, like so many before him, he was shocked to achieve a book cure to his chronic pain. With his film career under way, as he states in the interview, he felt a strong need to tell the story, in some way, of how people can use new information to make changes to their physical experience. Marion got connected with Kent and has found a very powerful mind body journey of her own, which opened up her life in ways she hadn't expected either. Come find out how Kent and Marion made their choices in how to tell the story of the nine sufferers in this particular group of Dr. Schubiner's practice as it unfolded and their take on what they saw during those weeks of clinical work, from powerful emotional awakenings, changes in how to live, and the role of doubt in each of the sufferers. This interview captures both filmmakers' journeys in the process, but the three of us also put our heads together on how to reach more people with our collective message.

I was thrilled to have my first podcast guest, Witalij Martynow, return to Crushing Doubt. Even better, he has grown in leaps and bounds in his sense of power and is now expanding his growing breath work practice that is bringing expansion and happiness to many people. We talk about the concept of power that he learned with me and how he now opens doors for other people in a similar way, but with his own manifestation of it. Witalij explains how he developed a process of varied breathing patterns to bring about changes in mental states which can lead to big breakthroughs for people in their life journeys. Included in this, according to Witalij, people can lose their identities entirely — in a positive way! — for the time of the session and make all kinds of gains because of it. From the perspective of my work, it was a joy to see Witalij embodying so much of what he experienced with me, as we both share the viewpoint that helping others to feel powerful, free, and uniquely special is paramount. Witalij is an embodiment of what eradicating doubt and learning to trust your own power can do for you. From the time I met him until now, he was always a great person, but now he is living the life he wants in a more powerful way than that of which most get to dream.

In this interview, I am joined by Author, Podcast Host, and mind body expert, LCSW Nicole Sachs. Nicole's warmth, knowledge, confidence, skill, and expertise resonates with so many people nationwide and around the world and we were lucky enough to get some good time with her. She shares her own journey of healing and how she faced some uncomfortable truths within herself, ultimately leading to her developing Journalspeak -- her program of journaling to access painful, but important emotions. We also talk about another topic that comes up so frequently on Crushing Doubt — the experience of becoming more powerful after listening to the message of the body. Not only that, but she and I see eye to eye on doubt, even if she approaches it in her own way, as she recognizes the importance of giving pain sufferers absolute certainty when we know it is a mind body process. Increasingly, the mind body field needs these sorts of conversations to provide some sense of a unified stance on so many issues to make for a clearer path to recovery for people struggling to get better and it was my pleasure to link up with Nicole in this way. Come check out this interview to hear about Nicole and my shared idea that pain sufferers have to feel their mind body process as their real truth in order to get better.

On this week's Crushing Doubt interview, renowned mind body coach, Dan Buglio, joins me to share his journey through his symptoms and in working with others to get them free from them as well. As is often the case in mind body work, we find that we have similar ways of thinking about a lot of things with a different way to present that information. Dan's dedication to his clients and to sharing any helpful information he can is readily apparent and you can find his daily videos on his YouTube channel, Pain Free You. His wisdom comes from twelve years of ‘doing everything wrong', in his own words, in his recovery efforts. But with each step trying to find his way, he learned the ways he recommends to think about the mind body situation the right way. We connected on several ideas, such as how fear and attention represent two of the most major sources of mind body symptoms. We continued the discussion in looking at ways to move the field forward and get more people better help. Don't miss this meeting of the minds on how to collaborate in our field to reduce fear and build up maximum hope within the pain population. On this week's episode of Crushing Doubt, we explore the concept of certainty and how it can help you in relieving your pain and suffering. How does one achieve this? And does this mean we should have NO doubts? On the contrary, to get to certainty, you must let in any and all doubts that are there and, in addition, build trust with whomever you are working with and even with yourself. I also had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Galinksy, a documentary filmmaker, writer, and producer. Michael shared his own personal journey through mind body syndrome, including his going to see Dr. Sarno, himself, for help, in the 2016 documentary film, All the Rage. Michael and I discuss the importance of mind body thinking, the efforts to get more people to see and understand the concept, and the personal changes one can go through when finding a way to master the symptoms sufficiently. He and I also share a personal connection -- in addition to being men raised in families with therapists -- with respect to my own journey and the surprising role he ended up playing in it. The podcast closes as we begin to discuss action steps in more detail, this time looking at some of the most key action steps of the Emotions column. These include moment to moment thinking, recognizing that mind body issues always fit with the timing of the onset of new symptoms, and the fact that how your symptoms present will always, always, always make sense. The key is to figure out how. Easier said than done, but doable with my way of understanding it. Teasing out which mind body issues are emotionally related versus ones of thinking and doubt is crucial and we begin to dig into the nuts and bolts of that here. I also consider questions from the viewing and listening audience, doing everything I can to help patients resolve their doubt, understand their emotions, grow more personally powerful, and reduce or eradicate their symptoms.
On this week's episode of Crushing Doubt, we explore how doubt affects the decisions we make, including some of the biggest ones of our lives. I focus on the concept of groupthink, which is the term in psychology and pop culture for what happens when we can't maintain our own stance in the face of so many people thinking differently. This is a key factor in getting better from mind body issues, given that the vast majority of society does not understand it as I do, but we also touch on how it affects our career paths, who to marry, whether or not to have kids, and more. Doubt must be let in first, but then we must steer clear from becoming awash in it. My guest today is Dr. John Stracks, an Integrative Family Physician, Assistant Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago. John is also an advisor to Curable, one of the key apps involved with chronic pain, and he interviewed yours truly this past July for their podcast Hope For Healing, which you can find on Youtube if you search the title and my name. John is a very key ally in the field for me, as we see eye to eye on so many things, from how to treat a mind body issue all the way to how we need to tackle the systemic issues that threaten to hold back our progress. He and I voice our thoughts on how we can make our treatments more specific and effective in working with patients and our hopes to collaborate in the future. The podcast closes as we zoom (forgive the pandemic pun!) in on the doubt column and how to apply action steps to this arena. I focus on some of the key aspects of fighting doubt, including the paramount importance of rejecting any theories that rely on a high degree of randomness. We can do better and I will show you why we MUST! I also explore issues around the timing of symptoms and what it can reveal that can add to our certainty about a mind body symptom. Lastly, I turn my attention to some questions from our viewing and listening audience, as we explore Erik Erickson's developmental concepts as they relate to doubt and how it fits in with the name of our show, as well as the definition of trauma and how it relates to mind body living.
On this week's episode of Crushing Doubt, Julie and I explore doubt as it relates to raising kids and what we show them about their own ability to trust themselves and their perceptions. The doubts that arise in parents and children alike can be a powerful force and the awareness of these issues can help us make choices that honor who we are and who the children are telling us they are. I also had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. David Hanscom, a former orthopedic surgeon who discovered his own principles of mind body work the hard way -- through his own story of pain and recovery. We discuss his evolving understanding of the mind body process, with his particular focus on the mind body stress response and how it can be harnessed for relief. David and I had never gotten to meet before the interview and I think we were both pleased with how much common ground we found. I hope to collaborate with him in the future in advancing the field. Don't miss this discussion of cutting edge science and logic, as we debunk some of the most talked about structural theories of the body and how radical a shift can occur when the mind body process is understood, both physically and personally. The podcast closes as Julie and I discuss the ideas behind the action steps in my powerful and effective short term consultations. In relieving my own symptoms, I found many aspects of the mind body experience could be pinpointed in my understanding of them and, as such, that I could elucidate corresponding changes in behavior and thought that can lead to greater relief. The action steps are often new, potential ways of thinking, more so than actions, but these dynamic and striking changes in the mind change the physiology of the body. We will tie the action steps to the three columns of emotions, doubt, and power so that you can see how each column provides new information, an organized system to understand and deal with them, and reliable tenets that can allow you to become confident in managing your own mind body processes. I also consider questions from the viewing and listening audience, doing everything I can to help patients resolve their doubt, understand their emotions, grow more personally powerful, and reduce or eradicate their symptoms.
On this week's episode of Crushing Doubt, Julie and Dan explore doubt as it relates to raising kids and what we show them about their own ability to trust themselves and their perceptions. The doubts that arise in parents and children alike can be a powerful force and awareness of these issues can help us make choices that honor who we are. Dan interviews Byron Jackson, former NFL player, documentary filmmaker, and the founder of Sports Rhythms, an organization that is based on his principles of training young athletes to not only be good players, but good people. The two discuss Byron's focused athletic efforts, making it to the NFL, himself, and playing a large role in helping his younger brother, DeSean Jackson, not only make it to the NFL but thrive as a three time All Pro with the Philadelphia Eagles. This interview captures aspects of how adversity can foster values to propel people to become their most powerful selves. Check out the story of how Byron came to see life as he does and why he has devoted his life to making a positive impact on as many young people as he can. The podcast closes as Julie and Dan discuss the power Column in his treatment -- along with doubt, another major distinguishing factor between his work and that of many other mind body practitioners. The power column, at its essence, relates to how comfortable a relationship you have between what you wish could be true and what actually is and how to make the two better align to your wishes. This is true in your relationship to who you are, how powerful you feel in your relationships, and whether you feel you can control your symptoms or whether THEY control YOU. Dan also considers questions from the viewing and listening audience, as he does everything he can to help patients resolve their doubt, understand their emotions, grow more personally powerful, and reduce or eradicate their symptoms.
On the sixth episode of Crushing Doubt, Dan interviews Dr. Howard Schubiner, noted mind body medicine doctor outside of Detroit and author of Unlearn Your Pain and Hidden From View: A Clinician's Guide to Psychophysiologic Disorders. We talk about Howard's tremendous work in research as well, as he is a leading source in collecting new research and the comprehensive data of the past, on which we rely for so much of our scientific arguments for mind body experience as the dominant factor in so many aspects of physical health. We explore his ideas about neural pathways and how they continue to evolve as we understand the stress response all humans have, not just in our minds, but in our bodies. In the end, Howard and I agree on most mind body related things, but he recognizes one of the key motivations we all have, emotionally speaking. Check it out to find out what it is! Julie and Dan explore altruism and how some people can make you doubt nearly anything -- even the value you bring in being good to others -- and discuss the challenge of keeping your own compass so you can keep your good belief systems in place. The podcast closes as Julie and Dan discuss the crucial Doubt Column in his treatment -- one of the first major distinguishing factors between his work and that of many other mind body practitioners. We cover the three levels of doubt, how to articulate individual doubts, and how to use science and logic to quell them sufficiently for each specific mind. Dan also considers questions from the viewing and listening audience, as he does everything he can to help patients resolve their doubt, understand their emotions, grow more personally powerful, and reduce or eradicate their symptoms.

On the fifth episode of Crushing Doubt, Dan interviews one of his own patients, Katie Haller, who gave her permission to tell the story of her recovery from chronic knee pain. Dr. Ratner and Katie follow her journey from the onset of her symptoms, her visits to all sorts of practitioners in many fields, including traditional medicine, all the way through to her TMS treatment. She shares the striking and difficult story she endured, but Katie is a professional comedian, so she brings a great deal of humor to the situation as well. It's easier for her to laugh now that she has progressed so far in her pain relief. She still has symptoms flare up when something too large pops up in her emotional life, but the two continue to work these things through for her and help her grow stronger and more confident in her own abilities and safety with her symptoms. Julie and Dan also explore the ideal of individualism and how it can lead to a secret doubt in ourselves in the face of the expectations of society. The podcast closes as Julie and Dan discuss the nature of the Emotions Column in his treatment. We cover how to understand emotional life as it relates to the onset and timing of symptoms and how to ‘think emotionally', instead of feeling stuck in the physicality of the symptoms. Dan also considers questions from the viewing and listening audience, as he does everything he can to help patients resolve their doubt, understand their emotions, grow more personally powerful, and reduce or eradicate their symptoms.
