DUTCH MASTER—Dutch-born, California-raised designer Hans Teensma began his magazine career working alongside editor Terry McDonell at Outside magazine, which Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner launched in San Francisco in 1977.When Wenner sold Outside two years later, Teensma and McDonell headed to Denver to launch a new regional, Rocky Mountain Magazine, which would earn them the first of several ASME National Magazine Awards. On the move again, Teensma's next stop would be New England Monthly, another launch with another notable editor, Dan Okrent. The magazine was a huge hit, financially and critically, and won back-to-back ASME awards in 1986 and '87.Ready for a new challenge — and ready to call New England home — Teensma launched his own studio, Impress, in the tiny village of Williamsburg, Massachusetts. The studio has produced a wide range of projects, including startups and redesigns, as well as pursuing Teensma's passion for designing books.Since 1991, Teensma has been incredibly busy: He was part of a team that built a media empire for Disney, launching and producing Family Fun, Family PC, Wondertime, and Disney Magazine. He's designed dozens of books and redesigned almost as many magazines. And he continues to lead the creative vision of the critically-acclaimed nature journal, Orion. You might not know Teensma by name, but his network of deep friendships runs the gamut of media business royalty. Why? Because everybody loves Hans. When they designed the ideal temperament for survival in the magazine business, they might as well have used his DNA. He's survived a nearly 50-year career thanks to his wicked sense of humor, his deep well of decency, and above all, his unlimited reserves of grace. You're gonna love this guy. You ever have that friend/colleague you love to talk shop with? That's me and @larissa_parson She's a pelvic floor movement coach/teacher who in her words "I help you restore your core, without the shame, oppression, and misogyny that turns women's bodies into a problem." In this video we discuss her own insights as a movement teacher as well as a person with a body that has reoccurring pain. We discuss the impacts of language on the nervous system and why the format of the program was perfect for her as a mom of two 10 year olds with no childcare while running a full-time business. I love that she's able to take the work that we created back to her clients and help them quickly shift into curiosity and neural pathway repatterning. Curious how this work can benefit you? https://linktr.ee/movewithdeb - click this link above in my profile and book at 45 minute consultation.
Okay, so maybe, just maybe we're getting to the point where we could really use a break. This stretch of UFC cards has been pretty damn great, but uh... Stephen Thompson vs Anthony Pettis? What's up? This week on Heavy Hands, we're talking about... Is Anthony Pettis a sneakily tough matchup for Stephen Thompson? Does Justin Willis have the defensive wrestling to check the chin of Curtis Blaydes? Jussier Formiga vs Deiveson Figueiredo--a meaningless fight that should've been so, so meaningful Masvidal's KO of Till, and his backstage scuffle with Leon Edwards (Connor thinks it was cool, Phil thinks it was lame and is, therefore, a lame, himself) Why is Leon Edwards so good at fighting in his opponents' area of expertise? Did Oezdemir actually beat Dominick Reyes, and what does the fight tell us about two potential Jon Jones challengers? Nathaniel Wood, and Claudio Silva vs Danny Roberts
Dr. Dan welcomes author/editor/expert Lisa Stiepock of ToughLove to the Parent Footprint podcast. Among other achievements Lisa Stiepock was the Editor of Disney’s award winning parenting magazine Wondertime and she is currently the editor of UCONN magazine. Dr. Dan and Lisa discuss the new parenting anthology (Dan is a contributor) toughLOVE: Raising Confident, Kind, Resilient Kids (published by Simon & Schuster) and the companion online platform. Lisa’s vision as editor was to bring together amazing parenting experts in an advice book and online for tackling the many different parenting challenges. In addition to a book ToughLove is also a thriving unique online community. Lisa explains that the book and community provide balanced, practical advice for parents from child psychology experts on how to handle almost everything - from picky eating to media consumption to the homework wars. Questions such as: How do we set limits on what our children are exposed to without sheltering them too much? How do we raise them to be resilient, empathetic, upstanding adults? How do we get them to put down their smartphones and have a conversation with us? How do we spend time with our teenagers when it appears that they don’t want to be with us? Dr. Dan and Lisa dive into several chapters in detail and discuss how the challenges of parenting evolve as the world becomes more complex. The book offers advice from professors at Ivy League medical schools, New York Times bestselling authors, and top parenting coaches who have appeared on the Today show, Good Morning America, The Oprah Winfrey Show, CBS Evening News, 20/20, CNN World News Tonight, and NPR. They address many issues, from the timeless (picky eating, homework battles, how to have The Talk) to the timely (social media safety, feelings of entitlement, ways to balance schedules). Their breadth of clinical expertise and years of coaching real families will help parents build a commonsense framework for approaching all kinds of dilemmas in a way that reflects their personal values and preferred parenting styles. Lisa distills all of her own incredible experience and work and gives us some parenting advice that will work for every age – listen. She’s takes this one-word concept with her every day of her own parenting journey and Dr. Dan explains why. Finally, the show ends with Lisa’s Parent Footprint moment – which is actually made up of many moments. As a Mom her favorite (and recent) moment was with her teen daughter participating in a local Women’s March movement and it represented the culmination of Lisa’s parenting by modeling the importance of giving back, taking a stand, and the importance of being part of social causes and the political community. And perhaps most of all Lisa reflects on how she taught her daughter about the importance of family. Watch this free video to learn more about Dr. Dan and Parent Footprint Awareness Training®.
