You all know I've been fascinated with the world of chronic pain science for a long time now. In fact, I did an episode on lowering pain signals through calming the brain and nervous system back in 2019 but I've been on a continuously evolving research journey since. And this research has led me to Curable, an app for chronic pain, that works by helping to reprogram the brain and nervous system so we can unlearn pain pathways and reduce chronic pain flare ups. I absolutely love Curable, and use it with my clients to help them to address the ways in which trauma, stress and a heightened nervous system could be contributing to their pain levels. I first came across Whitney some years ago, when I was early in my recovery from migraine and I was binging Nicole Sachs's podcast, which is called The Cure for Chronic Pain. Whitney was a guest who came on the podcast to talk about her own personal recovery from pelvic pain. She had such an engaging and inspiring voice that I wanted to know more, so I followed her on Instagram, as one does. And I eventually learned that Whitney is not only an incredible person who talks about her own healing in a relatable and uplifting way, she's also the amazing graphic designer behind the websites and social media branding of many well-known names in the chronic pain recovery world, including Nicole Sachs, Alan Gordon, the Curable app and more. But she didn't start out in the mind-body world. Whitney studied graphic design at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco and shortly after college, she was recruited as the lead designer for Jamba Juice, applying her hand-lettering and illustration skills as part of her design work for all their in-store collateral. Other brands she's worked on include Pottery Barn, West Elm, and Williamns-Sonoma. But after working as a corporate designer in the retail space for over 15 years, she reached a point of burnout and her body let her know. She discovered what she was experiencing was TMS — or mind-body chronic symptoms — and she was amazed at the results of using neuroplasticity in her recovery. Since then, she became passionate about using her design experience to service experts in the mind body space. Whitney also winds up coaching her design clients on what has become my favorite topic lately: How the entrepreneurship journey totally mirrors the mind-body healing journey, with all of its ups and downs, leaps forward and setbacks, and I can't wait to share with you our conversation about it! Our guest has hosted hundreds of patients on ketamine-assisted psychedelic trips and has gone on a few of his own, yet his experience is that dreamwork can be even more profound. Dr. Darren Jakubec is an emergency-room anesthetist and runs a pain clinic in northern British Columbia. Jake talks about his history with dreaming and inner work and then gives an example of working a dream with a pain clinic patient. He describes his experience with a ketamine clinic which he ran for several years, describing psychedelics as an inner work accelerant which uses much of the same language as dreaming. After the break we take a dream share from Steve Popp, co-host of the “In the Garden” program which precedes the Dream Journal on Saturday mornings on KSQD. The dream features powerful spiritual themes which leads us into Jake giving his analogy about psychedelics vs dreaming which he summarizes as fire hose vs garden hose. Over time, the pain, fear, and lack of use create atrophy or muscle weakening in the back, which only sends you deeper into pain, fear of use, and weakening. The worst thing you could do with exercises like the barbell bent over a row is to keep doing it, thinking the pain will eventually go away. Instead, while you continue to learn to heal the source of pain, we want to pick exercises that allow us to train these "scary" or "painful" muscles in ways that promote healing and strength building. Early detection of cancer remains the single-best way to combat a disease that is the second-leading killer in the world. But many of the resources in the fight against cancer are devoted to relatively ineffective late-stage treatments. Bruce Ratner, known by many New Yorkers for his real estate projects, is entering the cancer battlefield, co-authoring a book that's calling for a new approach to combating the disease. Ratner, who sits on the board of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Weill Cornell Medical College, is making a push for better cancer screening. He joined NY1's Errol Louis in front of a live audience at the Center for Brooklyn History to discuss his book, “Early Detection: Catching Cancer When It's Curable,” and how the death of his brother from metastatic cancer brought him to write it. They also talked about the importance of early screenings and expanding access to cancer screenings in poor communities. Bruce Ratner, real estate developer, philanthropist, founder of the Michael D. Ratner Center For Early Detection of Cancer (CEDC), and co-author of Early Detection: Catching Cancer When It's Curable (OR Books, 2024), argues for earlier and more equitable cancer screening.
Every year, tuberculosis claims over a million lives despite being curable. Tuberculosis or TB is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. About 5–10% of people infected with TB will eventually get symptoms. In the early stages a TB infection might cause chest pain, a cough, night sweats, and loss of appetite. But eventually it could create holes in the lungs and cause you to cough up blood. And of course, TB can be deadly.In this episode of Tiny Matters, Sam and Deboki talk with TB researcher Uzma Khan as well as John Green, the author of books including The Anthropocene Reviewed, Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars, and Turtles All the Way Down. John is also the co-creator of Crash Course and one half of the vlogbrothers — the other half being his brother Hank Green, who Deboki and Sam chatted with on the show last year. Although he's best known as an author and YouTuber, last summer John made headlines for something else: fighting for more equitable access to tuberculosis treatments, particularly bedaquiline, an incredibly effective and essential medicine for patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis.In this episode, Sam and Deboki cover the science and history of this devastating yet treatable disease, the recent public pressure on companies that is leading to increased treatment and testing access, and clinical trials that make John and Uzma hopeful that one day this humanity-plaguing disease could be gone. In this episode, I interview Tai Kuncio. She is a fellow moderator in the "Tell Me About Your Pain" Facebook Group. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/695823314550483) Tai had various pains starting in childhood, which they attributed to being athletic. But she struggled the most with chronic knee pain. At one point after knee surgery, she was doing physical therapy 4 to 5 hours per day and still not getting better. It wasn't her weakness or muscle dysfunction, but her fear that was driving her pain. Finally when she moved across the world to Africa and gave up the intensity with what she was trying to heal, she embraced the mind-body approach. She no longer struggles with chronic daily pain, and when symptoms come up she knows how to handle them so they don't stick around long. This week I share an interview with my client, Lucas. He struggled with several years of anxiety that was getting worse and more debilitating with time. At times it was even difficult for him to go to the store or to lunch with a friend without worrying, "what if I get an anxiety attack?" After 3 months of somatic coaching with me, Lucas felt like he had found the missing piece. He had already tried meditation, breathing, yoga, acupuncture- all the "right" things to decrease the anxiety in his life. But this approach taught him the tools he needed to actually unlearn the anxiety- so his brain produced it less and less. In this episode, I interview 3 women with amazing healing stories. We all met as Moderators for the "Tell Me About Your Pain" Facebook group created by Alan Gordon. Kristina has a list of symptoms that were healed with the mind-body approach. Including anxiety, eating disorders, depression, hypothyoroidism, adrenal fatigue, POTS, leaky gut, histamine intolerance, insomnia, adrenal insufficiency, and hashimotos. Stacey suffered for 18 years with chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, IBS, Lyme disease, insomnia, body pains, and pelvic pain. Callie had anxiety, insomnia, fainting, and neck pain, which she found out was a congenital neck fusion with “creative wiring in her neck”. She was told if she moved her neck wrong and she could be paralyzed, so she had medical trauma and increased fear. Her pain spread through the left side of her body and she began to have joint instability (ankle sprains, knee dislocation, hip popping). She was diagnosed with myofascial pain syndrome, fibromyalgia, migraines, chronic fatigue, unexplained rashes, acne, and had pelvic pain with sitting.
