What's the first thought that pops into your head about money? If it's not sunshine and rainbows, you're not alone. The truth is, your brain has been hijacked by years of programming from your family, society, and the endless BS we're fed about money. That programming? It's what's keeping you stuck, stressed, and in a constant cycle of scarcity. But here's the kicker: It doesn't have to be this way. In this powerhouse reboot episode, I'm joined by Kara Loewentheil, J.D., Master Certified Coach, and creator of the top-rated podcast Unf*ck Your Brain*. Kara's here to drop the ultimate guide to rewiring your money mindset with tools that actually work. Spoiler alert: Your wiring—not your willpower—is the reason you're not where you want to be with your money. But with Kara's genius Thought Ladder technique, you'll learn how to flip the script, ditch shame, and start thinking thoughts that actually serve you (instead of sabotaging you). Here's what you'll learn: How to break free from a scarcity mindset and live like abundance is your new normal. Why you don't have to hide your purchases anymore (yep, stop the guilt spiral). How does the patriarchy shape women's thoughts and actions, often without them realizing it? In this episode, Gabe Howard sits down with feminist thought leader Kara Loewentheil to discuss how patriarchal conditioning impacts women, both at work and at home. Kara explains the concept of the “brain gap” — the internal conflict between societal expectations and personal beliefs — and how women can work toward overcoming it. Through practical tools like her “10% Less (Crappy) Thought” technique, she helps listeners begin the journey of unlearning toxic thought patterns. This conversation digs into the subtle, often unnoticed ways sexism shapes women's everyday lives and offers actionable advice on how to reclaim their mental freedom and build stronger mental health. Listen now! “We're all making a deal with the devil to some extent, like I think beauty norms are patriarchal and oppressive. And also I'm about to go on a book tour, so I'm going to get a lash lift, like, because I'm going to have a lot of photos taken and I don't actually like to do makeup. And yet I want my eyes to stand out in photos. I think people assume that if you're a feminist, you are like a kind of purist ideologue. And that is not the case for me or most of the women I work with.” ~Kara Loewentheil To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official episode page. Our guest, Kara Loewentheil, J.D., is a Master Certified Life Coach, founder of The School of New Feminist Thought, and host of the internationally top-ranked podcast UnF*ck Your Brain: Feminist Self-Help for Everyone (50 million downloads and counting!).  Her first book, Take Back Your Brain: How A Sexist Society Gets in Your Head – and How to Get It Out (Penguin Life May 2024) has been called a “galvanizing debut” by Publisher's Weekly, chosen as a “must-read” by the Next Big Ideas Book Club for May 2024, and praised by NYT-bestselling authors including Mel Robbins, Elise Loehnen, Dr. Marisa Franco, and Tori Dunlap.  A graduate of Yale College and Harvard Law School, Kara did what every Ivy League lawyer should do: Quit a prestigious academic career to become a life coach! Eight years after she stepped down as director of a think tank at Columbia Law School, she has created a seven-figure business, taught millions of women how to identify the ways that sexist socialization impacts their brains, and helped women all over the world rewire their thought patterns to liberate themselves from the inside out.  Our host, Gabe Howard, is an award-winning writer and speaker who lives with bipolar disorder. A few months prior, I caught the wedding announcement for my friend and colleague, Kara Lowentheil, in the NY Times. It wasn't the flowers or her dress (even though those were, of course, stunning) that caught my attention. It was the initial texting exchange she had with her now husband in the early days of dating. In short: It was pretty clunky.I spend a lot of time working through and dealing with clients initial digital conversations — in the apps and via text. It can be SO EASY to make grandiose assumptions around a person based on their texting behavior. In this episode, Kara and I unpack:The problematic nature of those assumptions and how they're really more reflective of our own conditioning and thought patternsThe confusion we have around what it means to "settle" and how Kara views giving in a relationship (this is SO good)Kara's go to perspective on marriage from her relationship coachThe emotional labor Kara believes in necessary for us to do for our partner – and them for us (differentiating between caretaking versus a collaborative effort)How we don't necessarily need to have our partners come "fully therapized" before we meet....and so much more. This is definitely an episode I'll go back to and listen to again and again!Buy Kara's New BookVisit Kara's WebsiteWork with me PrivatelyConnect on InstagramWebsitePodcast Production by James Jorge

When it comes to books that have impacted my life for the better, Kara Loewentheil's Take Back Your Brain: How a Sexist Society Gets in Your Head—and How to Get It Out tops the list. It came out May 21, and in it she writes that our thoughts “are like GPS—they tell your brain what to focus on, how to feel, and what to do. You have to set that GPS on purpose to create the life you want.” To do so, Kara walks us through three steps: 1. How to identify what thoughts are really driving you. 2. How to evaluate whether a thought is serving you or not. 3. How to change your thoughts. Today on the show we're talking about the Voice as a proper noun, neuroplasticity, the brain gap, the thought-emotion-behavior-return loop, and how to create a new neural pathway through the brilliant thought ladder concept. If it all sounds overwhelming, I promise you, both Kara's book and this conversation breaks it all down into easily digestible and understandable bits that will improve your life. If my ringing endorsement isn't enough, Take Back Your Brain is a New York Times bestseller, a No. 1 nonfiction bestseller for USA Today, and a Publishers Weekly bestseller. If you are looking to stop endless negative self-talk and step into power and confidence and joy—and especially if you're a woman—you have arrived at the right conversation as we aim to take back our thoughts, getting rid of the ones that no longer serve us. Kara is the host of the extremely popular “UnF*ck Your Brain” podcast; she's also a Harvard Law School graduate, Master Life Coach, and the founder of The New School of Feminist Thought. Take Back Your Brain is her first book, but my goodness, I hope it's not her last. There are a lot of societal pressures for women to act a certain way. Some of these pressures are subtle while others are more obvious. But the messages women start receiving at a young age can take a toll on their self-worth. When Kara Loewentheil became an Ivy League graduate turned women's rights lawyer, she realized the reason she still didn't feel good enough was because she had bought into some of the messages about how women should be. Do you ever think: "I can't ever lose weight. I'm doing it all wrong" "Everyone at work will find out I have no idea what I'm doing" "I should love my body, but I'm just disgusting" You're not broken for having thoughts like this. And you're not alone. It's normal for women to have these thoughts. From a young age, your brain absorbed TONS of messages about what is expected of women. How you "should" and "should not" think, feel, look, etc. It's obvious where some of these messages came from. For years, magazines, TV shows, and social media posts only showed one type of woman (thin and perfect). But some of the messages you received weren't as obvious. Like only seeing men in leadership roles. Or feeling pressured by your family to get married. These "unspoken" messages also impacted you. Get ready to learn how these messages hold you back in life and in weightloss. Today, I interview Master Certified Coach and podcast powerhouse Kara Loewentheil. She wrote a new book: "Take Back Your Brain: How A Sexist Society Gets In Your Head - And How to Get It Out." Kara is a master at helping women understand how they've been socialized -- and what they can do about it. Listen to Take Back Your Brain with Kara Loewentheil to discover: The 2 brain gaps that hold us back The importance of normalizing our "bad" thoughts Simple ways you can start to unwind harmful messages Knowing all of this can be a game changer for weightloss. I didn't lose my weight until I stopped talking to myself like an asshole. But, back then, I didn't know WHY I was so mean to myself. In today's episode, Kara helps you understand why you always make yourself wrong. Or feel like everything is your fault. Or have a hard time trusting yourself and making decisions. And, most importantly, how to take back your brain so you can live your life as the badass woman you are.   Get the Free Course here: https://NoBSFreeCourse.com

Rewiring your brain to create new beliefs and live the life you want on your terms. If you know me, you know I've always said that being an entrepreneur is 80% about your mindset. The webinars, list building, and funnels can all be taught, but getting your head in the right space is what will truly set you apart as a business owner!  But did you know that as female entrepreneurs, we are actually socially programmed to have more anxiety, more stress, and more self-doubt? This makes it so incredibly challenging to embody that bold and unapologetic mindset. Lucky for you, my guest today is here to help you create brand new beliefs and lead you directly to the life you've always wanted!  In this episode, I sit down with the fabulous Kara Loewentheil, a former lawyer turned master life coach, who literally spends her days helping women rewire their brains for success. Today, we're talking all about hacking your mindset using cognitive change strategies to unlearn those frustrating societal expectations.  Over my 15 years of entrepreneurship, I've changed my mindset around lots of things, like money, my worth, and taking up space. But, even millions of dollars later, I still have a lot to learn. And I'm telling you – I learned so much from this chat with Kara, and I know you will, too!  Today, we discuss:  5:35: What it actually means to be a feminist and how Kara teaches women to liberate themselves and achieve their dream life on their terms 12:19: Tips for releasing the daily societal pressures put on you as a woman  17:54: Why women are socialized to prioritize others' needs over their own (and how this can manifest in motherhood!)  23:03: Being bold with your money as a female entrepreneur 29:49: How to reprogram your brain to stop negative self-talk and build new beliefs  33:40: Advice for overcoming the societal conditioning that leads to guilt, anxiety, and stress in women  37:40: Changing your perspective on time management to be more present in daily life  43:37: The steps women should take to run their businesses boldly, confidently, and courageously   51:01: Why Kara wrote her life-changing book  Listen in and start showing up for yourself in a stronger and more consistent way in every aspect of your life!  Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts  "I love Amy and Online Marketing Made Easy." Women are put into all sorts of boxes i.e. sexist roles and expectations on who we “should” be. Life coach Kara Loewentheil is back to talk some sense into us and teach us how to break these internalized thought patterns. You will learn... what “thought work” is and how it can help your mindset how to break out of the “virgin/whore” + “maiden/mother/crone” paradigms why “positive thinking” usually doesn't work long-term (and what helps instead) how our sexist socializations project onto the women around us Toward the end, Kara coaches Mary on some of the conflicting thoughts she's having about her career. Remember: the only way to stop caring about what other people think about you is to start caring more about what YOU think about you. Kara Loewentheil, J.D. is a Master Certified Life Coach, founder of The School of New Feminist Thought, and host of the internationally top-ranked podcast UnF*ck Your Brain: Feminist Self-Help for Everyone (50 million downloads and counting!). Eight years after she stepped down as director of a think tank at Columbia Law School, she has created a multiple-7-figure business, taught millions of women how to identify the ways that sexist socialization impacts their brains, and helped women all over the world rewire their thought patterns to liberate themselves from the inside out. “There are studies showing that, once your basic needs are met, and you're not worried about losing your house, losing your health care, increases in money don't significantly increase happiness, right? So I think, you know, money helps alleviate the very real biological primitive fear of you're gonna die if you don't have shelter and food and in our society, healthcare, but when it comes to things beyond that, I think that we have been sold the lie that money creates security and it's a natural conflation because at a certain point for securing the necessities, and it makes other problems easier to solve also clearly, but emotionally, money is not the solution to an emotional problem any more than food or having a certain kind of body or being married or not married.”  So says Kara Loewentheil, author of Take Back Your Brain: How a Sexist Society Gets in Your Head—and How to Get it Out. While Kara and I went to college together, I first met her when she was gracious enough to have me on her hugely successful podcast, UnF*ck Your Brain, where I obviously fell in love with…her brain. Kara is theoretically an unlikely life coach—she graduated from Harvard Law School, litigated reproductive rights, and ran a think tank at Columbia University before deciding that she wanted to go upstream and rewire our culture's brain instead.  Kara is fixated on what she calls the “Brain Gap” in women—the thought patterns so natural to women that keep us feeling anxious and disempowered. It's in that “Brain Gap” that we continue to both unconsciously support and re-enact a culture that doesn't do great things for women. My work and Kara's work are very aligned. In fact, Take Back Your Brain: How a Sexist Society Gets in Your Head—and How to Get it Out is a cousin to On Our Best Behavior—one that's written with actionable insights, by a life coach, for getting to the root of the problem.
