Cammi and AJ welcome Captain of the US Sled Hockey Team, Josh Pauls, onto the bus! Josh was born without tibia bones and had both his legs amputated at 10 months old. He convince his parents to join a sled hockey team and ended up making his debut on the US Team when he was only fifteen years old. Two years later, he won gold at the 2010 Vancouver Paralympics and was the youngest player on the team. In Sochi, Josh and his teammates went on to win another gold in 2014 and a third in 2018 in Pyeongchang. Josh talks about his training on and off the ice, his Paralympic experience, how he transitioned from playing forward to defense, speaks about inclusion in the game of hockey, preparation for the 2022 Paralympics, how he got his nickname “Spuds” and much more! She is currently working for the New Jersey Devils as Director of Player & Team Development while also recently beginning work with the US Women’s National Hockey Team. Brianna Decker is a professional ice hockey player. She currently plays in the PWHPA for the New Hampshire Region’s team, Team Women Sports Foundation, and on the US National Team. For her collegiate career, Decker attended the University of Wisconsin where she played four years and won the Patty Kazmaier Award. In 2014 in Sochi, she won a silver medal and then the gold in 2018 in Pyeongchang. Cammi and AJ welcome Intersectionality Consultant for the Seattle Kraken, Chanel Keenan! Chanel is 22 years old and lives in the Boston area. She has Osteogenesis Imperfecta, also know as Brittle Bone Disease. Chanel fell in love with the game of hockey, but noticed that she did not see many people like her represented. Aware of the need for more inclusion in hockey, she wrote an open letter to the NHL and its organizations. In the letter, she explained that there was room to grow the game and its fan base and that, with her background, she could help spur that growth. Chanel does not allow anything to slow her down and nothing stops this girl from making a difference! This week Cammi & AJ welcome activist, athlete, author and documentary film maker, Kathryn Bertine! Kathryn shares with Cammi and AJ her amazing stories about her life, athletic career and her fight for equity in women's cycling. In 2006, Kathryn picked up an assignment as writer with ESPN. She would choose a sport and try to qualify for the 2008 Olympics while writing about her experience. While she did not qualify for the Olympics, she fell in love with the sport and officially became a professional cyclist in 2012. Two years later, her activism in women's cycling led to her helping create La Course by Tour de France- a women's event at the Tour de France. While there is still more progress to be made, the impact Kathryn has made on women's cycling thus far is immeasurable.
