Nick Alberga & David Pagnotta tee up Toronto's home date with Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals, a game that could potentially mark Ovechkin's final visit to Scotiabank Arena.Pagnotta also provides the latest intel on the Maple Leafs' ongoing GM search, with names continuing to surface and the process beginning to take shape.Plus, Don Granato stops by ahead of coaching Team USA at the upcoming Men's World Championship. He discusses the opportunity, potential American Leafs on the radar, and what's next for him at the NHL level.
Giovanna Granato"Tripla eco"H.E. Holy smokes do we have a jam packed show for you today or what!First up, we're talkin' about the 1992-93 Los Angeles Kings - ol' Wayne and the boys looked pretty boss in the silver and black and their play on the ice backed it up. Lucky Luc Robitaille lead them with 125 points, and #99 joined them at mid-season after resting his sore back to turn it up and take them to the cup final! Kelly Hrudey was solid between the pipes, the offence was paced by the likes of Kurri, Granato, Sandstrom, and a stellar young D corps featuring Blake, Zhitnik, Sydor plus wily vets Chuck Huddy and Marty McSorley patrolled the blue line. These Kings went all the way to the finals before losing out to Patrick Roy and the Habs - the last time a team north of the border hoisted the cup!In period two, we start by talkin' trades - Rasmus heads to the desert to join the Knights in Vegas, while Kiefer Sherwood takes his 5030 to the Bay Area to join up with an upstart young Sharks squad. With an extended break on tap for the Olympics, could this early movement be a sign of things to come? Could the Breadman be on the move, and who will the Canucks ship out next?Speaking of the Olympics, players from all nations are dropping like flies, which means that call ups are in store - will Schieff the Knife get his long overdue call with Brayden Point on the shelf? Finally, in period three, co-host Jared tells us about his big goal from the weekend, the fellas rip into some more ProSet packs and we play some great music, new and old, always!
Welcome to Daily Faceoff Live with Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton! We start the show with Mitch Marner's first game against his former team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Jack Eichel scored the OT winner in a 6-5 victory for the Golden Knights who are in Toronto next week. Ilya Sorokin padded his Vezina resume with a 35 save shutout against the Edmonton Oilers. Hutts breaks down Sorokin's game and his first thoughts when Sorokin entered the league.Artemi Panarin is on the trade block, what team should pursue the Russian winger the hardest? The Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Carolina Hurricanes, Minnesota Wild and LA Kings are all teams highlighted by the guys and seen in Matt Larkin's article on Daily Faceoff.Former Buffalo Sabres coach Don Granato joins the show to talk Sabres hot streak, Tage Thompson, and the US Olympic roster.SHOUTOUT TO OUR SPONSORS!!

In episode #288, we welcome former NHL Head Coach Don Granato. He is of course a member of possibly the most accomplished hockey family to come out of United States. He got his start coaching in 1993 with the Wisconsin Capitals of the USHL, and since then has been getting his reps in across a multiple of leagues and levels, most recently as the Head Coach of the Buffalo Sabres. And as you'll hear, there may not be a better person to have a conversation about player development with. His story of how he positioned himself to enhance world class talent is fascinating. We cover a lot of ground in this episode, and I sense you're going to leave with pages of notes. Listen as he shares why experimenting in practice is key for team growth, why coaching less should be the objective, and the incredible story of switching from goalie to player.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by frenemy and recurring guest Joe From Queens to discuss a pretty significant week in the landscape of Buffalo sports, including the firing of Buffalo Sabres head coach Don Granato and a report that Terry Pegula is willing to sell a chunk of the Buffalo Bills. Tim Graham of The Athletic broke the news late last week that Pegula is willing to put up around 25% of the Bills for sale, bringing in a minority partner but still maintaining a controlling interest in the franchise. The guys talk about why this is happening, what it means for now and what it may mean for the future. Also, the report says that no part of the Sabres is for sale but do the guys expect that to change? Sticking with The Athletic, it was a big week for the outlet as it pertains to Buffalo, as besides Graham's scoop on Bills ownership, Matthew Fairburn scored the first interview with now former Sabres head coach Don Granato after he was fired last week. The guys talk about the article, their takes on Granato getting fired and who's most to blame for it----and Joe has some takes/stories on Lindy Ruff, who's perceived as a realistic candidate to replace Granato. They also talk about the press conferences Brandon Beane, Sean McDermott and Josh Allen had as well as one final chat and Bills thoughts between the two before the NFL draft this coming Thursday and much more. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is recording/streaming live from Imperial Pizza in South Buffalo and is joined by Buffalo Sabres beat reporter Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic as well as Kris Baker of Sabres Prospect, who together form the Baker Fairburn Hockey Show for a conversation primarily focused on the Sabres in wake of the organization firing head coach Don Granato this past week. Its always nice to get together with Matthew for a chat and the timing couldn't be better on this one. The Sabres fired Granato the morning after the regular season finale, a surprise to many as it felt Terry Pegula would retain him going into next season seeing Granato had an extension. Matthew has several thoughts on the firing and why he believes it has to happen. Matthew was also at the arena this week for players locker room cleanout day and media availability and shares some of what he heard in addition to some thoughts on who can be the next head coach to take over. Could it be Lindy Ruff? Matthew has also covered the Buffalo Bills for The Athletic previously and the guys spend some time talking football, including getting Matthew's thoughts on Stefon Diggs and him being traded for Houston, the assumption that the Bills will take a wide receiver with their first draft pick next week and his thoughts on head coach Sean McDermott. That plus a little wings, Buffalo, media talk and much more. Shout out as always to Imperial Pizza for their great hospitality and killer wings. This show was recorded at the 1035 Abbott Road location but they also now have their 1655 Main Street location alive and kicking as well. You can follow Matt on Twitter at @MatthewFairburn and of course check out his coverage of the Sabres at The Athletic, Be sure to check out the Baker Fairburn Hockey Show wherever you get your podcasts. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter: @PatMoranTweets. 00:00-20:00: Mike Lindsley breaks down what's next for the Sabres after the team fired Don Granato.
On this episode of Talking Buffalo as we reach the one week mark before the 2024 NFL Draft, Patrick Moran goes over eight draft prospects that he likes that are not going to be first-round selections in addition to thoughts and commentary immediately following the Buffalo Sabres at least somewhat surprising firing of head coach Don Granato on Tuesday. It's easy to spend most if not all your time as a fan or content creator obsessing over the biggest names and who will be the first pick of the Bills next Thursday whether they stay at No. 28 or move up for someone, but in reality drafts and even championships are often made on days two and three of the NFL draft. Patrick has eight guys likely to be selected in the second to fifth round range that he's pretty high and thinks could be a great fit for Buffalo. The list includes a pair of guys in the trenches that could play meaningful snaps right away, two wide receivers that could contribute and potentially even start by season's end and a pair of prospects from the team Patrick's a big fan of, Notre Dame. Turning to the Sabres, Patrick expresses his thoughts on the team announcing Granato's dismissal the morning following their season finale in Tampa the night before. Patrick's admittedly borderline shocked and outlines reasons why he thinks the move was completely necessary to show not just the roster, but fans that they're fully committed to winning and ending the longest playoff drought in NHL history. Patrick also gives credit to Pegula for not sticking with Granato despite giving him an extension and lists a few guys he can see taking over the reigns, including one Sabres fans are incredibly familiar with. Spoiler alert---it's Lindy Ruff. That and much more today. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter: @PatMoranTweets. Jeff and Greg kick things off debating if the Flyers are who the Sabres thought they would be this season, before getting into John Tortorella's approach to coaching a rebuilding team. They discuss which NHL coaches they would like to see write a book, Don Granato sounding defeated after last night's 9-4 loss, if the Sabres' head coach is on the hot seat, as well as Buffalo's goaltending and defensive struggles. Then, Jeff and Greg get into Devon Toews calling out his Avalanche teammates last night following a loss to the Blackhawks, Jack Hughes' tough game against the Flyers last night, and more!
