Lacrosse is more than just a sport; it's a mirror — one that reflects the history, tensions, and contradictions of America itself. So posits acclaimed sports journalist/renowned Sports Illustrated Senior Writer S.L. Price on this week's episode, as we explore his impressive new book "The American Game: History and Hope in the Country of Lacrosse" — a sweeping chronicle of the Indigenous origins, elite entrenchment, and modern upheaval of America's truest "oldest sport.” From its sacred beginnings among the Native American (and First Nations) Haudenosaune — where the “Creator's Game” served as both spiritual expression and a form of conflict resolution — to its adoption and reshaping by white elites in Ivy League corridors, lacrosse has long occupied a complicated cultural space. Price brings us inside this uniquely American paradox: a sport that's simultaneously expanding at lightning speed, yet reckoning with the deep scars of exclusion, privilege, and violence. We dive into lacrosse's turbulent professional history, including the shaky rise and fall of multiple pro leagues, the game's fraught image in the wake of high-profile scandals, and the symbolic power of the Iroquois Nationals playing as a sovereign team on the world stage. Along the way, Price shares stories of legendary figures like Jim Brown, Kyle Harrison, Lyle Thompson, and Oren Lyons — voices who have reshaped what lacrosse means, and who it belongs to. This isn't just a conversation about sports — it's about race, class, identity, and what it means to belong in America. If you think you know lacrosse, think again. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/good-seats-still-avalable?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Old Fort Baseball Co. On this episode, Travis shares why you shouldn't be surprised by the 5-seed Waterdogs & 7-seed Chaos meeting for the Premier Lacrosse League Championship on Sunday. He also gives his pick for the game. Chaos attackman Josh Byrne then joins the show to preview the game (11:43). He shares thoughts on going against Waterdogs goalie Dillon Ward in another championship game, and some coach Andy Towers stories. Fresh off his first season in the league, Atlas defenseman Koby Smith talks about his rookie year in the PLL, and what it was like to play for his high school coach Ben Rubeor now as a pro (26:06). Cannons midfielder Ryan Drenner also stops by to talk about his season and what it's like to play with Lyle Thompson (38:25). Both Koby & Ryan also share their thoughts on the PLL Championship matchup.
The Premier Lacrosse League has an incredible crop of rookies that have had amazing seasons thus far in 2022. In this 215th episode of the LaxFactor Podcast I'm going to talk about these PLL first years including Brendan Nichtern (Chrome), Logan Wisnauskas (Chrome), Chris Gray (Atlas), Asher Nolting (Cannons), Matt Moore (Archers) and Jack Hannah (Waterdogs). Each has had a great rookie campaign, but to me, Nichtern and Wisnauskas have stood above the rest. Both are top 5 in points with Nicthern tied for 2nd in the lead with Teat and Pannell (not bad company). Gray has been great playing alongside Jeff Teat and the duo could be the best two-man tandem in the PLL, at least in terms of youth and production. Nolting has looked solid playing with Lyle Thompson and will likely learn a ton from the GOAT as it relates to carrying the rock and generating for both himself and others. Moore and Hannah have both played very well running out of the box. EPISODE 91 - Sean Quirk, Head Coach of PLL's Cannons LC BEERS The traveling doesn't stop! Will reviews a beer from the cruise a few weeks ago, and he goes for another Hefeweizen. Floridian by Funky Budha is the choice this week. A smooth and refreshing wheat beer is filled with citrus notes and flavors. This week, Jake is in The Gateway to the West: St. Louis, Missouri. While the beer isn't as good as it is in New England, there were some bright spots in the craft scene in the STL area. Shortleaf Brewing Company (formerly Petrichor) was on the list of spots, and a 11.1% Imperial Samoa Stout took the cake for best beer on draft at the small micropub in the Winghaven neighborhood of O'Fallon. BUSINESS Air New Zealand will have bragging rights to the longest commercial flight in the world later this year when they launch a 17-hour haul from Auckland to New York City. To keep travelers from going stir-crazy they've come out with a model that would allow their passengers to rent bunk beds during their flights. The catch? Not only does it come at an additional cost to your regular seat, but you get kicked out after only 4 hours! How will this play with long-haul travelers? In the social media world, Snapchat Plus is hitting the market this summer. For $4 per month, you can get access to features like seeing who re-watched your story and pinning your top friends as a BFF. Is this a flop or a good idea? BALLS, presented by Manscaped (33:14) Sean Quirk led the Boston Cannons to the final Major League Lacrosse Championship in 2020, and earned the franchise a bid to the Premier Lacrosse League the next year. But, like many in the sport of lacrosse, his journey began far before he dreamed of calling the shots on the sidelines for the greatest players in the world. Coach Quirk joins the show to discuss his decorated career as an All-American goalie, his D3-record coaching stint at Endicott, and the lessons he's learned along the way. We also discuss coaching Paul Rabil & Lyle Thompson, how far the PLL can go, and lacrosse's potential to crack America's major sports. On this episode, Tom and Travis answer some "pressing questions" entering Week 3 of the Premier Lacrosse League season on Long Island. Cannons goalie Nick Marrocco joins the show to discuss the team's start to the season and what it's like playing on the same team as legends like Brodie Merrill & Lyle Thompson (21:50). Travis & Tom then discuss some of the new college coaching hires as they're joined by new Bryant head coach Brad Ross (42:22). He discusses his return to Bryant, and what he's learned from some of the coaches he's worked with in the past. Finally, they preview the deciding Game 3 of the NLL Finals, Travis and Tom each pick who they think will win between the Buffalo Bandits & Colorado Mammoth (53:34).
On this episode of "Lacrosse Now", Travis shares his favorite storylines for some of the teams and games in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. UNC's Chris Gray discusses what it was like to break the NCAA's career points record and be in the same conversation as great players like Lyle Thompson & Rob Pannell. Plus, Hopkins coach Janine Tucker joins the show to talk about her final NCAA Tournament as she will be retiring at the end of the season.
On today's episode it was another massive weekend in college lacrosse. The weekend ended with Chris Gray breaking Lyle Thompson's record for most career points in NCAA DI men's lacrosse history. Elsewhere in the ACC, Tucker Dordevic entered the transfer portal right after his season with Syracuse ended. The Ivy League conference tournament has finally decided itself, and we gave our picks for the Patriot League quarterfinal games coming up on Tuesday 5/3.
Boston Cannons attackman Ryan Drenner joins the PLL Happy Hour to talk Cannons-Atlas, his career, playing with Paul Rabil and Lyle Thompson, plus a little bit about fatherhood and Monster Jam. Matt Kinnear, Kevin Brown and guest Kyle Devitte talk the games — and talk themselves out of their picks.
On the latest episode of the No Angle podcast, Matt had the pleasure of chatting with his favorite player, the artist himself, Lyle Thompson. Available on YouTube & all podcast platforms.
Lyle Thompson finally had his breakout game for the Cannons going for 5 goals and 4 assists in the Cannons one-goal win over the Archers. Stephen Rehfuss put up 2 goals and 3 assists in the win. The save of the year was made by Nick Marrocco as he turned away a doorstep chance with only a second remaining in the contest to secure the victory. The Waterdogs pulled away from the Chrome on Sunday as well, winning out 12-6. Mikie Schlosser was good for 3 goals and Connor Kelly stuck 2 singles in the win. Jake Withers won 59% of his face-off draws over Connor Farrell. Withers stat line was a solid 1 goal, 13 of 22 at the face-off stripe, 5 groundballs and 3 caused turnovers. He was instrumental in the win. The All-Star game is up next, I think Ament's squad is going to take it. They have Ament, Teat, Schlosser and more. All the hot offensive hands and thats what pays the bills for All-Star games. The Redwoods are currently sitting on top of the PLL standings with a 4-3 record and the tie-breakers, but this league is up for grabs, no doubt. It's beyond scoring a goal. It's beyond points. it's beyond any of those because it's done so much healing for us." - Lyle on the meaning of lacrosse to his community (25:00). "I had a spiritual relationship with that stick and I personified that stick and I would sleep with that stick for years...When I stepped on the field, I knew that we had such a deep connection and that it was going to take care of me." Lyle on the relationship with his childhood lacrosse stick (26:32). "I was never into alcohol. I never had a sip of alcohol in my life. I had never had any drugs. I've never smoked weed. I've always stayed on a pretty strict path. My parents were sort of strict on those things and I just didn't see any purpose in it." - Lyle explains how he's avoided distractions (33:45). "We're on T-shirts. We're mascots. We're the names on the back of cars. We're the names of states and our jewelry is even trending...At the end of the day, the truth isn't being told." - Lyle on the mistreatment of Native Americans (39:14). "Have an open mind and always ask questions to yourself, others, to teachers, to parents, to friends, even to enemies. I think it's important to always ask questions and be true to yourself and keep an open mind and always be willing to learn. And if you can observe when you're having fun, hey, keep doing more of that." - Lyle's advice to young people trying to find their purpose in life (46:03).

Lyle Thompson joins me to discuss how his Onondoga roots are intertwined with Lacrosse, known as [Deyhontsigwa'ehs] in his native language. Lyle is the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer and someone universally regarded as one of the best lacrosse players in the world. (Member of the: Iroquois Nationals, Chesapeake and Georgia Swarm). Despite his well-deserved accolades and his love of the sport, so too is the love of his culture and heritage.
Lyle was named "Player of the Decade" by Inside Lacrosse. At the University of Albany, he was a two-time recipient of the Tewaaraton Award (for Division I lacrosse's best player). In 2016, Lyle was the 1st pick in both Major League Lacrosse's (MLL) and National Lacrosse League's (NLL) drafts. In 2017, he won a Champion's Cup and was NLL's Most Valuable Player. Two years later in 2019, he won a MLL Championship and was recognized as the Most Valuable Player, again. Lyle remains one of, if not the best professional lacrosse players in the world, a Nike Athlete, N7 Ambassador, the CEO of Thompson Brothers Lacrosse and President of "4 The Future Foundation." In this conversation, Lyle discusses with Mark Glicini flow state, the difference between a game and a sport, as well as core values, the importance of habits/routines and an alignment between passion and purpose.
Discipleship: the church talks about often, but what is it? And how can we make 2021 a year where we grow deeper into knowing and becoming like Jesus? Our Worship Director, Lyle Thompson, looks at what we can take from Matt 28:18-20 to give us some truths to live by as we look to make discipleship a priority in 2021.
Everyone knows by now. The Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) just absorbed (aka merged with) Major League Lacrosse and lacrosse fans are going bonkers. Some are happy. Some are sad. Some are indifferent. Some are popping hilarious shots at Paul Rabil. In the end, this was inevitable, although I am a touch surprised it's happened so soon. In hindsight though, we all should have seen it coming. In today's episode we'll talk about what this means for the MLL players. What it means for some of the aging or fringe PLL players. The deepest college lacrosse draft in a decade, maybe ever is about to drop, and there are probably only about 8 to 12 roster spots available for the guys coming out. College guys I can't wait to see play at the next level? Michael Sowers, Jeff Teat, Mac O'Keefe, JT Giles-Harris to name a few. MLL guys I hope make the transition and do well, Lyle Thompson, Ryan Lee, Sean Sconone, Bubba Voigt, Bryce Wasserman. So we'll talk about this PLL/MLL merger in a lot more depth today and let us know in the comments what you think. In the wake of Wednesday morning's breaking news that the Premier Lacrosse League and MLL will merge, the PLL will expand to an eighth team — Cannons LC — and MLL players will enter PLL's player pool, IL's Terry Foy and Kyle Devitte share their reactions, from what it means for the sport to who will end up adding Lyle Thompson.
Sam & Carson get into WTF Wednesday (2:21) then cover some more serious news with Lyle Thompson's video on US Lacrosse (9:36) and Ty Warner's statement on the BLM movement in the PLL (21:24). After reviewing this week's games, we jump into closing out our previous Avatar discussion by addressing older players and Lyle Thompson (38:45).
Lacrosse is finally here!!! Major League Lacrosse is one of the first professional sports to get kicked off this summer through this COVID pandemic and I couldn't be more excited. We get to see Lyle Thompson and the Bayhawks take on Shayne Jackson and the Barrage. We get to see Mark Cockerton and Bryce Wasserman lead the Boston Cannons against the NY Lizards without Rob Pannel. And then in the nightcap, we see the Connecticut Hammerheads (formerly the Rochester/Dallas Rattlers) face off against last years runner up, the Denver Outlaws. Will Sands, Michael Kraus, Bubba Voigt and company vs Grant Jr, Brendan Kavenaugh and Aslanian (sweet name). So we have lacrosse this weekend, and through the next 3 weeks between the MLL and the PLL, so let us all rejoice in the fact this is actually happening. *Support the channel, buy some swag...* https://www.laxfactor.com/ *Watch the video podcast on YouTube...* https://www.youtube.com/laxfactor --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/laxfactor/support

Lyle Thompson is arguably the best lacrosse player in the world. He plays for the Georgia Swarm in the National Lacrosse League along with his three brothers, Jeremy, Haina and Miles. Lyle is growing the game of lacrosse through his heritage and beliefs as a Native American. He has and continues to make such a big impact in and out of lacrosse that he became a Nike sponsored athlete in 2015. The other thing you may notice about Lyle is the pony tail that hangs down his back as he plays, which represents his Native Heritage. There was an incident in January this year during a game where an announcer made a remark about cutting his pony tail or “scalping” him. With an outpouring of support from fans and players around the league, this was something Lyle turned into an opportunity to educate. In September of this year Lyle will represent the Iroquois Nationals at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships. In this episode we cover the origin of lacrosse, how it is a game of medicine, how the stick was created, we debunk myths of Native Americans and have some laughs about an honorary Thompson brother… which is not an easy title to receive. This week's episode is with Kevin Rice of the Atlanta Blaze. Kevin is a former Syracuse Lacrosse player who is now in his fourth MLL season. Kevin shares how he was able to go from a small high school as a player who did not specialize in lacrosse into working his way onto the field as a starting attack. As a senior, he worked his way to winning the award for the nation's top attackman, the same year Lyle Thompson won the Tewaaraton as an attackman in Albany. He shares his thoughts on the MLL compared to the NCAA in terms of pace, coaching, and how fun it is for spectators by comparing his experience as a player in both systems. On a personal level, while in the MLL, he also suffered a major injury for the first time as a player and describes how he worked his way back from it.Kevin also has just completed law school and discusses why he chose a more traditional career path instead of going fully into lacrosse right away. We hope you enjoy the conversation and learn a little more about the game from a player's perspective. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week on the OTCBPodcast, the reigning NLL MVP, Lyle Thompson stops by to talk all things Swarm and more. The third year pro is trying to help his team get back to the NLL Finals and with five games remaining, they have their work cut out for them in a very tight Eastern division. Plus, the Mammoth have won five straight, the NLL Deadline was a total dud and the West play-off teams could be decided this weekend. All that and more, on this week's OTCBPodcast.
When I concepted and launched the podcast, I knew it would be fun to engage with my professional peers, but underestimated the value I would receive from sitting back and listening to their expertise and tips. Every guest I've hosted is a world-class high performer. She or he is mechanical, methodical, thoughtful, has high emotional intelligence, and shows incredible leadership traits. That said, I've found the common denominator and shared characteristic of all -- is hard work. Top athletes, entertainers, and entrepreneurs know how to work really hard. In Part 1 of my 3-Part Suiting Up Podcast Musings, I'm going to highlight 5 guests from 2017's class of interviewees, telling you my bottom line to their best sound bites on high performance. You'll hear from: 1. Scott Galloway on Building a Career 2. DeMaurice Smith on Task and Calendar Management 3. Venus Williams on the Importance of Nutrition 4. Lyle Thompson on Training Tips 5. Gary Vaynerchuk on Fighting Unfairly Enjoy the show. And next week, we'll discuss leadership.
“The first thing I learned from my mom, and applied it to lacrosse…was passion. And I think passion is what leads to happiness.” Lyle Thompson is the all-time leading point scorer in NCAA Division 1 lacrosse history, a Tewaaraton trophy winner (our sport’s Heisman award), a pro lacrosse MVP, and NLL Champion. His legacy of success on the field will live on for generations to come. He grew up in the Onondaga Nation in New York, and was one of five children of Doloris and Jerome Thompson. Today, he and his brothers represent some of the best talent in the professional game, competing in both MLL and NLL, building large digital and social media audiences, and are bringing powerful, cultural awareness of their Native American roots to our sport. Lyle began playing lacrosse at a very early age, and on the show, we discuss how lacrosse carries spiritual and cultural experiences with the Onondaga and Native American communities. He recounts his early years playing in the backyard with his older brothers, accompanied by no net. The Thompson's couldn't afford one. All of Lyle's equipment was refurbished, yet he was the #1 High School recruit in the country...as a sophomore. On the show, Lyle shares with us his favorite workouts, how he fuels his performance, how he's changed his sleep pattern (since listening to our show, actually), and the impact of the traveling professional lacrosse circuit. Perhaps the most intriguing part of the show begins in the back third, where Lyle and I discuss his activism as a Native American professional athlete – specifically his time at the Standing Rock protests during the North Dakota Access Pipeline disputes, as well as his stance on professional sports mascots that are discriminatory the Native American communities. Suiting Up Podcast is a show where I delve into the stories of some of today’s leading athletes, entrepreneurs, and entertainers, interviewing them and unpacking the psychology of their success.
This week on the OTCBPodcast, Thompson Brother's Lacrosse takes the Medicine Game to the people. Lyle Thompson checks in from Standing Rock as the protests in North Dakota continue. Vancouver Stealth HC Jamie Batley stops by to let us know how the Stealth's first weekend of main camp went and who stood out. Plus NLL exhibition is just a few weeks away and the NLL released some rule changes for 2017. All that and more, on OTCB.
As a follower of Jesus we're to live with a new foundation and focus. We live for a greater story. In whatever we do, we live to promote the story of Jesus. What God has done for us, and for His glory, should lead us to place Him as the foundation of our joy and the root of our desires. What if we lived this day to make Jesus more famous?! (speaker: Lyle Thompson, Worship Director of Elements)
