We don't track humor-based metrics at The Dark Zone, but if we did, this episode would be tough to beat. Barb Campbell is a fixture in the Canadian adventure racing community, and we're delighted to finally have her on the show. She's been a longtime reach guest on our episode planning whiteboard, and it was well worth the wait. Enjoy the conversation!Programming Note - The 2010 UTNE video referenced by Barb is linked below and, yeah, they were awfully tired. Thank you for listening. Dr. Bartis , a second-generation podiatrist, pursues his passion for triathlons, ultramarathons, biking, swimming, and traveling around the world. He has competed in the Ironman Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii, and the Western States 100 in California. Dr. Bartis also completed the Iditasport 75-mile survival race in February of 1996 in Alaska, with your host, Dr. Jensen. They snowshoed and ran together in blizzard conditions but finished! As a Dean, Dr. Jensen is often asked about work/life balance by his students and prospective students and Dr. Bartis is a prime example of how one can find that balance family life, podiatric medicine and pursue excellence in multiple other areas of life! Join Dr. Jensen and Dr. Bartis for an engaging discussion on achieving work-life balance in the medical field. Dr. Bartis graduated from the California college of Podiatric Medicine in 1991 and completed his surgical residency training at Stanford University Medical Center. He is board-certified podiatrist by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. Despite his busy schedule, Dr. Bartis prioritizes his family and hobbies and enjoys the rewards of his hard work. This serves as an inspiring example for current and prospective students, demonstrating that it is indeed possible to have a fulfilling career in podiatric medicine while maintaining a harmonious personal life! In this episode of Dean's Chat, Dr. Jeffrey Jensen interviews Dr. Stephen Bartis, a second-generation podiatrist from Moraga, California. Dr. Bartis shares his experiences in balancing a successful career in podiatric medicine with his passion for athletic endeavors, such as running the Western States 100 Run and completing an Ironman Triathlon. They discuss Dr. Bartis' background, training, and practice with the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. Tune in to hear about the work-life balance that podiatric medicine can provide. Dr. Stephen Bartis, a second-generation podiatrist and our guest, serves as a prime example of successfully balancing a career in podiatric medicine with a passion for athletic pursuits. Throughout his career, Dr. Bartis has actively participated in a wide range of athletic activities, including completing the Ironman Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii, running the Western States 100 Run in California, surviving adventure races in Alaska, biking double centuries, and competing in open water swim competitions. In this episode, Dr. Bartis shares his experiences and highlights the impact he has had on his patients' athletic goals. Many of his patients have expressed gratitude for his assistance in achieving milestones such as running marathons and completing challenging hikes. Dr. Bartis describes the Ironman Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii as the "holy grail" of triathlons, consisting of a grueling 2.4-mile open water swim, followed by a 112-mile bike ride, and concluding with a full marathon of 26.2 miles. Dr. Bartis explains that he prepared for this monumental race by gradually increasing his fitness level through shorter races, such as 10k runs, half marathons, and full marathons. He also incorporated "brick workouts," which involved combining long bike rides with running sessions. It took him a decade to qualify for the Ironman Triathlon and approximately five years to reach the required level of fitness. Additionally, Dr. Bartis shares his participation in other athletic challenges, including the Western States 100 Run, adventure races, and open water swim competitions. Beyond his professional and athletic endeavors, Dr. Bartis has also been actively involved in scouting and outdoor activities. This involvement has allowed him to explore the great outdoors and embark on backpacking adventures around the world. With two boys who have achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scouts, Dr. Bartis himself has taken on the role of Assistant Scoutmaster. Through scouting, he has had the opportunity to travel to various captivating locations, including Alaska, Canada, Montana, and Germany. Dr. Bartis relishes the experience of backpacking in remote areas, even in places where access to medical assistance may be limited. Despite the potential risks, his love for the outdoors has led to countless remarkable experiences and the exploration of diverse corners of the globe. https://explorepodmed.org/ Dean's Chat Website Dean's Chat Episodes Dean's Chat Blog Why Podiatric Medicine? “I do this evaluation of what is it really? Is it actually just my thoughts or is it the reality around me?”Distinguishing between subjective and objective assessments has helped Austrian paraglider Paul Guschlbauer push himself out of his comfort zone and reach new heights in his sport. Paul's career revolves around Red Bull X-Alps, a race where competitors hike, run and fly more than 1200km across the biggest mountains in the Alps. When covering brutal terrain and navigating tough conditions, Paul has to consistently evaluate his surroundings to make the right decision that gives him the best opportunity to succeed. And as host Cédric Dumont explains, this is a technique we can all adopt in our daily lives when faced with moments that challenge us. Through incorporating Cédric's exercise, we can learn how to better make objective decisions. For more, check out www.redbull.com/mindsetwinGet in touch with us @cedricdumont, @paulguschlbauer

Today we are joined by Lars Bukkehave for an episode originally recorded in April 2022. A stalwart in the world of adventure racing, Lars has raced all over the world and has the stories to prove it. Today he regales us with his origin story, how he grew into being a world-class adventure racer, and his sleep and nutrition strategies. This is one of the longer episodes of TDZ, and we could have gone even longer. Following the initial recording, Lars sent an audio file with even more information on his upcoming race directing and other events that he's planning. Be sure to stick around for that. Since recording this episode, Lars was struck with a severe case of hypothermia at Expedition Oregon and had to withdraw from the race, but then came back as a member of Team Bend Racing to win the inaugural Endless Mountains Adventure Race with a winning time of just over 110 hours this past June. He's a human Weeble Wobble (Shout out to the 70's kids out there). Not only does he love the sport, but he cares deeply about newer racers and how best to bring new people to our races. He'll most certainly be a return guest to TDZ. Sit back and enjoy!

Lindsey Heiserman probably wears more hats than anyone you know. She's a speaker, business and life coach, personal trainer, and accomplished adventure racer. For the last 15-plus years, her work has been a blend of movement and mindset. She holds a unique combination of education and skills—with an undergraduate degree in exercise science and a graduate degree in counseling and psychotherapy, as well as an additional life coaching certification, she's uniquely qualified to help her clients navigate challenges both inside and, more importantly, outside of the gym. Although her many roles might sound unrelated, they all spring from the same place—Lindsey's desire to help people feel better in their bodies, in their businesses, and in their lives. A lifelong athlete, Lindsey has completed over 100 obstacle course races, including multiple 24-hour events. And while she's always experienced joy with movement, like many of us, her motivation originally stemmed from the desire to lose weight. Lindsey's clients say she's “relentlessly positive and unabashedly real. Welcome to episode 105 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We're kicking off 2022 with an amazing guest. On the show this week we have the uber talented endurance athlete Marika Wagner. We're huge fans of her feats of endurance and we're super stoked to start off the third year of the podcast with her on the show. But first... Training UpdateIt's back to training this week and somehow we're already only 11 weeks out from ÖTILLÖ Catalina! While it definitely helps to have raced that course before, we also know what's waiting for us so it's game on as we start ramping up the training volume.ShoutoutsThis week we're shouting out the country of Belgium. They recently cracked the top ten in terms of downloads by county and we're stoked on that. Thanks for checking out the show or Hartelijk bedankt!!Feats of EnduranceThis week we have two winners of the Feats of Endurance “award.” First up is Victor Rosario for posting a workout from Puerto Rico. As mentioned before, any workout posted from Puerto Rico is an automatic selection. The other award goes to Bay area local Brian Ramirez for his Headlands run on New Years Day…where he ran by Chris on his Ninja Loop run. Check out and join our Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for Swimruns and life. This Week in SwimrunThis segment is on hiatus for the next few weeks while we give our news department some PTO. If you're missing the segment music, you can check it out here.UpdatesOur first LTBz Patreon meetup is scheduled for Saturday, January 22nd at 4PM Pacific. Got gear questions? Got race questions? Got life questions? Your Swimrun community is here for it. Not in our Patreon Community yet? Head over to patreon.com/lowtideboyz to learn more.Marika WagnerIt was so great to chat with Marika. We've been following her on IG pretty much since we launched the meme account and to call her endurance exploits impressive really doesn't do justice to how versatile of an athlete she is. She calls herself an “Adventure Racer” and honestly, that's probably the best way to describe her athletic exploits. In this interview we chatted with Marika about her endurance background, how she found Swimrun, what keeps her motivated to try new feats of endurance, and the adventures are in her future. We loved her candor and confirmed our long-standing opinion that Swimrunners are some of the best humans. We loved this conversation and know that you will too.You can follow Marika's endurance exploits on Instagram. That's it for this week's show. If you are enjoying the Löw Tide Böyz, be sure to subscribe to the show on your favorite podcast player and leave us a five-star review. You can find us on Apple Podcast, Spotify, Google Podcast, and on YouTube. You can also follow our meme page on Instagram. Email us at lowtideboyz@gmail.com with any feedback and/or suggestions. Big data shows Nature has the power to heal. Professional Adventure Racer and Founder and CEO of NatureQuant Jared Hanley joins today's episode to talk extreme endurance sport and share how his company is reshaping the way the world measures the impact nature has on our lives. A veteran of professional Expedition races Jared shares the grueling physical and mental toll the 10+ day races inflicts on athletes. A competition that puts athletes under extreme and sometimes life threatening duress, Jared explains the need to make skills like rock climbing, white water rafting and cave diving so automatic that athletes can do them under severe sleep deprivation. An avid lover of nature, Jared explains how he applies his background as a data scientist to quantify the positive impact of nature on our physiology and the health risks associated with lack of access. He explains the correlation between exposure to nature and life expectancy. What the science says is a recommended minimum in terms of personal exposure. Explains how listeners at home can measure their Nature Score and gives us an early teaser of his company's next project and how it will help enable users to hopefully improve the quality of their lives. Robyn Benincasa is an expert on leadership and team building. Her expertise comes not as a result of classroom education or a lucrative corporate career, but through decades of extreme challenges and relying on teamwork. She was part of America's first all- female fire crew, and has spent years battling blazes alongside a team. She's completed numerous adventure races around the world. From the jungles of Borneo to remote locations in Tibet, there are few places Robyn has not conquered. But just when she was at her peak, Robyn collapsed in a race. A crushing diagnosis followed, effectively ending Robyn's way of life.Rather than accept the diagnosis as an end to challenges, Robyn accepted it as a new challenge. She went on to earn a new world record and launch a non-profit to help other Survivors of medical or emotional trauma make a comeback in life. Project Athena adopts Robyn's expertise in endurance racing, teamwork, and, resilience to guide others through their challenges. Listen in as Robyn shares her stories of training with Mark Burnett and former Navy SEALS, how being fired opened up opportunity, her lessons on teamwork, and how Project Athena provides opportunities for people to change their entire life trajectories. Mountain Runner, Triathlete, Adventure Racer and Cyclist, winner of this years infamous Art O’Neill challenge which is a 55km race across country which follows Art O'Neill's historic escape from the Dublin Castle through the Dublin Mountains where Art met his Fate. Shaun was the inaugural winner of the seven Sisters skyline challenge in 2018 so we delve into the event as I know quite a few listeners have already signed up for the race this Aug, he’s also competed in OCC, CCC & TDS and is being drawn back this year again for the 108mile UTMB challenge. I’d just like to announce a competition that we are running for our 100th episode which has one of if not my most favourite Ultra Runner of all time Courtney Dauwalter, the episode is being released on the 29th Feb, it is sponsored by Excel Sports, and the winner will receive a free race entry into this years Seven Sisters event in either the 27km challenge event or the 50km skyline event both being held on the 15th Aug, I took part last year and can’t recommend this race enough, I believe that there are around 14 countries already being represented so its going to be an awesome event not to be missed.

I'm very excited to kick off Season Two of the Eat for Endurance Podcast with ultrarunner, mountaineer, adventure racer, speaker, and author, Marshall Ulrich. As an athlete, Marshall's list of accomplishments is impressive, to say the least (and still growing, too). Just to name a few: he has climbed Mount Everest, crossed Death Valley on foot (in July) a record 22 times, completed the Seven Summits all on first attempts, finished more than 100 ultramarathons averaging over 100 miles each, competed in all nine Eco-Challenge adventure races, and broke two transcontinental speed records at the age of 57 when he ran 3,063.2 miles in 52.5 days from San Francisco to New York. This last feat was the basis for his 2011 memoir, Running on Empty, which I read several years ago after meeting Marshall and highly recommend. I also thoroughly enjoyed his latest book, Both feet on the ground: Reflections from the Outside, which details his life on the farm and how it shaped his own approach to food and nutrition. Our conversation took us through a wide variety of topics, including:The disconnect between us and nature, and the role this plays on our relationship with food and health (i.e. confusion or obsession with eating the “right” foods). How being an endurance athlete means becoming an “expert in eating” Being a vegan vs omnivore (a particularly hot topic right now, especially in the endurance world)The extreme differences in fueling for his various events (e.g. climbing Mt. Everest vs Badwater vs Eco-Challenge)Becoming a role model for longevity in sport - staying active and strong through your 50s and 60sI hope you enjoy this episode and find some inspiration in our conversation! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Stefanie Bishop always grew up active from the time she could crawl. She competed in a number of different sports growing up, but it wasn't until 2009 when she read a New York Times article that would really spark something new in her life. That New York Times article was about the Death Race. In this week's episode of the podcast, Bishop talks about growing up, being recruited to gymnastics from a birthday party, how winning the Death Race turned into a job in finance, and more. She talks about why she prefers adventure racing and other extreme endurance events to short distance courses. Finally, talks about the importance of community in long events. Bishop recently won the 2016 World's Toughest Mudder and to many this was their first introduction to the endurance athlete. In our podcast, she talks about how she got into the obstacle racing world in 2010 then took a break for a few years but always had WTM on her radar. Check out this week's episode, coming out on Bishop's 34th birthday!
