In this episode of the Contested Ground podcast, Steve Kuper and Major General (Ret'd) Dr Marcus Thompson are joined by Dr Malcolm Davis, Australian Strategic Policy Institute defence strategy and capability senior analyst, to unpack the strategic shockwaves emerging from the United States' 2026 National Defense Strategy. The trio examine what Washington's shift towards an offshore balancing posture means for Australia, including renewed pressure to lift defence spending, the implications of deterrence by denial along the first island chain, and the risks of assuming unconditional US support in a rapidly deteriorating Indo-Pacific security environment. They also explore the growing assertiveness of China, the fine line between stabilisation and accommodation, and whether Australia is approaching a modern-day version of World War II's "1939 tipping point moment" that demands greater self-reliance, expanded defence industrial capacity, and difficult conversations with the Australian public. Finally, the discussion turns to force structure, autonomous systems, guided weapons, and the hard choices facing government as Australia seeks to balance immediate readiness, AUKUS, and long-term strategic resilience in an era of uncertainty. From the top of his game with multiple US National and World championship titles under his belt, to wondering if walking would ever again be an option, the journey Nick Batsch has been on over the last three years is a tough one to imagine. Years of training and top level athletic reflexes turned a landing that could have just as easily taken his life into the challenge of a lifetime, pushing Nick to work not only toward the physical demands a rebab of his type takes, but the often un thought of mental hurtles he had to overcome, not simply to live a normal life and perhaps even skydive again, but to once again stand on the top of the podium at the US Nationals. Join in on this edition with the US National CP Champion Nick Batsch and hear in surprising detail all about his continuing journey with the Lunatic Fringe.

"A pretty big turnaround," the Russian government called it. "Aligned with Russia," is how Atlanticist media is describing it. The updated US National Security Strategy is, on paper, something of a 'clean break' with the the United States' past . This week on Fat Science, Dr. Emily Cooper, Andrea Taylor, and Mark Wright explore the expanding world of telehealth in treating metabolic issues. Dr. Cooper sheds light on both the promise and pitfalls of accessing medications like GLP-1s through online platforms. The episode dives into the effectiveness of patient-provider relationships, the importance of comprehensive and personalized care, and the potential red flags in impersonal telehealth services. After listening, you'll understand the benefits of telehealth and why thoughtful, thorough medical guidance is crucial for metabolic health.Key Takeaways:Telehealth has improved accessibility and convenience for metabolic care, but not all platforms offer the same quality of support. The lack of personalized interaction and lab-based assessments in many telehealth services can pose risks to patient health.Quick, transactional telehealth models often prioritize medication sales over holistic care and ongoing patient monitoring.Comprehensive care requires detailed history-taking, follow-up, and lab work—elements often missing in mass-market telehealth.Listeners should watch for red flags such as no direct provider interaction, absence of lab testing, and subscription models tied to product sales.Personal Stories & Practical Advice:Andrea reflects on her own journey and the difference a dedicated, whole-person approach made to her health.Dr. Cooper shares her experience testing a mass-market telehealth site, exposing the superficial nature of some programs. The panel urges listeners to seek out board-certified providers and reputable telehealth organizations for genuine care.Link to US National telehealth clinics with Board Certified Obesity Medicine providers: Knownwell (non-affiliated)Resources:Connect with Dr. Emily Cooper on LinkedIn.Connect with Mark Wright on LinkedIn.Connect with Andrea Taylor on Instagram.Fat Science is a podcast on a mission to explain where our fat really comes from and why it won't go and stay away. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US bureau chief Jacob Magid and political correspondent Tal Schneider join host Jessica Steinberg for today's Daily Briefing podcast. Magid and Schneider speak about the cautious optimism of some Israeli government officials regarding renewed hostage talks, amid the arrival of US National security adviser Jake Sullivan to the region. Magid also looks at the request of Trump advisors who asked for the return of Hamas leaders to Qatar as they view the Gulf country's mediation efforts as vital to the hostage negotiations, and want the entire situation completed by the January 20 inauguration. Magid and Schneider discuss the latest in the Golan Heights and IDF activity in the buffer zone with Syria following the rebel group takeover. Several European countries asked for Israel's restraint as no one wants Israel and the rebel groups to set off on an antagonistic relationship. Finally, Schneider looks at the latest in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's criminal trial, as the prime minister claims he was never favored by any of the Israeli media that he attempted to influence, but rather received hostile coverage. For news updates, please check out The Times of Israel’s ongoing live blog. Discussed articles include: Sullivan heads to Israel for Biden administration’s likely final hostage deal push 1st hostage to return from Gaza meets Trump, urges him to do all he can to free captives Security chiefs discuss hostage deal in Cairo as Israel sees growing chances Trump aides asked Qatar to recall ousted Hamas chiefs in bid to revive hostage talks Netanyahu argues ‘hostile’ Walla coverage, telecoms reforms prove bribery claims ‘absurd’ Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts.
