Thursday afternoon means a new episode of the Real Life podcast is ready to wrap up your week. On today's podcast, the guys discussed Mark Carney at Oilers practice, Chalmers not calling the boys back, and much more. The guys kicked off the episode with a discussion about why Chalmers did not return Tyler or Baggedmilk's call when they offered him a free ticket to the Oilers game. Even though the podcast started with Chalmers ghosting the boys, they didn't get more than two seconds into the story before changing topics. The guys then discussed Prime Minister Mark Carney joining the Oilers for practice this morning and how the sight is as interesting as it was controversial for some of the fanbase. Regardless of where you sit politically, what's objectively true is how unique it is for a sitting Prime Minister to be an Oilers fan. Politicians typically jump on the bandwagon in the playoffs, but Carney genuinely seems to love this team. Will a visit from the PM help the boys against the Winnipeg Jets?Changing gears, Tyler wanted to talk about some sports conspiracies after he fell down a rabbit hole of unexplained stories in the world of sports. From Alex Mogilny not being in the Hall of Fame to the Luka Doncic trade to the Lakers to some thinking that the Sedin twins changed place at one point in their career, the stories and theories are limitless. Regardless of what you think of these theories, it certainly is fun to talk about the possibility of high-level shenanigans. Finally, the guys wrapped up the Thursday episode of Real Life with a collection of random topics, including Kanye's recent run of horrible tweets, TikTok conspiracies, Blockbuster late fees, and much more. As always, the last half of Real Life was all over the place.

The Washington Commanders turned methodical drives into scores and took advantage of turnover-prone Philadelphia to stun the Eagles 32-21 on Monday night and send them to their first loss in nine games this season. Behind Jalen Hurts, the Eagles were 8-0 for the first time in franchise history and the last team in the NFL that could make a run at Miami’s 17-0 mark in 1972 and the lone perfect season. The 2007 New England Patriots came close, going 18-0 before a Super Bowl loss. The Commanders also spoiled Pittsburgh’s 11-0 start in 2020. Hurts threw for just 174 yards. NCAAFB – Suspect caught in fatal shooting of 3 UVA FB players Authorities said a University of Virginia student and former member of the school’s football team fatally shot three current players as they returned from a field trip. The shooting set off panic and a 12-hour lockdown of the campus until the suspect was captured Monday. Students who were told to shelter in place beginning late Sunday described terrifying hours in hiding. While police searched for the gunman through the night, students sought safety in closets, dorm rooms, libraries and apartments. They listened to police scanners and tried to remember everything they were taught as children during active-shooter drills. The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. NCAAFB – Coach: Slain Virginia football players ‘were all good kids’ Three University of Virginia football players killed in an on-campus shooting are being remembered by head football coach Tony Elliott as “incredible young men with huge aspirations and extremely bright futures.” Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry were returning from a class trip Sunday night when authorities say they were killed by a fellow student. Heyward famously rallied teammates with a pep talk during a rain delay late in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series. Chicago went on to win 8-7 in 10 innings, ending a championship drought that dated to 1908. Olympics – Winter 2026 – Russian skater Valieva could miss 2026 Olympics over doping The Court of Arbitration for Sport says 16-year-old Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva faces a potential four-year doping ban which would rule her out of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo. CAS has registered an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Agency and says WADA is seeking a four-year ban to start on the date CAS makes its ruling. That would cover the next Olympics in Italy. WADA also wants Valieva to be disqualified from events including her gold-medal win in the Olympic team event in Beijing in February. Tennis – Djokovic set to be granted visa to play Australian Open Novak Djokovic is set to be granted a visa to play in next year’s Australian Open despite his high-profile deportation in January. The Australian Broadcasting Corp. says it has confirmed newspaper reports that the immigration minister has overturned Djokovic’s potential three-year exclusion period from Australia. The Australian Border Force has previously said an exclusion period could be waived under certain circumstances. Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has declined comment on privacy grounds. That means any announcement on Djokovic’s visa status for Australia would have to come from the 35-year-old Serbian tennis star. FIFA – World Cup – US Soccer uses rainbow crest in Qatar The U.S. Soccer Federation is using a rainbow version of its crest at the Americans’ World Cup training facility in Doha, Qatar. The federation normally uses a crest with blue lettering and red stripes but changed the stripes to seven different colors at the training facility, where workouts started ahead of the Americans’ World Cup opener against Wales on Nov. 21. The rainbow crest is part of the Be the Change initiative of the USSF and its players. Qatar has been criticized over attitudes towards LGBTQ fans and the treatment of migrant workers. Jeff Paterson stops by and is asked 1) is the season already lost?; and 2) is it a matter of if (not when) Bruce Boudreau gets fired? Jeff recaps another blown multi-goal lead, a second weekend loss to the Bruins, and tells us how concerned he is with Russian wingers Vasily Podkolzin and Andrei Kuzmenko. John Shannon calls HHoF induction night one of his favourite days of the year, and reflects on the magical careers of the Sedin twins and Luongo. There will be plenty of fireworks and grill marks as I take a peek at the entire sports landscape here on the latest holiday edition of the podcast. On deck: (4:44) There was plenty of wheeling and dealing in the NBA over the past week, with supermax deals handed out left and right (i.e. Nikola Jokic, Devin Booker, Zion Williamson, to name a few) but the big story was Kevin Durant requesting to be traded from the Brooklyn Nets. Who's to blame in all of this? Is it KD? The Nets? I'll have a full commentary on all of this, especially what the hierarchy of the Nets should do, if they haven't done so already, in order to keep the peace and rebuild their relationships with KD & Kyrie. The other newsworthy note in the Association was the Timberwolves trading a boatload of players and #1 picks to Utah for Rudy Gobert. Was this deal too expensive for the Timberwolves blood? Is Gobert even a good fit with this roster? I'll also share my thoughts on the Celtics shrewd deal to bring in Malcolm Brogdon from the Pacers. Although it comes with a caveat that is concerning. (31:27) We're just about at the halfway mark of the baseball season. The All-Star Break is two weeks away. The Dodgers squandered a golden opportunity for a four game sweep of the rival Padres, but San Diego saved face as they beat up closer, Craig Kimbrel. The White Sox are looking to make a push as they come off of a sweep in San Francisco with a home date with the division leading Twins. I'll tell you what's going on in the NL Central. The Mets and Braves are a week away from re-acquainting themselves during this 2022 season. The AL East is a logjam after the first place Yankees and the Astros are in another stratosphere at the moment as the hottest team in the sport as I dissect both leagues to see where we're at about 81 games into the schedule. (42:16) Wimbledon is into its second week of competition. The stunning news from the tournament was Iga Swiatek having her 37 match streak snapped against Alize Cornet on the women's side. Also, Coco Gauff has lost, leaving the possibility of Harmony Tan (who beat Serena Williams last week) to become the Cinderella at the All England Club. On the men's side, Carlos Alcaraz will not have a date with Novak Djokovic, but it's Jannik Sinner (CORRECTION: I said Skinner during the pod, not Sinner. My apologies for the error) who has that distinction. The guy who's making most of the headlines is Nick Kyrgios, who's temperament and attitude was the story of the weekend. Is he all bark and no bite? Can he make his way to the final? (48:09) Both USC & UCLA will pack their bags and join the Big 10 in 2024. What does this mean for the PAC-12? Will there be a merger of conferences down the road? Is this the beginning of the end for the sport on a whole? (53:43) The NHL Draft and free agency is upcoming. The impact is already taking place in Tampa Bay as they had to free up money and make a tough move by trading defenseman Ryan McDonagh to the Nashville Predators. I'll also get into the Class of 2022 Hall of Fame as the Sedin twins (Daniel & Henrik), Roberto Luongo and Daniel Alfredsson will be enshrined in Toronto. Why I feel none of the above are worthy of being Hall of Famers. (59:59) Branden Grace makes history by becoming the first player to win a LIV Golf Event in the US. Did anyone watch? Talked about how it all came about. Had heard his name was on the list of Cammi and Ryan Johnson and talks started from there. The more he talked with them, the more excited he got. Saw the importance and the value of the role. Likes the work and the process of taking them from the draft to the NHL. Thought this was a good opportunity to get his hands on a Stanley Cup, which he never got as a player. Talked about how he heard that his name was on the list. It’s a small hockey world. Everyone is looking for a job to prove their worth. Talked about what he will bring to this job. He was a first-round draft pick, came into the NHL and quickly figured out he wouldn’t be on the PP. Wants to help the kids establish good habits. This team has tremendous resources. Didn’t talk to anyone in the MTL organization when he was drafted by them. These days he will build a relationship with the kids right away. Talked about working with the kids while they are playing for their respective CHL teams. Has to be genuine. Talked about the advice he will give to kids. Talked about Quinn Hughes. Talked about his bond with Chris Higgins.Darren Dreger joined Matt and Blake from Denver. Talked about Game 1 of the WCF last night. Said everyone left the building a bit punch drunk. Even the Avs weren’t happy. They know they have to be better. Talked about the goals we saw in the game. For the most part, the stars showed up. It was punch, counter punch. Not minutes but seconds later. Talked about the off-side rule. Said that Ken Holland had a look in the video replay room before the media and he completely understood. Talked about the new role for the Sedin twins. Thinks that this is a solid plan. The IQ they bring is off the charts. Why wouldn’t you want them as close to players as possible, especially at the American league? Talked about Travis Green. Says that a number of teams have reached out to him. Talked about the Dallas Stars and their coaching search. Everything will fall after Barry Trotz. It is muddying things up a little bit.
