In this episode of 'The Biggest Table' podcast, I discuss the intersection of food, table gatherings, and Christian unity with guests Heather Gorman and Mark Nelson, authors of 'Lunchroom Theology, Pushing Tables Together in a Fractured World.' The conversation explores the inspiration behind their book, which uses the metaphor of a high school lunchroom to illustrate social and theological divisions. They highlight practical steps for fostering inclusive and meaningful table fellowship as modeled by Jesus, while addressing modern sociological factors contributing to division. The discussion underscores the church's role in embracing and living out the unity that Jesus prayed for, by having generous conversations, practicing hospitality, and avoiding divisive behaviors. Both guests share personal anecdotes and practical advice on how to navigate deep and sometimes uncomfortable conversations around the table, stressing that change is both possible and essential for the church to effectively extend the Kingdom of God.Mark Nelson and Heather Gorman co-authored Lunchroom Theology: Pushing Tables Together in a Fractured World. Heather Gorman (PhD, Baylor University) is Professor of New Testament at Johnson University and author of Interweaving Innocence: A Rhetorical Analysis of Luke's Passion Narrative as well as numerous journal articles and essays on the Gospels, Acts, ancient rhetoric, and reception history.Heather Gorman's faculty page. In this conversation we get to the heart of the divisions and fractures we're seeing in our society and in the church. Heather Gorman and Mark Nelson, the authors of the book "Lunchroom Theology," paint a vivid picture of the polarization all around us - the way we sort ourselves into different tables and groups, often suspicious or distrustful of those who aren't like us. But what's so compelling is how Heather and Mark point us back to the radical, subversive vision of Jesus - the way he broke down barriers, invited the unexpected to his table, and called his followers to a radical unity. They unpack how the early church struggled with this, but also found creative, improvisational ways to live it out. Ultimately, this is a conversation about recovering the imagination to see the world differently, to tell better stories, and to participate in the restoration that Jesus inaugurated. It's a call to intellectual humility, to curiosity about those who are different from us, and to a faith that is rooted in the mystery and wonder of God, not just a set of propositions. Heather and Mark offer a compelling alternative to the fear-driven, tribal mentality that so often dominates our public discourse. It's a vision of community, of neighbor-love, of pushing tables together - even when it's messy and uncomfortable. This is the kind of conversation we need more of. Join us at the table. On today's program, Village Church Pastor Matt Chandler is under fire after his church hired a man who, in the past, was convicted of child sexual abuse. That man was his father. We'll take a look. Also, Robert Morris—the Gateway Church pastor accused of abusing a young girl starting when she was 12 years old—is having his radio and tv programs canceled…and is receiving no severance after resigning from his posts. We'll have details. And, the closure of another Christian college—the Florida campus of Johnson University is shutting down after low enrollment made it no longer sustainable. But first, former Christian billionaire Bill Hwang—once one of the wealthiest evangelicals in the U.S., celebrated as part of a “new evangelical donor-class”—he now faces the possibility of life behind bars. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. We get database and other technical support from Stephen DuBarry, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. This week in the first of what will be three installments, Sandy Jones remembers Jimmy "Smut" Means, the LONG road home from Pocono, his stint with D.K. Ulrich, and going to school at Junior Johnson University, where he was the new kid in Ingle Hollow … and treated like it. We then tackle the April 3, 1980 edition of Grand National Scene. Dale Earnhardt wins his second race in a row, early in his sophomore season. The win comes at Bristol, where he'd scored the FIRST victory of his Winston Cup career the year before. Donnie Allison parts ways with Hoss Ellington, and there's speculation on who might go into the seat. Gene Granger has the scoop on David Pearson and Hoss … and yes … another feature on his friend. Gene also takes aim at ABC's coverage of the recent Atlanta event, a broadcast anchored by the legendary Al Michaels. Neil Bonnett talks about Harry Hyde, qualifying, and his quite liberal interpretation of the rulebook. Finally, there are features on Jimmy Means' "main man" … Sandy Jones … and former boat racer Bill Elswick. The time between the Old and New Testaments has been deemed by some the "400 years of silence." In reality, many texts were being written that shaped the world and mind of the New Testament authors. Dr. Heather Gorman (Professor of New Testament at Johnson University) offers a greater understanding of this "intertestamental" period by telling the story of First Maccabees (and Star Wars!). How can our engagement with these between texts shape our understanding of the biblical texts?

Today I sit down with Dr. Rafael Rodríguez, professor New Testament at Johnson University in Knoxville, TN. Rafael and I had a delightful conversation about Paul's massive tome to the churches in Rome. I'm especially thankful for our discussion because #Romans is such a sophisticated argument that I sometimes feel it's easy to get lost in the weeds and in the extraordinary amount of secondary literature written about Romans--and this is where Rafael shines as he walks us through some of the major themes and points of what is arguably Paul's greatest explanation of the #Gospel. In this episode, we start off talking about all of the traveling Coach Grinder has done, moving from program to program and leaving his mark. We also talk heavily about how he brings faith and ministry into his programs, including why and how he prays over his players. Coach Grinder views coaching a baseball team as a chance to develop young men, and allow them to grow their faith if they have already encountered it and offer a chance to encounter it for those guys who have not. He believes winning baseball games is a byproduct of focusing on growth and relationships. We also talk about the high-level speed of their practices and why that is a huge part of their success, as well as why his team competes in everything they do. Additionally, Coach Grinder and I discuss athletic directors and administrators and why his expectations of those led him to Ottawa University. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/fiob/support

Ms. Allison Elizabeth Williams, 36, of Seymour, lived a life of ministry and was a source of infectious joy to those around her. She was loyal, playful, passionate, and smart. Opinionated, yet humble. Through acts of bringing joy to others with simple gifts from the Dollar Tree or showing up for life events, Allison embodied how to live in Christ and how to be Christ to others. She first learned to be this example through the witness of her parents, Ted and Lisa. Allison was a graduate of Johnson University and served Seymour for fifteen years, eleven of those years at Reddington Christian Church. With her creativity and love for youth ministry, she joined DYM, serving thousands of youth workers around the world. As a second parent for "her kids" she always protected and pushed them to be and do better. She encouraged them to step out of their comfort zones to be witnesses, and at the end of every lesson she would say, "Carry this and teach all your friends." She now has the view for which she worked her entire life! Allison met her Savior on Monday, January 20, 2020. She was born in Knoxville, Tennessee to Ted and Lisa (Jarrell) Williams. She is also survived by her; brother, Nathan (Desiree) Williams; nieces, Fiona and Elsa; aunts, Julia (Chris) Warren and Ruth Jarrell; cousins, Kevin Morris, Mary (Robert) Park, and Paul (Beth) Jarrell as well as several great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Roy and Annette Jarrell; paternal grandparents, Theodore and Florence Williams; and uncle, Robb Jarrell. How does social-memory theory change how we think about the New Testament? In Rafael Rodríguez's Jesus Darkly, the Jesus that emerges from the shadows is surprisingly bright and relevant.
