Retired Navy SEAL Capt. Ryan Croley founded the Warrior For Life Fund (WFLF) in 2012 after never skating or picking up a hockey stick until his mid-thirties, creating an opportunity for veterans, active duty service members, and families to meet and compete on the ice no matter the skill level, ability…or disability. Frank Simonetti played for the Boston Bruins from 1984-1988, and as a Bruins Alumni continues to help raise funds and awareness for people in need through organizations like WFLF. With some pre-game smack talk for the tied series between the Bruins Alumni and WFLF Teams and a conversation about the therapeutic bonds on and off the ice, Dr. Ron talks with Ryan and Frank at Home Base, overlooking the USS Constitution – an appropriate backdrop for a Bostonian Bruin, and a Navy Veteran.Thank you Ryan Coley ,of the Warrior For Life Fund and Frank Simonetti of the Boston Bruins Alumni for your service on and off the ice and for connecting people through the great sport of hockey. Thanks for visiting us at Home Base and for all your work in bringing the Bruins-Military worlds together for some great therapy and great times. Special thanks to colleague Dr. Joe Bonvie who has been bringing sport, psychology and service together with passion for many years.Make sure to check out the BFit Challenge that will take place January 28th 2024, or sign up virtually for January 19th-26th, and the Home Base BFitTeam!Ryan's wife Annie Tamburello is a SLP and Brain Injury Specialist who treats veterans, servicemembers and civilians with TBI who need cognitive rehab. Monica Quimby reconciles the life of a former anatomy professor and former Miss Wheelchair Maine with being the current goon on the US Women's Sled Hockey Team, striving for the sports inclusion in the Paralympics. For those of you who don't know, the goon is the intimidator, the enforcer and generally the hardest hitter on the team. Monica is that and a huge advocate for the sport. The next five years of her life are mapped out in color coded post-it notes. She journals daily and re-evaluates every three months. This is a woman on a mission.
Josh Sweeney grew up in Phoenix, AZ, joining the Marines directly after high school. He deployed to Afghanistan with 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines as a Scout Sniper in 2009 where he was injured by an IED while on patrol. He sustained severe injuries to his legs and arms resulting in the amputation of both legs above the knees and multiple hand and arm surgeries. While undergoing rehabilitation in San Antonio, TX at the Center for the Intrepid he began playing adaptive sports and realized he was still an athlete despite his injuries. He is a 2014 Paralympic Gold Medalist in the sport of Sled Hockey and was a member of the USA Nordic Skiing Paralympic team in 2022. Josh also competes in Para Triathlon where he was ranked internationally in 2019 winning a World Cup and USA Nationals. He most recently began competing in handcycling, pushing the gravel cycling initiative of getting more adaptive bikes in races and being the first handcyclist to complete the 105-mile course at Rebeccas Private Idaho. On top of all his athletic achievements, he enjoys helping the adaptive sports community by making custom equipment that is needed to solve problems they face
Pete Rizzo spoke with Digital Media Director Paul Cuthbert about what the environment is like when going to a Long Island Rough Riders' sled hockey game as well as how the sport has impacted the lives of many people across the area.
The 2002 US Sled Hockey Team only qualified for the Paralympics because they were the host country. Goalie Manny Guerra represented the last line of defense. Defend and score goals they did, all the way to the Gold Medal. No one gave them a chance, but them. That's turning perception of disability upside down.
With the standings still up in the air, we don't have a clear picture of who is top of the league. Right now Boston and Vegas are up there. This week we touch on a couple Boston Bruins stories featuring Connor Clifton and Jim Montgomery. We start with an Evander Kane update and we break down the St. Louis Blues. Dominic Tiano (@DominicTiano) tweeted about trading Derek Forbort...we discuss. We have a discourse regarding the best goalie in Boston, currently it would be Corrine Schroeder of the Pride. Thomas Freel wants other players to hate him, which reminds us of a couple other NHL players. Tkachuk suspended, along with the Toronto Six head coach. Finally, there is the Sled Hockey Classic happening November 17-20 in Anaheim, California. So much hockey related content so listen and tell us what you think. Enjoy the Show!
At the age of ten, a boating accident led to the unthinkable for a young athlete: the amputation of his right leg. His parents showed him empathy but also set his perspective for the future helping him believe he could be an Olympic Champion. Today, Jack Wallace is a 2X Paralympic Gold Medalist and 2X World Champion in Sled Hockey. He is also setting his sights on Sprint Kayak for the Paris 2024 Olympics. When he is not competing or training, he is a mentor/counselor at Camp No Limits, which introduced him to sled hockey as a child. His mindset is all about maximizing experiences and his mantra is, “You get out what you put in.” @jwallace_usa

In 2004, Noah Grove developed bone cancer in his left leg that resulted in an amputation. He was only five years old. Fast forward eight years later and he finds himself at the adaptive sports program at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, a Move United member organization based in Baltimore where he discovered the sport of sled hockey. In 2016, after two years on the development team, Noah was named to the national team, which of course won the Gold Medal against Canada in an epic game at the 2018 Winter Paralympics. Noah and the team hope to repeat that performance at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing in March. Outside the national team, Noah has played with the USA Warriors and is completing his bachelor's degree at Towson University.

Lera was born in Russia with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, a severe condition that affects joints in her legs. She was adopted and moved to the US at nearly two years old, where she used forearm crutches as her main form of mobility. When she grew into her teenage years, she had been told life would get harder in the future, with mobility getting more restrictive for her. At 14 years old she decided to double-amputate both of her legs above the knee. It wasn't long before Lera was introduced to adaptive sports! Lera was selected to play for the 2019-2020 women's US national sled hockey team after only two years of playing the sport, Lera is making her mark in the sport and is hoping to help get woman's Sled Hockey a Paralympic sport (like the males is!). Lera has ambitions of competing in the Paralympic's at Nordic Skiing! On top of this Lera also competes in Hand Cycling and Adaptive Surfing! To follow Lera's journey on instagram follow - LERA_0415
As Blaise is making website changes, he's dusting off some old chats. In March, 2014, he taped a show with Sled Hockey player Joe Slaninka and writer John Evans. Both show how being disabled allows them to contribute in completely different ways. What do you think?
Lera Doederlein was 14 when she underwent amputation of her legs to ultimately help improve her mobility and gain some independence. Within six months, she would give sled hockey a try. She now plays for the San Diego Ducks as well as the National Women's Sled Hockey Team. But recently, multi-sport Paralympic medalist Oksana Masters also encouraged her to give Nordic skiing a try. She now finds herself also training and competing with the U.S. Paralympic Nordic Ski Team.

The Heart Of Sports with guest talking Sled Hockey - 4/22/17 by The Heart of Sports w Jason Springer & Jeff Cohen
Born without tibia bones, and causing him to have both of his legs amputated by the time he was 10 months old, Josh Pauls does not know the meaning of the words “give up.” He played all manner of sports growing up until he found his true passion and love in the game of ice hockey. Josh took up the game of sled hockey at a very early age and quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a member of the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team. He’s competed in a number of National competitions, bringing medals home for his country. Most notably, the 23-year-old has already made 2 Paralympic teams. In 2010 he travelled to Vancouver, Canada and in 2014 he ventured to Sochi, Russia. Both trips to the Games, he helped his team to victory as they won the gold. Josh Pauls is a legendary athlete and true inspiration for anyone looking to chase his or her own dreams. I am so glad for the opportunity to interview him. It was an honor to speak with such a driven individual and I hope that you enjoy my talk with the incredible Josh Pauls.
Joyce welcomes Dan McCoy, 2014 United States Paralympic Gold Medalist for the Sled Hockey Team to the show. Dan will discuss his lifelong love for the sport and how he took that commitment to a new level to reach his goal to win the Gold Medal in 2014. He will share how reaching his goals has improved his confidence and impacted his life.
Joshua Sweeney started playing hockey in middle school and then played for Ironwood High School in his hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. He joined the United States Marine Corps upon his graduation in 2005 to support his country and travel the world. In October of 2009 while serving in Afghanistan Josh was severely injured by an improvised explosive device. Due to this horrific injury, both of Joshua's legs had to be amputated above the knee. While undergoing intense rehab, Josh gravitated back to the sport he loved. Having been a hockey player, friends like Rico Roman, also a military serviceman injured after a bomb blast, encouraged and recruited Josh to play Sled Hockey for Team USA as part of his rehabilitation. Not only did Josh join Team USA, he made the 2014 Olympic team and scored the only goal in the Gold Medal Game versus the Russian Sled Hockey Team in Sochi, earning Josh and his team a Gold Medal. Now in his third year on the team, Josh is proud to represent his country and wear the Team USA jersey as he embraces the present moment, but also looks towards the future for the next journey...another Gold Medal. Josh is also a Hockey Coach in his local community.
