Every hockey fan knows how it always ends for the Vancouver Canucks — no Stanley Cup — but Ed Willes digs in the corners to poke at the why, with a wry perspective. The veteran journalist (Regina Leader-Post, The Province) presents a case study, with novelistic detail, about the West Coast NHL franchise. Weaving a thread — one of instability at the top — through the history (and prehistory) of the team, Willes explains why the Canucks have fallen short of winning the Stanley Cup, but have never been boring across five-plus decades of torment. Relying on firsthand research and contemporary accounts from fellow Vancouver sports journalists, Willes provides painstaking details about the life-arcs of stars such as Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin, Pavel Bure, Markus Näslund, and Todd Bertuzzi. The author also playfully teases out the franchise's many what-ifs. Willes is also author of “The Rebel League: The Short and Unruly Life of the World Hockey Association” (2005) and “End Zones and Border Wars: The Era of American Expansion in the CFL” (2013).
The changes aren't just on the roster, as the Canucks announced on Wednesday that Yogi Švejkovský was promoted to assistant coach of the NHL club. Daniel and Henrik Sedin were also promoted and will be given more on-ice responsibilities with both the Canucks and Abby Canucks. We also found out that Ian Cole will be testing the free-agent market. The Canucks suffered a disappointing 5-1 loss to the Florida Panthers on a night they honoured Hall of Famers Roberto Luongo, Henrik Sedin, and Daniel Sedin. More importantly, Thatcher Demko suffered an injury in the first period. Hopefully it's not too serious!
Another day, another podcast. The Vancouver Canucks are back in action on Thursday night as the Florida Panthers come to town. The Canucks will celebrate Daniel and Henrik Sedin being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame while Roberto Luongo is also celebrated with his Panthers in town. They guys preview the game, chat about changes to the lineup, discuss the goalies and talk about what they want to see in the game. Mike McKenna of Daily faceoff joins the show for the goalie chat as well as his thoughts on Luongo and the Sedins. Faber was out in Abbotsford last night and spoke with Danila Klimovich and Christian Wolanin. He also chatted with Abbotsford head coach Jeremy Colliton about Klimovich's development. Aidan and Braeden discuss the Canucks week of games and the Hockey Hall of Fame weekend for Daniel and Henrik Sedin and Roberto Luongo!
Daniel & Henrik Sedin joined the pod! The twins talked highlights of the Hockey Hall of Fame weekend, reflected on the journey from the Swedish Elite League to being elite in the NHL, spoke on their chemistry with former linemate Alex Burrows, and discussed an NHL'er they always wanted to play with. Plus, ‘Hank and Danny' discuss their current role with the Vancouver Canucks, and the importance of teaching players to use their teammates rather than being too individualistic. In Headlines, the guys talk Alex Edler's questionable hit on Connor McDavid; what McDavid's skill does to defenders and why it should have been a suspendable play. Goaltending is a hot topic as Canucks' Thatcher Demko's numbers rank amongst the league's worst, and the Buffalo Sabres shaky goaltending tandem is considered as part of the reason they've struggled lately. Former NHL goalie Scott Darling's stand-up comedy career takes some heat as Darling ripped into the city of St. Louis. Kris Abbott joined the podcast from Betano's headquarters in Greece. The World Cup is around the corner and Canada's chances of getting out of the group stage were discussed. This week's NFL picks centre around the Vikings and Cowboys as Ray & Dregs are banking on the Cowboys rebounding, and ‘Abbs' has Justin Jefferson following up his ridiculous catch and making an impact on Sunday. A day after the Colorado Avalanche hoisted the Stanley Cup, the news of three former Canucks headlining the Hockey Hall of Fame class of 2022 comes out, as Daniel & Henrik Sedin will be joined by former teammate Roberto Luongo, and fellow Swede Daniel Alfredsson as this years inductees to the hall. The show wraps with a final look back at the Stanley Cup final/playoffs, while mapping out the timeline on what lies ahead for Vancouver this offseason. Rink Wide is presented by Able Auctions.
