You'd be hard pressed to find a podcast that has all of the below as I deliver everything that's happening in sports. On deck: (2:59) I still can't wrap my head around a player in professional team sports, signing a contract for $700 million dollars. That's what the Dodgers paid prized free agent, Shohei Ohtani over the next ten years. I'll break down was this deal worth it? Is he worth it? Will he live up to it? There's so much to unpack when it comes to a record breaking signing like this, with the magnitude and ramifications that come along with it. (16:17) There are four more weeks left of the NFL regular season. As we come down the homestretch, the possibility of intrigue and drama is forthcoming. The first storyline of yesterday is the Chiefs losing when it looked like they would've had an enormous win, but an offsides on the offense overturned a late touchdown lateral from Travis Kelce, has the Chiefs headed into a postseason which will lead them on the road for the first time in the Andy Reid-Patrick Mahomes era. Then there are the Eagles. They've been scuffling the last couple of weeks as they were beaten by the Cowboys last night in a 30-13 loss and have dropped from the #1 seed in the conference to #5 as of today. What does this mean for the defending NFC champs as they try to regroup and make a push back up the standings? It's a log jam in the middle of both conferences as they jockey for playoff positioning as I'll uncover all that happened in the league yesterday, bring you up to speed on the latest in the sport as the intensity will ratchet up as we get through the back half of the NFL schedule. (42:45) I'll mention another big win by Army as they had a goal line stand to stave off Navy in the closing seconds of their game on Saturday. Your Heisman Trophy winner of 2023 is LSU QB Jayden Daniels beating out Michael Penix Jr. for the best player in college football. (44:39) The Inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament and Cup Final is in the books. From my experience, it was lackluster and didn't generate a whole lot of buzz and attention as the Lakers are the first ever to win in this type of setting. Is this meaningful for an organization that's all about championships in June than December? Now we can move on with the season as the Christmas schedule is on the horizon and the return of Grizzlies guard, Ja Morant as he's scheduled to come back in about ten days or so. Will they rebound from a dreadful start? Or will they continue to play below average? (52:55) On the ice, the Los Angeles Kings NHL record road winning streak at 11 games went by the wayside in New York over the weekend with losses to the Islanders & Rangers. Also, former Kings goalie Jonathan Quick played against his former team last night for the first time as the latter NY team won 4-1. Plus, all else that's happening throughout the league (including one time NHL player, Tony Granato fighting cancer) as I'll discuss some recent surprises and disappointments over the past week. (56:46) I'll send well wishes out to tennis great, Chris Evert, as she's battling cancer for a second go round. (57:32) The latest player to make the jump to the LIV Golf League is #3 player in the world, Jon Rahm. Is there a lot of concern on the PGA side as they lose out on another key figure in the sport? Tony Granato's accolades and accomplishments in hockey are remarkable. A highest level champion of the game in every way at college, NHL and Olympic levels, Tony is recognized as one of the great teammates, competitors and leaders in the game. As head coach of the Badgers, Tony continues to positively impact countless lives each year. He joined SGG, where we discussed: 1. The shared passion for hockey among the Granato siblings. “NHL games” in the family basement. Core values and love developing in the basement. 2. Coaching principles “come from that basement.” 3. Benefits of free play. Learning about leadership and how to be a teammate. 4. Learning about courage and perseverance from his sister Cammi. “She fought through lots of barriers and obstacles.” 5. Learning from his brother Donny about overcoming hard things. 6. Learning about the core values of individuals that his team recruits. 7. One of Tony's bell cows (models): Bob Johnson – “His enthusiasm and passion for hockey was what I thought it should be. He brought that spirit to wherever he was.” “His style was unique back then. Coaches were hard-nosed and tough. Stand-offs. Screamers and yellers…Badger had the opposite. He loved and appreciated players for who they were.” 8. Another bell cow: his dad. “He didn't know hockey very well…But what I learned from him was love and care for one another. Respect and care for each other and the game.” 9. Positive mindset. Taking positive things from other players. 10. “I don't want to be respected because I was a good player. I want to be respected because I was a good teammate.” 11. Personality of a team. “It has to be a natural thing.” 12. “Great character” vs. “great characters” in the game of hockey. 13. Values/principles of his program: work ethic; passion/love for the game and people. 14. “When you're appreciated, you're willing to go through the wall for somebody.” 15. Differences in international models of sport and development. 16. US Hockey's new model for developing the game. 17. European focus on tactical and skill work. 18. Talent capitalization. 19. Starting points in leadership development: Core values. Compassion. Relationships. 20. “The part I've enjoyed most about my journey in sport is the fact that I've been able to share it with my brothers and sisters and dad and mom. We're all connected by sport.” 21. Cody Royle is the Head Coach of AFL Team Canada, the men's national team for Australian Rules Football. He was born and raised in Australia, but has lived in Canada for over a decade now. Cody has spent the last number of years researching, interviewing, and writing about leadership, culture, and performance. As a result he is the author of two books on these subjects, Where Others Won't and The Tough Stuff. In addition he has his own podcast titled, Where Others Won't, where he has interviewed the likes of Joe Dumars, Adam Grant, Patti McCord, Michael Gervais, James Kerr, Rasmus Ankersen, Tony Granato and Peter DeBoer. Our discussion with Cody validated a lot of what our experiences and assumptions have been about coaching. Cody provided both anecdotal as well as empirical evidence to support the concept that coaches need to be high performers themselves, which in turn allows for their athletes to achieve peak performance. This self-care included nutrition, sleep, fitness, and most importantly in having someone to work with, a listening partner, who is outside of the inner circle who has no judgement, and is totally impartial. Tony Granato is the head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers' men's hockey program. He played fourteen seasons in the NHL with the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, and San Jose Sharks, where he was best known as a prolific scorer and key member of the Kings team that made a run to the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals. Tony served as head coach of the United States men's national ice hockey team at the 2018 Winter Olympics, and assistant coach at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
