James “Kodi” Kodrowski (Alabama-Huntsville '01) is an entrepreneur, and at 45, plays professional hockey for the Singapore National Team. After starting in the oil and gas industry, Kodi built a life in Singapore, where he now runs a financial services firm. He was vital in the formation of the team in Singapore and is the current president of the Singapore Ice Hockey Association (SIHA). Kodi is also representing Singapore in the 2025 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship happening in Querétaro, Mexico, from April 27 – May 3, 2025. He joined The ATO Show from the ice rink for his interview. Kodi grew up in New Jersey and started playing hockey on a frozen pond behind his house with cousins and friends. He played junior A hockey in Montana before walking on to the Division I team at the University of Alabama-Huntsville, where he studied engineering. Though Kodi didn't arrive at college with any knowledge of fraternities, he found himself drawn to the people in ATO. They were academically serious, involved in community outreach, and committed to athletics—qualities that aligned with Kodi's values. He attended leadership conferences and met fellow members. After graduation, Kodi accepted a role with an international oil company because of one pitch: “We'll pay to fly you around the world.” Eventually, he settled in Singapore after meeting his now-wife. There, he transitioned out of the oil industry and into entrepreneurship, starting in restaurants (a nod to his mother's dream of owning one), and later building a financial services company, Right Choice Capital Group.Today, Right Choice operates in Singapore and the Philippines, providing business loans to small and mid-sized enterprises. The company has grown into a group with a technology arm and a stake in a small bank. Kodi is also deeply engaged in advocacy work through his businesses, promoting financial literacy, healthy lifestyles, and support for underprivileged families.Kodi was instrumental in forming the Singapore National Hockey team. He began by playing casually in Singapore and volunteering to help run the local hockey association. Eventually, he took an active role in helping the association gain local recognition from Singapore's sports authority. After local recognition, Kodi led the process of applying for and securing membership with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). This membership was necessary for Singapore to compete in international tournaments and officially field national teams. Once recognition was in place, Kodi helped create the men's national team. He coached the team for the first few years, and in 2016, when he was granted citizenship in Singapore, he was invited to return to the team as a player. He had to lose 20 pounds to keep up with his teammates who are half his age.

The book showcases the unique path each of these individuals has taken to land in their current roles, the challenges they've faced in their careers and the decisions that have led them and their teams to the pinnacle of the sport. Custance got his start in hockey by covering the Atlanta Thrashers for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and joined ESPN in 2011 as a National Hockey writer. In 2017, he joined The Athletic and has played a pivotal role in growing the company into a global sports brand that today serves over 11 million subscribers. Listen as he shares key lessons learned from hockey's top builders, the traits that all great leaders have in common, and future GM's to watch out for.

Oh man - JFK has been dead for a while now but he keeps bringing the hits - as least presidentially phone call wise! The date is March 13, 1963. After reading about the devastating loss of the US Hockey Team to that most neutral of countries, Sweden, JFK picks up the phone and dials his good friend David L. Hackett, who is in charge of all things sporty for the president. JFK goes off about the loss of the hockey team in a most politically incorrect and - let’s face it , “unwoke” - way as possible. But you didn’t come to hear us write about this - why don’t you have a listen for yourself? This episode features Pistol Pete Friesen an extremely accomplished performance professional with a background in physical therapy and strength and conditioning as his foundation. He is currently the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the United States Women’s National Hockey program. Peter spent 21 years with the Carolina Hurricanes as the team’s Head Athletic Trainer and Strength and Conditioning Coach and he has been in practice for nearly 40 years. In addition to his work with professional teams, Friesen has been associated with the Canadian Olympic and International programs for the last 30 years, including serving as the Head Trainer for Canada’s gold medal-winning team during the 2004 World Championships. This episode features Reg Grant who has been the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the New York Rangers Hockey Club of the National Hockey league since 2002 and currently serves as the President of the Strength and Conditioning Association of Professional Hockey. Prior to his work in the National Hockey league, Reg served in the same capacity with Concordia University in Montreal and was also a lecturer in the Exercise Science department. Reggie’s quiet and unassuming leadership in hockey have helped shape the profession in the sport over the course of the last fifteen years. He has been involved in the transition into technology and more organized performance systems in the sport, and he leads by example through character and care of the athlete. Reg is a dedicated father of three with his wife Natalie, and one of the many reasons I asked him on leave your mark is because he has been able to navigate the difficult and demanding world of professional sport while continuing to be the father I know he strives to be.

This week we talk to Lilian Du Plessis and Marizen Marais from South Africa’s ladies national hockey team. They share some of their experiences as sportswomen representing South Africa internationally. Support networks are emphasised as enablers, ranging from family, friends and fans to institutional structures like universities that flexibly accommodate the demands of a sporting career with a student’s academic obligations. They remark on some of the non-tangible dynamics of team sports which contribute to building successful teams, and the need for greater profiling of sportswomen to mainstream women’s sport in its own right. They share insights into what inspires them and correspondingly dispense their own words of advice. Tune in for more

I'm trying something new this week - I'm bringing on an honest to goodness friend. Someone I've known for years, in a non-gaming/podcasting/diabetes blogging capacity. I know, weird isn't it? I called up my friend Greg to talk about life, ferrets and lots and lots of Hockey. With the playoffs coming up, there was a lot to get to. Enjoy.
