Nearly a year after Olga Sharypova publicly accused tennis star Alexander Zverev of repeated physical and emotional abuse during their relationship, the ATP announced this week that it is opening an investigation into (one of the) accusations, which Zverev has repeatedly denied in blanket terms. Ben, who has interviewed Sharypova and investigated the story for both Racquet and Slate, is joined by Mary Carillo and Jessica Luther to discuss the accusations and their impact on the sport. What took so long for the ATP to act, and why is their scope limited to Shanghai 2019? Should we have faith in the ATP to do a proper investigation? What does an investigation need to do the job correctly? How important is Sharypova's continued participation and cooperation? How has tennis dealt with the cloud over the sport in the past year? Why are tennis broadcasters so reluctant to discuss difficult topics? What to make of the select input from other players? And more. Thank you again for the incredible support for NCR we've received on the NCR Patreon which has powered us into our TENTH(!) ad-free season! Please consider joining in as we bring you the best shows we can this year! And thank you to the many listeners who have already given their support! (And thank you to G.O.A.T. backers J O'D, Pam Shriver, and Nicole Copeland!)
Indian Wells is underway, in autumn, after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus, but the big story this week is the ATP's revelation that they've begun an investigation into the abuse allegations against Alexander Zverev. It's a year or so too late, but it's a big step nonetheless. That's the theme of this episode -- steps, mostly in the right direction, as small and plodding as they might be. We also talk about some recent results, persistent vaccine hesitancy among tennis players, the WTA's race to its new Finals site in Guadalajara, and the ATP's survey of players on their attitudes toward LGBTQ issues. 1:30 Cute results: Muguruza wins Chicago; both she and Jabeur get closer to the WTA Finals 9:25 Kim Clijsters' comeback continues 13:10 Ruud works on his hardcourt bona fides; Sinner wins title #4 in his young career 19:30 Previewing Indian Wells: where have all the top boys gone 26:50 The ATP announces that it has begun an investigation into the Olya Sharypova accusations -- why was Laver Cup not mentioned in the press release? Oh, and that injunction doesn't mean what AZ thinks it means 37:00 Mary Carillo's decision to quit her Laver Cup broadcasting gig -- why we need prominent people to take a stand 44:30 Aryna Sabalenka - positive for COVID, out of Indian Wells 47:10 Will the Australian Open be off-limits for the unvaccinated? 58:30 Remember that gay survey players mentioned at the US Open? While there was little doubt who would come out victorious, it was a bit surprising how dominate Team Europe was in its conquest of Team World at the fourth edition of the Laver Cup in Boston. Aldwin and Jason talk through the weekend that was at the Laver Cup, from players in tuxes to the full fledged spectacle meant for television and to attract more casual tennis fans. With Team Europe making Team World Its... you know what... for the fourth time, is a format shake up in store for 2022? The guys discuss Mary Carillo's decision to step away from presenting at the Laver Cup for fear of being complicit in not giving voice to the assault allegations that continue to follow Sascha Zverev. The always dangerous Kontaveit takes out Sakkari for her 2nd title in 2021, while Hurkacz wins his third title of the year in Metz. Watch out for Kwon Soonwoo, the Korean player who secured his first title for a player from that country in 18 years... the guys pick him as one to watch.
We dive in deep to the legendary commentator's decision to resign from her commentary duties with the Laver Cup this past weekend. You'll hear her explain why with regard to the domestic abuse allegations against Alex Zverev, and why that decision, and others in her career, have been so important to her, and have also cost her work. Quick note from Mike: This was a difficult pod to record for me personally. Mary is as authentic as it can get, and it made me a) realize some of my own shortcomings in that department, while also b) inspiring me to find my own path forward in the same regards when it comes to journalism and authenticity. “In a performance so casual it was chilling, Safin announced himself as the game's next big thing by dismantling the best player ever.” Those were the words of S.L. Price in Sports Illustrated after 20-year-old Marat Safin beat Pete Sampras to win the US Open in 2000, a story we tell on this edition of Tennis Re-Lived. Why did Chris Clarey think Safin would be a future World No.1 from the moment he saw him? What did Yevgeny Kafelnikov think of Safin when they first met at the Davis Cup? Why was Safin the ideal guy to be front and centre of the ATP's ‘New Balls Please' campaign? And how did a coaching change in April 2000 help Safin to rediscover his best form after a glut of bad results at the start of the year? Turning to New York, how much of a contender was Safin going into the tournament? In what way did he struggle in the opening rounds? And why did he need to borrow some socks from Jeff Tarango? We hear from Mary Carillo in the commentary box about what made Safin's performance in the final so special and Paul Annacone in the coaching box about the moment he knew Sampras had a problem. Afterwards, we reflect on what happened next in Safin's career, with Marat himself explaining the pressure he felt to win a second Grand Slam title, which eventually came in Australia in 2005, and the injuries which ended his career. Should Safin be considered an underachiever? And in what way did he leave his mark on the sport beyond his results? So that's it for tennis at the Tokyo Olympics. In what way did Alexandr Zverev play pretty much the perfect match to win gold against Karen Khachanov? What would you label a group of athletes responsible for the majority of medals for the most decorated nation in the last 2 Olympics? Winners. A group who has fought for over a century to go from 2% of Olympic Athletes to 49%? Trailblazers. And what if this same group was routinely cast as less capable, exciting, profitable and valuable athletes? We're talking about the American women and women in the Olympics. For being incredible athletes and so much more, there is one label that fits better than most: Champions. Hear our conversation with Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger on how sports and the games are changing from their unique perspective as female Olympians, spouses of female athletes, activists and mothers. Mary Carillo tells the story of how Wilma Rudolph's resolve took her from childhood leg braces to Olympic track stardom and civil rights activism. It was a sad day at Roland Garros on Monday as Naomi Osaka's stand against mandatory press conferences ended with her withdrawal from the tournament, posting an eloquent statement that cited not wanting to be a distraction as well as mental health struggles that have included long bouts of depression. To discuss this somber news, how this impasse arrived, and what if anything could have been handled differently, Mary Carillo of NBC Sports joins Ben after having been on-air on NBC when the news broke. After the mental health discussion, we discuss the media ecosystem of tennis, which is under scrutiny from all sorts of corners, and also what press conferences are all about. When Jim Courier beat Andre Agassi in the 1991 French Open final, it wasn’t just his first Grand Slam title, it wasn’t just a win which would set him on his way to dominating the sport for the next two years, it was also a sweet moment of retribution against an old roommate from the Nick Bollettieri Academy who had been tipped for greatness ahead of him. On this episode, with the help of Mary Carillo and Courier’s coaches at the time, Jose Higueras and Brad Stine, we tell that story. What was life like at the Bollettieri Academy? Why was Agassi favoured over Courier? How did Higueras and Stine develop Courier’s game to turn him into a champion? What happened for Stine to confront Courier in a car park in Rome prior to Roland Garros? In what way did Stine’s one-year-old daughter play a part in helping Courier win a five-setter in round three? And how did Courier’s tactical switch during a rain delay change the course of the final? We also discuss the narrative that Courier got to the top through hard work rather than talent, the reasons why his results fell away quite suddenly, and his life after tennis. Plus, with this final falling right in the middle of the Lost Law Years, and playing an integral part in David’s discovery of tennis, you can expect plenty of 90s nostalgia from David. In this episode we travel back four years to bask in the wonder that was the 2017 Australian Open. There was so much to cover (hence the length of this show) from shock defeats for Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, exciting runs from Dan Evans and Jo Konta, the re-emergence of Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, controversy surrounding Nick Kyrgios, and ultimately a throwback finals weekend which saw Serena defeat Venus and Roger defeat Rafa. We react to clips from the daily pods, get Mary Carillo's take, and consider the lasting significance of the tournament.
