Shutter Circle's main core value will always be community over competition. When the team started out there was a lot of gatekeeping in the industry, and they wanted to be that change. There are so many wedding photography/videography workshops out there, but seem to only target established businesses. Shutter Circle wanted to close that gap, to help share their knowledge with beginners trying to get into the industry. Seasoned wedding photographers - Nik, Luke & Kieran have 25+ years of combined experience under their belts, and want to provide a community of like-minded peers where asking questions is actively encouraged and providing a support network in an otherwise lonely industry. In August 2023, the Shutter Circle team set up a facebook group that has now grown to over 1500 active members. In that group people feel safe to ask questions, and utilise the free resources and helpful tips that they share. Shutter Circle quickly identified the pain points within the industry and wanted to help other photographers and videographers connect and share work with each other. Through the use of their new second shooter portal (launching Spring 2024!) users will be able to filter search criteria to find the perfect second shooters for their upcoming weddings, and apply for jobs. The portal will remove the overwhelming process of looking for second shooters on Facebook, and trawling through the comments of people who may not necessarily fit the style or brand that you're after. Users will be able to make their own profile, list their equipment, price and shooting style. There will also be a review system in place for both parties - meaning seconds can review the main photographer for things like; Did they pay on time? Did they return SD cards?

This week we sit down with one of the most well-known, influential, and, at times, controversial figures of the Aesthetic industry, Josh Davis, BSN,RN or as we all know him, Tox Josh! From his start in rural Tennessee to music, trauma nursing, and now Aesthetics, Josh has trail-blazed his own way from simple beginnings to superstar status. But things aren't always what they seem. Behind that larger-than-life persona is a man who has fought his way through incredible challenges to not just survive, but to turn those messes into a metamorphosis. Since battling through a life-altering complication with filler just last year that was extremely serious, he's reemerged as a new Josh- one who is focused on his own mental health, using his platform to bring awareness and advocacy, and sharing his journey to help others do the same. There was a time when most people thought of Josh as nothing more than a social media influencer. Can he really inject? Is he just a personality? While he was logging 9-10 hours a day of screen time to cater to his growing follower count, he was also running a successful business and delivering high-quality patient outcomes. For those of us watching, it became more about what kind of tea he might spill and less about his skillset as a bona-fide injector who has trained alongside some of the biggest names in our industry. Over the years, he's taken the stage at multiple conferences for live injections, conducted trainings and programs across the country, been a guest injector at well-known clinics, and become a KOL for industry partners who align with his value system. He's quieted the doubters and proven that there's more to him than what you see on Instagram. During his meteoric rise to industry fame, he was also busy building a successful medspa that also experienced rapid growth and change. He started small at Davis Aesthetics then traded up to Whisper Wood – a traditional, Tennessee suburban-approved med spa that benefitted from Josh's notoriety, growing quickly in parallel. He soon found out that a growing business means more time spent working on the business and less time doing the things he loves- treating patients, being involved outside the practice, training and. managing his high-profile brand. He made the decision to downsize and get back to what he loves- in addition to aesthetic treatments, he's created a unique experience that is about more than just outer beauty. It combines his love of non-traditional treatments like reiki (he's a certified healer!), human design, massage and more into the medspa environment. This exodus into the eccentric was too much for some- 30% of his patients didn't make the move from Whisper Wood- it had nothing to do with skillset and everything to do with optics. But as Josh often does, he turned that challenge into a triumph by using that experience to attract patients who better align with the holistic experience he's building. Instagram Josh Version 2.0 has traded his call outs and controversy for a focus on mental health, healing, and being a force for positive change in the industry. He coined “Community Over Competition” not so many years ago, and while that message has been muddled and misused over time, it's something he still believes in – you are only in competition with yourself. But now more than ever, it's apparent he knows you can't run a marathon at full speed. Nobody can. With a new book launching in January, a faculty position with the vendors he wants to work with, a thriving practice that is the right amount of business and pleasure, he's standing on top of his mountain going in to 2024. Like any metamorphosis, the journey never stops, and we'll all be watching! As Josh says….in a field of horses, be a unicorn, and he's certainly one-of-a-kind! My take on Community > Competition in the Fitness Industry? Sometimes, it's bullshit. Stay with me: I don't think it should be. In fact, I think Community Over Competition is the thing that makes group fitness magic. It's what quiets the ego, centers our clients/riders, and lifts everyone up.It moves our entire industry forward and therefore helps more people have the lifechanging impact we know is possible through group fitness. But sometimes, people use it as a slogan for a shirt without actually embodying what it MEANS to say, Community>Competition.Or, we ourselves can slide into competing with our own team, being passive-aggressive when riders/clients share they're going to another studio, or fail to celebrate the achievements of others. EPISODE OVERVIEW: In this episode, I give an update on my life for the last 8 weeks (PS, it's been rocky... and I might cry for just a second in the intro), share where I'm going, and a metaphor for coming out of the darkness. Around 11 minutes in, I share my TOP takeaways for embodying Community over Competition even when your ego tries to push you into comparing and competing with others. Top takeaways: Celebrate your team (instructors). Their success doesn't mean you won't have it too.Encourage your riders/clients to expand their modalities and workoutsPlan a group workout to go to another studio with your riders, instructors, etc. Allow yourself to be inspired by the success of othersAs a studio: don't market your community by encouraging others to leave the ones they're currently a part of (a la SoulCycle/Peloton) Instructor Magic SUMMER SCHOOL edition is NOW OPEN for registration! Welcome back to Big Boss Mare with Brandy Von Holten! Let's meet Tony & Merry Kroeger with Heartland Eq Stables located in Sedalia, Missouri. Before the stables, they dove into a business called The Weed Zapper. This dynamic duo also pastor a church together where they have done everything from "preach, teach, and play bass" for over 30 years. The world really is such a small place. Locally I was elected to our local health board in 2021. One of Tony & Merry's sons was elected in 2023 and also serves on the health board. I did not realize they were his parents until the day of this interview. Just goes to show that Tony and Merry are exceptional parents because I am a huge fan of them, their businesses, and the son, Mike.I hope you enjoy getting to know Tony and Merry as much as I did by doing this podcast interview.
One thing is abundantly clear when making connections in the medical aesthetics industry: building community is a pillar of a successful business. In this episode, Katie Martin is here to have a conversation about community over competition. Katie is a physician's assistant from California, as well as VP of Clinical Operations and Advanced Injector at Holden Timeless Beauty. Collaborating can take place inside or outside the clinic itself. Within clinic settings, it's smart to play off other colleagues' or practitioners' strengths. That way, you can fill in each other's gaps and focus on what you're good at, thereby capitalizing on your own unique abilities. One person may be a visionary, while another may be more detail oriented. A thriving business needs both. Refer to practitioners outside the clinic if you believe they can provide the best service your client is seeking. This will make for happy clients, and those clients will return to you for your services. Be an expert in your niche with the knowledge that holistic treatment is vitally important. It's always about removing the ego and focusing on getting your client the best outcome possible. Behaving competitively toward other injectors will impact how your clients view your business and will attract negative energy. Avoid speaking poorly about products they have used or other injectors. Instead, discuss how to move forward. It's likely you will receive back the energy you put out. Everyone deserves a seat at the table, and that's why it's important to support community over competition. Transform your life and the life of your patients. Focus on working together with your colleagues to create self-esteem from the inside out by providing the best client outcomes possible. Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/BeautyCultureTechnique
