It's been quite a journey from Melissa Helm's hometown of Glens Falls, to working in the non-profit world on Wall Street (of all places) and then to the Berkshires - which she is very happy to call her home. Drawn by work in corporate wellness, Melissa would later work at Kripalu and its signature stress resilience program. This all aligned with Melissa who has grown throughout her own mental health journey, struggling during her college years with stress and anxiety. She later realized that many of her peers were facing similar challenges, and she wondered at the time why there was so little conversation about mental health issues. As the executive director of NAMI Berkshire County, she continues the work in bringing mental health and suicide prevention out of the shadows - and is at the forefront of broadening the base of support in the community. Leading support groups, including peer and family support, trainings for community members and educational programs, Melissa is guiding the organization to fulfill its vision. Also in this episode we cover: Where NAMI fits into the mental health support community, the organization's youth retreat at Kripalu, mindfulness, the effectiveness of peer support, the inability to meet the mental health demands of the community and several months' wait for mental health appointments, staffing, wages, clinician burnout, insurance reimbursements, the NAMI 5K in Lenox June 17th, fundraising, the pace of the Berkshires vs. NYC, positive psychology, meditation and being present, and Melissa's part-time gig bartending at Mo's Tavern. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Melissa Helm. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-krol/support

A groundbreaking study on redlining in the city of Pittsfield shows that this community was not immune to the discriminatory practices in housing and banking for people of color, particularly for African Americans, although, not limited to African Americans. The study was presented by the NAACP, Berkshire County Branch in April 2022. You can hear the audio version of the presentation here, along with a story by WAMC-Northeast Public Radio. I had the opportunity to speak to two individuals intimately involved in this research, including Dr. Frances Jones-Sneed – who spearheaded much of this work years back. In addition, community advocate and historian Kamaar Taliaferro shares some very specific anecdotes from his thorough research on one particular neighborhood that was not only impacted by redlining but essentially obliterated by urban renewal in West Pittsfield. Serendipitously, as the report was being finalized, a once mythical redlining map in Pittsfield was discovered in the National Archives. That's where we begin the conversation with Dr. Jones-Sneed. Frances Jones-Sneed is a professor of history (Ph.D., University of Missouri) and former Director of Women Studies at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, Massachusetts. Jones-Sneed has taught and researched local history for over twenty-five years. She directed three National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grants entitled “The Shaping Role of Place in African American Biography” in 2006 and “Of Migrations and Renaissances: Harlem/NY & South Side/Chicago, 1915–75” in 2008, and "African American Biography" on 2011, all “We the People” projects. She spearheaded a national conference on African American biography in September 2006, is co-director of the Upper Housatonic Valley African American Heritage Trail, a former board member of MassHumanities, and is presently a member of the Samuel Harrison Society. She was a 2008 NEH Summer Fellow at the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute at Harvard University and is currently editing the autobiography of a 19th century local minister, Samuel Harrison and working on a monograph about W.E.B. Du Bois. Kamaar Taliaferro is a lifelong resident of Pittsfield, Ma. born and raised in subsidized housing. He graduated from Pittsfield High School in 2011 and was awarded a Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship, and attended Williams College from 2011 to 2014. I provided editing, analysis, and writing for the 2020 Black Economic Council's Idea Jam Success Report. Kamaar is a co-steward of Growing Legends–a project which seeks to develop an Urban Nursery and Youth Forestry Corp in Pittsfield and to inform new ways of communal gathering and collaborating utilizing art and gardening. In 2021 and early 2022, he was a fellow lead researcher on a case study of the Westside neighborhood in Pittsfield, examining the historical record for the presence, and investigating the ongoing effects of redlining in New England's mill towns. Currently, Kamaar chairs the standing committee on Housing for the NAACP, Berkshire County Branch, and is one of a growing handful of Farmers of Color in Berkshire County. You can often find me in Pittsfield at his urban farm tending to and being tended by the earth. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-krol/support

Just like many other citizens in Berkshire County, I want to learn more about the candidates who are seeking to be the next district attorney. It just so happens that I get to have my conversation recorded and shared out to you. The last time I sat across from Tim Shugrue, and interviewed him, it was in the studio at WNAW in North Adams in 2004 when he ran for DA. Like back then, our recent conversation was clear, we touched upon many of the issues (not all of them, for sure) – there's not too much fuss or muss. This interview is about 49 minutes. I hope that it is helpful as we all get to know the candidates running for this important office. The John Krol Podcast is a production of OneEighty Media. Imagine the perplexed look on the face of the typical commercial loan officer at your local bank, when hearing the business plan for a new local access network gaming center. Ryan Senecal has created the first of its kind around these parts, tapping into a massive market of gamers – and gamers who have a desire to connect, compete and be a part of a wider community. And, yes, Ryan did find a banker who did finally get the concept and he was able to get the startup money to open up. He's also had some other unexpected alignments along the way. I hope you'll enjoy my conversation with Ryan, the owner of Boosted Lounge – Social Gaming and Esports in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts. Boosted Lounge website from the Boosted website: Mission Statement Boosted Lounge aims to establish, grow, and foster a community of passionate gamers in an environment built from the ground up for them. About Us Ever since the Shushei pop-off in the League of Legends Season 1 World Finals, we knew esports were going to be big. As Counterstrike, Hearthstone, Rocket League, and other game scenes developed over the years, we chanted T-S-M, witnessed Firebat capture a world championship, and watched HungryBox sleep everyone at EVO. The hype was real and we shared it with all of Twitch chat. Now it's time to share our passion for gaming and esports with the community of Berkshire County. Boosted Lounge is the only place where you can play, talk, and watch your favorite esports with others in the area. The John Krol Podcast is a production of OneEighty Media. Pittsfield is located right in the heart of the Berkshires in Massachusetts. While it's the largest city in Berkshire County, the city has a real laid-back atmosphere. In 2011, Pittsfield was hit hard by Hurricane Irene, and in the aftermath, it was noticed that three well-known men, two of whom were vulnerable, had vanished from their apartment. Suspicions would immediately be aroused, and these suspicions would only intensify when it was discovered that one of the men was scheduled to testify against a high-ranking member of the Hells Angels.SPONSORS -Fortunately: Thank you to Fortunately for sponsoring this episode!
