Samia Halaby: Kinetic Painting

A conversation between artist Samia Halaby and Sanna Almajedi, recorded live following a performance at e-flux on September 10, 2024.  In the performance, Halaby used a computer program that she coded in the early '90s to generate abstract shapes. These were manipulated in real-time alongside sonic improvisation by musician Amir ElSaffar.  Samia Halaby is a trailblazer in contemporary abstract art internationally. In her distinctive painting style, Halaby draws inspiration from nature and historical movements such as early Islamic architecture and the Soviet avant-garde. Displaced from Palestine in 1948 with her family when she was eleven, Halaby was educated in the American Midwest at a time when abstract expressionism was popular but female abstract painters were marginalized. Halaby believes that new approaches to painting can transform our ways of seeing and thinking, not only within aesthetics, but also as a way to discover new perspectives for advances in teaching, technology, and society at large. This conviction has inspired her to pursue additional experiments in drawing, printmaking, computer-based kinetic art, and free-from-the-stretcher painting. Halaby's work is collected by many museums such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of Art (New York and Abu Dhabi); Cleveland Museum of Art; Institut du Monde Arabe; and Birzeit University (Ramallah).

Debra Rapoport, a native New Yorker, has been curating her outfits from handmade elements since she was a girl.  Starring in Advanced Style the film and featured in three Advanced Style books, Debra is a creative force of non-traditional materials and reuse.  Her clothing and accessories are designed to be worn and displayed... and she work IS displayed in many museums. This is what the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC published about her: Debra Rapoport is a visual artist working with nontraditional and repurposed materials to create clothing and accessories that she wears with great panache. Her flamboyant embellishments and hats start with A/B/C: Assembling, Building, and Constructing for the body, incorporating color, texture, and layering. Embracing the idea that frugality is fun, she constantly re-invents and curates her closet without being a conspicuous consumer. Brad Kahlhamer's (b. 1956 Tucson, AZ) art lives at the crossroads of real and imaginary worlds. Born to Native parents and adopted by a German-American family, he was raised in Arizona and Wisconsin and spent his early adulthood as a musician living on the road before settling in New York City. Shaped by this nomadic history, Kahlhamer's work explores the particularities of the American landscape: the desert ecology of the Southwest, the parks and waterways of the upper Midwest, and the gritty streets of the urban Northeast—often fusing references to multiple regions within a single work of art. Similarly, Kahlhamer draws from a broad array of artistic sources, from Native American aesthetics and Abstract Expressionism, to graffiti and popular culture. Even his references to Native culture cut across tribal traditions, as Kahlhamer views himself and his art as “tribally ambiguous.” Kahlhamer's art explores notions of cultural hybridity and the experience of navigating multiple communities, as well as the representation and appropriation of Native culture. Kahlhamer lives and works in New York City and Mesa, Arizona. His work has been included in national and international group exhibitions, at institutions including the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, the Aspen Art Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Kansas City), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York). His work has recently been shown in solo exhibitions at the Joslyn Museum, Omaha; Zidoun-Bossuyt Gallery, Luxembourg; Jack Shainman Gallery, New York; Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, Connecticut; and Andréhn-Schiptjenko Gallery, Stockholm, Sweden. Like them or loathe them, social media platforms now play a prominent role in the art world – whether as marketing tools for businesses, museums and artists, playgrounds for self-promotion, or forums for the dissemination of images and debate. But how far do social media, and particularly Instagram, inform how the art market operates? Have they disrupted traditional sales methods or diversified business opportunities in this sector? And what effect have they had on the behaviour of art world professionals, in terms of decision-making or interpersonal relations? These are among the topics addressed by Paul Melton in a new Apollo sponsored by Sotheby's Institute of Art. Melton is a member of the faculty at Sotheby's Institute of Art New York, and an expert in strategy and communications in the culture sector. In the podcast, he argues that the art market's infatuation with Instagram brings it closer to financial markets, in terms of how value is assigned in an economy in which attention has increasingly become an asset in its own right. At the end of the show, we welcomed legendary bassist Jason Newsted (Metallica, Flotsam and Jetsam, Voivod) to discuss his art being on display at an upcoming exhibit in NYC, at Art New York, which takes over Pier 94 in New York City beginning May 3 to 7, 2017. We talked to Jason about the show, how he got into visual art, Metallica's performance at the GRAMMYs with Lady Gaga, and some discussion about finances.
