Kelli Scarr is an American singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist based in Kingston, NY. She is also the founder of Vera Jean Music, a pioneering record label dedicated to championing the talents of women artists over the age of 40.On May 12, 2025, she unveils Greater Mysteries, an immersive album and performance experience inspired by the ancient myth of Inanna. Born from a 2022 artist residency in Crete, and recorded in Iceland, the album invites listeners to connect with their own cycles of transformation. Transcendent piano and airy woodwinds intertwine with Scarr's otherworldly voice and the earthy pulse of the rhythm section, alongside contributions from an array of surprise musicians—creating a soundscape steeped in myth and mystery.Raised in Northern California, Scarr's musical journey began in church, eventually leading her to Berklee College of Music before settling in New York City. Over the years, she has woven her way through an eclectic range of projects, from fronting the bands Moonraker and Salt & Samovar to a significant collaboration writing, recording, and touring with Moby. Her artistry extends into film scoring, where her emotive and organic approach—favoring live musicians and improvisation—has set her apart. She earned an Emmy nomination for her score to the HBO documentary In A Dream (2008) and has composed music for dozens of films, TV shows, and commercials. Notable projects include the documentaries Advanced Style and Far Western, and the forthcoming After All (2025), for which she composed the score and contributed six original songs. As a solo artist, Scarr has released three albums—Piece (2010), Dangling Teeth (2012), and No Rush (2021)—establishing herself as a singular voice in atmospheric, deeply emotive songwriting. Her forthcoming fourth album, Greater Mysteries, marks a new creative chapter, offering music as an initiatory experience. The project will unfold through intimate preview concerts in the Hudson Valley, culminating in immersive cave performances this fall and beyond.Today we get to dive deep into Kelli's creative process in the making of Greater Mysteries from the seeds of inspiration that came from many sources such as Talk Talk by Spirit of Eden, Maureen Murdock's "The Heroine's Journey," and Dr. Catherine Svehla's mythical wisdom to the whisper from her psychic about Greece in her future. Kelli shares about the magic and mystery of her residency in Crete, how the voices of Odeya Nini and members of the Threshold Choir appeared to lend magic to the album, and we listen to three songs - "Knowing is the Call," "The Yes that Leads," and "Aphrodite" - as we meander through the myth of Inanna and how transformation happens to us..."she's not dying, she's flying free."Hudson Valley audiences will have an exclusive opportunity to preview Greater Mysteries before the rest of the world. On April 16th, Kelli is hosting Lesser Mysteries at Unicorn Bar in Kingston. The special preview event will feature an impressive lineup of local and national talent and offer attendees a unique opportunity to witness the early stages of what will become a larger, Greater Mysteries immersive cave experience scheduled for fall 2025.https://www.viewcy.com/e/lesser_mysteriesHere's Kelli's recommendation to Leah Thau's Podcast, Strangers.Today's show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.Our show music is from Shana Falana!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.org** Please: SUBSCRIBE to the pod and leave a REVIEW wherever you are listening, it helps other users FIND IThttp://iwantwhatshehas.org/podcastITUNES | SPOTIFYITUNES: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/i-want-what-she-has/id1451648361?mt=2SPOTIFY:https://open.spotify.com/show/77pmJwS2q9vTywz7Uhiyff?si=G2eYCjLjT3KltgdfA6XXCAFollow:INSTAGRAM * https://www.instagram.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast/FACEBOOK * https://www.facebook.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast

In the lecture "What is Freestyle," Coach Carl Paoli presents a comprehensive framework that serves as his book's thesis. The lecture offers an in-depth exploration of the philosophy and mechanics of physical movement and fitness, providing a holistic approach to understanding and mastering these disciplines. He emphasizes the role of "position" as the cornerstone for interpreting and understanding movement. Through this lens, he discusses the mechanical similarities and differences between various exercises and explores movement control from both global and local perspectives. Towards the end of the lecture, Coach Paoli elaborates on different techniques as progressions that contribute to skill development. He concludes by asserting that the "freestyle" approach transcends being a mere methodology; it is a lifestyle that can be applied both in sports and everyday life. For as long as I’ve known her, Mel Brady has been a stylist. However in the last couple of years, she has made the transition to model. And while this doesn’t sound too unusual in this, the era of ‘the slashie’, what is unique about this situation is that Mel is her mid-fifties… which has then meant she has added another slash to her career catchphrase: activist. Because, I found out, being a women in your fifties who decides not to fade into sexless oblivion IS is act of social rebellion - particularly, it would seem, in the eyes of the media. And thus the Embrace Age movement was born, in which Mel has rallied women from around the world to share their ideas of just how they choose to see themselves through the media. I wanted to talk to Mel about the growing popularity of this grey-roots movement - and the career in styling and image-making that got her to this place of proudly authoring her own content. This is a great episode for anyone who is looking to use their skills to forge not only a career - but a path towards the change they want to see in the world.
Photographer and author Ari Seth Cohen is the creator of Advanced Style, a project devoted “to capturing the sartorial savvy of the senior set.” He says, “I feature people who live full creative lives. They live life to the fullest, age gracefully and continue to grow and challenge themselves.” In this interview, you’re going to hear all about how he began, who he met along the way, what he’s learned and how he his work has helped to change the way the world looks at older women and advanced beauty. We discuss love and loss, and refusing to give up and go gently into elastic waisted pants, and of course we talk about the enduring, uplifiting power of style. It’s packed full of wisdom, but even better - it’s packed full of Advanced Style ladies. From Ilona Royce Smithkin, who at 97 published a book on staying creative, to Jacquie Murdock, the former Apollo dancer who at 82 shot a Lanvin campaign, and so many more. How fab is our music? New Zealand designer Karen Walker is one of The Business of Fashion’s 500. Her brand sells in 42 countries, in prestigious stores like Barneys New York, and Liberty of London. She is a New York fashion week veteran, with some very famous fans. Everyone from Beyoncé and Rihanna to Scarlet Johansson, Alexa Chung, Lorde, Lena Dunham, Toast the dog, oh look everyone, wears her sunglasses. She also designs ready-to-wear, handbag, shoe and jewellery collections as well as homewares. Okay, Karen Walker is a hot brand... But what does it take to be an ethical one too? How can successful designers incorporate sustainability and social responsibility into their business models? Karen says "ethical values of responsibility, uniqueness, quality and connection, are at the heart of what we do." What does that look like on a practical level? Karen is engaging with all these issues. She is working with Baptist World Aid Australia on their Ethical Fashion Giude, for example, and has an ongoing collaboration with the Ethical Fashion Initiative. She is highly invested in the process of producing her products and the people who make them, but also in what it means to work as a creative in fashion today, from responsibilities around supply chains to the impacts of advertising and messaging. She also has a lot to say about the deep stuff: the purpose of design. Ultimately, what is fashion for? We start off this interview talking about widening the lens on beauty and Advanced Style, we discuss beginnings - Karen started out by making a single men’s floral shirt for a musician friend when she was 18-years-old - what’s changed and what’s remained the same. And we look to the future. How can fashion designers meet tomorrow's challenges? Check out the shownotes here. Music is by Montaigne http://www.montaignemusic.com.au/ Enjoying the show? Susan Good, in her early 70’s, is the owner and primary writer for the award-winning HoneyGood.com website, a fashion, food and lifestyle blog she founded in October 2012. She is the wife of real estate auction pioneer, Sheldon F. Good, as well as a mother, daughter, grandmother and great grandmother to 25 "GRANDS" who call her "Honey." And she is a girlfriend to many. When Susan's first grandchild was born in 1987, her daughter selected “Honey” as her grandmother name because it so aptly suited her personality and outlook on life. Today, Susan Good is called Honey by her entire family and the Honey Good staff. Honey's website is written for vibrant, visible and savvy women over 50. In many ways, Honey's own life mirrors her readers' lives: a mixture of the bitter and the sweet as well as the joys and the sorrows. As she reminds her nearly 150,000 loyal followers in Chicago and around the world: “We have earned our PhDs in Life." While living in Honolulu with her first husband and their two daughters, she was suddenly widowed in her early 40's when her husband had a massive heart attack. She survived two bouts with cancer and the challenge of blending two large families. “I’ve traveled the world, made lasting friendships, endured my hardships and am grateful every day of my life. Through example, I have shown my family, and now my readers, how to make sweet lemonade out of lemons and to always see the glass half-full.” Describing herself and her mission, she said: “I am a woman with many titles who wears many hats and loves life to its fullest. I walk on the sunny side of the street. I love to 'shop till I drop' and I own my own style, thanks to my 96-year-old mother, my teacher and my friend. I have plenty to say to the billions of women worldwide, including Baby Boomers who are turning 65 at the rate of 10,000 a day!” HoneyGood.com is an anthology of thousands of personal stories with insights and advice. Their subjects run the gamut from friendships, grand-parenting, blended families, widowhood, remarriage, family suicide, dating after 50 and cancer survival to advice about why every woman should own that little black dress, buy that properly-fitted shoe and consider growing out her gray hair. In a weekly piece, Honey offers tips on how to survive every situation from losing one's car keys in the onion bin to packing for that fabulous trip. Topics reflect the trials and tribulations most women face during this challenging yet invigorating passage. A writer for Michigan Avenue magazine had this to say about Honey Good: “With a PhD in life thanks to her large and colorful immediate family, poignant personal history and sophisticated lifestyle, Honey Good has a lot to say about everything-- and does so with passion, verve, humor, acumen and wit. She is giving an age-old 'character' – i.e. the proverbial grandmother – a fresh, hip, new-age voice. Her posts are savvy and fun, yet also relevant and substantive. But above all else, her content is authentic at a time when authenticity is king.” Or queen? This hip, sophisticated matriarch of a blended family speaks to audiences worldwide. She writes for the Huff Post and regularly contributes to Sixty&Me.com, Medium.com and GRAND magazine. She soon will write lifestyle pieces for the new national Headlines Network powered by Aggrego, a Wrapports company that owns the Chicago Sun Times and is affiliated with nine major publishers around the nation. Profiled in Michigan Avenue and RM (Rancho Mirage, CA) magazines, Honey Good was recently interviewed by Prevention.com as well as such notable personalities in their own right as Ari Seth Cohen, the documentary producer, photographer and author of Advanced Style. “Amazing things can happen when you commit yourself,” she added. She, her husband and their beloved Wheaten Terrier, Orchid, split their time between homes on Chicago's Gold Coast and in Rancho Mirage, CA. They have traveled to 67 countries, including Iran, Syria and Antarctica, and with their pooch Orchid always by their side, they visit their children, grandchildren and great grandchild who live in seven different U.S. cities.

Hey my clan of the crave bears! How are your cravings? How is your life? It’s January 2016! This is episode 71 and I am so excited to introduce you to my special guest Debra Rapoport. One of the beautiful women profiled in the incredible documentary “Advance Style”. I am going to be talking to Debra about aging, vitality, personal style and how she has partially created this international movement “Advanced Style”. Not only is she an incredible healer she is an amazing artist! I have been prescribing the movie she was featured in, “Advanced Style” in my cravings cleanse and mindset makeover program, which starts at the end of January. We start on January 27th. It’s a two-month live coaching program with me and a growing group of some awesome ladies and a couple cool dudes who are interested, curious, ready, dedicated to looking at their cravings and desires, and finding a new way with food and their body. You can go look at more info, decide if its right for you, and sign up at cravingscleanse.com. It is the bee’s knees! It’s my favorite program, I love teaching it! And I encourage during the program to watch this movie “Advanced Style” because this movie is about women over the age of “young and sexy” and how they exhibit themselves, their style and their bodies. Debra was one of the featured women in this film. She has taught at University of California, Davis, New York University, Museum of Modern Art where she currently teaches how to create your own style and how to create your own clothes, accessories and really into working with found material. She works with a lot of recycled materials. She’ll make hats and bracelets out of toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls. She is really into transcending fashion into personal style which reveals your individual strengths. Now you know I love that, because I love to talk about positive psychology and strengths. You can go check out her website at vivalehat.com. In our interview you will hear her talk about importance for her and how personal style is healing. She believes that the act of creatively adorning yourself is very personal and its very healing and helps us be honest with ourselves and about ourselves. She has such a beautiful take on health as you age. And I got to tell you now that I have watched the movie a couple of times now and hanging out with Debra over the years I’m not afraid of aging. I want to take care of myself while still having fun but I’m not scared of aging out anymore. I cannot recommend this enough to go check out Debra’s website vivalehat, go check out the movie “Advanced Style”. Watch it with the ones you love! “The human brain and the human body learn best while playing”. - Debra Rapoport To learn more about The Cravings Cast, visit alexandrajamieson.com/71

This week's show features the stars of the new documentary, ADVANCED STYLE, a film about the movement of women over 50 looking fucking fabulous and loving life and having incredible taste in style and fashion. Enjoy this chat about: how to never be boring, where you can wear something you were afraid you wouldn't be able to wear, why hats are important, and how come enough with the t-shirts and jeans. Plus: Julie went to see the Chuck Jones exhibit and The Jerk at the Museum of the Moving Image, and she has things to say about Bernadette Peters's hair and Coyote & Roadrunner's questionable appeal, Aaron Spelling's unique "Fuck You" approach to creativity, how Mickey and Minnie Mouse would, as a human couple, be the worst people to ever have to endure a dinner with, and a dramatic reading of the most misguided and self-centered passages of Ann Rule's book about Ted Bundy. Thanks for the sour persimmons, cousin!
