Twiggy Dawn is a Mother, Herbalist, Permaculturalist, Educator and founder of the Elder Tree. Folks if you want to hear all about the vision for the Elder Tree from our founder, this episode is for you! Twiggy is passionate about growing, harvesting and making medicines and also has a keen interest in wil & naturalised medicines. She loves connecting people to the plants and also to their own ancestral roots. She has been entranced by plant medicine for as long as she can remember, forming an early interest in witchcraft and fairy lore and making potions from plant material as a child. She honours the plants as teachers with deep reverence and respect. During our chat, Twiggy shares how her experiences working with suboptimal herbal materials and feeling frustrated with offering only surface level herbal symptom relief to customers, inspired her to birth her business Alchemilla Herbals where she has really stepped into a teaching role through her many workshops which help to activate the home herbalist in participants. During a transformative experience at Pindara farm in Tasmania after the birth of her daughter where she helped grow, harvest and make herbal medicines, Twiggy shares how her dream for a space for healing and learning with plant medicine began to solidify into her vision for the Elder Tree. It's really lovely to hear Twiggy speak passionately of her vision for the Elder Tree and as this episode was recorded towards the beginning of our podcast journey, this vision is now beginning to become a reality… Chatting about self care, Twiggy shares the pillars of health that encapsulate what self care means to her and how it's really important for her to start her day mindfully, rather than jumping straight in… She speaks about balancing her time and allowing herself enough time in the outdoors amongst nature and her plant friends, engaging all her senses- smelling, tasting and listening to the plants. Twiggy takes us on a little journey amongst her plant friends, sharing how when she connects with a long term ally, Motherwort, all her senses are awakened… Towards the end of our chat, Twiggy shares some beautifully accessible ways for us to invite herbs into our daily rituals, using simple techniques and ingredients and finding ways to connect with the plant allies that grow around us… **CONNECT** Alchemilla Herbalshttps://www.alchemillaherbals.com.au/ ** Find out about Twiggy's new online course 'Meandering Medicine' to learn about herbs in a deep, gentle, explorative way here https://www.alchemillaherbals.com.au/meanderingmedicine Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alchemillaherbals/?hl=en https://www.facebook.com/AlchemillaHerbals/ **SHOW NOTES** How do I use herbs in my daily life? The foundation of every farm and garden begins with a seed. On this week's episode, we dive into the world of seed production, why it matters, and how you can be more informed about purchasing seed and producing your own. Don Tipping is a farmer, permaculturalist, seedsman, and owner of Siskiyou Seeds, in the Siskiyou mountains of southwest Oregon. As stated on their website, “Siskiyou Seeds is dedicated to providing growers of all scales with organic, open-pollinated seeds of exceptional vigor, quality, and integrity. We are unique in the seed world in that we actually grow most of the seed that we sell here at our home farm.” Today, Don walks us through why it matters that Siskiyou Seeds actually *grows* their own seeds at their home farm, or by partnering with nearby farms, and how bio-regionally adapted seeds are the gateway to the heirlooms of tomorrow. Corinne and Don discuss— Origin story of Siskiyou SeedsThe work of adapting seed “with your hands on the dial” How the industry at large moved away from open-pollinated seed selection, to exclusively hybrids How to make open-pollinated seeds even better than hybrids using classical seed selection techniquesHow large scale commercial seed production is geared to a very specific market based on economies of scale Wild Garden SeedHow John Navazio shaped Don's education of learning how to breed for disease resistance, nutrition etcGregor Mendel and the birth of geneticsThe overlapping of art and farming in seed production and flower farming Why bioregional adaptation matters for producing the seed crops of tomorrowHow to separate the wheat from the chaff in open-pollinated seed productionTurtle Tree SeedsAdding a face to a seed packet Creating a “Terroir” seed collectionRowen White of Sierra SeedsDon Tipping's Seed Academy Nikolai Vavilov Kristyn Leach of Namu Farm and Second Generation SeedsThe journey of the cucurbita maxima to the United StatesUsing genomics to unpack the “real” story of seedsHow the home gardener can look at seed saving The importance of curiosity The need to backstop, or guarantee, bioregional seed companiesFind Don and his products at siskiyouseeds.com, as well as on Instagram @siskiyouseeds And as always, we'd love to hear from you. In this episode, I connect with a very dear soul sister and friend, Farrah Theresa. Farrah is a nature connection guide, permaculturalist, and musician. Her and I speak about 'ecological identity' and the various threads that lead into and out of this concept. We gently dig into rich soil together, co-locating ourselves in the sacred realms of being human, being here on earth, being of earth, and being for earth. Farrah also shares a powerful guided meditation as well as a gorgeous and haunting song weaving that she channels on the piano in the moment. Farrah's BioMy name is Farrah, South African born and bred on the land of the Sesotho , isiZulu, IsiXhosa & Setswana, currently living on Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation (Squamish) land in British Columbia, Canada. With my foremost training Social Anthropology & Psychology I first channeled my love for the service of humanity from a social perspective and later into eco-social endeavors as an Environmental Educator, Permaculturalist and general plant-enthusiast in Thailand, Malaysia, South Africa and most recently, the West Coast of Canada. Something kept tugging at me soul to go deeper, to connect with the roots of my childhood in wild places where the dangers of baboons, green mambas and wild bush-pigs kept us ever witness to our place in the world. Thus began my journey 'back to my wildish-nature' through the guidance of the Work That Reconnects, Forest Bathing, Coyote's Guide and Braiding Sweetgrass. And so I offer you this co-exploration of deepening & expanding our true relationship with the natural world through intentional earth-based practices. My deepest hope in these offerings is that we may learn to live our lives in authentic gratitude for all that we are gifted in this life, and in so doing co-create a more harmonious world. ______________________________________________________________________To learn more about Farrah and her beautiful offerings you can find her online at...Website: https://www.farrahtheresa.com/Current Offering: Self-Guided Forest BathingInstagram: @farrah_theresaSoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/farrahtheresaPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/FarrahTheresaShow Notes:Music "Running Water" by Jason Shaw from the Free Music Archivehttps://freemusicarchive.org/music/Jason_Shaw/Audionautix_Acoustic/RUNNING_WATERS______________2-46"Clear Waters" by Kevin MacLeod from Incomtech https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3516-clear-watersPodcast theme music is "Karma Cat" by Dyalla (Creative Commons License)Books MentionedComing Back to Life ~ by Joanna Macy and Molly Young Brown Thinking Like a Mountain ~ Multiple AuthorsMagdalene Manuscript ~ Tom KenyonEcological Intelligence ~ Ian McCallum Ecotherapy: Healing with Nature in Mind ~ Linda Buzzell and Craig ChalquistAnansi Boys ~ Neil GaimonWomen Who Run With the Wolves ~ Dr. Clarissa Pinkola-EstesSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/ambersamaya)Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/ambersamaya)

I have an unusual interview for ya'll today since I actually wont be the one conducting the interview. Instead, Neal Hegarty, one of the lead designers and team members here at Abundant Edge will be taking the reigns since he's actually known Alex Kronick of Caoba farms in Antigua Guatemala for years and is good friends with him. Now I call Alex, the most impressive permaculturalist you've never heard of because he likes to keep a low profile, but to his credit, his farm and enterprises are truly impressive. He co-manages an incredibly diverse biointensive market garden within the town that also has a farm to table restaurant, farmers market and organic local goods store. Around the periferies of the farm he raises many varieties of animals, fruit trees, perrenial crops and bokashi composting. He's raises snails and has an exoitic plant nursery and seed saving operation. It's the most complete and functional permaculture operation that I've seen anywhere in the world.
