Shaunestte continues our Survivor Series with Rabbi Avremi Zippel of Salt Lake City, Utah. Rabbi Zippel is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and an outspoken advocate for children and legislative reform. He shares his story of abuse at the hands of his family's babysitter and how he struggled for years to come to terms with the trauma that it caused. He also discusses his experience through the legal system as he sought justice from his abuser. Shaunestte talks with Lee Buckingham, Prosecuting Attorney for Hamilton County. The Indiana primary election is May 3rd and Lee is running for re-election. They discuss how the population in Hamilton County has grown over the years and the work that Lee's office has done to support public safety efforts and serve its residents. Lee joined the Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorney's Office in 1995 as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney. And has spent the bulk of his first 16 years with the office handling major felony cases from financial and property crimes to violent offenses like rape, child molesting, burglary, robbery, and murder. Since 2011 Lee has been leading the Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorneys Office as the elected Prosecuting Attorney. The population has grown from approximately 274,000 to over 350,000 today. Despite the monumental growth and change, one thing has not changed. Erin talks about her life as a “faculty kid” on the campus of Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina and the sexual assault she suffered by an older classmate while she was a resident and student of the university. Erin describes the culture at Bob Jones University as strict and controlling and talks about how that culture had a negative impact on her search for justice after her assault. A two-year investigation into the way reports of sexual assault were handled by Bob Jones University was conducted by the non-profit Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment (GRACE) . The GRACE Report included findings from its investigation and recommendations for the university to improve its response to reports of sexual abuse and assault including proper reporting to law enforcement. This is the second of our two-part series about the physical and sexual abuse reported by kids housed at Miracle Meadows School, a residential treatment center located in West Virginia. Shaunestte interviews attorneys Brian Kent and Guy D'Andrea, who along with their co-counsel, represented twenty-nine former students in civil litigation against school administrators and faculty. Brian and Guy talk about the complex nature of sexual abuse litigation and the important role their trauma-informed training played in helping them connect with these survivors while also respecting their mental health needs. Brian and Guy share how teamwork between co-counsel and the survivors led to an impressive $51.9 million settlement. Brian Kent is a founding partner at the law firm of Laffey, Bucci & Kent, LLP based in Philadelphia with offices in New Jersey, New York, and Delaware. Brian was a sex crimes unit prosecutor with the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office where he worked to ensure the safety of abused children. He handled 100's of sexual assault and child sex abuse cases from inception and investigation through trial. He also tried and convicted some of Montgomery County's most dangerous sex offenders. In his current practice, Brian represents sexual assault survivors in a variety of litigation that has garnered extensive local and national media attention. Specifically, he has represented numerous women who reported they were sexually assaulted at Massage Envy facilities. Guy D'Andrea is an experienced high-profile criminal and civil trial lawyer who has litigated more than 100 jury trials and hundreds of bench trials. He is a former Assistant District Attorney in Philadelphia. During his tenure as a prosecutor, he tried over 500 cases. In his current practice, Guy regularly handles cases nationally involving sexual and physical assaults in institutional settings including boarding schools, residential treatment facilities, hospitals, universities, sports organizations, day care centers, and schools. Our final installment of this three-part series features an interview with Tim Evans and Robert Scheer Indianapolis Star reporter and photo journalist respectively. Both of our guests interviewed dozens of women who came forward to report emotional and sexual abuse perpetrated by Larry Nassar and other USA Gymnastics team doctors. Tim and Robert share details with Shaunestte about how this story began, the discoveries the team made through the depth of their investigation, and the detailed checks and balances that journalists must adhere to in order to responsibly report a story. His work has been recognized with dozens of state and national awards, including the Casey Medal for reporting on children's issues from the University of Maryland’s Journalism Center on Children & Families and Annie E. Casey Foundation; the Tom Renner Award for criminal justice reporting and the IRE Medal, the highest honor bestowed by Investigative Reporters and Editors; the Free Expression Award from the Freedom Forum Institute and Newseum; the Medal of Freedom from the University of Missouri School of Journalism; and Indiana Journalist of the Year from the Society of Professional Journalists. Evans and his wife, the Rev. Jennifer Evans, live in Brownsburg and are parents of an adult son, Morgan Evans. Robert Scheer was raised in California, and while earning a biology degree from Humboldt State University, took a photo class on a whim and worked toward becoming a photojournalist. After working at several small Northern California newspapers, he joined the Indianapolis Star as a staff photographer in 1998, where he currently works. An early advocate for newspaper video, his still, multimedia, and mobile work have sent him to news and sporting events in Iraq, Greece, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, and most large cities of the United States. In recent years, he has worked on IndyStar investigations into the deer breeding industry, the underregulated world of pet medicines, and with a team of four colleagues, broke major investigations on USA Gymnastics and disgraced team doctor Larry Nassar. Scheer has worked as an adjunct college professor, volunteers as an ESL tutor, and does outdoor things like cycling and backpacking.

Jon and Shaunestte discuss the culture of abuse within USA Gymnastics and how team doctor Larry Nassar was able to groom not only the athletes he treated but also many of the adults around him as he committed countless acts of sexual abuse. We are so excited to have Lisa on our show and talk about her experience in making the award- winning four-part series. Lisa discusses the importance of allowing the women who came forward and reported their abuse the appropriate space and time to share their truth along with interesting case developments that evolved while filming. Due to scheduling issues, Brad has not been able to speak with us yet. However, in this episode Shaunestte and Producer Jaime briefly talk about the unique perspective of this case that Brad provides with his book. Shaunestte talks with clinical psychologist Dr. Lisa Elwood about the effects sexual trauma has on the mental health of sexual abuse survivors. They discuss how therapy can help people struggling with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and negative behaviors that can arise as a result of sexual trauma. Dr. Elwood explains the different types of therapy to consider along with some advice on how to select a mental health professional to help survivors on their path to healing. Dr. Lisa Elwood is an assistant professor for the University of Indianapolis College of Applied Behavioral Sciences and a licensed psychologist. Shaunestte will be talking with Barbra Bachmeier, JD, MSN, APRN. Barbra is a nurse as well as an attorney. Her nursing practice is focused on in emergency and forensic care while her legal practice is centered on guardianship, Guardian Ad Litem work, personal injury, and domestic violence/sexual assault. Barbra is also a retired U.S. Army National Guard Lieutenant Colonel. This interview will be focused on the medical examination that takes place when a person who has been sexually assaulted arrives at a medical facility. Shaunestte and Barbra will discuss the purpose of the exam as well as general procedures that sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) follow to gather evidence that will assist law enforcement as well as provide after-care resources for the patient. The trauma of the abuse has impacted him throughout much of his adult life. Eric shares his story which includes his struggle with addiction issues and how therapy is helping him deal with the trauma he suffered. Eric’s story is published in two parts. This is the second part of this discussion which covers the perspective of being a Black male survivor of sexual abuse as well as the work he is doing with Prevail, an organization dedicated to serving victims of violence and abuse, to help others who are struggling with issues related to sexual abuse. Shaunestte talks with Indiana State Senator Michael Crider about the work that went into the creation and adoption of Jenny’s Law and how that legislation helps sexual assault survivors. They also discuss the role of sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) and the important function they serve in conducting sexual assault exams and collecting evidence so perpetrators of sexual violence can be held accountable for their actions in court. Shaunestte will be talking with Greg Laker, partner and chair of the personal injury practice and sexual abuse litigation team at Cohen & Malad, LLP and Amina Thomas, attorney and fellow sexual abuse litigation team member. Greg will share more about his background fighting for survivors of sexual abuse as well as his journey in building his legal practice that is focused on personal injury and the work he has done on cases involving children. Amina will talk about the importance of being an advocate and providing a voice for survivors in the civil justice system.
Host Shaunestte Terrell talks with Delaware County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Hoffman about his work holding perpetrators of child sexual and physical abuse accountable for their actions. Eric talks about a few cases that made a big impact on his career and the role that all adults have in protecting children from abuse. Eric Hoffman is the prosecuting attorney for Delaware County, Indiana. He initially joined the Delaware County Prosecutor’s office as a law clerk in 2001 and has served the office in a variety of roles throughout the past nineteen years. Eric prosecutes most homicide cases and other selected crimes of violence including sexual abuse of adults and children. He has become active in both enforcing and improving Indiana’s failure to report child abuse and neglect statute.
