It's another MiOsc episode! Oscar and I reflect on our recent trip to Africa. We discuss the vibrant culture, languages, and safaris. The post 400. MiOsc on Banned Books, the Power of Storytelling, and our African Journey first appeared on Sifu Mimi Chan.
My guest today is Dr. Neha Sangwan, an internal medicine physician, CEO, and founder of Intuitive Intelligence, and an author. We dive deep into the takeaways from her latest book, "The Power of Me," inspired by her journey into and out of professional burnout. She shares all the ways that we can course correct and avoid personal and professional misery and exhaustion, or worse, physical disease. Between our fast-paced world and underdeveloped communication skills, it's no surprise that many of us do not navigate our friendships, spiritual life, exercise life, nutritional habits, and mental health practices at a level that supports us in the long term. Neha gives specific strategies on how to navigate stress today and avoid burnout. She also creates realistic techniques that can help us effectively communicate honestly and openly during stressful times. Through her medical practice, she realized that most of her patients were suffering physically from something in other areas of their lives. Once we have the ability to tune in and isolate these sections of our life, it gives us the tools to figure out if they are a drain or a gain and what tools and exercises we can use to reinforce our well-being. In "The Power of Me," she does a thorough job of giving you the science, tangible exercises, and a practical workbook with multiple examples of techniques around communication based on your personal style. Most of us human beings are weird. We make these declarations about what we want, then when it comes to taking the steps necessary to make that happen, we do everything we can to avoid them. And the longer we do that, the bigger the task seems to be and the more we beat ourselves up for not doing it. If you have behaved the same way, or you're stuck at the moment, then take solace from the fact that you aren't alone. All of us do it, and more often than not for the same reason. In fact this situation came up recently in a coaching session with one of my Speaking Club Live members, Donna Ferenth, who has kindly agreed to let me share our discussion with you. Donna is the owner of a multiple taste award winning artisan tea company called Unravel Tea, based in the highlands of Scotland. She first came into my world through my Snackable Story Challenge and has carried on working with me on her talks and content over the past couple of years in The Speaking Club. Following our session Donna took action and I hope that listening in on our discussion may help to get you unstuck too. Enjoy! What you'll learn: What's getting in the way of Donna taking action The important distinction I discovered around the age of 40. Who Arnold and Betty are and where they get their power from. How you can manage your version of Arnold and Betty. Why you can be sorted in one aspect of your life but issues can resurface in business. The double-edged sword of procrastination. On this episode of This is NuCalm, your host David Poole welcomes Julie Burns, functional nutritionist to athletes, coaches, and trainers. Julie is the Team Nutritionist for the Chicago Blackhawks and the founder of SportFuel, Inc. and Eat Like the Pros® – an integrative sports nutrition and wellness consulting firm and organic meal delivery service. She regularly provides nutrition guidance to coaches, athletic trainers, amateur athletes, and health care professionals. Tune in for an information-packed discussion ranging from where science stands on the foundations of good nutrition, to what all thriving human diets have in common, to some common signs of nutrient deficiencies, and to the basic things you can start today to improve your health and keep moving forward. Introduction quote “You're out to work or you have a big dinner, that's the worst thing you can do is to have a huge meal, and to have it be a lot of calories because then your body's not going to be able to rest and digest when you're sleeping, which is when you do your recovery.” — Julie H. Burns Guest bio Julie H. Burns, MS, RD, CCN is the founder of SportFuel, Inc. and Eat Like the Pros® – an integrative sports nutrition and wellness consulting firm and organic meal delivery service. She regularly provides nutrition guidance to coaches, athletic trainers, amateur athletes, and health care professionals. You can find out more about Julie on LinkedIn | Twitter, and through her companies Sport Fuel and Eat Like The Pros. Key Takeaways [:58] David introduces today's guest, Julie Burns and reminisces about how they met before diving into what brought Julie to become a nutritionist. From attending the same college as her mom to supervising the BlackHawks nutrition program, Julie touches on how her nutrition advice evolved from the '90s “high carb, low fat” to what it is today. [6:06] What is functional nutrition? Julie breaks down how a “whole health” approach enables the personalization of nutrition as well as how they go about finding the root of people's health issues, from initial meeting to specialized, curated testing. [8:50] Although one size doesn't fit all when it comes to nutrition, the foundational role of the circadian rhythm in nutrition is becoming more clear as research comes out. Your biggest meal should be around noon, coinciding with peak digestion. Restrict eating — eat during daylight/fast when it's dark. Mornings are more insulin sensitive. [11:13] David speaks to a specific personal issue with getting bloated even when fasting which Julie says is a red flag! She asks some pointed questions that could lead to potential answers. Did you know that training naturally elicits a cortisol response which in turn wears down the intestinal lining? [13:53] What can laymen look for when starting on a functional nutrition journey? People have done really well on a variety of starkly different diets — from Inuit peoples to the Maasai — however, they all have a few key components in common: no processed foods, low toxicity, low stress levels, community, and proximity to nature. [15:58] Julie offers a very simple process for determining your food sensitivities. By removing inflammatory foods — sugar, corn, soy, dairy, nuts — and adding them back slowly, your body will quickly tell you if there is an issue. [17:16] Do you get hangry? Do you crave sugar? That's a nutrition red flag. Julie touches on insulin sensitivity and how real foods and lowering your carb intake can help you flatten insulin peaks and drops and establish a stable base. [20:00] What's good breakfast food? IF you eat breakfast is the caveat! Julie recommends around 20 grams of protein, healthy fats, and veggies or low-sugar fruit. (Keep in mind that one oz. of meat is around seven grams of protein.) [25:21] The body does heal itself, so your age shouldn't stop you from trying to improve your overall health! Julie lists the tests from adrenals, thyroid, pancreas to the gut, immune and brain function, followed by sex hormones, and finally liver, lymph, and kidney function. [28:45] Julie does believe in the importance of supplements, but she is adamant that no amount of supplementation will save you from a bad diet. She touches on what to look for in your own life to better inform your supplementation routine, from organ meats to healthy fats and countering medication-related depletions. [31:59] Muscle cramping is a sign of deficiency, David and Julie discuss Magnesium delivery systems as well as root reasons for this deficiency. [30:27] Alcohol… The research is all over the place but the more recent information seems to say that anything over two drinks for a man and one drink for a woman is toxic. Julie shares her tips on how to counter some of the negative aspects of drinking. [38:50] Vegetarian/vegan/carnivorous, which is best? Julie offers her professional opinion starting with “it depends on the person.” She does offer that in the long term, the vegan diet may not be healthy and explains how and why vegetarian and carnivorous can work for some people. [45:47] Julie talks about epigenetics and the future of nutrition and how much she is NuCalming! [48:00] David thanks Julie Burns for coming on the podcast and invites listeners to tune into the next episode. In order to make our business boom, you MUST know your numbers. And a bookkeeper is the best way to do that. Most entrepreneurs are creatives and visionary. I’m a weird one where I LOVE knowing my numbers and I look at them daily. However you operate, Chris does a great job of explaining why it’s super important, what you should look for in a bookkeeper, and gives us some great advice on being a business owner as he shares his own nitty gritty.
In this episode, Siobhán Callaghan(School of English) speaks to Dr Alison Waller about the powerful act of rereading books from childhood. Alison is the author of Rereading Childhood Books: A Poetics (2019), in which she explores what it means to return to texts from our childhood and develops a new model for understanding lifelong reading. For many of us, the events of the past year have challenged how we perceive the passage of time. In our discussion, Siobhán and Alison explore how and why we return to the same texts throughout our lifespans. Alison discusses what first kindled her interest in rereading and how readers make memories of texts and shares the methodology that she used to undertake this work. They discuss the powerful emotions that can arise during the rereading experience, and Alison explains the particular “rereading attitudes” that she uncovered over the course of her research. Alison has also applied her expertise on rereading in a co-creative project, working with Gemma Seltzer and Wallis Eates on “Lifelong Reading: New Stories”, an initiative that invited older adults living with dementia to explore their childhood reading. Steve Schlafman is a friend, mentor, a sponsor of sorts to me, and a very experienced Venture Capitalist who also has 5-years of sobriety under his belt as of today, June 5th, 2020. After 1 year of sobriety, Steve wrote a blog post under a pen name (which you can find here) explaining his experience getting sober and what it meant to him. Today, he’s sharing that blog post under his own name, for the first time. Steve talks to me about how important it is to share openly because that’s what gives others the strength to get help and open up as well. Steve explains that sobriety is a superpower. He talks about how his life has been radically transformed by sobriety as well as what life was life before, what changed and what life is like now. You can connect with Steve here: Twitter, LinkedIn, Website, Instagram, High Output (coaching practice), Steve’s Personal Blog Items mentioned during our chat: Original 1-year blog post: https://medium.com/@todd.s.bauers/healing-through-openness-8cc280eb182b Books: The Power of Now, Integral Recovery, May Cause Miracles HERE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT: Steve talks about when he first became aware that he should consider whether or not he was using substances too much. A therapist started to ask him questions about the frequency of his use, and eventually recommended that Steve try to stop using by attending a 28-day intensive out-patient program after work. He explains what this experience was like in our chat. Steve ended up getting 6 months of sobriety under his belt after this out-patient program, but he recounts, that he was not really “ready” to go all in. He talks about how his spiritual condition was not where it needed to be to really stay sober. It would be 10 years before he got to the point where he was ready to really take that step. Steve talks about how his life wasn’t in shambles, he didn’t leave a wake of carnage, he didn’t hit a “rock bottom” – he talks about how he figure out that he needed help without having to have that stereotypical rock bottom moment. Steve started to realize that he was reaching outside of himself for things like validation, and love and that at the end of the day, he was never going to achieve those things if he kept seeking it externally. Steve talks about how he embraced transcendental meditation and how that practice shed a light on how he really felt about many things in life, including his use of substances. Steve knew he was not well. He appeared fine on the outside, and he knew it, but inside he knew he needed help. He was sick of living that way and just did not want to live that way anymore. It just came down to wanting a better life and wanting to feel amazing and wanting to perform. Steve tells the story of going to his first AA meeting, how he found his way there, what it was like, what happened and how he felt during it. Steve talks about the first year of sobriety and how he handled it. He talks about what was hard, what wasn’t, and how he managed to get through those early cravings in the first few months of sobriety. Steve talks about the blog post he wrote about getting sober and why he is talking about it so openly today. Steve feels a responsibility to use his platform to share his story so that it can provide strength to others who may need help or to share their story. This is directly aligned with our mission here at the Stigma Podcast. He also talks to us about how substance abuse has not been widely discussed in the tech community the way mental health has been and he wants to help change that. We talked about addiction as an epidemic, why Steve calls it that and how prevalent it is. Have you gone through life ticking off all the right boxes?Your life is as you believed it should be. Career, relationship, home, kids...you invested in all that external structure that you believed would make life feel stable and secure. But somehow all the right boxes don’t add up to you feeling connected and whole. You’re starting to wake up. Meaning...you are finally starting to pay attention to your body. You are ready to stop apologizing for taking up space in your own life. You are realizing that you are holding the pencil and that you have a choice in how you write your story.Coming home to yourself, to your True Self, is not a process of going *out there* to find her. It’s also not about rearranging the circumstances of your life to entice her in. It’s about recognizing that she’s been there all along. Bringing all your parts back together - from hollow to whole - means forgiving, celebrating, admitting, accepting and loving who you are. Coming home to your True Self is not a sunshine and rainbows experience. In fact, it will require you to attend a thousand funerals of the person you used to be. But doing so means that you will finally feel whole and complete exactly as you are no matter how the external circumstances shift. Habits are the foundation of our day to day lives. Trina explores two quotes from Mike Litman and shares her experiences with building habits, including her struggle to get the laundry done or avoid fast food. Many of us never question our beliefs. We are on autopilot and this is by far one of the most limiting habits we have. Sit back and listen how you can reprogram your mind, break your mental barriers and rewire your beliefs to create the life you really wish to live. Question: When faced with an unpleasant situation/confrontation do you tend to observe or absorb? We’ve touched on this topic several times but never really went deep into it, about our belief system, where it stems from? What differentiates each of our beliefs? How to even be aware that you or someone else is allowing their belief system to limit themselves in some way or limit you? Topics Covered In This Episode: Belief system what we think is true. We’re on auto pilot and don’t even think twice to question our belief about someone or something. Where do these come from? Why is this such a bad thing? This belief system is programmed into our subconscious mind. We have two types of minds The subconscious has been fed since birth. This means people before you who have been tainted by the same limiting beliefs are now shaping you and how you grow up to believe or limit yourself. You see the vicious cycle here? What can you do to change this? First acknowledge it. Learn about this. Then take steps to actively work on your yourself and your mindset. Reprogram the subconscious to help you believe things that you want to see in life or experience What steps to take? 3 Major Steps You Can Take to Reshape Your Mind: As you are falling asleep, feel the emotion of what it is you want to experience. The subconscious mind speaks in the language of feeling and as you drift off you are going to the theta state which is where the subconscious mind operates. This is important. We talked about growth mindset and law of attraction before and manifesting by writing things down BUT people skip the feeling part. You have to be able to daydream and imagine these things as you would feel having them. That's the key part. Wire in new thoughts/habits. This ties in with our episode about taking action even if you're fearful or people are telling you no. By doing this you will create new habits, new thoughts, new confidence levels, new belief systems for yourself. Scientifically, brain neurons fire together and wire together. The more consistently you wire in a new behavior, action or thought, the more it becomes a part of your new autopilot mind. Do something you have never done before. When you do this, your mind has no choice but to make new connections in the brain. In the unknown is where we can create great change and miracles. Books: The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy Power of Awareness by Neville Goddard Quote: "Our subconscious minds have no sense of humor, play no jokes, and cannot tell the difference between reality and imagined thoughts or images. What we continually think about eventually will manifest into our lives”

In this solo episode of The Pique Podcast, I mock myself and my overuse of the phrase “life changing.” Jokes aside, I dig into the six understandings that have changed the trajectory of my life. I pull from many universal teachings, that I've learned by way of Eckhart Tolle, Jess Lively, Brooke Castillo, Cal Newport, and the Quakers. 1. The Power of Now 2. Travel (especially further understanding what I can and cannot control) 3. Intuitive work 4. The self-coaching model 5. Deep work 6. The belief that we all have a light within us I firmly believe that I was introduced to each of these things in the order that I needed them in my own life. They all layer on top of each other to form a pretty freaking empowering worldview. Happy listening. Summer is the time we look forward to reading -- or rereading -- our favorite books. How do you choose from the stack of next-to-read books that pile up beside your bed? Do you relish the adventure of what a new book might bring or do you reread an old favorite that changed your life in some way, that one book that resembles a child's much beloved stuffed animal -- dog-eared and stained with food, sweat, and tears. Today, writers explore the transformative nature of reading, writing, and a great novel. GUESTS: Steve Almond - writer and author of ten books of fiction and non-fiction, including Against Football and Candyfreak. His latest book is William Stoner and the Battle For the Inner Life. Julia Pistell - freelance writer, comedian, Managing Director at Sea Tea Improv, creator of Syllable Series, host of Literary Disco, a podcast about books and writing. Joseph Luzzi - writer and author of the memoir, In a Dark Wood: What Dante Taught Me About Grief, Healing, and the Mysteries of Love. Do our male listeners still use shaving cream to shave their faces? You might want to stop and hear what Brian uses every morning. Just give it a try, you can thank us later! Nina & Brian go heavy on the topic of "Manifesting" or "The Law of Attraction, and how they each go about it in their daily lives. It's changed their lives forever and they wish to share these techniques with anyone & everyone. By learning the secrets of manifesting, you can begin to change your thoughts and your life. You can remain focused on what you want to happen. And soon, your greatest desires will manifest. You've probably noticed that you're constantly thinking about something – about where you want to go or what you want to achieve. Your mind is always thinking and manifesting something. That's why it's so important to know exactly how to use your manifesting power. Everything happening in your life is a reflection of what is happening inside of you. Whatever you focus on will take shape and manifest into your daily life. Of course, you know that not everything you think about manifests. Otherwise, every time you thought about an elephant, one would appear before your very eyes. That's because the speed at which your thoughts manifest depends on how much resistance you have to their actual appearance in your reality. Resistance is why no matter how much you may think about what you want, it doesn't appear. Your resistance doesn't allow it. Until you get rid of the resistance, your desires won't manifest. But as you eliminate resistance, your desires will manifest faster and easier…sometimes manifesting instantly! So ask yourself what are you thinking about now? What is manifesting in your life? Three Elements of Manifesting: What you think about, you bring about We all have a vibration or frequency that welcomes or blocks abundance. This could be true love, happiness, peace of mind, wealth, joy, etc. even a new car The power of the subconscious mind is that it manifests (anything) and it is the thing that is at work behind the scenes. It's more powerful than we are led to believe. Tip: Don’t mistake what we are saying here for “all I have to do is think and it’ll happen.” No, you have to take action too. You have to learn to listen to your intuition too. It’s not magic. Books: The Power of the Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy The Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer The Secret by Rhonda Byrne
In 2015, Kala turned her life upside down and shook it out. She left the nest really empty after ending a long term marriage. She sold or donated anything that wouldn't fit into her trusty Honda CRV with 95,000 miles on the odometer, and traveled solo for 18 months throughout the US, Latin America, Iceland, and the UK. She read the blogs of other people who were making a living working on the internet - so called "digital nomads". Kala eventually moved to Mexico City and became a full-time digital nomad. This past January several of the NBT team members and I met up for sun and camaraderie at the Flō Retreat Center, in Uvita, Costa Rica. Flō is run by strength coach, Ben House, PhD, who’s been on the podcast once before. Previously we talked about his work with clients and the effects of hormones on building strength and lean mass. It’s now a year later and we’re continuing the conversation. On this podcast, Ben is joined by myself, Dr. Tommy Wood, Megan Roberts, and Dr. Lindsay Taylor for a discussion of some of the practical and philosophical aspects of strength training and public health. Ben also shares his strategy for evaluating scientific literature and explains why everyone can benefit by building muscle. Let's meet our guest. Luke Southern, the Managing Director of DRUM, Omnicom’s award winning content business that makes entertainment for brands, and honestly, you MUST listen to this, as it is a fascinating take on content. Luke’s career (starting with some high profile DJing at University), has covered and still does in his current role – brands, entertainment and technology – He’s a Brand-entertainologist…. I kinda just made that up, but what isn’t made up is that Luke has led the business through years of growth culminating in Cannes Lions award for content agency of the year for entertainment and advertising effectiveness. Luke has made his career journey through some striking brands such as Virgin Media, PlayStation and Sony Music, creating compelling content that is built on winning share of mind, not buying share of voice. So being at the forefront of content creation, the best question to ask Luke to kicks things off was obviously to find out what the greatest music album of all time is? Happy Marketing Everyone! (http://www.advanceyourart.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Screen-Shot-2016-09-21-at-11.33.06-AM.png) What happens when you realize your day job as a White Hat Information Systems security specialist working for the government isn’t as interesting as you thought it would be? If you’re like my friend Nicole Gallub you moonlight as a DJ and get paid to travel around the world. After you find out your manager is taking a huge chunk of your booking fee you fix that by creating a start-up digital booking agencies that is focused on helping artists book gigs, fill out the paperwork, and get paid. MEET NICOLE: Nicole Gallub is a former Information Systems specialist and current DC-renowned DJ, she used her technology background and experience in music to create PELONKEY: a solution to business problems for herself and her colleagues in the entertainment and events industries. In a nutshell, Pelonkey is an entertainment marketplace where people planning events can shop easily and transparently for entertainment options, and performers can manage, protect, promote, and organize their business. Both can find, book, and contract one another online quickly and securely. After graduating from the University of Richmond with honors in the field of Information Systems, Nicole worked several jobs in this field for a decade, including Helpdesk with MeadWestvaco, Network Administration with SITE-Blauvelt Engineers, and then Network Security for various entities within the Federal Government. During this time, she spent my evenings pursuing my passion for music, moonlighting as a DJ, and performing for various local venues and parties within Washington, DC. Fortunately for her, the DJ career became successful enough to leave her career in IT and pursue the dream of working full-time as a DJ/Producer, and DJ Neekola was born. DJ Neekola is not only one of Washington, DC’s favorite DJ’s, but has also been requested frequently overseas in Switzerland, Greece, France, Italy, and Spain. In collaboration with J Punch she owned a record label in 2011 called NomNom Records, bringing on producers such as Dr. Kucho to produce original tracks and remixes, in addition to other talented local producers in the metro Washington, DC area.
