In this episode of iCantCU, I discuss two major audio description failures—one that's on me, and one that's simply unacceptable. The first happened when I was at the NFB National Center in Baltimore for the IEP Advocacy Academy. I shot a Federation Focus video to show what it's like there, but I totally missed the mark on describing some of the visuals. Thanks to Auphonic's amazing processing, it cleaned up the audio so well that it actually removed sounds people needed to hear—like a ball rolling in a game and doors opening. So, blind folks watching had no idea what was happening for parts of it. My bad. The second fail? A company presented at an OVR meeting and played a video with zero audio description. Just music. No clue what was on the screen. And this was in a room full of people with disabilities—including blind folks. Totally missed the point of accessibility. Plus, I give a quick update on White Canes Connect, which just hit two “best of” podcast lists, and my guest host spot on That Real Blind Tech Show. All the links are below. In Episode 136 of White Canes Connect, hosts Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein welcome retired Judge David Tatel, author of Vision: A Memoir of Blindness and Justice. Judge Tatel reflects on his remarkable legal career—most notably, three decades on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit—while offering an unflinching look at his personal struggle with blindness caused by retinitis pigmentosa. Tatel shares how he spent most of his life downplaying or hiding his vision loss, even removing mentions from public records and press materials. It wasn't until his eighties, and through the process of writing Vision, that he fully embraced blindness as part of his identity. The conversation dives into his legal philosophy, his path from science to civil rights law, and the tools—both human and technological—that helped him succeed as a judge who is blind. The memoir is more than a professional journey; it's also a deeply personal story of resilience, love, and self-acceptance. Listeners will hear about Tatel's guide dog Vixen, his enduring partnership with his wife Edie, and his evolving fight for justice. It's a compelling episode about truth, advocacy, and the power of living fully seen. Show notes at https://www.whitecanesconnect.com/136 Links Mentioned Get the book! In this episode, I recap my trip to Las Vegas for the NFB of Nevada State Convention—part learning, part getaway with Liz. As chair of the upcoming Pennsylvania convention, I wanted to see how other states run theirs. Nevada's was short but packed, and I took notes, especially on their use of breakout tracks and Family Feud. Liz and I also hit In-N-Out Burger twice and even saw Michael Symon at his BBQ spot. Navigating the hotel-casino was tricky, and I share some challenges, especially solo ones. The Meta smart glasses I wore were a game-changer for identifying signs and surroundings. We capped off the trip with a frustrating movie experience—the audio description device failed again. Still, it was great getting away and gathering ideas for our Harrisburg event this fall. In this episode of iCantCU, I share a jaw-dropping moment when the director of a Pennsylvania state agency called me a four-letter word. Yes, really. It all ties back to my ongoing fight for transparency and inclusion in the Business Enterprise Program (BEP), which provides blind entrepreneurs with opportunities to run vending and food service businesses on government properties. Despite promises of reopening the program, Pennsylvania hasn't trained a new blind vendor in over five years. With the number of operators dwindling from 200 to just 20, and many nearing retirement, the program's future is in jeopardy. I break down the bureaucratic roadblocks, potential conflicts of interest, and the resistance to allowing public attendance at key meetings—including my own. I also discuss the upcoming PA Association of Blind Merchants Spring Fling on May 17 in Harrisburg. It's a chance to support blind entrepreneurs, network, and raise awareness. Tickets are available now! Blind entrepreneurs exhibit opportunities and sponsorship opportunities are also available. See all the links below in the Links Mentioned section. In Episode 126 of White Canes Connect, hosts Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein welcome Dylan Hedtler-Gaudette, Director of Government Affairs at the Project on Government Oversight (POGO) and a proud member of the National Federation of the Blind of Maryland. Dylan shares his experiences as a policy advocate, including his recent congressional testimony on waste, fraud, and abuse in federal spending. While his testimony was substantive and well-researched, Dylan faced an unfortunate wave of online backlash—not for his arguments, but for his blindness. Instead of engaging with his policy points, critics weaponized harmful stereotypes, dismissing his expertise solely because he is blind. NFB leadership, including President Riccobono, strongly condemned this type of discrimination and called for more respectful political discourse. Despite the attacks, Dylan remains focused on his advocacy work. He discusses the importance of persistence, staying informed, and engaging in grassroots activism. In Episode 125 of White Canes Connect, hosts Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein welcome Jesse Shirek, a government affairs specialist with the National Federation of the Blind (NFB). This episode focuses on the recently concluded Washington Seminar, an annual advocacy event where blind individuals from across the country meet with legislators to discuss key policy issues affecting their community. Jesse provides a historical overview of Washington Seminar, dating back to its origins in 1973, and emphasizes its continued importance today. He explains the rigorous preparation process, from training sessions to mock meetings, ensuring that NFB members present a unified and compelling case to lawmakers. This year, the seminar focused on three major legislative priorities: the Medical Device Non-Visual Accessibility Act, the Websites and Software Applications Accessibility Act, and the Blind Americans Return to Work Act. Additionally, a last-minute initiative emerged in response to concerning executive orders affecting disability rights and funding. Jesse shares his personal journey into advocacy, inspired by firsthand experiences witnessing systemic barriers faced by blind individuals. He highlights the power of grassroots advocacy and the significance of relationship-building with legislators. The conversation also touches on NFB-NEWSLINE®, a valuable resource for accessing newspapers and magazines in an accessible format. Listeners are encouraged to take action by reaching out to their representatives and participating in next year's Washington Seminar. For more information, Jesse provides direct contact details for those interested in advocacy or NFB resources. In this episode of iCantCU, I recount my journey to Washington, D.C., for the annual National Federation of the Blind (NFB) Washington Seminar. I share insights into the event's purpose—advocating for policies that support blind Americans—and my meetings with congressional representatives and senators. I detail the structured meetings, including conversations with Senator McCormack and staff from Senator Fetterman's office, emphasizing the importance of protecting hard-won rights under laws like the ADA. I also reflect on travel challenges, from navigating train stations to nearly getting on the wrong train to trouble with taxis. Despite not feeling my best, I make the most of the experience, participating in legislative discussions and a reception in the historic Kennedy Caucus Room—where Titanic hearings were once held. I also dive into personal highlights, like my long-awaited trip to Oohh's & Aahh's for mac and cheese, only to find my taste buds uncooperative due to illness. Wrapping up, I reflect on the importance of advocacy. Join me for a firsthand look at what it's like to be part of the fight for accessibility and inclusion. In episode 280 of iCantCU, I share my experience traveling to New York City for Jane's apartment settlement. I reflect on navigating the subway, offering reassurance to those hesitant about using public transportation. Drawing from my father's advice—"Be careful, but don't be afraid"—I encourage everyone to embrace new challenges, whether in travel or life. I also detail my visit to Jane's studio apartment, describing its compact yet functional space in a desirable building. Post-settlement, we explored the city, visiting Grand Central Terminal, Fifth Avenue shops, and indulging in delicious food—including a memorable trip to Salt & Straw for ice cream. Beyond the trip, I touch on my recent participation in an accessibility panel and share insights on the importance of confidence in mobility, particularly within the blind community. To be clear, though, the person afraid of the subway is fully sighted. Tune in for a mix of travel stories, personal reflections, and valuable accessibility insights. In this packed episode of iCantCU, I dive into holiday highlights, culinary adventures, and upcoming plans. First, I share my experience attending a French macaron-making class with Liz and Jane at Sur La Table. While the process was visually intensive, the instructor, Elliot, made it incredibly tactile and inclusive for me, which was both surprising and heartwarming. Though I'll never make macarons solo, it was a fun and memorable family activity. I also recount the hilarity of Ziggy's new oversized Christmas pickle toy—a three-foot plush he's been dragging around the house like a proud pup. Seeing his excitement brought back the joy of giving. What Christmas isn't complete without Nazis? I tell the story about what Jane's friends spotted in the image of me and Ziggy. Spoiler alert: it was the shadowbox with my dad's POW papers and the spoon he ate with while being held by the Germans in World War Two Looking ahead, I discuss plans for the 2025 NFB State Convention and my goals for expanding creative projects. This episode celebrates family, community, and the joy of meaningful experiences. In this episode of iCantCU, I share my experience traveling to Harrisburg for the Blind Merchants Holiday Party and fundraiser, reflecting on the challenges of navigating public transportation as a person with very limited sight. Timing was a major hurdle, from the unpredictable delays with CCT to coordinating a group of 17 people on an Amtrak train. I discuss how small inefficiencies can snowball, highlighting the importance of time—our most precious resource. Once in Harrisburg, the event was a success, with 65 tickets sold, great food, a DJ playing festive music, and lively auctions and raffles that raised over $6,000. I was impressed by how smoothly everything ran, despite a few hiccups, like managing auction payments and losing a check. I also recount some funny moments, like my guide dog encounter with a cracker I dropped and the dictation mishaps that never fail to amuse (or frustrate). I wrap up by reflecting on the importance of accessibility and time management while balancing humor and frustration. The fundraiser was a rewarding reminder of what our community can accomplish, even when obstacles arise. In White Canes Connect episode 117, co-hosts Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein welcome Kennedy Zimnik and Karl Belanger from the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) to discuss the Accessibility Toolkit, a resource designed to empower blind and low-vision individuals to advocate for accessible technology. Kennedy, an Access Tech Specialist, and Karl, a Non-Visual Accessibility Analyst, share the story behind the Toolkit, which evolved from a 2018 Braille Monitor article to a comprehensive, step-by-step guide now available on the NFB's website. The Toolkit equips users with practical advice on reporting accessibility issues to companies, emphasizing professionalism and collaboration. Karl and Kennedy highlight the importance of clearly describing problems without needing technical jargon. For example, users can report that a screen reader reads "edit, edit, edit" instead of identifying form fields. They stress that most companies are open to accessibility improvements but often lack awareness, making user feedback essential. The episode also explores the growing role of AI in accessibility, the persistent challenges with PDFs, and the importance of self-advocacy. Listeners are encouraged to use the Toolkit, share feedback through the NFB's Inaccessibility Tracker, and engage with Karl and Kennedy for guidance. Whether you're part of the NFB or not, this episode is a valuable resource for making technology more inclusive. In this episode of iCantCU, I share highlights from the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania's state convention in Erie and reflect on the experience of turning 60. The journey to Erie was an adventure in itself, with a nine-hour bus ride filled with trivia games, camaraderie, and the occasional logistical hiccup. Once there, I was happy helping others find their way around the venue and assisted with setup for various events. Despite challenges, the convention was a resounding success, featuring engaging presentations, a tech seminar I moderated, and valuable networking opportunities. I also discuss memorable moments from my milestone birthday celebration, which coincided with a meetup at Brauhaus Schmitz in Philadelphia. From a custom cake to great company, it was a special way to ring in a new decade. As I gear up to serve as convention chair next year, I reflect on lessons learned, including better organization and leveraging volunteers effectively. While Erie offered a stellar venue with outstanding service, its distance makes it a rare host for our conventions. Listen in for a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into organizing a convention and a bit about my plans for the future. In episode 115 of White Canes Connect, hosts Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein are joined by bioengineers Chiadika Eleh and Joey Wei, who share the journey of creating See-Rynge, a groundbreaking liquid measuring device designed specifically for the blind and low-vision community. Originally developed as a senior design project at the University of Pennsylvania, See-Rynge was inspired by the need for blind parents to independently administer liquid medications accurately, a need brought to light during a meeting with Lynn Heitz, President of the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania. Chiadika and Joey describe how See-Rynge works: utilizing audio and tactile feedback, the device ensures precise liquid measurement without the need for sight. It's paired with a companion app that tracks usage and provides dosage reminders, potentially aiding users beyond the blind community, including those with limited motor skills. Despite balancing full-time jobs, Chiadika and Joey remain committed to perfecting SeaRange, sharing their hope to make it widely accessible and affordable. Listeners are encouraged to reach out with feedback or support, and to test See-Rynge at the upcoming state convention. In episode 274 of iCantCU, I dive into my experiences walking with a white cane while out and about and the pain it causes in my hands. While I enjoy getting steps in anywhere—whether recording a podcast or walking around my house or backyard —walking in a familiar place where I don't use my cane is much easier than where I need to. I discuss the difference between my lightweight Nigel cane for home use and my trusty Jackie cane for travel. It's all about adapting to different environments, from smooth supermarket floors to uneven sidewalks. Plus, I share my recent adventure at Eastern State Penitentiary's haunted attractions and a fun outing to New York City to attend Laugh for Sight. I also chat about the upcoming NFB of Pennsylvania state convention in Erie and some plans for the long bus ride. If you've got tips on easing the strain of using a cane, I'd love to hear them! The highlight of this episode is my visit to the Pennsylvania Governor's Mansion for "Lori Listens," hosted by PA First Lady Lori Shapiro. I, along with other members of the NFB of PA, got to talk about web accessibility issues with folks from the state. We gave feedback on a Commonwealth website and were surprised to see changes made almost immediately—proof that they're taking our concerns seriously. I dive into the everyday frustrations we face when websites and apps aren't accessible—like unlabeled buttons or pages that trap you behind pop-up ads. These things can make simple tasks take forever. But it felt good knowing that someone was listening and committed to improving things. What do I mean when I say an app or a website is not accessible? I give a couple of demos of sites that are not accessible and provide a workaround for one of them. Some Bay Area cities like Oakland and San Francisco use a system known as ranked choice voting in the November election. Early voting begins today in California, and some Bay Area cities including Oakland and San Francisco are using a system known as ranked choice voting. Supporters say allowing voters to rank candidates in order of preference saves money by avoiding a separate runoff and rewards candidates with broad appeal, but it's also confusing for many voters. Scott talks about how ranked choice voting works and clears up some common misconceptions with Lisa Bryant, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Political Science at California State University, Fresno. In this episode of iCantCU (#272), I dive into a whirlwind, last-minute trip to Pittsburgh. It was a bit of an adventure, starting with a long train ride and a stay at a very questionable hotel. I mean, the smell alone deserves its own segment! But despite the less-than-ideal accommodations, I made the most of my one full day in the Steel City. Between navigating a tricky Lyft ride, representing the NFB of PA at the PaTTAN Tech Adventures event, and even catching a Pirates game, I squeezed a lot into just 24 hours. Spoiler: tickets to the ballgame were only $10! Listen to hear how I turned a chaotic day into a memorable one, complete with unexpected kindnesses and, of course, a story about some very smelly hotel carpets. Tunisia holds presidential elections Sunday that seem certain to give incumbent Kais Saied another term in office, with his main rivals jailed, disqualified or otherwise sidelined from the race. Is this the end of Tunisia's fragile democracy? Or just another chapter on a rocky road since its 2011 revolution? Lisa Bryant reports.
In Episode 112 of White Canes Connect, hosts Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein welcome Bailey Bostelman, Regional Field Director for the Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB). The episode highlights the upcoming VisionWalk in Philadelphia on October 5th, where Lisa will be participating. Bailey shares insights into the mission of FFB, which has raised over $915 million to fund research for inherited retinal diseases like retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt disease. She emphasizes the importance of community education, connecting those with low vision to resources, and the organization's no-cost genetic testing program. This initiative helps individuals with inherited retinal diseases better understand their diagnosis and access potential treatments. Bailey also discusses FFB's VisionWalk, which began in 2006 and has since raised over $64 million. The Philadelphia walk, part of FFB's annual fundraiser, aims to raise $150,000 to support research and public health education. The episode also highlights FFB's professional outreach to medical professionals to bridge the gap between diagnosis and available resources. In episode 271 of iCantCU, I talk about two state-level meetings I attended and the adventure of navigating a new train station without any help from Amtrak. First up was an OVR meeting where, despite being focused on disabilities, they had nothing accessible for blind folks—no Braille, no large print, nothing. Frustrating, but not surprising. I also attended a BEP meeting, where the training program has been on hold for over four years. It was disheartening to hear there's no clear timeline for reopening, especially since blind people rely on these opportunities to run businesses. On the travel side, I figured out the Paoli train station on my own, got to Harrisburg, and had a much better hotel experience than last time. Plus, I talk about my fantasy football leagues (still holding on!) and preview the upcoming NFB of PA state convention in Erie. In episode 270 of iCantCU, titled The Pressure of Being Blind, I discuss my recent experiences at Podcast Movement in Washington, D.C. Despite initial hesitations, a last-minute decision led me to attend the event. I share the challenges of navigating the conference as the only blind participant, emphasizing the pressure to avoid mistakes and the constant awareness of being watched. From unexpected technical issues with my website (it was hacked) right before departure to racing to catch a train, my journey was filled with obstacles that tested my resilience. I also touch on using AI tools for accessibility, the thrill of connecting with other podcasters, and the importance of independence in overcoming the unique challenges of traveling while blind. My story highlights the struggles and triumphs of navigating the world with limited vision while remaining determined to succeed in a sighted world. My ultimate goal is to show the sighted world that blind people are capable. In episode 268 of iCantCU, I take you along on my latest trip to New York City, where I tested the accessibility of a new version of a financial app. The trip had its moments, from battling some equipment issues to a chaotic cab ride that had me questioning my life choices. I also finally got to visit the Jackie Robinson Museum, something I've been looking forward to for years. Using my phone's assistive tech, I navigated the exhibits, but not without a few challenges. I also talk about my thoughts on working in an open office—spoiler alert, it's not ideal for someone who relies on listening rather than seeing. And, of course, no trip to New York would be complete without a stop at Junior's for some cheesecake with Jane. Listen for all the details, a few laughs, and some insights into accessible tech. After recording this episode, I was disappointed to see that more equipment problems in Studio B prevented the entire episode to be recorded on video. In episode 267 of the iCantCU podcast, I talk about my recent trip to the NFB National Convention in Orlando. I start by mentioning my improved lighting setup in Studio B, hoping it looks better than last time. The convention was a whirlwind of activity, and I had the pleasure of meeting many incredible people, especially the lively folks from the NFB of Puerto Rico. I'm proudly wearing their blue shirt with tactile Braille on the back, which I think is really cool. I bought a few things at the exhibit hall, including some treats from Puerto Rico and a shirt from Massachusetts. Managing the exhibit hall table for the NFB of Pennsylvania was quite an experience, filled with vendor issues and sales of tote bags and candy bars. It was hectic, but the team's enthusiasm made it worthwhile, and we learned a lot for next time. One of the highlights was attending a VIP screening of "Don't Look Now," where I met some cast members and enjoyed a post-screening hang. Hilarity ensues when I search for a quiet place for Brian to interview some of the cast and producers. Traveling was relatively smooth, thanks to some helpful TSA agents and airport staff who made the process easier. The convention itself was a mix of busy days and memorable moments. I enjoyed the camaraderie and efforts of my team, even though it was exhausting. From coordinating the exhibit hall to dealing with last-minute changes, it felt like being back in business again. Despite the chaos, it was a great trip, and I'm looking forward to future travels, though hopefully with a bit more relaxation next time. In episode 265 of iCantCU, I recount two memorable rail journeys. First, I went to Harrisburg overnight to engage with the Lions Club at their state convention. Navigating the busy, labyrinthine hotel presented challenges, but connecting with new people and sharing about the NFB was rewarding. The second trip took me to New York City, where I provided feedback on the Yahoo Fantasy app and enjoyed lunch with a friend. The trip was a success despite a few navigational hiccups and a Bugs Bunny-esgue roundabout way to Ladurée for some delicious macarons. Tune in for a detailed, entertaining account of these adventures, filled with the usual tech trials and triumphs. In episode 103 of White Canes Connect, Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein speak with Kat Bottner, the First Vice President of the Keystone Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania, a along with PhD candidates Abigail Nolin and Kayla Hepler from the University of Delaware's Department of Material Science and Engineering. They delve into their groundbreaking research on tactile aids aimed at enhancing accessibility for the visually impaired. The project, initiated through Kat's network connection and supported by a grant from the National Institute of Health, seeks to innovate beyond traditional raised bumps and lines used in Braille. Abigail and Kayla explain their focus on the material properties that affect touch perception, like surface roughness and chemistry, to create more advanced tactile stimuli. This could potentially revolutionize the accessibility of spatial information such as graphs, maps, and diagnostic tests. Kat's role as a consultant involves recruiting participants for the research and ensuring that their work remains user-focused. She also helps make the project's communication accessible, including braille labeling and proofreading. The research has shown promising results, with tests indicating that certain chemical coatings can be distinguished by touch, paving the way for new tactile aids. The team is excited about the potential applications, including more intuitive touchscreens and enhanced Braille displays, which could significantly improve the daily lives of the visually impaired by providing more detailed and accessible tactile information. In Episode 264 of iCantCU, I share two stories about how AI has made my life easier. The first story revolves around recording our Keystone Chapter meeting. I used Descript to transcribe the recording and then ChatGPT to draft the minutes. This process saved me significant time despite needing a few corrections. The second story is about ordering my medication, Taltz, from the specialty pharmacy's Express website. The site wasn't accessible with VoiceOver, so I used a series of screenshots and the Be My Eyes AI feature to navigate it. Although it took longer than it should have, I successfully verified my address and selected the correct delivery date, feeling accomplished for handling it independently. In Episode 101 of "White Canes Connect," hosts David Goldstein and Lisa Bryant engage with Rabbi Lenny Sarko to discuss his pioneering work on the Braille Torah. Rabbi Sarko, who is visually impaired himself due to complications from diabetes, shares his unique journey of adapting the Torah into Braille to facilitate inclusive religious participation for the blind and visually impaired within the Jewish community. The episode delves into Rabbi Sarko's motivation, which stemmed from his fear of losing complete sight and realizing that no Hebrew Braille Torahs existed globally. This led him to innovate and create the first Braille Sefer Torah, overcoming significant technical challenges such as ensuring the durability of Braille on parchment and complying with the Torah's stringent production standards. Rabbi Sarko's work is not only a technical achievement but also a profound contribution to inclusivity. It allows blind individuals to receive an "aliyah" and participate fully in services. His initiative extends beyond the creation of the Torah, as he also provides resources and training in Hebrew Braille and has authored accessible religious texts. The discussion highlights the broader implications of Rabbi Sarko's work for community inclusion and preserving religious practices. His story is a testament to overcoming adversity through faith, innovation, and community support, aiming to ensure that no one is left behind in spiritual practices due to disabilities.
