Today John Tefteller and our guest, Researcher Dr. Joe Webb, listen to a 1947 episode of Suspense featuring the comedian Eddie Bracken. Suspense often purposely put actors in roles that were in direct contrast with their type. This is a dramatic departure from Bracken's comedic role that we presented on Tuesday. In this story he portrays Elwood, a serial killer, seemingly driven by a distorted perception of love and represented by the objects he steals from his victims. Elwood Jones (Asian Cinema Film Club podcast) and The Reverend Scott K (The Church of Tarantino podcast) return to Flixwatcher to review Elwood's choice World War Z. World War Z (2013) is an action zombie film film directed by Marc (Quantum of Solace) Forster and inspired by the book of the same name by Max Brooks. Brad Pitt stars as Gerry Lane, an ex United Nations investigator who is tasked with finding the source and also a potential cure for a sudden zombie apocalypse. World War Z's biggest downfall is that it came out after the genre defining 28 Days Later. In its attempt to out do 28 Days Later running zombies it creates zombies that aren't really zombies. It's also biggest downfall is its decision to not stay faithful to the source material and take its name but go in a different direction. It also fails the genre by being a PG-13 certificate and lacks the gore to be a true zombie film. This was reflected in the recommendability scores, it's two hour plus runtime affected repeat viewing and engagement categories to give an overall score of 3.37. This week we're discussing Best Picture nominee, Nickel Boys, an American historical drama film based on the 2019 novel The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. It follows two African-American boys, Elwood and Turner, who are sent to an abusive reform school in 1960s Florida. We also discuss the 2025 SAG awards and more industry stories.
Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are speaking with Josh Langsam, grandson of the great Cab Calloway. Our conversation with Josh was full of amazing family connections as well as a terrific lists of firsts from Cab Calloway that was fascinating to learn about. From fashion to language to composing and performing, Cab Calloway was both an entertainer as well as a cultural icon. While many of us knew him first from his appearance as Curtis in The Blues Brothers film, as the basis for both Jake and Elwood. While that film helped bring Cab back into popular culture, Cab's influence on popular culture in the first half of the 20th century. A song writer and performer whose song “Minnie The Moocher” sold one million copies – the first black entertainer to do so. He was also the first black entertainer to have a radio show and even was made into a cartoon in a Betty Boop short. And if that's not enough, none other than George Gershwin based the character Sportin' Life in the smash hit Porgy and Bess on Cab as well. We spoke to Josh about his grandfather's legacy and how he is working to enhance his legacy in 2025 and beyond. We spoke about Josh's plans for the estate and frankly, the what's and how's of running such an estate. We learned a lot from Josh on this episode as there was a lot to learn. So sit back and take a listen to the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.
One last time, Will & Lucas discuss their top 3 episodes of the final season of Arthur and give their thoughts on how Season 25 said goodbye to our favorite aardvark. #TheEndofArthur
Feature: ‘Nickel Boys’ writer-director RaMell Ross discusses creative ways of adapting Colson Whitehead’s novel Since the book was released in 2019, Colson Whitehead's historical fiction novel The Nickel Boys has reached great critical acclaim, having most notably won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. So to adapt the book into a feature-length film seems like it’d offer a lot of pressure, but it’s one the RaMell Ross seemed willing to take on following his Oscar-nominated documentary Hale County This Morning, This Evening. This year, Ross now finds his Nickel Boys adaptation nominated for multiple Oscars, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture. Similar to the book, the film follows the lives of two boys at the now-defunct Nickel Academy, a reform school in Florida that had a track record of abusing the African American children who attended. Ross also takes a unique approach, leaning heavily into his protagonist’s perspective, with most of the film switching between Elwood and Turner’s first-person point of view. Joining us to discuss the work put into Nickel Boys is the film’s co-writer and director, RaMell Ross. Nickel Boys is out in select theaters and is now on VOD/digital.
Ep. 297: RaMell Ross on Nickel Boys Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. One of the great films of 2024 and now nominated for Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay, Nickel Boys is the fiction feature debut of RaMell Ross, who adapted Colson Whitehead's novel with Joslyn Barnes, after previously directing the Oscar-nominated Hale County This Morning, This Evening. I was lucky enough to speak with Ross about making the movie, especially crafting the form, screenwriting, representations of race, what he brought from documentary filmmaking, casting, and some of his influences. Ross and his DP Jomo Fray use an innovative mix of extended first-person camerawork to tell the stories of two boys, Elwood (Ethan Herisse) and Turner (Brandon Wilson), in a Jim Crow-era reform school in Florida that's essentially a prison, including additional impressionistic glimpses of the world through archival video and film. (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor co-stars as Elwood's grandmother, Hattie.) (Note: this interview was recorded earlier.) When the filmmaker and photographer RaMell Ross first read “The Nickel Boys,” Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about two Black boys in a dangerous reform school in the 1960s, he couldn't help but put himself in the shoes of its protagonists, Elwood and Turner. In his film adaptation of the book, Ross does that to the audience: You see what the characters see, because it's filmed from the main character's point of view. “I wondered,” Ross said, “how do you explicitly film from the perspective of a Black person?”It was an experiment that has paid off in critical acclaim. “Nickel Boys” has been nominated for two Academy Awards: best adapted screenplay and best picture. In the first episode of our special series devoted to Oscar-nominated films adapted from books, host Gilbert Cruz talks with Ross about why he made the film this particular way. It's been a long road getting from there to here. For one last time, Lucas Mancini & Will Young get together to chat about Buster being a yapper in "Blabbermouth," and deal with where everyone ended up in "All Grown Up." Along the way, the guys determine their character mixes and wrestle with the animal hierarchy one more time, Will defends his final grade, and Lucas pitches his way to fix the Arthur finale. Stay tuned to find out what comes next for Elwood City Limits... #TheEndofArthur
We're on a mission...to cram as much Blues Brothers history and content into this episode as possible! The guys are taking on the music and movies of Elwood and Jake Blues (along with Buster, Mighty Mack and Cab) this week. Besides discussing the two films and numerous albums, we're talking about the real life band behind the brothers and looking at the way they were shaped, both inspirationally and literally, by the music coming out of Stax Records in the 1960s. And hey there's a quiz question in this one!
As Arthur season 25 begins to wrap up, Will & Lucas review the latest Arthur short (Get A Hobby!) before saying goodbye to a beloved minor character in "Listen Up" and, get this, watch an episode about Arthur(!) in "Arthur's New Old Vacation." It's just Kevin and Lauren this week and they cover Emelia Perez, Joker 2, Juror #2, Nickel Boys, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The show kicks off with Lauren talking about the award winning Netflix musical, Emelia Perez. Yeah, the one that beat Wicked. Turns out, seems like shenanigans, but what can you do? There are some good bits and some bad bits about it, so have a listen and see if it might jive with you. Next up, Kevin talks a pair of courtroom dramas, Joker Folie a Deux and Juror #2. Full disclosure, one of these was really good and the other was a movie with the Joker in it... Juror #2, though, is a very good movie if you like character pieces with moral conundrums, so give that one a shot (but not the other one...) When the mic gets handed back to Lauren, she discusses the film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Nickel Boys. It's a story of a young black man in the Jim Crow era who ends up in reform school for a crime he didn't commit. What makes the movie decidedly unique is the fact that most of the film is shot in the 1st person, putting you, the viewer, in the shoes of the main character, Elwood. It sounds like a solid, if maybe a little slow, film with an interesting twist. Kevin closes the show with video games again. This time it's Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. This game is a fantastic entry into the world of Indy and Troy Baker does an incredible job bringing the Indy we grew up with to life. The story is peak Indiana Jones and the gameplay itself is a lot of fun, too. There's never anything wrong with punching Nazis! As always, thank you for watching. Talk about setting a high bar. Nickel Boys – the new film from RaMell Ross – is a drama that may be one of the first releases of the 2025, but will almost certainly still be reverberating come the end of it. Adapted from a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by The Underground Railroad author Colson Whitehead, it tells the story of a reform school for primarily Black young offenders, where violence and cruelty are carried out and covered up in a rapidly changing America. The Nickel Academy as it's known in the film is fictional, but the Dozier School in Florida, on which Whitehead based his tale, was all too real. In 2010, an investigation into the site uncovered an 111-year history of beatings, rapes, torture and murder of students by staff. Fifty five unidentified bodies in unmarked graves were discovered. More than one hundred children in total were killed, often in the most unthinkably inhumane ways, with much of the worst abuse carried out in a building known only as the White House. In Nickel Boys, a beautiful friendship begins amid that horror and injustice. The film adopts a unique first-person perspective to show a deep bond bloom, between Ethan Herisse's Elwood and Brandon Wilson's Turner. Jumping between then and now, with Daveed Diggs playing a haunted older version of one of these characters, it's one of the boldest films in this year's Oscar conversation, narratively, aesthetically and otherwise. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, RaMell and Al discuss the film's approach to memory, the meaning of the crocodile that stalks the backdrop of scenes in this film – and why the film juxtaposes the terror of earth with the beauty of the cosmos, through shots of the atmosphere as America wins the space race. Colson Whitehead's 2019 novel The Nickel Boys follows the studious and idealistic Elwood Curtis, a Black teenager whose prized possession is a recording of speeches by Martin Luther King Jr. But when Elwood is sent to a juvenile reformatory in Florida, his worldview is challenged by the horrors he experiences there. Now, Whitehead's novel has been adapted into a film. In today's episode, we revisit a conversation between Whitehead and NPR's Scott Simon, where they discuss the real-life reform school that inspired Nickel Academy, MLK's idea of soul force, and Whitehead's strong emotional reaction to the characters in his novel. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

He was just one day shy of his 75th birthday. The “you've got mail” soundbite started in 1989 when Steve Case, CEO of Quantum Computer Services (which will later become America Online or AOL,) wanted to add a human voice to their Quantum online service. Karen Edwards, who worked as a customer service representative, heard Case discussing the plan and suggested her husband Elwood, a professional broadcaster. Edwards recorded the famous phrase and others (“Welcome” “File's done” and “Goodbye” among them) on a cassette recorder in his living room. He was paid $200 for the service. His voice is still used to greet users of the current AOL service. AWS 03:04 It's Time for RE:Invent Predictions! Conflicts include parental objections to gender ideology in public school curricula, secret gender transitions in public schools, state conversion therapy bans, denials of parental custody, foster care, and adoption, and gender transition treatment in the healthcare context. This panel will explore the intersection of the transgender legal movement, religious freedom, and parental rights.Featuring:Prof. Ira Lupu, F. Director RaMell Ross discusses his new film, Nickel Boys, with fellow Director Channing Godfrey Peoples in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation, he discusses approaching his adaptation differently from the book while still trying to stay true to it, working with his actors and DP to capture his unique perspectives for the narrative, and his considered approach to imagery with this subject matter, given the historical imagery preceding it. Based on the novel by Colson Whitehead, the film tells the story of Elwood, who's sentenced to the brutal reformatory Nickel Academy in Jim Crow South after an innocent misstep. Upon meeting Turner, a seasoned ward of the reformatory, Elwood learns the fundamental tips for survival while striving to hold onto his humanity- and forms a powerful friendship with Turner. All the Worst Humans author Phil Elwood is here to illustrate his past life as a PR operative who made powerful pariahs palatable to public perception! What We Discuss with Phil Elwood: Phil Elwood's career as a PR operative for notorious figures was essentially a real-life version of being a supervillain's henchman, involving ethically dubious practices to manipulate public perception. Phil's work took him into the belly of the beast, collaborating with shady organizations and visiting dangerous locations to spin narratives for some of the world's most detestable characters. The moral weight of constantly lying and bending the truth for nefarious clients exacted a heavy toll on Phil's mental health, leading to substance abuse and requiring intensive therapy. Phil's experiences provide a rare, candid glimpse into the dark underbelly of global PR and political spin, exposing the extent to which public perception can be contrived. Despite his ethically questionable past, Phil's story offers hope for redemption. He has since established clear moral boundaries in his work, demonstrating that it's possible to learn from past mistakes and align one's career with their values. And much more...
