In Lancaster County, tens of thousands of residents have been coming together for over twenty-five years, joining forces with YWCA Lancaster to combat racism and empower women. The organization proudly hosts the biggest and longest consecutively Race Against Racism in the nation, inviting the community to participate in this vital movement. Recognizing that the journey to eliminate racism is ongoing, the YWCA emphasizes the importance of collective action in building a just future. While acknowledging that a 5K race cannot single-handedly eradicate racism, the event serves as a platform to raise awareness and mobilize individuals towards meaningful change. The YWCA Lancaster underscores the significance of "naming the need" and encourages unity among community members, friends, neighbors, and coworkers. Every step taken together is deemed instrumental in making a difference. The organization pledges to persist until injustice is eradicated, institutions are reformed, and women, girls, and people of color are universally recognized as equal, powerful, and unstoppable. Proceeds from the Race Against Racism are channeled into supporting the Center for Racial and Gender Equity (CRGE), which spearheads community education, training, advocacy, and change programs. Additionally, in observance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April, the YWCA Lancaster is conducting a Comfort & Clothing Drive. The initiative aims to provide essential supplies to sexual assault survivors in local hospitals, aiding their recovery process and assisting them in regaining stability. Sexual assault remains a prevalent issue, with statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicating that over half of women in the United States, along with one in three men, have experienced sexual violence involving physical contact during their lifetimes. In response to this sobering reality, the YWCA Lancaster is committed to raising awareness and providing tangible support to survivors through initiatives like the Comfort & Clothing Drive. Through its multifaceted efforts, the YWCA Lancaster continues to serve as a beacon of hope and solidarity for individuals affected by racism and sexual violence. By fostering community engagement, promoting awareness, and offering support services, the organization remains steadfast in its mission to create a more equitable and just society. As residents of Lancaster County and beyond unite in these endeavors, they embody the collective spirit necessary to effect lasting social change.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Special victims units are now solely responsible for investigating sexual assault and some other serious crimes, marking a turning point for the military justice system and the way sexual misconduct is handled in the military. Within each military service, Offices of Special Trial Counsel will allow trained lawyers to evaluate and prosecute allegations of sexual assault and other “covered” offenses independently, taking those cases out of the hands of victims' commanders. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced today that the Offices of Special Trial Counsel are now fully operational, officially shifting away prosecutorial discretion for serious offenses from unit commanders to specially trained military attorneys. Everything that's wrong with our justice system at the moment was summed up this week by the judge who gave those two sex offenders home detention. They were described as two of this country's most notorious sexual predators, their offending so heinous one of the victim's called it depraved, one's had PTSD and flashbacks since, one had attempted suicide twice. The judge apparently choked back tears as he said, ‘The harm to the victims can only be described as profound.' The judge 'described graphic details of some of the offending, which at times involved the use of beer bottles and a deodorant ball.' Yet given all that, what did the judge give them? Permanent name suppression - and a discounted sentence. One offender got 11 months home detention, the other got seven months. The victims urged the judge to lift name suppression, they said they felt like they had little value or worth and 'this victim blaming culture would never stop', but the judge upheld the suppression, based on the fact he felt the offenders met the category of extreme hardship - and would not be able to move on with their lives if their names were made public. They had their sentences reduced due to their age at the time, with the judge saying ‘youth is relevant as it explains the lack of consequential thinking.' What message does that send young offenders in our current climate of rampant youth crime? That you have another excuse for your behaviour - you're too young to be thinking clearly. So despite the profound impact on the victims lives, the trauma, the flashbacks, the suicide attempts, the bravery in coming forward and going through this whole process, despite all of that, what are they left with? How is there any justice served for them? The judge was concerned about the offenders' ability to move on with their lives, but what about the victims? How do they move on with their lives? This is why so many victims of sexual violence and sexual offending never come forward. This is why they feel the system is broken and rigged against them. How many times do we hear about the plight of the offender? Their background, their upbringing, their challenges? Why is that seemingly prioritised over and above the plight of the victims? These guys didn't even show remorse. The judge said, ‘I am not convinced there is a high level of remorse, remorse needn't be extraordinary but it must be genuine. There is a lack of tangible evidence of this.' So no remorse, but still a light sentence. When the TV news crews filmed one of these guys leaving court he flicked the bird at them, had his middle finger up at them the whole way out. Does that indicate a chastened offender whose learnt the lesson or understands the gravitas of what they've done? Of course not.  It's just another guilty criminal who beat the system. A system that is seemingly designed to favour the offender. It's a travesty not just for the victims, but for all the families involved in trying to hold predators to account. What it says is - the crime committed against you may have ruined your life, but the justice system wants to make sure it doesn't ruin the lives of the offenders too. I just don't see how that's fair - or just. It feels like we have a justice system working backwards, where there's actually no justice at allSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It was in the Fall of 2016 that I first received an email from Haley Murphy, then the Campus Sexual Assault Liaison of the Crime Victim Assistance Center, Inc., located in Binghamton, NY.  Haley was writing to let me know that I had been recommended to her to provide training on the neuroscience of trauma in sexual assault and interpersonal violence assault, as well as principles on trauma-informed interviewing and investigations, to a multi-disciplinary audience that CVAC, Inc., and the New York State Police were co-sponsoring. That was the beginning of what continues to be an extremely productive business relationship and friendship between Haley and me; I was hired to do the presentation which occurred in July of 2017, and it was there that I had the privilege of meeting the four panelists that presented after my training (see the previous four episodes' notes for those details). In 2020, when I made early attempts at getting the ball rolling for launching this podcast, I asked Haley if she would be a guest on my show, and she willingly agreed. It was a pleasure to get to know Haley better during that interview, and moreover, to hear how passionate she was about providing trauma-informed interviewing training to the nearly 200 law enforcement, victim advocates, mental health providers, social workers and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners that had attended the training that the CVAC and NYSP had provided. I was impressed with her enthusiasm and zealous attitude…you will be, too; it comes across in the interview. Even though this interview occurred over 2 years ago, it is still as pertinent, valid, and important today as it was then; you'll understand what I mean when you hear this interview—Haley and I discussed her background, education, and work history. But we also had a very interesting and educational discussion about common sexual trauma responses, victim impact, and her work to provide healing and recovery to her clients, at the same time she is growing in her own survival story. This is an episode you're going to not want to miss! In preparing to post this episode, I called Haley today to let her know that I was going to post it…she was very excited at the news. Even more exciting was her response when I asked if she would do a follow-up interview with me for the podcast in a few weeks; she readily accepted the invitation, not only ready to talk more about the important subjects we plan to cover, but also eager to let everyone know of the changes that have occurred in her life…a promotion at work, and a surprise that I'll let her tell you about when I post her follow-up interview! This is an episode you'll want to share!...it's too good to keep to yourself! Please don't forget to rate the episode, and subscribe to SASS—whether you listen to all the episodes or not! A new non-profit is focused on helping sexual assault victims in Adams County. Pennsylvania Coalition of Rape hired Atle Walter in September to open Adams County Sexual Assault Services. Walter and her colleague, Emily Uleau, are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to care for victims at any stage of their trauma. “We try to meet the client where they are at and provide the needs they want to be provided with,” Walter said. “We never force anything on anyone because everyone is always at different stages.” Walter and Uleau will accompany victims to the hospital or police station. They can also connect them with free legal information, counseling, food, and shelter. Services are available at any point in a victim's recovery process, even a decade later. All services are free and confidential, Walter said. “We work with them and follow up with them to make sure they are getting everything they need,” Walter said. Walter encourages everyone to call her, even if they are unsure they want to report their assault to the police. “We are there to be a helping hand,” she said. Friends or family members of victims can also call Atle for advice. “The best thing you can do is just support them as much as possible,” she said. “Encourage them to talk to somebody, encourage them to seek professional help whether through us or a counselor. Just being a friend they can rely on day-to-day is super important.” PCAR is also working with local school districts to provide sexual assault prevention education. Walter said she was drawn to work with victims since she learned such a career existed and has been in the field since 2014. “I really like helping people. Every time I get to talk to somebody and help them with what they are going through, that really keeps me going,” she said. Anyone seeking help for themselves, a friend or a family member who is a victim of sexual assault can call PCAR's 24/7 hotline at 1-888-772-7227. The U.S. military has a terrible track record of mishandling sexual assault cases. Some lawmakers are pushing for an overhaul of the military justice system that would alter the way cases are investigated, charges are filed, and juries are seated. This week we welcome Law360 reporter Sarah Martinson to the show to explain what changes could improve military justice. Also this week: we break down what to watch in an ongoing trial between King & Spalding and a fired ex-associate; a Florida state judge accuses a local attorney of blackmailing her with the release of nude photographs as part of a protracted custody battle; and the story of a Pennsylvania attorney who took of his pants in the courthouse rotunda.

Mary and Erin take on the sexual abuse crisis in our culture and how to heal from the wounds and pain it's inflicting. Mary shares inspiring stories from her 30 years of helping victims move on from even the most abominable attacks. Rape and gang rape victims who have healed and gone on to live normal lives filled with peace and joy and, surprisingly, even compassion for their attackers. It's a sober, but exhilarating conversation full of hope for sexual assault victims and predators as well as their friends and families. Episode Highlights, Ideas and Wisdom  Sexual abuse is about power and powerlessness on both sides of the equation. Can we forgive the predator? Should we forgive a predator? Sexual assault is part of the human shadow. We're all very full of light and darkness. This crisis is an opportunity to launder our darker aspects and experiences and find our light. Forgiveness is a state of freedom. Freedom from trauma. Freedom from sad decisions you've made about life or people or yourself or what you deserve. Forgiveness doesn't excuse the vile and atrocious behavior. It's not about the nature of the sins. It's about healing wounds and pain from bad experiences in life. Sexual assault is an amazing betrayal of trust. Very often the victim takes the experience to mean that they don't deserve their own boundaries. They don't deserve to succeed in this society unless they give it away. Most victims feel a sense of shame about having been in the position of powerlessness or giving themselves away because they didn't know what else to do at the time. They think maybe somehow they were in collusion with the predator if say there was a lot of drinking involved. So, they think they asked for it. They blew it somehow. The positivity of so many sexual abuse stories being told right now is that victims are feeling less alone, less self-blame and that it's less of a personal story and more of a cultural ill. Can we have compassion for everyone, including the criminals? The men that were so misguided and caused so much harm and are dealing with a lot of bad karma and weighty baggage they have to process. We don't really know why people do some of the things they do. Some predators who are ripping off a sexual experience from someone who's not exactly willing are feeling powerless themselves. They don't really know their truest self. They're seeking energy almost like they're hungry. Like they're empty and they're seeking the energy of this other person which they are going to rip off and dominate for a few moments. They feel kind of powerful for an hour or a day or a week or a month and then they have to do it again because they get hungry again. They go and find a new prey to rip that energy from. The victim feels like they've lost a piece of themselves. They also feel like they've been given the energy of shame that the predator may have been carrying around trying to get rid of it. There's this strange exchange that goes on around power and shame that all of us have to face into somehow and maybe have some compassion for both sides of the equation. You can't wait for healing until justice is done. You have to do both. If you are not ready to forgive, you have to ask yourself, how much longer do you want to remain tied to the predator? Do you really want to be tethered to him? How much longer would you like to dwell in that little dark room where you were hurt? How much longer to you want to be that child, that wounded and degraded person? An important part of the healing process is honoring your wounded personality. The part of you that feels damaged or ripped off. What you've lost. Your innocence. Trust. Your sense of rights. Honoring the person that you were and not blaming yourself anymore for what you've lost. Realizing that you were a child or the predator was much bigger than you or he had a weapon or there were four of them and one of you and that you couldn't help it.
