In this interview I talk with artist and activist Art Hazelwood about art as political action versus politics as a subject. We start with his journey as a printmaker in San Francisco in the early 90s, where he engaged in political art through the Street Sheet newspaper. He elaborates on the distinction between social commentary and political action, emphasizing his active role in various causes including homelessness and union support. We also talk about his work with the San Francisco Poster Syndicate and teaching drawing at San Quentin prison, highlighting the importance of art as a transformative tool within the prison system. Additionally, we talk about his involvement in Mission Gráfica, a print studio, and his efforts in cataloging artists' estates. The conversation touches on the evolving role of artists, the value of ephemeral art, and the challenges and opportunities within the art world today. “We've been trying to get people to stop saying ‘mainstream media.' I've got to do it now too, for the same reason that you just described: because there's nothing mainstream about 90 percent of the media being controlled by 6 private, for-profit corporations or 5 other big tech companies. There's nothing mainstream, or Main Street, about the ideas and the views that they platform. It's corporate media or establishment legacy press, and then there's independent media which means very little.” — Mickey HuffProject Censored was founded by a communications and sociology professor in the 1970s. He asked himself how it was that Richard Nixon was elected by a landslide despite ample coverage of his misdeeds and corruption in the independent alternative media. And why did it take so long for the establishment press to catch up?Steve's guest Mickey Huff discusses the work of Project Censored today and the current state of the press. They talk about how the corporate media's coverage is based on American exceptionalism and propaganda efforts, as well as the receding role of independent local outlets. They emphasize the importance of critical media literacy and how the media landscape has become more complicated with the rise of social media. They touch on the influence of big tech and billionaires on the media, and look at it as another example of corporate exploitation of workers.Mickey Huff is an educator, radio broadcast producer/host, podcaster, author/editor, the current director of Project Censored, and the president of the nonprofit Media Freedom Foundation. Since 2009, he has coedited the annual volume of the Censored book series and has contributed numerous chapters to these works since 2008. His most recent books include United States of Distraction: Media Manipulation in Post-Truth America (and what we can do about it), co-authored with Nolan Higdon, and Project Censored's State of the Free Press In 2024, co-edited with Andy Lee Roth. Mickey is currently a professor of social science, history, and journalism at Diablo Valley College where he co-chairs the History Area and is chair of the Journalism Department.https://www.projectcensored.orgOn Twitter:@mythinfo@ProjectCensored

Jessica Barksdale - Family SecretsCW: CSA, sexual coercionAuthor JESSICA BARKSDALE has written 16 books, including novels and poetry, with a short story collection coming out this year. She currently teaches a course for UCLA Extension on novel writing. The subject of Jessica's most recent novel, What the Moon Did, resonates with stories I've heard from clients in my counselling practice.Themes in this book include adolescence, vulnerability, coercion, and family secrets, with the underlying message summarized as: No matter how we try to hide our pasts, the truth finds its way to the surface, sometimes in devastating ways. Many of us raised in fundamentalist religious families felt the pressure to keep secrets in order to protect reputations. One thing we didn't know about, though, was the concept of consent.ABOUT JESSICA:Jessica Barksdale's sixteenth novel What the Moon Did was published February 2023 by Flexible Press. Will Bachman is hosting a conversation with Jamylle Carter, a member of the Harvard and Radcliffe class of 1992. Jamylle graduated from Harvard with a degree in mathematics and went on to complete a PhD in math from UCLA. After UCLA, she also held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications in the University of Minnesota. Math Think Tanks and Researching Algorithms Will and Jamylle had a conversation about math think tanks, in which Jamylle described her experience. She had spent four years in a math think tank at a university, and then another four years at a Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley. Jamylle fell in love with the Bay Area and decided to stay, working as an adjunct professor, running a Math Circle and working at a science museum in San Francisco. She has been a math professor at Diablo Valley College since 2009. Jamylle explained that a math think tank is a place funded by the National Science Foundation and other private funders for mathematicians to leave their university appointments and focus on their research with other people in the field. Jamylle's research was applied math, and it was for image processing. Jamylle was researching a new algorithm to solve a mathematical problem. The problem was related to blurring or noise in an image, and the goal was to approximate the original picture as closely as possible. She was looking at optimization methods, which are mathematical techniques that can find the best answer to a problem. Teaching Math in the Math Circle Program Jamylle then went on to explain a math circle she organized for middle school kids. The math circle was inspired by a program from Eastern Europe that was designed to expose kids to higher level math. The math circle would also give kids a chance to struggle with a problem and get excited about learning. Jamylle learned more about the program while at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. In 2007-2008, the MSRI sponsored a Berkeley Math Circle for the children of professors and wealthy families. Seeing the need for a Math Circle for a different demographic, Jamylle proposed an Oakland Math Circle for black middle school students in order to challenge the idea that black people can't like math. With the help of the Exploratorium, the Institute for the Advanced Study of Black Family Life and Culture, and the Museum of African American Technology, she was able to get grants totaling $8,000 to run the Oakland Math Circle. The Math Circle ran hands-on activities to engage students, teaching them that it was okay to be both black and like math. She taught all the modules, did the recruitment and covered topics such as rocket science, probability and music and math. She also mentioned that in minoritized spaces, students tend to work alone, which can be due to racism, fear of being too nerdy, or fear that they won't be seen as capable due to their race. Carter's motivation for starting the Math Circle program was to provide a space where Black kids could come together and enjoy doing math without such pressures. Deborah Hughes Hallett was a Harvard graduate student who eventually became faculty in the Harvard Math Department. She never earned her doctorate, and unfortunately the math department still never treated her like real faculty. She was also at the forefront of the calculus reform movement and wrote textbooks to help teach the subject. Deb was an important figure in the Math Department, providing guidance and support to students in need and advocating for reform in the subject. Designing a New Math Curriculum Jamylle and Will discussed math education and its importance. Will then asked about how to build a high school math curriculum from the ground up. Jamylle believes that everyone should have a solid background in arithmetic, such as fractions, decimals, and percentages. She also suggests introducing courses on probability, statistics, computer science, and using spreadsheets. Additionally, she wants to focus on dimensional analysis and number sense in order to help students become more comfortable with math. Finally, she believes it's equally important to teach math in a way that avoids creating math phobias and traumas, and to make sure teachers are supported and not overworked. Jamylle talks about the courses and professors that have had an impact on her life. Carter starts by talking about her undergraduate advisor Deborah Hughes Hallett, who she credits with helping her to graduate. A class that stood out was music 51, a year long music theory course. Legendary investigative reporter, Seymour Hersh, tells us all about the story he broke that describes in great detail how the U.S. blew up the Nordstream pipelines in a covert “act of war” against Russia. Plus, Mickey Huff, of Project Censored joins us to speak to Ralph about the state of the so-called “free press.”Seymour Hersh is the pre-eminent investigative journalist of our time. He has won five George Polk Awards, two National Magazine Awards, and more than a dozen other prizes for investigative reporting. In 1970, Mr. Hersh won the Pulitzer Prize for exposing the My Lai Massacre and its cover-up during the Vietnam War. In 2004, Mr. Hersh exposed the Abu Ghraib prison scandal in a series of pieces in The New Yorker. Among his many books are The Price of Power: Kissinger in the Nixon White House, Chain of Command: The Road From 9/11 to Abu Ghraib, The Dark Side of Camelot, The Samson Option, The Killing of Osama Bin Laden, and his latest, a memoir of his storied, decades-long career, entitled simply Reporter. The pipeline industry all know that Russia didn't [sabotage the Nord Stream pipeline]. Everybody knows they did not do it. There might have been some vagueness about who. But they were pretty sure all along who. Because who else threatened to do it, but the President and his Under Secretary Victoria Nuland? They're the two that went public with it— much to the dismay of the people actually doing the covert operation. Seymour HershWe always saw the Russians' great abundance of gas and the Russian delivery of gas to Europe—from Jack Kennedy in 1962— we saw it as weaponizing gas.Seymour HershIt's a famous notion that the CIA and all those secret groups, they don't work for the Constitution. They work for the Crown. They work for the President.Seymour HershMickey Huff is the director of Project Censored and the founder and host of The Project Censored Show, a weekly syndicated public affairs program. He is professor of social science, history, and journalism at Diablo Valley College. He has authored and edited several books including United States of Distraction: Media Manipulation in Post-Truth America (and what we can do about it), Let's Agree to Disagree, The Media and Me: A Guide to Critical Media Literacy for Young People, and Project Censored's State of the Free Press 2023: The News That Didn't Make the News—And Why.[The Norfolk Southern crash] is a bipartisan disaster. It's a direct example of what happens with regulatory capture. And it shows, once again, the gross failure of the corporate media— they'll cover balloons, and the Super Bowl, and a bunch of other distractions, instead of things that really matter to working class Americans.Mickey Huff, co-editor of State of the Free Press 2023: The News That Didn't Make the News—And WhyYou're not allowed to ask the tough questions, Ralph. And anybody who's been in the press pool long enough knows that. They don't have to be told that. The censorship doesn't have to be directly from the government, or even from the corporate owners. Reporters know that if they ask questions that don't get answered too often, and get overlooked, they're going to get yanked. They're going to get called back to the office. They might end up losing their jobs because they don't have copy and they don't have stories.Mickey Huff, co-editor of State of the Free Press 2023: The News That Didn't Make the News—And WhyEncourage members of the press not to forget [the 20th anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq on March 19th]. That was a massive war crime— over a million innocent Iraqis died, the country destroyed, falling apart to this day— and Bush and Cheney are luxuriating in the US without any accountability whatsoever. There's a lot of talk now on the first anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But very little talk about the US and its sociocide destruction of the Iraqi people. And I think that illustrates how important it is to ask questions on subjects that have been taboo or censored.Ralph Nader Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

On this week's program we hear a panel discussion held in observation of Constitution Day (mid September) at Diablo Valley College, where Mickey teaches. Three expert panelists examined the state of the media, the threats posed by book-banning campaigns and cancel culture, as well as the societal changes underlying these trends. For some time, the United States has been on the road to what many scholars and pundits repeatedly refer to as a coming Civil War 2.0. Major political figures call the coming elections a "war for the soul of America." With increased attacks on academic freedom from the left and right, and a massive uptick in book challenges and bans across the country, our panelists discuss the need for open dialogue, constructive communication, and advocate for protecting the right to teach, to read, and to disagree. Our guests present strategies to reduce tensions in our contentious political climate through critical thinking, as well as reciprocity and empathic listening, while seeking alternatives to censorship in the quest to overcome current challenges and ameliorate our differences. Notes: Betsy Gomez is coordinator for the national Banned Books Week Coalition. Nico Perrino is Executive Vice-President at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, formerly known as the Foundation for Individual Rights In Education. Nolan Higdon is a university lecturer in media studies and history. He's also the author of The Anatomy of Fake News, Let's Agree to Disagree, and other books on media and society.

Virtually nobody trusts what they read any more. The United States ranks dead last among 46 nations surveyed in confidence in the press. Only 29% of Americans say they broadly believe what they read, see or hear in mainstream media. And more than three quarters of the public think that big outlets knowingly publish fake news. The term “fake news” first came into common usage around the 2016 election, where Clinton claimed that Trump was being buoyed by false information shared on sites like Facebook, while Trump claimed the likes of CNN and MSNBC were themselves fake news.Joining MintPress Senior Staff Writer Alan MacLeod are two guests who know the long history of fake news in America. Dr. Nolan Higdon is an author and university lecturer of history and media studies at California State University East Bay. Meanwhile, Mickey Huff is professor of social science, history and journalism at Diablo Valley College in California and the director of the critical media literacy organization Project Censored.Together, the pair have written two books: “United States of Distraction: Media Manipulation in Post-Truth America (And What We Can Do About It)” and a forthcoming work, “Let's Agree to Disagree: A Critical Thinking Guide to Communication, Conflict Management, and Critical Media Literacy.”The divisiveness of social media has been in the news recently, with former Facebook product manager Frances Haugen having claimed that the social media giant had promoted inflammatory content to its users in order to generate more revenue, despite the consequences it has on society. Huff and Higdon agreed that disinformation is a major problem, but that the most pernicious examples of it come from the most established news outlets, many of whom were integral in selling America's wars to the public.MintPress News is a fiercely independent, reader-supported outlet, with no billionaire owners or backers. How healthy is journalism in the United States today? Andy Lee Roth and Mickey Huff of Project Censored joined us for a conversation on this topic, espousing their view of corporate media biases, censorship, and the importance of independent journalism, and the state of the free press. Project Censored was founded in 1976 by Dr. Carl Jensen at Sonoma State University to research and publicize news media censorship in the news, and to develop students' critical thinking skills and media literacy. That same year, The Project produced its first list of important but under-reported news stories, a tradition that endures to this day. Roth and Huff shared the biggest stories from the most recent yearbook, endeavoring to expose the corporate media's failures to cover systemic social problems, including the deadly consequences of enduring economic inequality, attacks on freedom of expression, and the plight of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. They presented documentation of double standards and skewed framing that they believe have served to mystify the public about COVID-19, obscure the events surrounding the Black Lives Matter uprisings of 2020, and quash urgent conversations about universal healthcare, stimulus payments, and the U.S. government's response to the pandemic. Tune in for some critical media literacy skills and an illuminating discussion about the state of the free press. Mickey Huff has been director of Project Censored since 2010; president of the nonprofit Media Freedom Foundation since 2016; and co-host and executive producer of The Project Censored Show on Pacifica Radio, since 2010. In 2019, he co-authored United States of Distraction: Media Manipulation in Post-Truth America (And What We Can Do About It). Huff is a professor of social science and history at Diablo Valley College, where he co-chairs the History program and is chair of the Journalism Department. He also serves on the editorial board for the journal Secrecy and Society, the advisory board at the crowd contested media site Credder.com, as well as the board of the nonprofit Behind the Headlines. Andy Lee Roth is associate director of Project Censored and coordinator of the Project's Campus Affiliates Program. His research and writing have been published in a variety of outlets, including Index on Censorship, In These Times, YES! Magazine, Media, Culture & Society, and the International Journal of Press/Politics. Roth has taught courses in Sociology at Citrus College, Pomona College, Sonoma State University, the College of Marin, and Bard College, and he serves on the board of the Media Freedom Foundation. The Israeli state, too, has many deep connections with the social media giants. Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked boasted that she worked closely with Facebook to censor Palestinian voices, with the Silicon Valley corporation agreeing to take down around 95% of the content she asked them to. Today, former Director General of the Ministry of Justice Emi Palmor sits on Facebook’s advisory council, the board ultimately responsible for content moderation on the world’s largest news and social media platform. In her previous role in the Israeli government, Palmor directly oversaw the systematic ethnic cleansing of Palestine and the stripping of the Palestinians’ legal rights.Discussing the big-tech censorship of Palestinian voices and the collusion between Israel and Silicon Valley are Mickey Huff, Suhair Nafal and Jessica Buxbaum.Mickey Huff is Professor of Social Science and History at Diablo Valley College, California and is director of the media freedom foundation Project Censored. He hosts the Project Censored Radio Show. His latest book is “Project Censored 2021: State of the Free Press.”Suhair Nafal is a Palestinian-American activist living in California. Earlier this year, she was taken to court by an IDF soldier who sought $6 million in damages after Nafal called her “evil” in a Facebook post. Blake Longfellow's journey through forensics has taken him across the country with stops at major collegiate programs along the way. A bay area native, Blake began transitioning from theatre to forensics in high school when a teacher forced him to try duo interpretation. Three years later Blake moved to southern California to attend and compete for Orange Coast College, picking up several community college national titles along the way. In 2009 Blake was one of the top community college competitors in the country, which earned him a small scholarship to attend Bradley University. During his time in Peoria, Illinois Blake won the 2011 NFA Informative speaking championship and two team sweepstakes titles. Then after completing his masters degree at Western Kentucky University in 2014 he left the activity all together. But forensics slowly pulled him back in from the wilderness and in 2016 he became the ADoF in his hometown's high school and community college teams concurrently. He's since help establish Diablo Valley College as one of the nation's premier community college teams, and launched the forensics judging services company Hired Judge. His company has connected hundreds of judges nationwide with tournaments in their local area, and has big plans for the future of forensics. • In this episode, Robert and Blake discuss the power of community college competitors, the finer points of Reader’s Theater, and the goal of winning forensics as a team. The TableThink Podcast show introduces you to amazing people serving others with their gifts and abilities. TableThink believes in the power of reading. We think that despite all the binge-worthy shows on Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix nothing can compare with a good book to read. So. We invited one of our favorites, Roy Carlisle, to be featured in our TableThink podcast. Roy Carlisle has been the editor for top authors, changing the way the world thinks by fine-tuning words and crafting the story. In this episode of TableThink’s podcast, Roy gives insight to the creative work of writing, explaining key elements of the relationship between author and writer. We asked, “If, you would put some of your authors together at a table—who may not agree with one another—who would they be and why would you invite them?” His list is thought-provoking, giving us reason to pause and think about what would happen at a table filled with these kind of unique and powerful individuals. We loved the question he would ask the authors seated at the table: “What was the book that changed your life?” As Roy says, “Nothing we have invented replaces the book.” Thank you, Roy, for working hard to make sure we have plenty of books to read. There’s no substitute for what the book brings to our world. Roy Carlisle’s bio: Roy is Executive Editor for Books for the Independent Institute, working with Independent’s Research Director, Center Directors, Fellows and Scholars to identify academic authors for potential book publishing projects. He is also liaisons with its print and eBook distributor, Independent Publishers Group in Chicago, and with publishing industry associations, including the Independent Book Publishers Association (where he has served on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors) and the American Association of Publishers. He maintains an active membership in S.H.A.R.P., the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading, and Publishing.
