Congressional Staffers Don't Need Background Checks — Unless You Count the Chinese and Cuban Agents Already Working There

You’re listening to American Ground Radio with Stephen Parr and Louis R. Avallone. This is the full show for July 24, 2026. We open with California's mail-in ballot system — and the 150,000 ballots rejected in the June primary as invalid. Out of 8.5 million ballots returned, nearly 94,000 arrived too late and another 50,000 failed signature verification. We connect it to the Los Angeles mayor's race, where Spencer Pratt held second place in ballots received before Election Day — and then mysteriously dropped to third as post-Election Day ballots arrived and a democratic socialist surged from third to first. We explain why California's system — which mails ballots to every registered voter, accepts them up to seven days after Election Day, and allows signature corrections after the fact — is designed for maximum permissiveness rather than maximum integrity. We also note that the pressure from Trump's DOJ is producing results: states are now publicly acknowledging ballot problems they would have quietly buried before. In our Top 3 Things You Need to Know, President Trump issued new tariffs on 60 countries — including Canada, Mexico, the UK, and EU members — based on a new legal justification targeting forced labor in supply chains, after the Supreme Court struck down his prior tariff authority earlier this year. Then four Somali immigrants in Minnesota pled guilty to defrauding Medicaid out of millions by using AI to fabricate patient notes for medical visits that never happened, billing the government for fictional services through a fake company called Brilliant Minds Services LLC. And the Democratic Party announced its 2028 primary schedule — placing South Carolina first because of its higher proportion of Black voters, a state Democrats haven't won in a presidential election since Jimmy Carter in 1976. We call it what it is: racial politics dressed up as party reform. We also cover the man who disguised himself as a police officer and murdered Minnesota state Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband in a politically motivated attack — sentenced this week to life in prison. We say plainly: political violence cannot be given an inch, regardless of who commits it or who the targets are. What happens in Mexico — where candidates are killed and hung from bridges — cannot be allowed to happen here. We dig deep into a congressional reform proposal with two straightforward components that somehow don't already exist. First, ban members of Congress from having sexual relationships with congressional staffers — including colleagues' staffers, not just their own. Second, require FBI background checks for all House employees within 30 days of starting work, plus a foreign influence disclosure form requiring staffers to reveal any contracts or payments from foreign governments within the past three years. We explain why both of these are urgent: active investigations currently implicate congressional staffers as potential agents of Qatar, China, and Cuba — multiple cases involving China and Cuba alone. Congressional staffers write the bills, negotiate in back rooms, and exercise enormous real power. We should know who they are and who is paying them. Our American Mamas Teri Netterville and Kimberly Burleson revisit the question of how to find couple friends — and arrive at the same beautiful, frustrating conclusion they always do. Couple friendship is seasonal, it's fragile, it's devastated by divorce, and it is almost impossible to manufacture. The best couple friends come through your children's sports, through shared seasons of life, and occasionally through the miraculous coincidence of your children marrying each other's best friends' children. Guys don't have friends — they have wives. And their wives have friends. And those friends have husbands. That's the whole system. We also cover LeBron James signing with the Philadelphia 76ers — and President Trump's answer when asked in the Oval Office whether LeBron or Michael Jordan is the greatest of all time. Trump said he only likes people who like him, and therefore: Michael Jordan, all the way. We agree with the conclusion if not necessarily the methodology. We also discuss John Fetterman's midterm strategy advice for Democrats — delivered in his signature style: don't be weird, don't be communist, don't be weirdo socialist, don't praise Mao, and don't do crazy stuff. We call it the most useful political advice any Democrat has given their party in years, and note that it will almost certainly be ignored. Then it's Fake News Friday — including whether Mamdani admitted he lacks authority to invade Poland, whether the EU makes more fining U.S. tech companies than taxing its own, whether right-wing extremists in the UK were arrested for planning to disrupt Muslim events, whether a Minnesota woman was convicted of saying a slur to a Somali man accused of rape who was never prosecuted, whether Ben Franklin performed electroshock experiments on slaves, whether the Smithsonian put that in a museum exhibit, whether Trump announced a third-term run, whether a New York school district hired a robot teacher, and whether the Obama Presidential Library stiffed its plumber out of nearly $4 million. Sophie Cunningham's shoes sold out in under 24 hours. We couldn't get any for prizes. For our Bright Spot, Paul Jackson was driving on I-5 near Seattle when he spotted an SUV drifting across three lanes with an unconscious driver and a terrified child in the back seat. He pulled alongside the out-of-control vehicle, wedged it against the concrete barrier, brought both cars to a stop, jumped out, put the SUV in park, and stayed with the woman and child until emergency services arrived. Quick thinking, steady hands, and the willingness to act. May your pursuit of happiness bring you joy. Rather than relying on one-time checks, Levy suggests that organizations should evaluate trust continuously across the hiring lifecycle and ask stronger questions of workforce partners. The discussion also looks at what verification can look like in practice – from reference checks and identity validation to evidence-based candidate review and continuous assessment designed to build greater confidence throughout the talent supply chain.

It's Thursday, May 28th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark and Adam McManus Iranian Christian convert gets 10-year prison sentence A judge in Iran recently sentenced a Christian convert to nearly a decade in prison. That's according to the Persian-language Human Rights Activists News Agency. Authorities raided the home of Ghazal Marzban in January. They arrested her and confiscated her Bible. A judge sentenced her to nine years and eight months in prison last week on trumped up charges.  The 41-year-old Christian woman converted to Christianity from Islam nearly 10 years ago. Since then, she has faced arrest, imprisonment, interrogation, and now another imprisonment.  Please pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters in Christ in Iran. The country is ranked 10th on the Open Doors World Watch List of the most oppressive countries to be a Christian.  Hebrews 13:3 says, “Remember the prisoners as if chained with them—those who are mistreated—since you yourselves are in the body also.” Trump's Cabinet meeting on war with Iran U.S. President Donald Trump held a cabinet meeting at the White House yesterday about the Iran war.  The United States and Iran remain in a fragile ceasefire that began last month. President Trump hopes to finish the war through negotiations.  Listen. TRUMP: “Iran is very much intent; they want very much to make a deal. So far, they haven't gotten there. We're not satisfied with it, but we will be. Either that or we'll have to just finish the job. Their navy is gone, as I've said a thousand times. Their navy is gone. Their air force is gone. Everything's gone. And they're negotiating on fumes.” However, the Trump administration is prepared to finish the job with the military if negotiations fail. Listen to comments from War Secretary Pete Hegseth.  HEGSETH: “Whether it is through the efforts of your negotiators, that they ensure they never have a nuclear weapon, or we have to go back to the War Department to finish the job that way, we're prepared to do that.” MAGA Ken Paxton trounced Senator John Cornyn in GOP primary In a rejection of the GOP Establishment in the May 26th Senatorial run-off in Texas, Republican Party voters ousted Senator John Cornyn who has been in the Senate for 23 years, according to World Magazine.   After President Donald Trump endorsed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton during early voting, he trounced Cornyn, 63% to 36%, reported NBC News. CORNYN: “After a public service career lasting more than four decades and 18 consecutive campaign wins, tonight we've come up short in this primary runoff. A few years ago, I had a friend of mine say, ‘You know what makes God laugh?' He said, ‘When we make plans.'” Without referencing Ken Paxton by name, Senator Cornyn vowed to support him in the general election this November. CORNYN: “I've spent most of my time in the Senate, building the Republican Party in Texas, and in the U.S. Senate. I've always supported the Republican ticket, and I intend to do so again in this general election. I've said throughout this race that I trust the voters of Texas. They've made their decision, and I must respect it.” However, Cornyn did throw some shade at the registered Republicans who failed to show up and vote for him. CORNYN: “In this runoff election, approximately 8% of registered voters made their voices heard. Of that 8% who voted, roughly 60% said they were ready for a different direction. Another reminder that those who show up decide for those who do not.” (Watch Senator Cornyn's 7:42-minute concession speech here). Ken Paxton, who has vowed to support the Trump agenda, said this. PAXTON: “Today, change was on the ballot, and change won.” (applause) He expressed his gratitude for President Trump's endorsement. PAXTON: “When everyone in Washington told him to abandon me and abandon the people of Texas, he didn't listen. Instead, he gave his complete and total endorsement. President Trump is the leader of our party, and his endorsement is the most powerful force in politics. And I'm honored to have his support, and I look forward to working with him in the Senate to deliver for Texas.” Despite Cornyn and his allies outspending Paxton 9 to 1, Paxton came out on top in this $163 million primary, making it the most expensive primary in U.S. history. PAXTON: “We went up against $150 million and all the attacks in the world. And you know what happened? The voters declared loud and clear a simple truth that we know in our hearts and in our souls: Texas is not for sale.” (cheers) Paxton pivoted to the general election and spoke about his Democrat opponent, James Talarico, a 37-year-old Texas State Representative. PAXTON: “My opponent is the most extreme radical the Democrats have ever nominated. He's even running a ‘vegan' campaign, whatever that is. (laughter) He goes by a few names that you may all have heard of. Some people know him as ‘Tofu Talarico.' (laughter)  Some people call him ‘Six-Gender Jimmy.' (laughter)  I've even heard some people call him ‘James Tala-freak-o.'  (laughter) “He's a threat to our children. He wants boys in girls' sports, gender mutilation surgery performed on kids. And, when asked what he loved, outside of his family and friends, his first answer was ‘trans kids.' That's weird. That's a radical guy. “He wants the open borders policies of Biden, the woke agenda of AOC. He said, ‘You can't be a Christian if you support the oil and gas industries.'” (Watch Ken Paxton's 9:51-minute victory speech here.) Man who gave Abortion Kill Pill to pregnant woman indicted A Texas jury indicted a man last week in an abortion-related case.  Twenty-five-year-old Jon Rueben Demeter allegedly gave an abortion-inducing drug to a pregnant woman, killing the unborn baby.  It's the first time Texas has criminally charged someone for providing an abortion since banning most abortions in 2022. Connecticut requires background check for homeschool parents Connecticut is expanding its regulation of homeschooling in the state. Democrat Governor Ned Lamont signed Public Act No.26-37 into law on Tuesday. The law requires parents to disclose their intent to homeschool to the state. Also, parents cannot take their children out of public school for homeschooling without undergoing a background check. James Mason, the president of the Home School Legal Defense Association, said, “By requiring every parent to be pre-screened before they can begin homeschooling, it turns parents from trusted actors into potential risks to be managed.” 42% of Christians don't talk about God with other believers And finally, Lifeway Research released analysis of its 2025 State of Discipleship Living Unashamed study. The survey found that 30 percent of Protestant churchgoers agree with the statement that “Many people who know me are not aware I am a Christian.” That's up from 14 percent in 2013. Also, 42 percent of respondents said spiritual matters do not normally come up in daily conversations with other Christians. That's up from 29 percent in 2013. Psalm 71:1 and 15, says, “In you, O LORD, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame! … My mouth will tell of Your righteous acts, of Your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, May 28th, in the year of our Lord 2026. How are cruise ships structurally built to put children at risk? Master keycards granting cabin access to dozens of crew. Youth programs without land-based licensing standards. Background checks limited to foreign government records. No device screening. No international offender registry. The industry engineers an environment where parents lower their guard while simultaneously failing to screen the people who fill that gap. According to Congressional data, one-third of cruise ship assault survivors were minors. Maritime attorneys handling over a thousand cases report a similar ratio involving children. The industry says it has strict policies. Those policies are self-created, self-enforced, and not subject to independent audit. A deported crew member with no charges and no registry entry can board another ship. Parents have no way to verify the screening of the person watching their child. Katie Warnock, Founder & CEO of Staffing Boutique, shares a practical roadmap to help nonprofit leaders hire smarter, faster, and with better long-term results. If your NPO is struggling to fill roles, experiencing candidate drop-off, or losing momentum late in the hiring process, this conversation reveals why—and what to do differently.Katie begins with a foundational truth: hiring success starts before you ever post a job. “It's kind of like a mishmash of responsibilities… and when hiring, that's not a good skill set to be efficient.” Clear role definition, department alignment, and realistic expectations are critical to attracting the right candidates. From there, she walks through how to build a compelling job description, evaluate the psychology of fit, and structure a hiring process that actually moves candidates forward. With hiring cycles now averaging months, nonprofits must eliminate friction—from unclear expectations to inconsistent interview processes. You'll also learn why broad job postings fall short. As Katie puts it, “It's not just putting a general ad on LinkedIn and then… post and pray.” Instead, targeted platforms and sector-specific outreach are key to finding aligned talent. Finally, the episode addresses one of the most overlooked areas: making the offer. From salary transparency to verbal alignment and negotiation timing, Katie outlines how to close candidates without losing them at the finish line. For nonprofit leaders, hiring is not just an HR function—it's a mission-critical business process.
