The locals say when the fog returns, the dead will arise from their watery graves.The Fog, directed by John Carpenter, fits quite nicely into Retro Reel 2025. It stars horror greats such as Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins, and Hal Holbrook and like most Carpenter films, features an electric soundtrack. The film gives off eerie vibes and has multiple character stories that are bridged together quite nicely as the secrets of Antonio Bay are revealed throughout the movie. While the film is not without its flaws, it's fun to watch a mystery, ghost story, and revenge plot all wrapped into one. A child's comic book brings five tales of terror to life.Retro Reel 2025 rolls on with an anthology movie we enjoy watching every time. Creepshow, directed by George A. Romero, features an all-star cast of Hal Holbrook, Leslie Nielsen, Ted Danson, and Adrienne Barbeau among many others in five horror tales that seem to get better and better as the movie continues. The blend of comedy and horror are done so well and the overarching story of the tales coming from a child's comic book is an excellent touch. The stories are clever, fun, and stand out in a genre that features so many anthology films. There's something about small town murder mysteries that are always interesting. Now just add horror and supernatural elements to that and you get Dead & Buried, a movie that doesn't get the appreciation it deserves. It fully captures that creepy small town feel as characters start dropping dead in the strangest circumstances and it seems like the sheriff is the only person trying to uncover the truth behind the murders. The movie features a lot of crazy death scenes and just when it seems like the mystery is solved, there are more twists coming, which makes this film so enjoyable. An adult man dealing with past trauma goes on a killing spree in New York City. Retro Reel is back for the 2nd run on the podcast and we are starting a whole month of 80's horror films with Maniac. This is the 2nd time we watched the movie and while the film is at times a mess, it conveys how a traumatic event in the past causes the main character to experience violent urges. The film is entertaining as it does have some gruesome kills including one that may be one of the best all time horror movie kills due to the effects, however it does feature a lot of nonsense. One thing is for sure, there's a lot of moaning, potential schizophrenia, and dolls. Flying under the radar of some of Craven's other movies, this film stars Bill Pullman as a convincing anthropologist working to uncover strange occurrences in Haiti regarding a drug that is pausing vital signs. This film explores the "stranger in a strange land" concept very well, adding in cultural elements, Voodoo practices, as well as touching on the political strife, all playing a role in the film. The film is loosely based on the Wade Davis book "The Serpent and the Rainbow: A Harvard Scientist's Astonishing Journey into the Secret Societies of Haitian Voodoo, Zombies, and Magic". A schizophrenic serial killer comes back to his hometown to kill the seven kids who were prematurely born on the day he reportedly died. My Soul to Take is a movie that we have long criticized for being a weak slasher in almost every possible way. It's even more unfortunate to know that it was directed by Wes Craven. This film has some interesting concepts that are not only poorly executed, but they also fail to develop into anything meaningful at any point. Upon robbing the home of his landlords, Fool notices there are unusual men being kept under the stairs in the basement floor. He also discovers a young girl named, Alice in the home as he attempts to escape from under the noses of his landlords.The People Under the Stairs is a hidden gem from Wes Craven and a movie that sometimes feels over the top in all the right ways. Everett McGill and Wendy Robie stand out as the landlords who are constantly chasing Fool throughout the movie and continue to raise the meter on how evil they can be. This is also not to mention that they are capturing and keeping people in their basement in a sectioned area under the stairs. This is a nice kickoff to Wes Craven month and a movie that is enjoyable to watch each time it's on. Romero. Romero helped inspire what zombie movies are today and it's clear that the way this film portrayed a macro view of a zombie apocalypse set the stage for how films are utilizing survivor struggles in a post-apocalyptic world today. This was our first time watching the movie and although we had some mixed reviews, we all agreed the film is influential. Following their readings, the group begin to die off one-by-one as fate would have it in accordance with their readings.Tarot is a teen slasher horror movie released in 2024 that feels very similar to the Final Destination films, but with tarot card readings. With a very familiar concept, fate takes the friend group one-by-one as the group continues to make the worst mistakes ignoring the very clear pathway to death as identified in their tarot car readings. The film doesn't feel original, the kills are weak, and although the visuals at times are well done, the buildup to the kills is poorly executed. While it doesn't have an all-star cast, Carpenter creates a fun environment where the characters are fleshed out and work off the killer well, which happens to be a car. While the movie can be ridiculous at times, it's enjoyable, the kills are great, and is entertaining all the way to the end. The film explores the relationship of the supernatural with children and effectively presents a new entry into possession and undead films that hasn't been seen before. It's bloody, it's fun, and at times, hard-to-watch. The leprechaun is now in space and this idea brings more questions than are ever answered in the movie. While this movie brings together the craziest set of characters and storylines, it diminishes the focus on the leprechaun's gold, which leaves the movie unfulfilled. The tension mounts as the band tries to survive and the skinheads plot how they can get away with their murders. Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, and Patrick Stewart star in the film and deliver great performances in a violent movie that continues to build suspense to the end. Jigsaw puts a doctor through a game to keep himself alive as well as allows his apprentice to run a game herself that is somehow connected to Jigsaw's game.Saw III features a very sick Jigsaw who allows his apprentice, Amanda, to start taking over his legacy. The film is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, who directed Saw II and continues on to direct Saw IV. While the film isn't as strong as the first two in the series, it does add value to the series by bringing back returning characters, Eric and Kerry, played by Donnie Wahlberg and Dina Meyer and carves a new path for Jigsaw and Amanda. The movie delivers on clever traps, crazy kills, and fills in more of Jigsaw's background that makes the series more interesting. Aliens set "Plan 9" into motion on planet Earth by bringing the dead back to life and threatening the planet.Plan 9 from Outer Space is the finale of Bad Movie January and the film is as bad as advertised. This was our second watch and it was as bad as remembered. It's so bad, that discussing it was such a challenge. Ed Wood Jr. is widely known as one of the worst directors and after watching this film, the criticism is understood. While Plan 9 is the plan for the aliens to bring the dead back to life, it's never discussed what happened with plans 1-8, but even if they did mention it, we're positive it would make this movie even more nonsensical. In trying to blend these two plots, the film is highly convoluted and dilutes the performance of the star of the film, Stephen Dorff. A man, who was traumatized as a child during Christmas, experiences a mental break after being deceived at his work in a toy factory, goes on a killing spree around Christmas. Christmas Evil is not at all what we were expecting during our first watch. Expecting a horror slasher, this film is a character piece of a man, traumatized by Christmas during his youth, loosing his grip on reality. Brandon Maggart, does a great job portraying a man transforming into his own vision of what Santa should be after discovering Santa isn't real. Kim, a female reporter, investigates the death of an enflamed woman jumping off a building, leading to her involvement in a ritual sacrifice by a coven of witches during Christmas time.Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation is by far the biggest deviation from the Silent Night, Deadly Night series and definitely the weirdest so far. We don't expect much else from Brian Yuzna, but with Clint Howard playing a character named Ricky, where it's completely left open if there's any continuity from the Ricky in the previous movies and the addition of body horror and bugs into known slasher films is a bit of a surprise. Not to mention, Christmas is barely mentioned in this movie that is a listed sequel of Christmas horror films. There is much to call out in this movie, but it is very entertaining. The killer dresses as pilgrim John Carver, which is an original slasher idea. The film is a good mystery that makes all the townspeople suspicious of each other and is enjoyable all the way to the end. When a young boy is kidnapped and locked in a basement, amidst a string of child disappearances, he beings to receive calls from the killer's previous victims from a dead phone. The Black Phone is an ominous movie that takes place in the late 70s and gives the tone that a serial killer is striking. Ethan Hawke plays a deeply disturbed killer known as "The Grabber" who drives around in a black van, kidnapping young boys, and bringing them down into his basement. Hawke is very creepy in his role and it's clear that his character has so much more going on than what is shown on-screen and the film keeps the audience guessing. Each story is linked by a murderous clown and after starting the tape, strange occurrences take place in the house.All Hollows' Eve is the first feature-length film directed by Damien Leone, best known for the Terrifier movies. What's interesting about All Hollows' Eve is that it depicts Art the Clown prior to the Terrifier movies. In this film, he's portrayed as a killer clown among a series of short horror films in a video tape discovered in a bag of Halloween candy. We enjoy horror anthology movies and found two of the three short horror films in this movie to be very entertaining. However, one of the films seemed very out-of-place. In this film, a search and rescue team attempt to look for the whereabouts of any survivors after the events of the previous movie. While the focus is a bit different, the theme of large groups of people heading to the Honey Island Swamp and getting horribly murdered by Victor Crowley remains the same. This series does an amazing job of keeping the content fresh and providing laughs along the way. After a deadly prank and coverup, a group of teenagers in a small Colorado town find themselves to be the prey of a killer of legend.I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer is a movie that draws slight references to the first film and attempts to bring back the fisherman killer with the hook, but is unable to bring the tale back to life. Taking place in a Colorado town, which appears to be far more mountainous that coastal, references the seafaring killer in a way that doesn't make sense with where they are. The accidental death of a friend in a prank sparks the legend and the killings, but does not deliver. Joel, a film critic for a horror magazine, stumbles upon a support group of serial killers and attempts to blend in with the group or become their victim.Vicious Fun is exactly as the title suggests, a heck of a lot of fun. As far as comedy horrors go, it's one of the best in a while and it's a movie that ups the ante at every turn, keeping us on the edge of our seats for the entire duration of the film. The movie has a strong cast with a great appearance from David Koechner and blends humor with bloody kills in a wild ride that horror fans will love. A remote lake in the country for a couple turns violent when they start getting harassed by a group of local kids.Eden Lake stars Kelly Reilly and Michael Fassbender, who both have great performances in a movie that is very bleak and hard to watch. While the movie is very entertaining, it's very frustrating to watch and see local kids terrorize a couple who for the most part are keeping to themselves. It's a film that doesn't get better for the protagonists as it goes on, but has a very engaging story. A vacation to Mexico takes an ugly turn when a group of friends meet up with a tourist and head to a dig site where an evil awaits them.The Ruins is one of the more interesting movies we've seen. This is not the first time we've seen this film and it always ends with us being disappointed by a few needless parts that hurt the film. After watching it again, our thoughts still hold on this movie. It's a fun watch with a good story, but the plot takes some unexpected turns that make us question the writing.
