Keeper. Join Morris and Rick as they discuss the latest offering from Osgood Perkins. Is this dark fairytale a story of happily ever after, or is the creepy icing on the cake really a tale of unhappily never lasting?
Synopsis After nearly a year of dating, lovebirds Liz and Malcom drive to Malcom's family cabin for a little getaway. Liz immediately begins to pick up on some strange vibes, both from the cabin and Malcom. Something is definitely off, but at least there is chocolate cake. As Liz learns more about Malcom, she is bombarded by visions of dead women, creepy ghouls, and severed heads. All of this in the name of love, maybe it would have been better to stay single after all. Review of Keeper Keeper's trailer keeps things pretty ambiguous, and so I had very little knowledge of this film before going in. All I could gather was that this movie was about a woman on a trip with her boyfriend, who is kind of creepy. And honestly, that's what we get from this movie for the entirety of Act 1 and Act 2. Liz is just mildly bothered by her boyfriend acting strangely, but other than that, there isn't much to say about it. The director Osgood Perkins is currently making a name for himself with movies like The Blackcoat's Daughter and Longlegs, but Keeper seems to be something else. While there are mixed reviews for Longlegs (some loving it and others finding it weird and cheesy), what we can all agree on is that Longlegs had some very interesting concepts that make the movie worth checking out. Unfortunately for Keeper, there really just isn't anything all that interesting about it. It's a cabin in the woods story, with a domineering, creepy man, and a seemingly helpless yet feisty female protagonist. It almost doesn't get more cliche than that. I will say that Act Three opens the movie up a little bit more, and the creepy visuals and monster designs were quite scary-looking. But that doesn't make up for the movie being kind of bland most of the time. Even when it ends up doing something kind of good, the story is still borderline nonsensical. Score 3/10
An incredibly random mix of movies this week, but hopefully we have a little something for everyone here at Breakfast All Day. Think of it as a Thanksgiving buffet for your ears: WICKED: FOR GOOD: We do not agree at all on the second half of "Wicked," based on the Broadway musical. But we wanted to review it as early as we could, so here we are, putting one foot in front of the other on the Yellow Brick Road. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande co-star. In theaters Nov. 21. KEEPER (NO Spoilers!): The latest nightmare fuel from Osgood Perkins has been in theaters for a few days, so we wanted to catch up with it. The less you know the better, so this is a spoiler-free review, but we're thinking of doing a spoiler livestream, so we'll keep you posted on that. Tatiana Maslany is awesome in this. JAY KELLY: George Clooney IS George Clooney in this affectionate drama from director and co-writer Noah Baumbach. He plays a legendary Hollywood star who's forced to reconsider his life and legacy. Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Billy Crudup and Riley Keough are among the incredible supporting cast. In select theaters now, streaming on Netflix Dec. 5. Send us a Question!MOVIE DISCUSSION: Kathryn joins Melvin to discuss Osgood Perkins' second movie of 2025, Keeper! Has Perkins created another commercially accessible psychological-horror success, or has he returned to his undeniably divisive slow-burn roots? As much as we like Osgood Perkins, even we were surprised to hear that Nicole Kidman will be starring in his next movie following Keeper. We also talk about the strange Orphan franchise and the pros and cons of the holiday season. Plus, a bigger budget rip off of Skinamarink? It is hard to pin down a good Southern gothic movie. There are plenty of films that have tried their hand at it, but few manage to succeed at getting the tone right. By accident, we came across The Devil All the Time. The names will grab all the attention - Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Bill Skarsgard, Robert Pattinson - but it is the story that is the real standout.Set in the Midwest during the late 1940s to the late 60s, the plot deals with a very specific part of America. It tackles difficult themes in a manner that is both frightening and funny. It skewers religion without being a total takedown while also talking about how important family is and how it can hold you back. Its dark tone is balanced by great pacing that will keep audiences engaged.Welcome to Derry is pretty much the opposite. It is over the top, lacks strong characters, and has nothing serious to say. To be fair, the last point should not be held too much against it. After all, Stephen King himself once asked why can't a story just be a story? The flip side is the HBO prequel really wants to say something meaningful. That being said, it has improved with each episode, with the latest being the best one yet. The problem is that it has the albatross of the first two episodes to overcome. Those were so bad, that unless the show is amazing, it will never break past the ceiling of “meh”. This is kind of a shame, since it makes it more difficult to appreciate its improvements. Still, the stuff that remains bad, is very bad. Osgood Perkins is about to release his second movie of 2025. Daniel and Drew make their Rotten Tomatoes prediction for Keeper.
For November we begin a new mini series, looking at horror movie suitable for winter viewing! In this first episode we have some classic wintry terrors from the 1950s, the 1970s and the 1980s, discover how zombies fare in the snow, look an early movie from Osgood Perkins, and defrost an obscure 1980s monster movie!
An easily frightened hospice nurse arrives at the house of a sick author and while caring for her, she discovers one of her stories may reveal secrets about the house.I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House is Osgood Perkins' second movie and while we enjoyed Longlegs and the style of storytelling Perkins used in that movie, this one didn't land for us. This film, while clearly artsy, came off as a basic ghost story with little-to-no substance for us. While this movie certainly has a fan base, it just wasn't one of our favorites. Oftentimes ghost stories can be unique and very interesting, but unfortunately, it just didn't work for us. Watch the movie and catch our review.YouTube | The Final PodcastDiscord | Spooky PiratesFacebook | The Final PodcastInstagram | thefinalpodcastMusic Credit: Karl Casey @ White Bat AudioWhat should we review next? Toss us a vibe and send over a recommendation!
Is the first week of November the slowest time of the movie year? It is if you are a genre fan. We do have a little bit of news. Osgood Perkins excites us while John Carpenter disappoints us. There is also an important change to your Halloween viewing schedule. Plus, a new horror streaming channel that seems to be catering to fans. Before the first episode premiered, Welcome to Derry had taken us on a wild ride. When we first heard about it, we were incredibly excited. There are so many excellent stories in the sourced material that would make for great television. And who knows what original ideas the writers could come up with? Then we saw the first trailer. We went into the show fearing the worst. Welcome to Derry may not have been as bad as we feared, but it definitely was not very good. From bad CGI to completely ignoring what the source material is about, we talk about our (many) gripes. Even the things that were done right had a ring or wrong around them.Hell House LLC was a straightforward found footage horror movie. It did not do anything revolutionary, but it was a good time. Its sequels have expanded on the lore in ways that were not needed. The latest installment puts on full display how the original movie was never intended to be a series.Hell House LLC: Lineage is not for newcomers. It is not for casual fans. It is not even for people who have seen all of the installments and enjoyed them. This movie is strictly for those who know the series in and out. You need to have an intimate working knowledge of these movies to get anything out of the latest one. But at least the change from first person to traditional narrative was a good idea. Right? On the twenty-seventh night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing GRETEL & HANSEL (2020), from director Osgood Perkins, the film has a screenplay by Rob Hayes based on the Grimm fairy tale. Separated from their desperate mother, teenage Gretel (Sophia Lillis) leads her younger brother Hansel (Samuel Leakey) through a desolate, distant fairytale countryside in a desperate search for food and work. After a long journey, the siblings are lured by the scent of a lavish feast to a strange, black-gabled house in the forest, home to the seemingly kind but unsettling woman (Alice Krige). As Gretel's protective instincts clash with the woman's manipulative attempts to mentor her in burgeoning dark powers, the siblings begin to uncover the chilling and sinister secrets of the seemingly bottomless pantry and their host's true nature. The film clocks in at 1 h and 27 m, is rated PG-13 and we caught it on the Hoopla app but you can find it on Prime Video, Pluto TV, Roku Channel, Tubi and to buy/rent on Prime Video. Kim and Ket Stay Alive... Maybe: A Horror Movie Comedy Podcast
Kim tells Ket the second half of The Monkey. We get to the bottom of Kim's shockingly incorrect account of Theo James' attractiveness. We can call off the 5150 for that. We also appreciate that Osgood Perkins feels we've earned some fun after the Pretty Things That Live Under The Stairs in The Blackcoat's Daughters' Closets of Longlegs. Most importantly, we'll learn if Ket will live or die in The Monkey.Dir. THE SWIMMER (1968) We dive deep in to The Swimmer and discuss and analyze, maybe just a little bit the glorious film directed by Frank Perry, based on a screenplay by Eleanor Perry, from the 12 page short story by John Cheever. "Well-off ad man Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster) is visiting a friend when he notices the abundance of backyard pools that populate their upscale suburb. Ned suddenly decides that he'd like to travel the eight miles back to his own home by simply swimming across every pool in town."If you're reading this I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support. In this episode of Spitball Media Podcast, we dive deep into the unsettling world of Weapons, unpack the first season of FX's sci-fi drama Alien Earth, and compare the directorial styles of Zach Cregger and Osgood Perkins. We also catch up on what we've been watching lately and break down the trailers for some highly anticipated films and documentaries, including AKA Charlie Sheen, Mr. Scorsese, Dreameater, Marty Supreme, Witchboard, and Americana. Whether you're into horror, sci-fi, or cinematic deep cuts, this episode is for you.
SPOILER ALERT!!! AS WITH ALL SPECIAL EDITIONS WE HAVE A LOT TO SAY AND SAY IT ALLHorror movies have ramped up their marketing efforts in recent years. Weapons is the latest example. The movie created a website, released two hour security cam footage, along with traditional tactics like an awesome poster and excellent trailer. The end result? It exceeded box office expectations.Where does Zach Cregger stand among current horror directors? There is a very strong argument that he is the best at mixing horror and humor. And this includes the Winters and Osgood Perkins. Along with being satisfying, the ending of Weapons is one of the funniest of the year. The major twist comes well before the final moments. How much people enjoy the twist will also determine how much they like the film. More so than any other movie in recent memory. It will be the point of return for everyone who watches it. For some, Weapons will not be able to do any wrong; for others it will be a complete turnoff.Non-linear storytelling is very tricky to pull off. Not only can it disorient the audience, but it can open things up to plot holes. We talk about one possible issue with Weapons and another nitpick. We also debate how effectively Weapons told its story.Whatever a person's final opinion on Weapons, there is no denying the amazing performances. There has been a shift the past few years, but horror tends to get ignored around awards season. It may not end up getting nominated for anything, but it would be surprising if some names from Cregger's release are not thrown around. One character will definitely be an inspiration for Halloween. What does the success of another original movie IP mean for horror movies in the future? Obviously, franchises and Stephen King adaptations are not going to end; they are the lifeblood of the genre. But will studios be willing to take more risks on new properties?
