Based on Stephen King's short story of the same name the films stars Theo James in a dual role as twin brothers who are tormented by a cursed toy monkey. We talk news and Osgood Perkins' The Monkey (recorded in April)
Linnéa från @lennyslibrary återvänder äntligen till podden, den här gången för att reda ut vad grejen egentligen är med Osgood Perkins urspårade tolkning av The Monkey!
There she is the almost birthday angel. This week we watched Osgood Perkins 2024 film Longlegs. Join us as we help celebrate Leigh Harker's birthday in style with a super creepy performance from Nic Cage. Did we love it? Does Leigh Harker have a good birthday? Did it scare Cyndi to death? Join us this week our last before a month long hiatus to find out.
We have had many discussions about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre on our humble little podcast. In recent months, we have also talked a lot about Osgood Perkins. We never thought the two of them would come together. The rumor is that may be happening. The question becomes, is that a good thing? We are big enough to admit when we are wrong. Last week, we correctly predicted that the new Final Destinations movie would be number one a the box office. In doing so, we were very dismissive of the franchise. We referred to it as second rate and its box office success would be due to there being little competition. As it turns out, Bloodlines is not only the most successful installment in the series; it is the top grossing horror movie of the year. That being said, we have still have yet to hear anyone say it is their favorite horror franchise.Bad neighbors suck. Yes, there are some things that you learn to put up with it and being to not even care all that much about. But when you have those neighbors that seem to have a complete disregard for you, it can make coming home hell. And if you happen to be the one causing the problems, dealing with police, the people you upset, and retaliation can also be a pill.Restless is a British psychological thriller that sees a woman unravel due to one such neighbor. A mix of great sound design, surprising moments of humor, and great storytelling will catch audiences off guard. It is a basic and relatable story that makes for an enjoyable watch. The Surrender may not be as relatable, but it also boasts strong performances and writing. The tale is one as old as horror. A family conducts a ritual to bring a recently deceased love one back to life. Naturally, it is not as simple as it sounds. And even though the plot may be familiar, it is also not as simple as it sounds. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. We tackle the film Gretel & Hansel! Released in 2020 and directed by Osgood Perkins! Gretel & Hansel is based on the Grimm's Fairy Tale, Hansel and Gretel! This one stars Sophia Lillis of IT and Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves fame and Alice Krige the Borg Queen from Star Trek: First Contact!Plot: In a distant land, two siblings, Hansel and Gretel, wander through the woods in search of food and work. When a mysterious lady offers them a way out, they accept without thinking about the consequences.Taglines: A grim fairy tale. Follow the crumbs.Music by Kevin Macleod.
A few months back we had a chance to see Clown in a Cornfield. On last week's show we reminded everyone that it was coming to theaters. Its box office performance was still surprising to us. We also talk about how well the new Final Destination movie will probably do- even though it probably shouldn't.We have had a great time with the last two releases from Osgood Perkins. His next film looks like it is going to be awesome. Just check out the hour long promo that was recently revealed. Something frightening is definitely going on there. Plus, what is happening to all the live service horror games?Haunted house stories have long been a part of horror. One of the most popular takes on the sub-genre is whether the haunting is real or a trick. It is probably most well known from Scooby-Doo, but it goes back much further. The Ruse may be a little too on the nose with its title, but it does do some things right. The problem is, with this type of story, you pretty much have to do everything right. Even the smallest mistake can be immersion breaking and ruin the whole thing. And there is a lot of that here. Some of it is so bad it actually becomes funny. Unfortunately, most of it is just plain bad.A Breed Apart is a weird movie. The premise is cut and dry. A group of influencers go to a private island and end up in a battle for survival against a pack of wild dogs. But everything around it is just odd. It is not the fact that the movie never explains exactly what is going on. And it is not because it does not truly find itself until the final ten minutes. It is not even because of the really strange dialogue. What makes it so interesting is the fact that the majority of it may have been done through AI. How can you tell the difference between CGI and AI? How did it impact A Breed Apart? Was the script done with AI? We try to answer these questions and more in our latest show. This week's Empire Podcast (episode 664 if you're keeping score!) is more packed with goodness than your average Easter egg. Not only do Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, and Alex Godfrey get into a discussion about what exactly makes a musical a musical (along with an impromptu visit to a certain mountain), but they tackle the week's movie news, including the revelation that the Oscars will finally have a Best Stunt Design category (note: this was recorded, due to the Easter holidays, before the new Fantastic Four trailer and Star Wars movie news. We'll get to those next week), and review Ryan Coogler's Sinners, Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza's Warfare, and the new Steve Coogan film, The Penguin Lessons. And if that weren't enough, our guest egg overcracketh, as Chris sits down with Steve Coogan and co-star Jonathan Pryce, [21:13 - 33:16 approx] and Sinners' genius composer, Ludwig Göransson, [1:31:25 - 1:45:01 approx] while Alex has an engrossing chat with Warfare's directors, Ray Mendoza and the other Alex G. [52:19 - 1:07:55 approx] And finally, there's an excerpt from Chris' wonderful spoiler special chat with The Monkey director, Osgood Perkins. [1:46:16 - 1:57:31 approx] Our full spoiler special for that movie is now up in our spoiler special feed. Phew, told you it was a packed show. Enjoy!

This time around Busey plays Archie - a VR software developer guy who hates dogs and is mean... or something. He swerves to miss running over a dog (which if he hates dogs why would he care?) and in the process rolls his car over and goes to heaven where he proceeds to get in a fight win an angel and gets sent back to Earth as a dog. Hi everyone! I hope you're all having a wonderful Spring. I'm so excited for you to listen to today's episode! If you're a fan of Schitt's Creek, then you know Sarah Levy from playing Twyla in the show-- she also happens to be the daughter of Eugene Levy and the sister of Dan Levy. I had such a fun time hearing the inside scoop on that show, which is one of my favorites of all time, as well as what it was like to grow up in such a funny family. Sarah is currently starring as Aunt Ida in a new horror movie called The Monkey, which is adapted from a Stephen King short story and directed by Osgood Perkins. We talk about how much fun she had doing horror (if you haven't seen the movie yet, it sounds TERRIFYING). Sarah lost her home in the Palisades fire, so the conversation starts in a vulnerable place— but I'm so glad it did, because we get to go deep pretty fast, and I feel like I made a new friend! Be sure to stick around for the hindsight, where my producer Jeph and I talk about the episode and respond to listener fact checks from the Mail Sack! Stephen King's THE SKELETON CREW from 1985 was a highly regarded collection of short stories and one novella that he collected together as a major release. The book has had a few of the stories made into film. One of them, THE MONKEY (2025), was just released to theaters only a week or two ago as this is written. After THE MIST, it is possibly the most famous of the tales in the book as the original hardcover had a picture of the drumming monkey toy that the story and movie is about. From IMDB: When twin brothers Bill and Hal find their father's old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths start. The siblings decide to throw the toy away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years. The film is directed and written by the highly prolific Osgood Perkins. The film stars Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, and Colin O'Brien. Receiving positive reviews, the movie has gone on to make back its $10M USD budget and more. Your cohosts take a look at the movie and give their thoughts.

This week on Ripe Reviews we're winding up The Monkey (2025)! We break down Osgood Perkins' newest horror film that has the horror community in divided opinion. Known for his signature atmospheric tension and psychological thrills, Perkins tackles a classic short story from Stephen King's Skeleton Crew collection. Was this supposed to be a horror-comedy, or comedy-horror? And is The Monkey really the best Stephen King adaptation in the past decade? Let the good times roll and let the Dumpster Boys break it down for you.

One of the greatest treats of Collider Ladies Night is getting to welcome a longtime favorite to show. That happened this time around with Tatiana Maslany, who currently has The Monkey playing in theaters nationwide. One of my earliest experiences doing week-to-week series coverage was Orphan Black. Not only did I absolutely adore the show and frequently marvel at Maslany's work in it, but given my investment, it heavily defined some of the earlier years of my career, paving the way to consistent work, work that I was excited to do and quite proud of. While I have crossed paths with Maslany a number of times since for short-form conversations, I was itching to get the opportunity to sit down for a longer chat, and now, thanks to a downright wild Stephen King adaptation from Osgood Perkins, that time has finally come.Maslany plays Lois in The Monkey, mother to twins Hal and Bill, both played brilliantly by Christian Convery. Lois' husband (Adam Scott) thought a drum-playing monkey would be a great gift to bring home to his boys - until he discovers its tendency to kill victims in especially outrageous and horrific ways. He disappears, leaving Lois a single mother. The trio forge forward well enough until Hal and Bill unearth their father's monkey. With The Monkey currently in theaters, Maslany joined me for a Ladies Night chat to discuss her experience working with Perkins on not one, but two feature films - The Monkey and also Keeper, which was filmed before The Monkey and is due in theaters via Neon later this year. She also took the time to highlight another exciting upcoming project, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, looked back on her experience joining the MCU via She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and discussed what it was like winning a breakout performance award for Grown Up Movie Star as well as an Emmy for Orphan Black. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 28, 2025 is: cryptic KRIP-tik adjective Something described as cryptic has or seems to have a hidden meaning, or is difficult to understand. // The singer posted a cryptic message on her social media accounts, and fans raced to decipher it. See the entry > Examples: "When Neon first met with 'Longlegs' writer-director Osgood Perkins, [chief marketing officer, Christian] Parkes' team pitched a cryptic viral ad campaign that put viewers in the perspective of Maika Monroe's detective. ... 'We give the audience these clues that they can piece together to unlock the mystery of the film,' Parkes explains." — Tim Grierson, The Los Angeles Times, 2 Jan. 2025 Did you know? The history of cryptic starts with krýptein, a Greek word meaning "to hide or conceal." Can you uncover other krýptein relatives in English? Not surprisingly, crypt, meaning "underground chamber," is one, as is the name of the element krypton. Krýptein also gave us several words having to do with secret codes, such as cryptogram ("a communication in cipher or code") and cryptography ("the coding and decoding of secret messages"). And cryptocurrency is currency that exists digitally and that relies on computer encryption (secret code) to prevent counterfeiting and fraud.

This week, everyone is back in the War Room for the same format. If it ain’t broke… I guess! First, Da7e saw Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey and was not expecting it to be what is was, so he’s going to try and explain it. Then, Da7e has questions for his co-workers about boycotts that is […]
Director Osgood Perkins is most famous for the recent genre smash, Longlegs, and he brings his unique point of view to The Monkey, which is out in theaters now from Neon and James Wan's Atomic Monster. Make sure to check out the movie and read Kingcast co-host Anthony Breznican's wonderful Vanity Fair profile on Osgood Perkins.
Are you scared of toy monkeys? Should you be? Listen/watch our review of The Monkey (2025) to find out. Synopsis When twin brothers Bill and Hal discover a treasure trove of souvenirs in their absentee father's closet, they find a toy drumming monkey. Soon they discover that whenever they turn it's key, a horrific death occurs in their vicinity. After inadvertently killing a loved one, they decide to hide the monkey down a well to protect others. Two decades later Hal discovers that the monkey is killing again, and he must track down the Monkey and stop it with his teen son. Review This film is Osgood Perkins followup to Longlegs and is an adaptation of a Stephen King short story. I didn't know what to think going into it. The trailer had a a strong sense of dark humor, but since Perkins' other films didn't rely on humor as much, I wasn't sure if he could deliver. But deliver he did. This fast paced death fest is fueled by a great script full of dry dialogue as a counterpoint to the absurdity of the plot. It's like a cross between Final Destination movies and Dragnet. Theo James does the heavy lifting as the hapless Hal being tortured by not only The Monkey, but also by almost everyone he meets. His resigned everyman is the perfect straight man for the insanity happening around him. The insanity takes the form of crazy, over the top deaths that are served in a steady drip line throughout the movie. It's got decapitations, explosions, trampling, and more. Score 9/10
"Everybody dies. Some of us peacefully and in our sleep, and some of us... horribly. And that's life."
In the new horror-comedy The Monkey, Theo James plays a pair of identical twin brothers who get saddled with a cursed wind-up toy monkey that causes people around them to die freakish, gory deaths. It's based on a Stephen King short story, and directed by Osgood Perkins, who made last year's Longlegs.Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopculture Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

James Wan is famous for Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring, and Aquaman, but he's also produced a few Stephen King adaptations, including The Monkey, which is being released February 21st. We talk a lot about working with Osgood Perkins, how perfectly horror and comedy can work together if crafted correctly, his version of The Tommyknockers which never made it off the ground, and his love of Stephen King's It.
